Google AI Mode ads India: what the 28 October announcement says

Google announced on 28 October 2026 that ads in AI Mode, its conversational search experience, are now scaling beyond the United States to ten new markets, India among them. The post came from Shashi Thakur, Google's VP and GM for Search Ads, on the official Google Ads and Commerce blog, the day Alphabet reported quarterly results.

The message to advertisers was short. Ads that already run on Google Search can appear inside AI Mode responses when they match what the person is asking, and they carry a "Sponsored" label. Google also shared two claims from its own US data: AI Mode queries are on average about three times longer than traditional searches, and click-through rates for sponsored and organic product listings inside AI Mode were already similar during a test window from 20 August to 3 September 2026. Those are Google's US numbers, a direction rather than a promise for Indian accounts.

The ten markets in this wave are Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google says Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom come next, with more locales planned in Q4 2026. The United States remains the market where everything lands first.

Why Indian advertisers are not starting from a blank page

India has seen the first half of this film before; the story really begins in 2025. At Google Marketing Live India in July 2025, Google said ads would come to AI Overviews and AI Mode in India later that year, in English, on mobile and desktop. By early August 2025, trade outlets were reporting that the programme had gone live here. So the 2026 news is an expansion and a scaling-up, not a first-ever launch.

What has grown since then is the audience. AI Mode arrived in India in mid-2025 in English, and Hindi followed later that year. On 8 October 2025 Google added seven more Indian languages: Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. More conversational searches mean more chances for a relevant ad to surface.

Think of the rollout as a shop that has stood on a side lane for a year and suddenly finds the lane widened into a main road. The shop is the same. The footfall, and the kind of person walking past, is not. If the Google AI Mode ads India expansion reaches your account, the question is whether the account is ready. If it was set up years ago on tight exact match keywords and never touched since, open it again.

How a sponsored result sits inside an AI Mode answer

An ad in AI Mode appears within or near the AI-written response, marked with a "Sponsored" label so the user can tell it apart from the answer itself. Google Search users who ask a long question, such as "which inverter battery suits a two-bedroom flat in Pune with four-hour power cuts", get a summary first. If an advertiser's text ad or Shopping ad is relevant to that need, it can sit alongside.

A person typing "inverter battery" is browsing. A person describing their flat, city and outage pattern has shown commercial intent with context attached. Google's Gemini models read that context, and the ad system tries to match an offer to the need instead of to a single word.

What are multiturn ads, and do they reach India?

Multiturn ads are ads that can appear in follow-up questions, the second or third turn of the same conversation. Google is launching them in the United States only. Google has not given a date for multiturn ads outside the US, so Indian advertisers should not plan around them yet.

The Sponsored label is the honest line on the page. Users know it is an ad, so plain, specific copy beats loud copy.

Which Google Ads campaigns serve in AI Mode, and do you need a new one?

According to Google Ads Help, the Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns you already run can show up in AI Mode and AI Overviews on their own whenever they are relevant. That answers the most common worry first: you do not need a new campaign, a new budget or a new sign-up. Text ads and Shopping ads are the formats that appear today, and Google says it is testing local inventory ads and vehicle ads.

For a retailer, the Shopping route runs through Google Merchant Center. Your product feed is the raw material: titles, prices, stock status and images. A feed with vague titles like "Item 4471" gives the system nothing to match against a long, detailed question, while "Steel pressure cooker 5 litre induction base" gives it plenty. Cleaning a feed is the dusting behind the cupboard: dull, but often where Shopping results improve.

Performance Max vs Search for AI Mode ads

Neither option wins outright. Performance Max hands most decisions to Google across many surfaces, which suits stores with good feeds and conversion data. Search with AI Max or broad match keeps more control over text, keywords and landing pages, which suits service firms and tight budgets. Many small accounts run both, each with a clear job.

Match types decide who gets in: AI Max, broad match and exact match

Match type is the key that decides which door your ad can open in AI Mode. Google Ads Help says AI-powered targeting, meaning AI Max for Search, broad match on Search, Shopping and Performance Max, is eligible for both contextual matching and direct query matching. Exact match and phrase match keywords get in only when the query is plainly about buying.

Exact match keywords not eligible AI Mode exploratory questions

Advertisers searching "exact match keywords not eligible ai mode" are reading the rule correctly, with one nuance. Exact and phrase match can still serve when someone asks a direct buying question, such as "buy 1.5 ton split AC Bhopal". They are not eligible for contextual matching on broader, exploratory questions, like "how do I keep my top-floor flat cool in May".

AI Max for Search campaigns India setup

Setup happens at campaign level inside an existing Search campaign; AI Max is not a new campaign type. Before switching it on, check three things: conversion tracking that records real leads or sales, Smart Bidding with enough data to learn, and a clean list of negative keywords. AI Max can also adjust headlines and choose landing pages from your site, so pages it might pick should be accurate and current. Test it on one campaign first.

Can advertisers opt out of AI Mode ads? Not separately

No, there is no separate off switch. Google Ads Help is direct: you cannot target ads only to AI Overviews or AI Mode, and you cannot opt out of those placements on their own while staying on Search. They come as part of the same Search inventory.

What you do have are the two old tools that work like a fence and a gate. Negative keywords keep your ads away from queries you never want, such as "free", "job", "second hand" or "repair course" for a shop that sells new appliances. Brand exclusions, available with broad match, AI Max and Performance Max, stop ads from serving on searches about brands you do not stock or do not want to be linked with.

Take an imaginary Jaipur coaching institute that pays for "IIT JEE coaching" clicks. In AI Mode, a long question like "is self-study enough for JEE or should I join coaching" may match its broad match keywords. Fine. "JEE coaching teacher vacancy" is not. One negative keyword for "vacancy" and "job" saves money on both regular search and conversational search, because the same fence covers both fields.

Review negatives monthly, not once a year.

How to track AI Mode ad clicks in Google Ads reports

Look inside your normal campaign reports, because Google does not give AI Mode its own column. AI Mode and AI Overviews traffic is folded into the totals you already see: impressions, clicks, conversions and cost all sit inside your standard Search, Shopping and Performance Max figures. The queries that triggered them also appear, in aggregate, in the search terms report.

That is a little like a restaurant bill that tells you the total but not which dish each diner ordered. You can still learn plenty. Open the search terms report every week and sort by length. Queries of eight, ten or fifteen words, written like sentences, are a strong hint of conversational search activity. If they burn budget without leads, add negatives or tighten match types.

Pair the report with your own analytics. Strong conversion tracking matters more than ever here, since Smart Bidding learns from it and you cannot split AI Mode out by hand. Check that forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks are recorded as conversions. Broken tracking leaves you guessing.

If your team needs help reading these reports alongside organic data, an SEO and search marketing review can show where paid and unpaid traffic overlap.

English only for now: what it means for Hindi and regional advertisers

Ads inside AI Mode and AI Overviews in India serve in English, according to Google Ads Help. The common search "google ads ai overviews ads english only india" has a one-word reply for now: yes. Pakistan gets text ads only. The same help page lists the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Indonesia for AI Overviews only, and notes the list may grow.

There is a second, wider layer. Ads shown above or below AI Overviews, rather than inside them, can appear in every country and language where AI Overviews are available. So a Hindi search may still show your ad in the familiar slots, just not within the AI-written block.

For Indian businesses, the picture therefore splits in two. AI Mode itself speaks Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and more, yet the ads woven into its answers are English only today. If your customers mostly search in Hindi or a regional language, do not rebuild your account for AI Mode yet. Keep your regional-language text ads strong for the standard results, and run English ads where your audience genuinely uses English. Recheck the help page each quarter.

Cost per click and first-month risks for small budgets

AI Mode ads use the same ad auction and the same CPC or conversion-based bidding as standard Search ads, and Google says there is no extra charge to take part. For anyone researching AI Mode ads cost per click small business figures, no official rate card exists. Any CPC you see online for these placements is somebody's estimate.

What the Google AI Mode ads India expansion could change is the mix. Broader matching lets your ad enter more auctions, and more auctions can mean more spend, even if the price per click stays steady. Imagine a Lucknow plumber with a ₹500-a-day budget finding that money gone by lunch if broad match suddenly qualifies for long "how to fix a leaking geyser" questions that bring readers, not customers.

Watch four risks in the first month:

  • Spend creeping up on new, long queries that do not convert
  • Clicks from information seekers rather than buyers
  • AI Max picking a landing page you forgot was out of date
  • Conversion tracking gaps hiding which clicks actually paid off

Check spend every two or three days, and judge results on cost per lead, not click-through rate alone. A cheap click that never calls back is the costliest one in the account.

How to show ads in Google AI Mode: a checklist for Indian shops and service firms

Getting in comes down to eligible campaigns, the right match types and pages that answer real questions. The harder part is getting in for the right searches. Here is a practical order for a small business owner in India:

  1. List every active campaign and note whether it is Search, Shopping or Performance Max, and which match types it uses.
  2. Confirm conversion tracking for calls, forms and WhatsApp with a real test lead.
  3. Update your Google Business Profile hours, phone number and service area, so local signals match your ads.
  4. Clean the Merchant Center feed: clear titles, correct prices in ₹, live stock status.
  5. Add negative keywords for jobs, free, training and other junk intent.
  6. Test broad match or AI Max on one campaign for four to six weeks before rolling it out widely.
  7. Rewrite key landing pages to answer the longer questions people ask, with prices, timings, delivery areas and a short FAQ.
  8. Review the search terms report weekly and write down patterns.

Landing pages deserve the most time. Someone who asked a ten-word question expects a page that finishes the conversation, not a homepage banner. If your site cannot answer clearly, a website rebuild focused on service pages may help more than any bid change. Should you wait or start now? Start small and let your own numbers decide. Frequently asked questions

Are Google AI Mode ads live in India?

Yes. Google confirmed on 28 October 2026 that ads in AI Mode are scaling in India, and English-language ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode were reported live in India from August 2025. Eligible campaigns may already be serving there, depending on query relevance and the ad auction.

Do I pay extra to appear in AI Mode?

No. Google Ads Help says there is no extra charge to participate. Ads in AI Mode use the same auction and the same CPC or conversion-based bidding as standard Search ads, so you pay for clicks or conversions the way you already do on regular Google Search.

Is it possible to target only AI Mode?

No. Google does not let advertisers target ads only to AI Mode or AI Overviews, and there is no setting to pick that placement alone. Your Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaigns become eligible automatically, and the system decides when an ad is relevant to the question being asked.

Do these ads show on both mobile and desktop?

Yes, according to Google's India announcements and trade reports from July and August 2025, which said ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode would appear on both mobile and desktop. Placement still depends on the query and relevance.

What language do AI Mode ads use in India?

English. Google Ads Help lists India among the countries where ads inside AI Mode and AI Overviews serve in English. AI Mode itself supports Hindi and several Indian languages, but ads placed within those answers are English only for now. Standard ad slots above or below AI Overviews follow wider language rules.

Can Performance Max campaigns appear in AI Mode?

Yes. Performance Max is one of the three campaign types Google names as eligible, along with Search and Shopping. Because it uses AI-powered targeting, it can match both direct buying queries and broader, exploratory questions, provided your feed, assets and conversion goals give the system enough to work with.

Will AI Mode ads reduce my organic traffic?

Nobody can say for certain, and Google has not published India-specific figures. AI answers can satisfy some questions without a click, which may affect organic visits for certain pages. Track your Search Console clicks and paid traffic side by side over a few months before drawing conclusions.

Which markets follow India in this rollout?

Google says Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom are next, with more locales planned during Q4 2026. It has not given exact launch dates for each. India's wave also includes Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore.

How will users know an AI Mode result is an ad?

Ads in AI Mode carry a "Sponsored" label, which Google says makes them clearly distinct from the AI-written answer. Write ad copy with that in mind, using specific, accurate claims about price, location and service rather than vague promises.

Where is AI Mode performance data in my Google Ads account?

It sits inside your standard campaign reports. Google includes AI Mode and AI Overviews impressions, clicks, conversions and cost in aggregate with other Search results, without a separate column. The triggering queries appear, also in aggregate, in the search terms report, which is the best place to spot longer conversational searches.
