Our verdict
Start with the free Yoast SEO plugin, which covers sitemaps, schema and meta tags properly on any WordPress site. Pay for Premium at $118.80 a year once you publish often enough to need redirects, linking suggestions and support, and choose WooCommerce SEO for a real shop. If you manage many sites on a budget, Rank Math is cheaper.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Yoast SEO?
Version 28.7 of Yoast SEO shipped on 13 October 2026, and WordPress.org still counts more than 10 million active installs, so for most WordPress owners it is the first SEO plugin they ever install. It requires WordPress 6.9+ and PHP 7.4+. The real decision is whether to stay on the free plugin or pay for Premium. This yoast seo free vs premium comparison uses the official pricing pages and the WordPress.org listing to show what each tier does, what it costs from India, and how it holds up against Rank Math.
Yoast BV was founded in 2010 by Joost de Valk and is based in Wijchen in the Netherlands. Newfold Digital bought it in 2021, and its brands page now places Yoast in the Bluehost Group next to Bluehost, HostGator and YITH, which is why Bluehost plans ship with Yoast already included.
What the free plugin handles on its own
The free download is not a trial. It writes your title tags and meta description fields, outputs canonical URLs, and builds an XML sitemap at /sitemap_index.xml that updates whenever you publish. Post types set to noindex are left out of that sitemap automatically. It also adds schema markup in a single connected graph, so Google reads your organisation, website, article and author as linked entities instead of scattered snippets.
Breadcrumbs are included, though your theme needs a shortcode, a block or a small PHP snippet to show them. You also get FAQ and HowTo blocks for the block editor, a bulk editor for titles and descriptions, crawl settings, Google search previews for desktop and mobile, a front-end SEO inspector, an inclusive language check and llms.txt management. Integrations with Semrush, Wincher, Elementor and Google Site Kit are part of the free build too.
Cornerstone content works in the free version: you flag your most important posts and the analysis holds them to stricter standards. What the free plugin will not do is tell you which posts should link to those cornerstone pages.
Yoast SEO free vs premium comparison, row by row
The table below summarises the WordPress.org feature list and the product pages on yoast.com. WooCommerce SEO includes everything in Premium.
| Feature | Free | Premium | WooCommerce SEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO and readability checks | Yes | Yes, plus word forms and synonyms | Yes, plus product checks |
| Focus keyphrases per post | 1 | Up to 5 | Up to 5 |
| XML sitemap and schema | Yes | Many more schema types | Product schema and shop sitemap |
| Redirect manager | No | Yes | Yes |
| Internal linking suggestions | No | Yes | Yes |
| AI titles and descriptions | No | Yes | Yes, for products too |
| Local, News and Video SEO | No | Included | Included |
| Support | WordPress.org forum | 24/7 chat and email | 24/7 chat and email |
Two rows matter most in daily use. The redirect manager saves you from 404s when you change a slug or delete a post, since Premium asks where the old URL should point. Internal linking suggestions list related posts in a sidebar while you write, which is how most bloggers finally link old articles together. Premium also adds an AI crawler blocker (GPTBot, CCBot and Google-Extended), IndexNow pings, Facebook and X previews, and SEO workouts that walk you through orphaned and cornerstone posts.
Yoast SEO Premium price and the plans above it
Yoast lists three paid WordPress plans, all billed yearly in USD and shown excluding VAT:
- Yoast SEO Premium: $118.80 a year for one site. It now bundles the Local SEO, News SEO and Video SEO plugins that used to cost extra, plus one seat of the Google Docs add-on and Yoast SEO Academy access.
- Yoast WooCommerce SEO: $178.80 a year. Everything in Premium plus shop features.
- Yoast SEO AI+: $358.80 a year. Everything in WooCommerce SEO plus AI Brand Insights, which checks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity describe your brand once a week.
These prices date from July 2025, when Yoast folded its add-ons into fewer plans. Premium went up from $99, but anyone who was buying Local or Video SEO separately now pays less. One subscription covers one domain, so more sites mean more subscriptions. Yoast mentions bulk discounts below 100 sites and custom agency licensing above that, but publishes no percentages. Extra Google Docs seats cost $5 a month each. There is no monthly plan for the plugins, and no INR pricing, so an Indian card pays in dollars plus any bank forex markup and tax added at checkout.
The refund policy gives a full refund within 30 days of the first purchase. Renewals are not refundable, so turn off auto-renew in MyYoast if you only want one year. AI+ is stricter: its product page allows one week, and the refund lapses once more than one AI analysis has run.
When Yoast WooCommerce SEO earns its higher fee
For a shop, yoast woocommerce seo adds product structured data with price, reviews and stock status, a WooCommerce sitemap that focuses on your valuable products and categories, canonical handling for product variations, and content checks that flag missing GTIN or SKU values, short descriptions and image alt text. It also writes AI titles and descriptions for product and category pages. Large catalogues with filtered category pages gain most; a ten-product shop can manage on Premium.
How the Yoast SEO readability analysis score is worked out
Every post gets two traffic lights in the editor: one for SEO, one for readability. The readability analysis runs individual checks on transition words, sentence length, passive voice, paragraph length, subheading spread and runs of sentences that begin with the same word. When most checks are green, the score turns green. Yoast's own linguists describe each check as a guideline, and the thresholds change by language. Yoast says the complete readability analysis is available in 15 languages, so check its language list before trusting the score on Hindi or other Indian-language posts.
Treat the colour as a nudge, not a ranking factor. Google does not read Yoast's scores. A technical tutorial full of code may stay orange forever and still rank.
Setting a focus keyphrase that the analysis can use
Open a post, find the Yoast panel in the sidebar or below the editor, and type the phrase you want the page to rank for in the focus keyphrase field. The SEO checks then look for it in your title, slug, introduction, subheadings and meta description, and warn if you have already used it on another post. Free users get one phrase per post. Premium allows five and recognises word forms, so "run", "running" and "ran" all count.
Yoast SEO setup wizard steps for a fresh install
After activation, a welcome screen offers "Start first-time configuration". If you skip it, find it later under Yoast SEO, General, First-time configuration. The wizard has four parts:
- SEO data optimisation: Yoast indexes your existing content. A large site can take several minutes here.
- Site representation: choose organisation or person, add a name and logo. This feeds the schema graph and can help with a Google knowledge panel.
- Social profiles: add your company or personal profile links.
- Personal preferences: decide whether Yoast may collect usage data. It is optional.
After the wizard, open Settings and check which post types and taxonomies appear in search results. Tags and author archives on a single-author blog are usually better set to noindex. Then submit /sitemap_index.xml in Google Search Console.
That sitemap_index.xml 404 and how Yoast says to fix it
New sites often report that the sitemap returns a 404. Yoast's help page lists the fixes in order: go to Settings, Permalinks and click Save without changing anything, which rebuilds rewrite rules; make sure each sitemap has published content behind it (an empty category sitemap errors out); on NGINX or unusual Apache setups, check the rewrite rules against Yoast's server guides or ask your host; and finally confirm XML sitemaps are switched on in Yoast. Yoast blames badly coded themes and other plugins more often than its own code.
Yoast SEO vs Rank Math on price and free features
Rank Math is the plugin most people compare against, and its free version gives away more. Its WordPress.org page lists a redirect manager, a 404 monitor, five focus keywords per post and 16+ schema types without paying. Rank Math sells in euros, and its regular PRO price is €8.99 a month billed yearly (€107.88 a year before tax). That covers unlimited personal sites, against Yoast's per-site licence, though client sites need the Business plan at €27.99 a month. Rank Math also offers a 30-day refund on new purchases.
Yoast's case rests on other things: 10+ million installs against Rank Math's 4+ million, a cautious release style that tends to break fewer sites, 24/7 human support on paid plans, and an analysis that many content teams already know. If you run five blogs on a tight budget, Rank Math's free tier and multi-site PRO plan are hard to beat. If you run one business site and want the plugin your developer, host and freelance writers already recognise, Yoast is the safer default. AIOSEO and SEOPress are the other names worth a look.
Does Yoast help a page rank?
Indirectly. Yoast handles technical basics such as clean sitemaps, canonical tags, schema and noindex rules, and it reminds you to write titles and descriptions. It cannot replace useful content, links from other sites or a fast host. A green light on every post guarantees nothing.
AI features and the terms that come with them
All AI tools sit behind Premium: AI Generate for titles and meta descriptions, AI Optimize for content fixes, AI Summarize and a content planner. You choose from the generated suggestions rather than having them applied automatically. Yoast's terms say it does not own AI output, that similar output may be produced for other customers, and that it may use inputs and outputs to improve its products, so keep confidential drafts out of the AI panel. The plugin is GPL licensed, which means a paid licence covers updates and support, not the right to use the code. For privacy, yoast.com links to the Newfold Digital privacy notice, which covers all Newfold subsidiaries.
Sites that can skip Premium for now
A personal blog, a portfolio or a small brochure site with fewer than 50 pages rarely needs Premium. The free plugin handles the technical side, and you can manage redirects with a free redirection plugin. Premium starts to pay for itself when you publish weekly, change URLs often, or have a writer team that needs linking suggestions and support. Shops with large catalogues should go straight to WooCommerce SEO. As a first step, run the wizard on the free version, fix what the sitemap and Search Console show, and buy Premium only when you notice yourself repeating the same manual work.

Yoast SEO FAQ
What is the Yoast SEO plugin?
Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin from Yoast BV, a Dutch company founded in 2010 and now owned by Newfold Digital. It handles titles, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, schema markup, canonical URLs and breadcrumbs, and grades each post for SEO and readability. WordPress.org lists more than 10 million active installs.
How much does Yoast SEO Premium cost?
Yoast SEO Premium costs $118.80 a year for one site, excluding VAT. Yoast WooCommerce SEO is $178.80 a year and Yoast SEO AI+ is $358.80 a year. There is no INR price or monthly plugin plan, and first purchases get a 30-day refund (AI+ has a one-week window).
Is Yoast SEO free to use?
Yes. The core plugin is free on WordPress.org with no time limit and covers sitemaps, schema, breadcrumbs, meta tags and the content analysis. Premium adds the redirect manager, internal linking suggestions, five keyphrases, AI tools and 24/7 support.
How do you set a focus keyphrase in Yoast?
Open the post in the editor, find the Yoast SEO panel and type the phrase in the focus keyphrase field. The analysis then checks the title, slug, introduction, subheadings and meta description for it. The free plugin allows one keyphrase per post and Premium allows five, with word-form matching.
Is Yoast SEO good enough for ranking?
Yoast fixes technical basics such as sitemaps, canonicals, schema and noindex rules, and prompts you to write better titles. Rankings still depend on content quality, backlinks and site speed. Google does not use Yoast's traffic-light scores, so a green light is a guide, not a guarantee.
Yoast SEO vs Rank Math: which is better?
Rank Math's free plan includes more, such as redirects, a 404 monitor and five focus keywords, and its PRO plan covers unlimited personal sites at a regular €8.99 a month, billed yearly. Yoast has a larger install base, cautious updates and 24/7 human support on paid plans. Pick Rank Math for many sites on a budget and Yoast for a single business site that values stability.
How do you set up Yoast SEO for a new site?
Install and activate the plugin, then click Start first-time configuration. The wizard covers SEO data optimisation, site representation (organisation or person, name and logo), social profiles and a usage-data choice. Afterwards, set unneeded archives to noindex and submit /sitemap_index.xml in Google Search Console.
What are the best Yoast SEO alternatives?
Rank Math is the main alternative and has a stronger free tier. All in One SEO (AIOSEO) and SEOPress are the other widely used WordPress SEO plugins. Each covers sitemaps, schema and meta tags, so the choice comes down to price per site and which paid features you need.
How do you fix the Yoast SEO sitemap 404 error?
Yoast's help page says to first go to Settings, Permalinks and click Save without changes to rebuild rewrite rules. Next, make sure each sitemap has published content, review your server's rewrite rules (Yoast has Apache and NGINX guides, or ask your host) and confirm XML sitemaps are enabled. Yoast adds that badly coded themes or other plugins usually cause the error, not Yoast itself.
Who is Yoast SEO best for?
The free plugin suits bloggers, small businesses and agencies building client sites on WordPress who want reliable technical SEO without setup work. Premium suits teams publishing often who need redirects, linking suggestions and support. WooCommerce SEO fits online shops with larger catalogues.
