Our verdict
Astra is a safe, light base for builder-led and WooCommerce sites, and the free theme alone carries many small projects. Buy the $69 Addon Only licence when you need the mega menu, shop layouts or conditional headers, and ignore the AI bundles unless you want premium templates for many client sites.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Astra Theme?
Version 4.14.1 of Astra landed on WordPress.org on 15 October 2026, and the listing still shows more than one million active installations with a 4.9-star average across 6,544 reviews. Numbers like that make Astra the default answer in a lot of WordPress threads, so this Astra WordPress theme review and pricing guide looks past the reputation. It checks what the free theme actually does, which paid tier you need, and how the regular prices compare once the introductory discount ends.
Astra is built by Brainstorm Force, a company founded in 2009 in Pune that now describes itself as remote-first. Its Indian roots matter for one practical reason covered later: the store terms are governed by Maharashtra law, yet everything is billed in US dollars.
Who picks Astra, and why the free theme gets so many installs
Astra suits three kinds of buyers. Freelancers who build brochure sites for clients like it because one theme covers almost any layout. Store owners use it as a light base for WooCommerce. Bloggers and small publishers pick it because the free version needs no licence key and works with any page builder.
The WordPress.org listing says the theme works with Spectra, Elementor, Beaver Builder and other builders, and that it supports WooCommerce, SureCart and similar shop plugins. Brainstorm Force's homepage claims the theme loads with less than 50 KB of resources. Treat that as a vendor claim rather than an independent test result, though it explains why people call it an astra lightweight theme. Pro also has an option to generate CSS as a file for faster loading.
Developers who want a blank starter theme with zero customizer options may find Astra too opinionated. So may anyone building fully in the block editor with a block theme, since Astra is a classic customizer theme.
Astra theme free vs Pro: where the free version stops
The free download is complete enough for many sites. You get the customizer, a drag-and-drop header and footer builder, container and sidebar layouts, typography and colour controls, transparent headers and per-page settings. Brainstorm Force's comparison page marks colours, typography and spacing as "limited" in the free theme and "full featured" in Pro. The same page shows the free header allows two HTML elements.
The Astra Pro addon is a separate plugin installed on top of the free theme. Its feature page lists these upgrades:
- More header and footer elements in the astra header builder, such as a language switcher, toggle button, extra button and widget slots, plus sticky options like "Sticky When Scroll Up" and shrink effects.
- Mega menu: the astra mega menu supports multi-column dropdowns, custom widths, icons, and dropdown content pulled from Gutenberg, Elementor, Beaver Builder, Divi or Brizy templates.
- Site Builder: what older docs called astra custom layouts. You build headers, footers, 404 pages and hook-based blocks, then show them with display rules by device, user role or page type.
- Blog layouts: grid, list and masonry archives, read time, an author box and autoloading of the previous post.
- Shop tools: astra woocommerce features include quick view, infinite scroll, an off-canvas filter sidebar, a modern cart, Ajax add to cart and a distraction-free two-step checkout.
- White label: rename the theme and plugin and swap screenshots and author details, which agencies use on client handovers.
Paying also opens the full astra global colors palette, page background styling and typography presets. LearnDash, LifterLMS and Easy Digital Downloads get deeper styling options in Pro too.
If your site is a blog or a five-page business site, the free theme plus a free page builder is often enough. Pay when you need a mega menu, a styled shop, a sticky header or conditional templates.
The Astra WordPress theme review and pricing table
The pricing page leads with discounted first-year figures, and a footnote says all renewals are charged at full price. The table below uses only the regular prices, with approximate rupee conversions at about ₹94.7 per dollar. There is no INR price list.
| Plan | Sites | Regular yearly | Regular lifetime | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Astra (free) | Unlimited | $0 | $0 | Core theme from WordPress.org |
| Astra Pro, Addon Only | 3 | $69 (approx. ₹6,500) | $349 (approx. ₹33,000) | Pro plugin only, premium support |
| Astra Pro + AI | 3 | $149 (approx. ₹14,100) | $449 (approx. ₹42,500) | Pro plugin, AI platform, one hosted site, a domain for one year |
| Essential Toolkit + AI | 10 | $299 (approx. ₹28,300) | $899 (approx. ₹85,100) | Adds Spectra Pro, premium templates, Ultimate Addons for Elementor |
| Business Toolkit + AI | 1,000 | $429 (approx. ₹40,600) | $1,299 (approx. ₹1.23 lakh) | Adds SureForms agency licence, AI Site Planner, five hosted sites |
Older guides refer to the middle tier as the astra essential bundle. It is now sold under the "Toolkit + AI" name, and the AI bundles include hosting and a domain that the Addon Only plan does not.
Astra Pro price: lifetime vs yearly licences
Lifetime licences are a regular option on the pricing page, toggled next to yearly billing, not a seasonal deal. At regular prices the lifetime Addon Only plan costs about five years of yearly renewals ($349 vs $69). On the AI bundles the gap is closer to three years, and there is a catch: the FAQ says the AI platform and bundled hosting run for three years from purchase, then renew annually at a price shown at checkout. The theme features stay yours.
Yearly plans auto-renew on the purchase anniversary under the store terms. If you let a licence lapse, the FAQ says your site keeps working, but updates and support stop and you lose access to premium template imports. All purchases carry a 14-day refund window, and renewals are normally non-refundable, so set a calendar reminder if you only need one year.
Importing Astra starter templates with Elementor or Spectra
Ready-made designs come from a separate free plugin, Starter Templates, which also has more than one million active installs on WordPress.org. Its listing advertises 300+ designs, of which more than 150 are free. Templates are built for Elementor, Spectra or the block editor. Beaver Builder templates were deprecated in version 4.4.16 of the plugin and now stay hidden unless a developer turns them back on with a code filter.
The import flow is short:
- Install Astra and the Starter Templates plugin from your dashboard.
- Pick your builder. For astra elementor sites that means Elementor; otherwise choose Spectra or the plain block editor.
- Choose a full site, a single page or a section block, then let the importer add the plugins it needs.
- Run imports on a fresh install, since the listing warns that a full import overwrites existing pages.
The plugin also offers an AI builder that asks for your business details and writes the copy. It needs a ZipWP account, while the ready-made designs do not. Premium Astra starter templates require the Essential Toolkit or Business Toolkit. Elementor's own Pro plan, from $60 a year for one site according to Elementor's pricing page, is only needed if you want its theme builder or form widgets on top.
Astra vs GeneratePress, and where Kadence fits
GeneratePress is Astra's closest rival among light classic themes. Its premium page lists GP Premium at $59 a year (approx. ₹5,600), with 60+ starter sites, a theme builder and a local font library, plus a 30-day refund window. GenerateBlocks Pro is a separate $99 yearly purchase. Astra Pro Addon Only costs $69 a year at the regular price and gets you a more visual header builder, the mega menu and deeper shop tools, while GeneratePress relies more on hooks and its own theme builder.
The choice usually comes down to how you build. Elementor or Beaver Builder users, and anyone running a store, tend to get more out of Astra's ready options. Developers comfortable with hooks and block layouts often prefer GeneratePress for its quieter settings and longer refund period.
Kadence often makes the same shortlists. Its prices are not covered here, so check Kadence's own site before comparing. Blocksy and Neve are other free alternatives worth testing on a staging copy.
Fixing a missing Astra header on one page
A header that disappears on one page is usually a per-page setting, not a bug. Open the page in the block editor, click the Astra icon at the top right and look at "Disable Elements". If "Disable Header" is ticked, untick it. Under "Advanced Settings", check the Header Rows toggle for "Disable Primary Header". In Elementor (Astra 4.11.3 and later), click the Astra icon at the top left to reach the Astra Meta Settings section of Page Settings, which carries the Disable Elements switches. If the header vanishes everywhere, look for a Site Builder header layout with display rules, or a starter template that set its own header.
Speed, SEO, data and licence terms
Astra works alongside SEO plugins such as Rank Math or Yoast, but rankings depend on content, hosting and how many plugins you stack on top. Brainstorm Force says the theme itself keeps front-end weight low. Heavy page builders and big template imports are what usually slow an Astra site down, so test with PageSpeed Insights after importing.
Brainstorm Force's privacy policy, updated in August 2026, says licence activation stores your site URL, name and email, and that its WordPress products send non-personal configuration data such as PHP and WordPress versions. The store terms license the WordPress products under GPL version 2.0 or later, and they also say download access ends once a licence key expires.
A sensible way to start with Astra
Install the free theme on a staging site, import one free starter template with your preferred builder, and build out the header, blog and shop pages. Note every place you hit a Pro lock. If the list is just a sticky header, a cheaper fix may be a small plugin. If it includes the mega menu, WooCommerce layouts and conditional headers, the $69 Addon Only licence is the most direct upgrade. Agencies with five or more client sites should price the Essential Toolkit instead.

Astra Theme FAQ
What is the Astra theme?
Astra is a free, lightweight WordPress theme made by Brainstorm Force, a company founded in 2009 in Pune, India. It works with Elementor, Spectra, Beaver Builder and the block editor, and supports WooCommerce. WordPress.org lists more than one million active installations.
How much does Astra Pro cost?
At regular prices, the Astra Pro Addon Only plan is $69 a year (approx. ₹6,500) for three sites, and Astra Pro + AI is $149 a year. Lifetime licences cost $349 and $449. The pricing page shows lower first-year prices, but renewals are charged at the full rate.
Is the Astra theme free?
Yes. The core Astra theme is free on WordPress.org and needs no licence key. Astra Pro is a paid plugin that adds a mega menu, Site Builder layouts, extra header elements, blog layouts and WooCommerce features.
How do I import starter templates in Astra?
Install the free Starter Templates plugin, choose Elementor, Spectra or the block editor, and pick a full site, page or section. The importer installs the plugins the design needs. Use a fresh install, because a full import overwrites existing pages.
Is the Astra theme good for SEO and speed?
Brainstorm Force claims the theme loads with less than 50 KB of resources, and the theme does not bundle a page builder. That gives a light base, but real speed and rankings depend on hosting, content and the page builder or plugins you add. Test with PageSpeed Insights after importing a template.
Astra vs GeneratePress vs Kadence: which should I choose?
Astra suits page builder users and WooCommerce stores, with Pro at $69 a year regular. GeneratePress Premium costs $59 a year and appeals to developers who like hooks and blocks, with a 30-day refund window. Kadence is the other common choice; check its official site for current plans before comparing.
Can I buy Astra in India?
Yes. Brainstorm Force sells to Indian buyers, but prices are in US dollars and there is no INR price list. The FAQ says it accepts major credit and debit cards and PayPal, with Paddle as the reseller, so expect your card's forex charges on top.
What are the best Astra theme alternatives?
GeneratePress, Kadence, Blocksy and Neve are the usual alternatives among light themes. GeneratePress Premium is $59 a year. If you build mainly with blocks, a block theme may suit you better than any classic theme.
How do I fix the Astra header not showing?
Open the page, click the Astra icon to open Astra Settings, and untick Disable Header under Disable Elements. Also check the Disable Primary Header toggle under Advanced Settings. If the header is missing site-wide, look for a Site Builder layout or template that replaces it.
Who is the Astra theme best for?
Astra fits freelancers and agencies building client sites with Elementor or Spectra, WooCommerce store owners, and bloggers who want a free, light theme. Developers who prefer a minimal theme or a full block theme may want GeneratePress or a block-based option.
