Our verdict

4.1out of 5

UpdraftPlus is the default WordPress backup plugin for good reason: the free version handles scheduled backups to Google Drive or Dropbox and clean restores. Pay for Business at $95 a year once you manage several sites and want snapshots before updates; single-site owners can stay free.

What is UpdraftPlus?

More than four million WordPress installs run UpdraftPlus, according to its wordpress.org listing, and most of those owners have never paid for it. That fact shapes this updraftplus backup plugin review and pricing guide. The free plugin already ships scheduled backups to Google Drive, Dropbox or Amazon S3, so the real question is what the $70 to $399 yearly Premium plans add and whether your site needs any of it.

What the free UpdraftPlus plugin handles on a live site

Install it from the WordPress plugin directory and you get a Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups screen with two schedules: one for files, one for the database. Each can run every 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours, daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, and you pick how many copies to keep. A news site that publishes ten times a day might back up the database every four hours and the files once a day. A brochure site can get by on weekly.

Free remote destinations, per the listing, are Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3 and S3-compatible services, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, DreamObjects, OpenStack Swift and plain email. Restores run from the same screen, with a choice of components, and the free build also includes basic migration with a search-and-replace engine that rewrites old URLs in the database. The self-hosted edition of UpdraftCentral, the dashboard for running many sites from one place, is free too.

The limit is one remote destination at a time. Free users also cannot fix an exact start hour for scheduled backups, which matters if you want runs at 3 a.m. IST when traffic is lowest.

Setting up an UpdraftPlus Google Drive backup on the free plan

This is the setup most Indian bloggers end up with, because a personal Google account already has 15GB lying around. Open the Settings tab, find "Choose your remote storage", click the Google Drive icon, connect your Google account when prompted and save the changes. Once Google grants access, every scheduled run uploads its zip archives to a folder in your Drive.

Two cautions. Google storage is shared with Gmail and Photos, so a growing media library can fill it quietly. And if someone later revokes the app's access from their Google account, uploads stop, so the email report (switch it on under Settings) is the only thing that will tell you. Owners who prefer the UpdraftPlus Dropbox connection get the same flow with a Dropbox login instead.

UpdraftPlus Premium price for each plan, with rupee estimates

Premium is sold only as a yearly subscription from teamupdraft.com, the parent brand formed in 2025. Every plan includes a year of updates, premium support and at least 1GB of UpdraftVault storage. The prices below are the regular yearly rates on the pricing page, which shows no first-year discount or struck-through figure; the rupee column is an approximate conversion at about ₹94.7 per US dollar, since no INR price is published.

PlanSitesRegular priceApprox. INRStorage
PersonalUp to 2$70/year≈₹6,6301GB
BusinessUp to 10$95/year≈₹9,0001GB
AgencyUp to 35$145/year≈₹13,7301GB
EnterpriseUnlimited$195/year≈₹18,4701GB
GoldUnlimited$399/year≈₹37,79050GB, plus UpdraftCentral

Look at the gap between Personal and Business. Five times the sites for $25 more makes Business the sensible buy for anyone with three or more properties. Plans renew automatically. You can cancel at any time. According to the pricing FAQ you keep the plugin you already have, but premium support, fixes and new features stop once the 12-month term ends.

The refund window needs a check before you pay. The guarantee section of the pricing page promises a refund within 14 days of purchase, yet the banner on the same page and the UpdraftClone page say 10 days, and the refund FAQ says requests are considered particularly within the first 10 days. Ask within 10 days and you are covered under either reading.

UpdraftVault and UpdraftClone cost extra

UpdraftVault is Team Updraft's own storage, built on Amazon S3. You can buy it with the free plugin as well. Regular rates are $35 a year for 5GB (≈₹3,315), $70 for 15GB, $175 for 50GB and $450 for 250GB, with quarterly billing also offered. Backups are kept as redundant copies, encrypted in transit and at rest, in data centres on your continent where possible. Team Updraft says it cannot promise the exact location, which matters if a client contract names a data region.

UpdraftClone spins up a temporary copy of your site on its own virtual server, handy for testing a PHP upgrade or a big plugin change. It runs on tokens: 5 for $15, 20 for $49 or 50 for $99 as one-off packs, or $12, $39 and $89 a month on subscription. A site under 25GB costs one token to start and one more for each further week. Team Updraft says clone tokens come with every Premium purchase but gives no number, so do not count on more than a short trial.

The Premium extras a busy site will notice

  • Automatic backup before updates. Clicking "update all" on twenty plugins is far less nerve-racking with a snapshot taken a minute earlier.
  • Incremental backups. Later runs add only changed files instead of zipping a 6GB uploads folder again.
  • More destinations, used together. OneDrive, Azure, Google Cloud, Backblaze B2, SFTP, SCP, pCloud and WebDAV join the list, and one backup can go to several places.
  • Database backup encryption with a passphrase you choose, plus detailed reports with checksums for each archive.
  • Multisite, WP-CLI and non-WordPress files, plus restoring archives made by some other backup plugins.

Many older tutorials mention the UpdraftPlus Migrator add-on. Team Updraft did not carry the old shop over to its new site; today migration run directly from the source site is listed as a Premium feature instead.

UpdraftPlus restore backup tutorial for a broken site

Say a theme update leaves the front end blank but wp-admin still loads. Using the restore steps in the official tutorial, the fix goes like this:

  • Open Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups and go to the Backup / Restore tab.
  • Scroll to Existing backups and click Restore beside the last good date.
  • In the wizard, tick only what you need: themes in this case, or plugins, uploads, others and the database for a full rollback.
  • Let it fetch the archives from remote storage, unpack them and report back. Then clear any cache.

Moving hosts? Install WordPress and the plugin on the new server, use "Upload backup files" on the Backup / Restore tab to add the zip archives, then restore everything. When even wp-admin is dead, the docs include a separate guide to restoring a site manually without WP Admin. Practise one backup restore on a WordPress staging copy before you need it for real.

When a backup sits at the same step for hours

Scheduled runs depend on WordPress's built-in scheduler, which fires when the site receives visits. A low-traffic site, a disabled cron setting or a security plugin blocking loopback requests can all leave a job waiting. Large uploads to Google Drive can also hit host time limits. Download the log from the plugin's settings page first, because it usually shows the last step reached. On cheap shared hosting, excluding cache folders and old zip files from the backup often solves it.

UpdraftPlus vs BackWPup for a small portfolio

BackWPup is the closest like-for-like rival: a free plugin with a paid Pro tier. Its pricing page lists Starter at $49 a year for 2 sites (≈₹4,640), Advanced at $99 for 5 and Pro at $199 for 20, each including encryption, premium storage and a restore app, with a 14-day refund.

For one or two sites BackWPup is $21 cheaper. From three sites up the maths flips: UpdraftPlus Business covers 10 sites for $95, a little less than BackWPup Advanced at $99 for five, and BackWPup needs its $199 plan to go past five. UpdraftPlus also has the larger install base, the bundled UpdraftCentral option on Gold and the clone service. Pick BackWPup if you want a cheap licence for two sites and like its restore app; pick UpdraftPlus for scale.

Where Duplicator fits instead

Duplicator began as a migration tool and still feels like one. Its pricing page lists normal prices of $79 for Basic (2 sites), $199 for Plus (5 sites), $399 for Pro (20 sites, with staging and multisite) and $599 for the Elite bundle (100 sites). The plan prices carry no billing-period label; the page says new buyers get introductory pricing and every renewal is charged at the full price. Duplicator Cloud storage is sold separately from $29 a year for 2GB. Basic allows one cloud destination; hourly backups start at Plus. At normal prices, UpdraftPlus costs less for regular scheduled backups on a few sites. For agencies that clone and ship client sites every week, Duplicator's packaged installer is worth a look.

Buying Premium from India

Nothing blocks Indian buyers, but there is no rupee price. The pricing page switches between US dollars, euros and pounds, so most Indian buyers pay in USD, and the card issuer may add its own forex markup. Budget roughly ₹6,600 for Personal or ₹9,000 for Business before that charge. Many Indian freelancers skip Premium and pair the free plugin with Google Drive, which is a reasonable choice for one or two sites.

Security fixes, data location and other trade-offs

The wordpress.org changelog flags security fixes in most releases from 1.26.5 to 1.26.12, including a restore flaw that could run injected SQL (1.26.9) and the revoking of UpdraftCentral Cloud keys created before a security incident (1.26.12). Turn on auto-updates for this plugin. Backups made inside WordPress also share the fate of your server: if the host is down or the account is suspended, the plugin cannot run. Keep at least one copy off the server. Premium support is ticket-based, with most replies within 24 hours except at weekends, according to the pricing FAQ. Free users rely on the wordpress.org forum.

Who should pay after this updraftplus backup plugin review and pricing check

Bloggers and small business owners with one site: stay free, send scheduled backups to Google Drive, and test a restore once a quarter. Freelancers with three to ten client sites: Business at $95 a year is the best value here, mainly for pre-update snapshots and multiple destinations. Agencies running dozens of sites should compare Agency or Enterprise against Gold, since Gold's 50GB of storage and UpdraftCentral replace separate purchases. Start by installing the free plugin today, run one manual backup, then decide.

UpdraftPlus FAQ

What is UpdraftPlus?

UpdraftPlus is a WordPress backup, restore and migration plugin from Team Updraft, a UK company. The wordpress.org listing shows over four million active installs and a 4.8 out of 5 rating. It saves files and the database on a schedule and sends copies to cloud storage.

How much is UpdraftPlus Premium?

Regular prices are $70 a year for Personal (2 sites), $95 for Business (10 sites), $145 for Agency (35 sites), $195 for Enterprise (unlimited) and $399 for Gold (unlimited sites, 50GB storage and UpdraftCentral). That is roughly ₹6,630 to ₹37,790 at about ₹94.7 per dollar. All plans bill yearly.

What does the free UpdraftPlus include?

The free plugin covers manual and scheduled backups (every 2 hours up to monthly), restores with component selection, basic migration with search and replace, and the self-hosted UpdraftCentral. It can send backups to one remote destination such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, FTP or email.

How do I restore a WordPress site with UpdraftPlus?

Go to Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups, open Backup / Restore and click Restore next to a backup under Existing backups. Choose the components (plugins, themes, uploads, others, database) and let the wizard finish. For a backup stored on your computer, use Upload backup files first.

Is UpdraftPlus backup reliable?

It is one of the most used WordPress backup plugins, with over 4 million installs and a 4.8 rating from about 8,700 reviews. Reliability still depends on your host, because time limits and blocked scheduled tasks can stop large backups. Test a restore on a staging copy so you know your archives are complete.

UpdraftPlus vs Duplicator: which is better?

UpdraftPlus suits ongoing scheduled backups and is cheaper, with Premium from $70 a year for two sites. Duplicator lists Basic at a normal price of $79 for two sites and is built around packaging and moving whole sites. Agencies that migrate often may prefer Duplicator; most site owners do fine with UpdraftPlus.

Can I buy UpdraftPlus in India?

Yes. There is no rupee price, so you pay the US dollar amount (euro and pound prices are also shown) with a card that allows international payments, and your bank may add a forex fee. Personal works out to about ₹6,630 a year and Business to about ₹9,000 before that fee.

What are the best UpdraftPlus alternatives?

BackWPup is the closest match, with paid plans from $49 a year (Starter, two sites). Duplicator is the stronger pick for frequent migrations, with Basic at a normal price of $79 for two sites; renewals are charged at that full price. Many managed hosts also take daily server snapshots, which work well as a second copy beside any plugin.

Why is my UpdraftPlus backup stuck?

Usually the WordPress scheduler is not firing, a security plugin is blocking loopback requests, or the host is ending long jobs before the upload finishes. Download the backup log from the settings page to see the last step reached. Excluding cache folders and old archives, or moving to a better host, fixes many cases.

Who is UpdraftPlus best for?

The free version suits bloggers and small businesses with one or two sites who want automatic copies in Google Drive or Dropbox. Business and Agency plans suit freelancers and agencies handling many client sites. Teams needing hourly server-level snapshots should look at host backups as well.
