Our verdict

4.0out of 5

Zendesk is one of the most complete support platforms you can buy, and Suite Team at $55 per agent is the sensible starting point for most teams. Professional is worth its extra $60 only if you need skills-based routing, IVR or Copilot. Small, price-sensitive teams in India will usually spend less with Freshdesk or Zoho Desk.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Zendesk?

A five-agent email desk on Zendesk costs US$95 a month on annual billing, yet most buyers comparing Zendesk pricing plans (Suite Team vs Professional) end up choosing between $55 and $115 per seat, because live chat, the help centre and AI agents only start at Suite Team. That jump, plus a per-resolution charge for AI that sits on top of the seat price, decides whether Zendesk makes sense for a ten-person support team in Pune or a 60-seat contact centre in Gurugram. The numbers below come from Zendesk's own pricing page and help centre as they stood in October 2026, set against Freshdesk and Intercom.

Zendesk Support Team price per agent, and what $19 really covers

Support Team is the cheapest door in. According to the pricing page it is $19 per agent per month if you commit for a year and $25 if you pay month to month. For that you get email-based ticketing, ticket routing, prebuilt analytics dashboards, pre-written responses, customer context in the ticket sidebar, and automations. In daily use the parts that matter are macros and triggers: a macro applies a canned reply plus field changes in one click, and a trigger fires the moment a ticket is created or updated (auto-tagging refund requests, say, or alerting a lead when a VIP writes in).

What it leaves out is just as important. There is no messaging widget and no knowledge base on this tier, and AI agents only appear in the feature list from Suite Team upward. If your customers only email you, it is a tidy, well-tested ticketing system. If they also expect WhatsApp-style chat on your site, you are already shopping in the Suite range.

Zendesk pricing plans: Suite Team vs Professional, line by line

Suite Enterprise + CopilotTalk to salesTalk to salesIntelligent Triage, Auto Assist, approval workflows, sandbox, custom agent roles

Suite Team is the plan most small companies should price first. It bundles Zendesk messaging for web and mobile chat, built-in telephony, a knowledge base for your help centre, and AI agents that answer from those articles.

Moving a seat from Team to Professional adds $60 a month on annual billing, or $720 per agent per year. Ten agents means $7,200 extra a year, so the upgrade has to pay for itself. The features that usually justify it are skills-based routing (Hindi-speaking tickets go to agents tagged for Hindi), an IVR menu for phone queues, and eligibility for the Copilot add-on, which the pricing page says can only be attached to Professional and higher. One more gate is easy to miss: Zendesk's help article on ticket forms lists multiple forms for Suite Growth, Professional, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus, plus Support Enterprise. Suite Team is not on that list, and Growth no longer appears as a plan on the public pricing table, so new buyers need Professional for it.

Monthly billing carries a real premium: about 26% on Suite Team, about 30% on Professional and roughly 32% on Support Team. Unless you expect to cut seats within the year, commit annually.

Zendesk AI agents pricing after the May 2026 resolution tiers

AI agents are not billed per seat. Zendesk charges per automated resolution: $1.50 each when you commit to a volume and $2.00 on pay as you go. The pricing table also includes a monthly allowance of 5 automated resolutions per agent on the Team plans and 10 on Professional, capped at 10,000 a year.

What counts as a resolution changed on 18 May 2026. A support article on resolution tiers splits AI conversations into three buckets. An assisted escalation (the bot gathered details or authenticated the customer, then a human finished) is free. A contained resolution (the customer simply stopped asking) is also free. Only a verified resolution, where an LLM reviews the finished conversation and confirms the issue was solved, draws from your allowance and is billed.

If your AI agent verifies 2,000 resolutions a month on committed pricing, that is roughly $3,000 on top of seats. Copilot, the agent-assist layer that suggests replies and next steps, is a separate $50 per agent per month on annual billing, so a fully loaded Professional seat runs to $165 before any AI resolutions.

Paying from India: dollars only, no rupee invoice

Zendesk has offices in Bengaluru and Pune, but its billing is not localised. The pricing FAQ lists four billing currencies (USD, EUR, GBP and BRL), and the rupee is not one of them. In practice an Indian team pays in US dollars, and the bank's forex markup becomes an extra cost to factor in. For ten agents on Suite Team the annual bill is $6,600; on Professional it is $13,800. The Trust Center says service data sits mainly in AWS data centres in the US, the EEA and Asia Pacific, and the pricing page's Data Center Location option also lists the UK. No dedicated India region is mentioned.

Running the Zendesk free trial as a real test

The trial lasts 14 days and gives you everything in Suite Professional, with Copilot switched on by default; other add-ons need a call with sales. There is no free plan. Zendesk also runs a startup programme for qualifying young companies; check its page for current eligibility.

On day one, forward your support inbox and verify the address. Then write five macros for your most common replies, add two triggers, and set one Zendesk SLA policy so you can see breach timers on real tickets. Publish ten help articles, switch on the messaging widget on a staging site, and point an AI agent at those articles. By day ten you will know how many questions the bot verifies on its own. Keep in mind the trial runs on Professional, so features such as skills-based routing will vanish if you then buy Suite Team.

Building a ticket form in Admin Center

Forms decide which fields a customer fills in before a ticket exists. The path is Admin Center, then Objects and rules, then Tickets, then Forms, and Add form. Give it a name agents will see, optionally a separate title for customers, restrict it to certain brands if you run several, drag in active ticket fields, and save. An account can hold up to 300 forms. Field settings, such as whether a field is required, live on the field itself, so a required "Order ID" is required on every form that uses it.

When incoming email refuses to become tickets

Zendesk's email troubleshooting guide traces this common setup complaint to a short list of causes. Forwarding from Gmail or Outlook may never have been verified, often because of SPF or DNS records. The message may have gone to an alias or a Google Group, which Zendesk does not support as a support address. The spam filter may have parked it in the Suspended tickets view; recovering a few legitimate mails teaches the filter. Senders without SPF, DKIM or DMARC can also be flagged. And sometimes the ticket exists but sits in a view or group you cannot see. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to register, so do not panic on day one.

Zendesk vs Freshdesk, with Intercom as the third option

Freshdesk is the closest like-for-like rival and the one Indian SMBs usually shortlist. Its pricing page lists Growth at $19, Pro at $55 and Enterprise at $89 per agent per month on annual billing, with a 14-day trial of the paid plans. Freddy AI Copilot is $29 per agent, and AI agent sessions come with 500 included, then $49 per 100. Seat for seat, Freshdesk's top public tier costs less than Zendesk's Professional, and its assist add-on is cheaper than Copilot.

Intercom approaches the same job from the chat side. Its pricing page shows Essential at $29, Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132 per seat on annual billing, and its Fin AI agent starts at $0.99 per outcome. For a product-led SaaS whose customers mostly ask questions inside the app, Intercom can feel more natural. For a mixed email, phone and chat operation with complex routing and audit needs, Zendesk's routing depth, sandbox and compliance paperwork carry more weight.

The compliance file Zendesk can hand a procurement team

The Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and ISO 42001 for AI management, plus FedRAMP LI-SaaS authorisation. HIPAA workloads need the Advanced Compliance add-on and a signed BAA. GDPR is handled through a data processing agreement and binding corporate rules.

On AI data, the Trust Center says service data is used to train Zendesk's generic, cross-account models after sanitisation. The help centre adds that identifier fields such as usernames and email addresses are left out, and an NLP pass strips identifying details from free text. No opt-out route is described. Third-party LLM providers do not train on Zendesk customer data, and OpenAI-powered features use zero data retention endpoints.

Extending it with marketplace apps, Sunshine and the API

Zendesk marketplace apps put tools such as Shopify, Jira, Slack and Salesforce in the ticket sidebar. For Zendesk Sunshine Conversations, the pricing page lists 1,000 monthly active users included, with extra users sold at $50 per pack of 2,500. Developers get REST APIs, webhooks, and SDKs for Android, iOS, Unity and the Web Widget.

Where the Zendesk bill creeps up

  • The useful channels begin at $55 per seat, nearly three times the Support Team price.
  • AI is metered per verified resolution, so a busy bot adds a bill that grows with ticket volume.
  • Copilot, workforce engagement ($50) and Contact Center ($83) are each priced per agent on top.
  • No INR billing, and monthly plans cost roughly 25% to 32% more than annual.
  • Admin settings are deep; expect a week of setup before agents are comfortable.

Which support teams get their money's worth

Zendesk suits companies with five or more full-time agents across at least two channels, teams that need audit trails and certifications for enterprise clients, and global brands running several help centres from one account. A two-person startup answering a few dozen emails a week will spend less, and set up faster, with Freshdesk or Zoho Desk, and an in-app SaaS might prefer Intercom. Start on the trial, model your real ticket volume against the AI resolution price, and only then sign the annual contract.

Zendesk FAQ

What is Zendesk?

Zendesk is a cloud customer service platform from Zendesk, Inc., headquartered in San Francisco; it was started in Copenhagen in 2007, according to published company histories. It combines email ticketing, live chat and messaging, voice, a help centre and AI agents in one agent workspace. Zendesk says more than 80,000 companies use it.

Does Zendesk have a free plan?

No. Zendesk does not offer a free-forever plan. The 14-day free trial gives access to Suite Professional features with Copilot switched on, and Zendesk separately runs a startup programme for qualifying young companies.

How much does Zendesk cost per agent per month?

Support Team is $19 per agent per month billed annually or $25 monthly. Suite Team is $55 annually or $69 monthly, and Suite Professional is $115 annually or $149 monthly. Suite Enterprise is quoted by sales, and the Copilot add-on is $50 per agent per month on Professional and higher.

How do I create a ticket form in Zendesk?

In Admin Center, open Objects and rules, then Tickets, then Forms, and click Add form. Name it, choose brands, drag in active ticket fields and save. Zendesk's help centre lists multiple forms for Suite Growth, Professional and Enterprise tiers plus Support Enterprise (not Suite Team), with a cap of 300 forms per account.

Is Zendesk secure and compliant?

Zendesk's Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and 42001 certifications and FedRAMP LI-SaaS authorisation. HIPAA use needs the Advanced Compliance add-on and a BAA, and GDPR is covered by a data processing agreement and binding corporate rules.

Zendesk vs Freshdesk vs Intercom: which should I choose?

Freshdesk lists $19, $55 and $89 per agent on annual billing and is usually cheaper at the top end. Intercom starts at $29 per seat and suits chat-first SaaS products with its Fin AI agent at $0.99 per outcome. Zendesk costs more but offers deeper routing, voice, sandboxing and compliance for multi-channel teams.

Can I pay Zendesk in INR?

No. Zendesk's pricing FAQ lists USD, EUR, GBP and BRL as billing currencies, and INR is not offered. Indian customers usually pay in US dollars, so allow for bank forex charges.

What are the best Zendesk alternatives for small business?

Freshdesk is the closest match on features with a similar $19 entry price and cheaper upper tiers. Zoho Desk is a common lower-cost pick for Indian SMBs, and Intercom fits small SaaS teams whose support happens mostly in chat.

Why are Zendesk emails not creating tickets?

The usual causes are unverified email forwarding (often SPF or DNS issues), mail sent to an unsupported alias or group, or messages caught in the Suspended tickets view by the spam filter. Senders without SPF, DKIM or DMARC can also be flagged, and DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to apply.

Who should use Zendesk?

Zendesk fits support teams of roughly five or more agents handling email, chat and phone together, and companies that need certifications and audit features for enterprise customers. Very small teams on a tight budget will usually get better value from Freshdesk or Zoho Desk.
