Our verdict

4.1out of 5

Intercom is one of the strongest chat-first helpdesks, and Fin's $0.99 outcome price beats Zendesk's AI resolution rates for busy teams. The catch is the variable bill: seats, Fin usage and add-ons stack up, so set a hard Fin limit and run the 14-day trial on real questions before committing. Young startups should also look at Intercom's Early Stage program.

What is Intercom?

Two meters run on every Intercom bill: a monthly fee for each teammate seat, and $0.99 every time the Fin agent closes out a conversation. That second number is why searches for Intercom pricing, Fin AI agent cost included, have grown so much since 2023. A ten-person support desk can pay more for Fin than for the seats themselves in a busy month, or far less if Fin handles only a trickle. This review sets out the current numbers from Intercom's pricing page and help center, works through a realistic team budget, and compares it with Zendesk so you can judge whether the spend makes sense for your business.

A quick note on the company. Intercom was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in San Francisco, with a large engineering base in Dublin. On 12 May 2026 the company renamed itself Fin, after its AI agent, but the helpdesk product keeps the Intercom name. A month later, on 15 June 2026, Salesforce announced a definitive agreement to buy Fin for about $3.6 billion, with closing expected in Salesforce's fiscal fourth quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory clearance. The announcement did not change the published plans, but buyers signing multi-year contracts should keep an eye on renewal terms.

Intercom Essential vs Advanced vs Expert: which seat tier fits

Intercom sells three plans, and the pricing page lists the annual rate first. Monthly billing costs more per seat, as the plans help article confirms.

PlanBilled annuallyBilled monthlyFree Lite seatsWhat it adds
Essential$29 per seat/mo$39 per seat/moNoneFin, Messenger, shared inbox and ticketing, pre-built reports, public help center
Advanced$85 per seat/mo$99 per seat/mo20Multiple team inboxes, workflow builder, round-robin assignment, private and multilingual help center
Expert$132 per seat/mo$139 per seat/mo50SSO and identity management, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand Messenger and help center

There is no minimum or maximum seat count. Essential suits a founder plus one or two support hires who mostly answer chat and email from one queue. The jump to Advanced is really about the workflow builder and team routing: once you have separate billing, technical and onboarding queues, round-robin assignment and Intercom workflows save more time than they cost. The 20 Lite seats are useful too, because sales or engineering colleagues can view and comment on conversations without a paid seat.

Expert makes sense mainly for compliance. Healthcare companies needing HIPAA, or groups running several brands from one workspace, end up here.

How the Intercom Fin per resolution price became a per-outcome charge

Intercom used to describe Fin's fee as a per-resolution charge. The help center now calls it a Fin outcome, still $0.99 each, and there are two kinds. A resolution counts when the customer confirms the answer helped, or leaves without asking for more after Fin's last reply. A procedure handoff counts when Fin finishes a Procedure you built that is designed to end with a pass to a human or a workflow.

Several things are not billed. A customer asking for a human, or showing frustration until Fin hands over, is not billed. Escalations triggered by your workspace rules, failed Procedures and chats that auto-close after Fin asks a clarifying question are also free. Each conversation is billed once at most, and if a customer returns to a "resolved" thread needing more help, the outcome is deducted. You can set usage reminders and a hard spending limit, which every finance team should do on day one.

Fin also works on top of other helpdesks such as Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshdesk. In that setup there are no Intercom seats, only the $0.99 outcome rate, although the plans article says minimum commitments apply. A Fin help center article dated September 2026 describes a $49 monthly base plan for Fin running on another helpdesk, with 50 resolutions included and $0.99 for each one after. The main pricing page does not show that base, so get it confirmed in writing before you budget around it.

Intercom pricing: Fin AI agent cost for a 10-agent team

Take a growing SaaS company with 10 agents on Advanced, billed annually, and 1,000 Fin outcomes a month. Seats come to $850 and Fin adds $990, so the bill is about $1,840 a month before add-ons or phone and WhatsApp usage. This is why buyers ask why Intercom feels expensive: the seat price looks moderate, but the variable part grows with your ticket volume, and add-ons sit on top.

The paid add-ons listed on the pricing page are:

  • Copilot at $29 per agent per month for unlimited use. Without it, each full seat gets 10 Copilot conversations a month.
  • Proactive Support Plus at $99 a month, which brings Posts, Checklists, product tours, Surveys and the Series campaign builder, with extra charges once you pass the monthly message allowance.
  • Pro from $100 a month, covering Operator (an agent for customer operations) and AI tools that review conversation quality and suggest Fin improvements.

Live chat, support email, in-app chats, banners and tooltips are free and unlimited on every plan. Email campaigns, SMS, WhatsApp and phone are pay-as-you-go, billed at the rates on a separate channel pricing page.

What the Intercom free trial includes in 14 days

The trial lasts 14 days and needs no credit card. It covers your chosen plan plus Fin, Copilot, Pro and Proactive Support Plus, so you see the full product rather than a stripped version. There is no permanent free plan. When the trial ends you pick a plan to keep using the workspace. If you need invoicing rather than card payment, raise it with sales before signing.

Intercom also runs an Early Stage program for young startups, and eligibility is set out on its own application page.

Indian buyers should know there is no INR price list. Intercom lists its prices in US dollars only, so expect forex markup from your bank on an international card and plan for GST under the reverse-charge rules your accountant applies to imported software.

Putting the Intercom Messenger on your site in an afternoon

Most setups start with the Intercom Messenger, the chat widget customers see. Open the Messenger install screen in your workspace settings and pick the snippet for anonymous visitors or for signed-in users. Swap in your workspace app ID and paste the code just before the closing body tag. Single-page apps and tag manager setups have their own guides in the help center, and workspaces hosted in the EU or Australia need the regional settings those guides describe.

Two settings deserve attention early. Limit the Messenger to domains you trust, and if you pass user data, turn on identity verification so nobody can impersonate a signed-in customer. Then connect your docs: Fin answers from your help center articles, PDFs and website pages, so content quality shapes its answers more than any setting does.

Where Fin is accurate, and where you still need guardrails

According to Salesforce's acquisition announcement, Fin serves more than 30,000 companies and runs on Fin's own Apex model. Intercom's legal guide lists OpenAI, Anthropic (directly and through AWS Bedrock), Azure OpenAI and Google Vertex as model providers, and says these providers are contractually barred from training on your inputs or outputs. Intercom itself does fine-tune Fin models on anonymized customer data, though customers can ask to be opted out of that training.

Accuracy depends on your content. Fin only answers from sources you connect, and the guide puts responsibility on the customer to test its behaviour before going live. Use the preview and test sets with real past questions, restrict Fin to specific audiences at first, and write explicit handoff rules for refunds, legal issues and angry customers. Data can be hosted in the US, EU or Australia, but regional hosting has eligibility rules, so read the regional hosting article before you create the workspace.

Intercom vs Zendesk on price per agent and per AI answer

Zendesk is the obvious rival. Its pricing page lists Support Team at $19 per agent a month annually ($25 monthly), Suite Team at $55 ($69) and Suite Professional at $115 ($149). Each plan includes a small per-agent allowance of automated resolutions, with extras at $1.50 each on committed volume or $2.00 pay as you go. Copilot is $50 per agent a month, billed yearly.

Running the same 10-agent, 1,000-answer example on Suite Professional: seats cost $1,150, and 1,000 resolutions at the committed $1.50 add up to $1,500, a little less once the included allowance is netted off. Call it $2,500 to $2,650 a month. Intercom comes out cheaper here because Fin's rate is lower. Zendesk is cheaper if you barely use AI and want a basic email ticket desk, where Support Team at $19 undercuts Essential. Zendesk also has a deeper marketplace and more mature voice and omnichannel routing for large contact centres. Intercom is stronger on the in-app Messenger, intercom outbound messages such as banners and tours, and an inbox built around chat first.

Rough edges in the Intercom inbox and billing

The Intercom inbox handles conversations and Intercom tickets well on the web, and teammates can reply on the go through the Intercom Conversations app for iOS and Android. Check its feature set against the web inbox before you count on it for ticket work. Reporting beyond the pre-built set, multibrand support and SSO sit behind Advanced or Expert. The variable Fin charge makes monthly cost hard to forecast, and several channel rates are not printed on the main pricing page. Intercom also works as a light customer data platform for the user attributes and events you send it, but it is not a replacement for a full CDP or CRM.

Who gets the most from paying for Intercom

Intercom fits product-led SaaS, fintech and e-commerce brands whose customers are already logged in, where in-app chat and an AI agent can absorb a large share of repeat questions. Start with the 14-day trial on Advanced, import your top 50 help articles, run Fin against last month's real questions, and set a hard outcome limit before switching it on for everyone. If your volume is mostly phone calls or simple email tickets, a cheaper helpdesk will do. Teams weighing cheaper alternatives can look at Zendesk Support Team, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Crisp or Tidio, accepting a weaker AI agent in exchange for lower Intercom seats costs.

Intercom FAQ

What is Intercom?

Intercom is a customer service platform with a chat Messenger, shared inbox, ticketing, help center and the Fin AI agent. It was founded in 2011 and is based in San Francisco. The company renamed itself Fin in May 2026, but the helpdesk product is still sold as Intercom.

Does Intercom have a free plan?

No. Intercom has no permanent free plan, only a 14-day free trial that needs no credit card. Young startups can also check whether they qualify for Intercom's Early Stage program.

How much does Intercom cost per seat?

Billed annually, Essential is $29, Advanced is $85 and Expert is $132 per seat per month. Monthly billing costs $39, $99 and $139 per seat. Fin AI agent usage at $0.99 per outcome and any add-ons are charged on top.

How do you install Intercom Messenger on a website?

Open the Messenger install screen in your workspace settings, choose the visitor or signed-in user snippet, add your app ID and paste it just before the closing body tag. Restrict the Messenger to trusted domains and turn on identity verification if you pass logged-in user data. Single-page apps and tag manager setups have their own guides.

Is Intercom Fin AI accurate and safe?

Fin answers only from content you connect, such as help center articles and website pages, so accuracy depends heavily on that content, and Intercom asks customers to test Fin before going live. Third-party model providers are contractually barred from training on your data. Intercom does fine-tune Fin models on anonymized customer data, and customers can ask to opt out of that.

How does Intercom compare with Drift and Zendesk?

Zendesk is a broad ticketing and contact-centre suite starting at $19 per agent a month, with AI resolutions charged at $1.50 to $2.00 beyond the included pool. Intercom is chat-first with a stronger in-app Messenger and a cheaper $0.99 Fin outcome. Drift, which Salesloft acquired in 2024, focuses on sales and conversational marketing chat rather than support ticketing.

Can Indian startups pay Intercom in INR?

No INR price list is published. Intercom lists prices in US dollars, so an Indian card payment will carry bank forex charges. Ask sales about invoicing if you sign a contract, and handle GST on imported software with your accountant.

What are the best cheaper alternatives to Intercom?

Zendesk Support Team, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk, Crisp and Tidio all cost less for basic chat and email support. The trade-off is usually a weaker AI agent, fewer in-app messaging tools or less polished workflows. Compare the AI resolution price, not just the seat price.

Why is Intercom so expensive?

The seat price is only part of the bill. Fin charges $0.99 per outcome, so cost grows with ticket volume, and add-ons such as Copilot ($29 per agent), Proactive Support Plus ($99 a month) and Pro (from $100 a month) sit on top. SMS, WhatsApp, phone and email campaigns are pay-as-you-go.

Who should use Intercom?

Intercom suits product-led SaaS, fintech and e-commerce businesses with logged-in customers who chat inside the app or website. It works best where an AI agent can handle many repeat questions. Phone-heavy contact centres and teams needing only a simple email ticket queue can find cheaper tools.
