Our verdict

3.7out of 5

You.com is a capable cited-answer assistant with more models and agent tools than most, and YouPro at $19.99 a month is fairly priced for heavy researchers. The company now puts its energy into APIs, so developers get the clearest deal, while individuals should test the free tier against Perplexity before paying.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is You.com?

In September 2025 You.com raised $100 million at a $1.5 billion valuation and told the press its future lay in APIs for AI agents, not in a consumer search box. Thirteen months on, both halves still exist, and that split is the first thing to understand before you pay. This you.com ai search engine review and pricing guide covers the chat app that individuals can subscribe to, the YouPro plan, the Research and ARI agents, and the per-call API that now brings in most of the company's attention.

Two products under one name: the chat app and the API business

Open you.com today and the homepage sells developer endpoints: Web Search, Contents, Answer, Research and Finance Research APIs, plus an MCP server and agent skills. The homepage navigation no longer links to chat at all; you reach it from the business page or the about page, which still lists Chat among the products. It still works for free users, and the iOS and Android apps (now titled "You.com - Enterprise grade AI") sell a YouPro subscription.

The company behind both is SuSea, Inc., based at 417 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Richard Socher founded it in 2020, according to Unite.AI, and the about page lists him as CEO, with Saahil Jain named CTO in 2026. In its September 2025 funding report, Unite.AI said the API side handled more than one billion queries a month, with DuckDuckGo, Databricks and Harvey AI among customers.

What the free chat tier includes, and the ads that pay for it

Yes, You.com is free to use for basic AI search and chat. You can ask questions, get answers with numbered source links, and upload a file through the paperclip button. The catch sits in the privacy policy updated on 22 September 2026: free users see ads, and de-identified chat data may be used to pick which ads appear, with partners such as Microsoft setting cookies. The policy says paid and enterprise users are not served ads.

Free usage caps are not listed on any public page, so check the upgrade screen inside the app for the current split between free and paid features.

You.com Pro price: $19.99 a month through the app stores

You.com no longer shows consumer plans on its pricing page, which now lists API rates only. The clearest official figure for individuals comes from the App Store listing: YouPro costs $19.99 per month or $179.99 per year, which works out to roughly $15 a month on annual billing. The cancellation help page confirms YouPro can also be bought on the web and through Google Play.

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free (chat)$0AI search and chat with citations, file upload, ads shown
YouPro$19.99/mo or $179.99/yr (App Store)No ads; app listing highlights ARI, custom agents and 20+ models
Team / Max / Enterprise (chat)Not publishedTeam-shared agents, SSO, contract terms such as Zero Data Retention
API free$0100 Web Search queries a day through the MCP server, no key needed
API pay as you goFrom $1 per 1,000 pages (Contents)All endpoints and SDKs, no seats or platform fee

There is no rupee price on any You.com page. Indian buyers paying through the App Store or Play Store will see a local amount set by the store, and web purchases are billed in dollars, so add GST and card forex charges to the sticker figure. The enterprise help guide mentions Max users and the privacy policy mentions a Team Plan, but neither carries a public price.

Smart, Research, Creative and Genius: the built-in agents

You.com's enterprise onboarding guide describes three ways to pick how a question is answered. Auto lets the system choose a model, Express goes for speed on everyday tasks, and Custom lets you choose a specific model or agent. The guide has no separate smart mode; Smart is one of four built-in agents, beside Research, Creative and Genius.

Custom agents are the more useful idea for regular work. You write instructions once, attach sources, and keep the agent private, share it with your team or publish it. An agency could build a "client brief checker" agent that every account manager reuses. Projects group related chats, and conversations can be shared, renamed or moved between projects.

You.com research mode for longer answers with citations

To use You.com research mode, open the mode menu next to the prompt box, choose Custom and select the Research agent, then ask a question that needs several sources, for example "compare UPI transaction fees charged by the top five Indian payment gateways in 2026". Use the web toggle beside the mode menu to control which sources it searches, and attach PDFs if the answer should draw on your own documents.

Research answers take longer than a normal reply and come back with inline numbered citations. Open any source you plan to quote: a citation shows where a claim came from, not that it is right.

Developers get the same idea through the Research API, where a research_effort setting runs from lite to frontier. Higher tiers run more searches, read pages more closely and cross-check more, and the docs say frontier jobs can run for minutes in background mode.

You.com agents ARI: reports built from 500+ sources

ARI (Advanced Research and Insights) is You.com's heavy research agent, launched in February 2025 for business users. The current app listings describe it as processing more than 500 sources and returning a cited report, and they carry You.com's own claim that ARI outperformed OpenAI's Deep Research in 76% of head-to-head tests. That is the company's figure, the listings give no test method, and we found no independent benchmark behind it. The February 2025 launch post spoke of up to 400 sources, so the source count has grown since.

In practice the ARI research agent suits market sizing, competitor scans and literature reviews where you want breadth first and plan to edit the draft yourself. Check the app listing and the agent menu inside the product to confirm it is included in your plan.

Which models answer your prompts

Both app listings advertise more than 20 LLMs, and the App Store version names OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and DeepSeek as providers, with Auto mode choosing one per task and a manual switch if you prefer a specific model. You.com does not publish a fixed list of versions on its public pages, and the line-up changes as providers ship new models, so check the picker inside the app. Multiple LLMs under one subscription is the main draw over a single-vendor assistant.

You.com vs Perplexity for everyday research

Perplexity is the obvious rival: also an AI search engine with citations, also sold as a paid Pro plan. Its official Pro page did not show a price when we checked, so compare the current figure on Perplexity's own site. Perplexity puts most of its effort into the consumer answer engine. You.com's consumer side gets fewer visible updates, but its custom agents, team sharing and the ARI report agent give it more structure for repeat business tasks.

Against Google, the difference is format. Google Search returns links and, increasingly, AI Overviews, free and with no account. You.com gives a written answer with sources and lets you follow up in a thread, which suits research more than quick lookups.

Other alternatives worth testing: ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month for general chat with search built in, Claude for long documents, and Google Gemini if your team already lives in Workspace.

What You.com does with your prompts and files

The privacy policy states that You.com does not use the substance of your prompts, files or outputs to train or fine-tune its own models, and that its contracts bar model providers (it names OpenAI, Anthropic and Google) from training on that data unless you opt in separately. That is a clear, useful line. It is not the same as a privacy search engine, though: prompts are still routed to third-party providers, retention periods are not fixed, and free accounts are part of the ad system.

Enterprise buyers can contract for Zero Data Retention, and the API pricing page advertises SOC 2 certification, DPA readiness and CCPA compliance. For client work, a paid or enterprise account is the safer choice. The privacy policy says nothing about commercial use of outputs, so read the terms for your plan before you sell generated material.

API costs for developers building on You.com search

The pricing page is unusually plain. Web Search costs $5 per 1,000 calls, the Contents API $1 per 1,000 pages, and the Answer API $5 per 1,000 calls. Research runs from $12 (lite) to $50 (standard), $100 (deep), $450 (exhaustive) and $1,200 (frontier) per 1,000 calls, and Finance Research costs $110 (deep) or $500 (exhaustive). Frontier runs only in background mode. Authentication is an API key in the X-API-Key header, and pay-as-you-go accounts get every endpoint, the SDKs and the MCP server with auto top-up. Enterprise contracts add custom rate limits, dedicated capacity and SLA-backed support.

For an Indian SaaS team adding grounded answers to a support bot, 50,000 Answer calls would cost about $250 at list price.

Where You.com frustrates paying users

  • Muddled plan information: consumer prices sit in app store listings, not on the pricing page, and Max and Team are mentioned without prices.
  • No India pricing: you pay in dollars or the store's local equivalent, with no rupee plan or UPI option listed.
  • Consumer focus has faded: company energy clearly goes to the API, so feature updates for individual users may lag Perplexity's.
  • Refund rules: cancelling a web subscription stops renewal but gives no refund for the unused period.

You.com AI search engine review and pricing: who should pay

Pay for YouPro if you want several frontier models, reusable custom agents and the ARI report agent in one $19.99 subscription, and you are comfortable verifying citations yourself. Developers building agents or RAG pipelines should look at the API first, because the free 100 daily searches and clear per-call prices make it cheap to test. Skip it if all you need is quick answers, since the free tiers of Perplexity, ChatGPT or Google cover that too.

A sensible first week with You.com

  • Use the free tier for three or four real work questions and compare its citations against a Perplexity answer to the same prompt.
  • Try the Research agent on one question that needs ten or more sources and time how long the answer takes.
  • Build one custom agent with fixed instructions for a task you repeat weekly.
  • If you upgrade, pick the annual YouPro plan only after a month on monthly billing.
  • Developers can connect the MCP server without an API key and stay inside the 100 free daily searches while prototyping.

You.com FAQ

What is You.com?

You.com is an AI search and chat assistant that answers questions with cited sources. It is run by SuSea, Inc. in San Francisco, with founder Richard Socher as CEO. It also sells search, answer and research APIs to developers, which is now the company's main business focus.

Is You.com free?

Yes. The chat app has a free tier for AI search, cited answers and file uploads, but free users see ads chosen partly from de-identified chat data. Developers also get 100 free Web Search API queries a day through the MCP server without an API key.

How much does You.com Pro cost?

The App Store lists YouPro at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year, about $15 a month on annual billing. You.com publishes no rupee price, so Indian buyers pay the store's local amount or dollars on the web, plus GST and forex charges.

How does You.com compare with Perplexity?

Both give cited AI answers and sell a paid Pro tier; YouPro is $19.99 a month on the App Store, and Perplexity's current Pro price is on its own site. Perplexity focuses on its consumer answer engine, while You.com adds reusable custom agents, team sharing and the ARI report agent, but puts most company effort into its API business.

How is You.com different from Google?

Google Search returns links and AI Overviews for free with no account needed. You.com writes a full answer with numbered sources and lets you ask follow-ups in a thread, which suits research questions better than quick factual lookups.

Is You.com private?

Its privacy policy (updated 22 September 2026) says prompts, files and outputs are not used to train You.com's models, and providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are contractually barred from training on them. Prompts still pass to those providers, and free accounts are shown ads, so paid or enterprise plans with Zero Data Retention are safer for sensitive work.

What models does You.com use?

Both app listings advertise more than 20 LLMs, and the App Store listing names OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and DeepSeek. Auto mode picks a model per task, or you can choose one manually in Custom mode. You.com does not publish a fixed version list, so check the in-app picker.

How do you use You.com Research mode?

Open the mode menu beside the prompt box, pick Custom and choose the Research agent, then ask a question that needs several sources. You can control sources with the web toggle and attach PDFs. Answers take longer and return inline numbered citations.

What are the best You.com alternatives?

Perplexity is the closest match for cited AI search. ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) suits general chat with search, Claude handles long documents well, and Google Gemini fits teams already using Google Workspace. For developers, other search APIs compete with You.com's per-call pricing.

Who should use You.com?

It suits researchers, analysts and agencies who want several AI models, reusable custom agents and long cited reports in one subscription. Developers building AI agents or RAG systems should look at the API. Casual users who only need quick answers can stay on free tools.
