Our verdict
Wordtune is still a cheap, pleasant way to get cleaner English sentences in the browser, and Advanced at $4.89 a month on annual billing is easy to justify for light daily use. The bigger risk is the reported end of consumer development, so pay monthly and keep Grammarly or QuillBot in mind as longer-term options.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Wordtune?
Wordtune is the sentence-level writing assistant from Israeli AI company AI21 Labs, and this wordtune rewrite and spices features review is written for people who want to know one thing before paying: does it still earn a subscription in late 2026? The short answer is "maybe, for a narrow job". The tool is still live, the extension still installs, and the plans start at $4.89 a month on annual billing. The catch is the owner. AI21 now sells enterprise AI, and CTech (Calcalist) reported in April 2026 that the company had discontinued development of Wordtune, later dating that decision to April 2025. AI21 has not announced a sale: its 2026 talks with Nebius ended in a licensing and partnership deal, according to CTech. Keep that in mind as you read.
What Wordtune is and who it suits
Wordtune launched in October 2020. You select a sentence, and it offers several alternative versions of the same idea. That is the core. Around it sit tone switching, length controls, a summarizer, a grammar check, translation into English and a "humanize AI" option, according to the official homepage. The homepage claims more than 10 million users and 782 million rewrite suggestions chosen.
It suits non-native English writers who already know what they want to say and need cleaner phrasing. Think of a Pune-based founder polishing investor emails, a marketer rewording LinkedIn posts, or a student tightening an SOP. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs long-form content generation, SEO briefs or support for writing in Hindi or other Indian languages. Writing help is English only.
Rewrite suggestions, tone and length in practice
The rewrite panel is still the reason to use Wordtune. Highlight a line and you get a handful of rewrite suggestions that keep your meaning but change the structure, word choice or rhythm. You pick one, edit it, or ask for more.
Two controls sit on top of that:
- Casual and formal tone: one click shifts a sentence between a relaxed and a professional register. Handy for turning a WhatsApp-style draft into a client email.
- Shorten and expand: trims a wordy sentence or lengthens a thin one. The homepage pitches this for hitting word counts, which says a lot about the audience.
The suggestions are good at the sentence level. They are weaker across a full paragraph, because each rewrite does not know much about what came three lines earlier. You still need to read the result as a whole.
Wordtune Spices: how to use them
Spices launched in January 2023 as a set of prompts that add new content rather than reword old content. Third-party reviews from January 2026 list options such as giving an example, adding a counterargument, inserting a statistical fact and writing a conclusion. The current homepage still shows prompts like "Elaborate on your answer", "Propose an alternate viewpoint" and "Explain in further detail", but the word "Spices" no longer appears as visible text on the homepage or the pricing page, so treat it as a feature that exists inside the editor rather than one Wordtune actively sells.
To use them, open the Wordtune editor (reviews say Spices are mostly available there and in Google Docs), place your cursor after a sentence, open the Spices menu and choose the type of addition you want. Wordtune drafts a line, which you accept, regenerate or delete. One firm rule: check every "statistical fact" it inserts. A generated number with no source is a liability in a client deck or college essay.
Summarizer and Wordtune Read
Wordtune Read began as a separate product for summarising long documents. Today the homepage folds summarisation into the main service and says it handles text, web pages, documents, articles and YouTube videos. The catch is the quota. The free plan allows 3 AI summarizations a month, and Advanced gives 15. Only Unlimited removes the cap.
Wordtune free limits
According to the pricing page, the free Basic plan includes 10 rewrites and AI suggestions per day, 3 summaries per month, and unlimited spelling corrections and grammar checks. Ten rewrites go quickly. If you rework one email properly, you can use half the day's quota on it. The free tier is fine for testing the feel of the tool and for basic grammar check use, but it is not a working plan for daily writers.
Wordtune premium price and plans
Wordtune does not use the word "Premium" for any plan now. The paid tiers are Advanced and Unlimited, and both offer a 3-day free trial. All prices are shown in US dollars; we found no official INR price.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (per month) | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $0 | $0 | 10 rewrites/AI suggestions a day, 3 summaries a month |
| Advanced | $6.99 | $4.89 | 30 rewrites a day, 15 summaries a month |
| Unlimited | $9.99 | $6.99 | No caps on rewrites or summaries, plus vocabulary, clarity and fluency suggestions and premium support |
Ignore the discount badge on the billing toggle and compare the listed prices: Advanced is $6.99 monthly or $4.89 a month billed annually, and Unlimited is $9.99 or $6.99. Students and educators with a .edu address, plus staff at academic institutions and non-profits, can contact support for 30% off monthly or annual plans. There is no self-serve team plan with pricing; SAML SSO and centralised billing appear in the comparison table but are not ticked for any of the three plans.
For Indian buyers, $6.99 a month on annual billing is cheap by SaaS standards, but your card will be charged in dollars, so expect your bank's forex markup on top.
Can you use it from India? Yes. The web editor and browser extensions are not region-locked as far as the official pages show, and the translation feature accepts Hindi input and returns English. What you will not get is an INR price or Indian-language writing help. Agencies handling Hinglish social copy will find the English-only output limiting, while founders writing to US or UK clients will get the most out of it. If you plan to use it for client accounts, keep one login per writer, since the standard plans have no shared workspace.
Chrome extension, Edge and mobile
The Chrome Web Store listing (version 9.20.0, last updated 19 April 2026) shows about 1 million users and a 3.3 out of 5 rating from roughly 2,400 ratings. That is lower than the 4.7 Chrome rating quoted on Wordtune's own homepage, so trust the store. The extension works inside most web text boxes, including email and social sites. Wordtune also lists an Edge extension and an iOS app called "Wordtune: AI Writing Keyboard", rated 4.4 from 989 ratings on the US App Store. Its in-app subscriptions are priced differently from the website ($24.99 a month or $119.99 a year on the US listing), so compare before subscribing on an iPhone. We could not confirm a current official Android app or Google Docs add-on listing, and a Microsoft Word add-in is mentioned by third-party reviews but not on the homepage.
If the extension stops working, the usual fixes apply: confirm you are signed in, check that the site is not disabled in the extension's settings, update Chrome, then remove and reinstall the extension. Some web editors with custom text fields block third-party extensions. With development reported as halted, expect compatibility gaps to grow over time, not shrink.
Wordtune vs Grammarly and QuillBot
Grammarly is the obvious rival. Its free plan covers grammar and gives 100 AI prompts a month, and Pro is listed at $12 on the official plans page with full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, plagiarism and AI-text detection, and 2,000 AI prompts per member per month. Grammarly is the better pick for error correction, team style guides and active product development. Wordtune is cheaper and its sentence alternatives feel more varied.
QuillBot is the closer match for rewriting. Its Premium plan costs $8.33 a month billed annually, according to QuillBot's pricing page, with eight paraphrasing modes, a plagiarism checker, an AI detector and support for many languages. Its free plan paraphrases 100 words at a time in two modes. For students who need citations and plagiarism checks, QuillBot wins. For someone who only wants polished English sentences in Gmail, Wordtune Advanced is the lower bill.
| Tool | Cheapest paid plan | Free plan | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wordtune | $4.89/mo (Advanced, annual) | 10 rewrites a day | Sentence alternatives, tone shifts |
| QuillBot | $8.33/mo (annual) | 100-word paraphrases, 2 modes | Paraphrasing modes, plagiarism, citations |
| Grammarly | $12 (Pro) | Grammar plus 100 AI prompts a month | Correctness, teams, style guides |
Is the wordtune rewrite and spices features review verdict worth acting on?
Yes, with conditions. If you need a few cleaner sentences a day and the price matters, Advanced is a fair buy. If you want a tool that will keep improving through 2027, the report that development has stopped is a real reason to choose Grammarly or QuillBot instead. Pay monthly first rather than locking into a year.
Privacy, AI detectors and commercial use
The privacy policy (last updated 3 August 2025, entity AI21 Labs Ltd.) says submitted prompts, text and documents may be used to improve and develop AI21's products and for research. It offers an email opt-out from data aggregation (privacy@wordtune.com) but no dedicated model-training toggle. Do not paste confidential contracts or unreleased financials into it.
The Chrome listing claims Wordtune can reduce the likelihood of AI-detection flags. No rewriting tool can guarantee that, and detectors change often. If your college or client bans AI assistance, rewording AI text does not make it compliant. We found no clear official statement on commercial rights to output, so check the terms before using it for paid client work.
Limitations to weigh
- CTech reported that AI21 stopped developing Wordtune (it dates the halt to April 2025).
- English-only writing help; translation works only into English from 10 languages, Hindi included.
- Tight free and Advanced quotas on rewrites and summaries.
- Store rating of 3.3 suggests a mixed recent experience.
- No published team pricing or SSO on standard plans.

Wordtune FAQ
What is Wordtune used for?
Wordtune rewrites English sentences into alternative versions, shifts tone between casual and formal, and shortens or expands lines. It also summarises text, web pages, documents and YouTube videos and checks grammar and spelling. Most people use it for emails, social posts and essays.
How much does Wordtune premium cost?
Wordtune no longer sells a plan called Premium. Advanced costs $6.99 a month, or $4.89 a month billed annually, and Unlimited costs $9.99 a month, or $6.99 a month billed annually, according to the official pricing page. Both come with a 3-day free trial.
Is Wordtune free to use?
Yes, the Basic plan is free. It allows 10 rewrites and AI suggestions per day, 3 AI summaries per month, and unlimited spelling and grammar checks. Heavier use needs Advanced or Unlimited.
How do I use Spices in Wordtune?
Open the Wordtune editor, put your cursor after a sentence and pick a Spices prompt, such as adding an example, a counterargument or an explanation. Wordtune drafts a line you can accept, regenerate or delete. The Spices name is no longer on the pricing page, but reviews from 2026 and the homepage still show these prompts.
Does Wordtune bypass AI detectors?
The Chrome Web Store listing claims it can reduce the likelihood of AI-detection flags, but no tool can guarantee that. Detectors change often and results vary. If your institution or client bans AI-written text, rewording it does not make it compliant.
Wordtune vs QuillBot: which is better?
QuillBot is better for students and researchers because it adds paraphrasing modes, a plagiarism checker, an AI detector and citations, with Premium at $8.33 a month billed annually. Wordtune is cheaper at $4.89 a month on annual Advanced and is good for quick sentence alternatives in the browser. QuillBot is also still under active development.
Can I use Wordtune in India?
Yes, the web editor and extensions work from India, and the translation feature accepts Hindi input and outputs English. Prices are in US dollars only, with no official INR price, so card payments may attract a forex markup. Writing help is English only.
What are the best Wordtune alternatives?
Grammarly is the main alternative for grammar, tone and team style guides, with Pro listed at $12. QuillBot suits paraphrasing, plagiarism checks and citations. Both are actively developed, while CTech has reported that AI21 stopped developing Wordtune.
How do I fix the Wordtune extension when it is not working?
Check that you are signed in, make sure the site is not disabled in the extension settings, and update Chrome. If that fails, remove and reinstall the extension from the Chrome Web Store. Some editors with custom text fields block extensions entirely.
Who is Wordtune best for?
Wordtune suits non-native English writers, founders and marketers who need a few polished sentences a day at a low price. It is less suited to teams, long-form content creators and anyone needing Indian-language support or a product with an active roadmap.
