Our verdict

4.1out of 5

QuillBot is the best value rewriting tool for students and non-native writers, particularly on annual billing and with India's lower rupee pricing. Start on the free plan, switch off input storage and training if you handle sensitive text, and choose Grammarly instead if live grammar checking matters more than paraphrasing.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is QuillBot?

QuillBot started in a college dorm in 2017, built by Anil Jason, Rohan Gupta and David Silin, and it is now a Learneo, Inc. business (Learneo was previously known as Course Hero). This QuillBot paraphrasing tool review and pricing guide looks at what you get for free, what Premium adds, how much it costs in India and the US, and where the product falls short. QuillBot's About page puts its audience at more than 35 million monthly active writers, most of them students, researchers and people writing in English as a second language.

What QuillBot is and who it suits

At its core QuillBot is a rewriting tool. You paste a sentence or a paragraph, pick a style, and it returns a reworded version. Around that paraphraser the company has built a grammar checker, an AI detector, an AI humanizer, a summarizer tool, a plagiarism checker, a translator, a citation generator and an AI chat. Newer additions on the site include an image generator, a presentation maker and a set of PDF utilities. Everything runs in the browser, and there are apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, plus a Chrome extension, Edge and Safari extensions and a Microsoft Word add-in.

It fits students who need to tighten essays, non-native writers who want clearer English, and marketers or support teams who rewrite the same message many times a day. It is a weaker fit for long-form content writers who want a full drafting assistant, or for agencies that need brand voice controls and shared style guides across many clients.

Key features in practice

The paraphraser is still the reason most people sign up. There are nine built-in paraphraser modes plus a Custom option. Free users get Standard and Fluency. Premium opens Formal, Simple, Creative, Academic, Expand, Shorten, Humanize and Custom, where you describe the tone you want in a few words. Fluency mode is the one to use when you only want grammar and flow fixed without changing the meaning much. The synonym slider decides how aggressive the rewrite is: slide it left and QuillBot changes fewer words, slide it right and it swaps more vocabulary.

The grammar checker is free for basic fixes. Premium adds advanced suggestions, tone insights and grammar support in six languages. Paraphrasing itself works in 23 languages on Premium, according to the pricing page. The summarizer tool condenses up to 1,200 words on the free plan and 6,000 words on Premium, with an option for custom summaries.

The citation generator is fully free with no usage cap. It covers more than 1,000 citation styles, including APA, MLA and Chicago, and you only need an account if you want to save citations. For Indian college students writing project reports, this alone is a useful bookmark.

The plagiarism checker is Premium only. Subscribers get 25,000 words of scanning per month, and each scan uses up the full word count of the document. Extra words are sold as top-ups: 6,250 words for $2.45, 25,000 for $8.95 or 62,500 for $19.95. It accepts .docx, .pdf, .html and .txt files and checks text in more than 100 languages.

QuillBot AI detector accuracy: what the claims mean

QuillBot's AI detector gives a 0 to 100% likelihood score and highlights the sentences that look machine written. The product page claims a 99% detection rate, citing independent tests on the RAID benchmark. The same page also says no detector is 100% accurate, that heavily paraphrased text is harder to catch, and that formulaic human writing (legal, academic or template text) can score higher than it should. It also tells users not to make academic or hiring decisions on a score alone.

Treat the score as a signal, not proof. Scans need at least 80 words, and QuillBot says results are more reliable above 300 words. Free users can scan up to 1,200 words at a time, six times a day. Premium removes both limits.

QuillBot humanizer free: what you actually get

The AI humanizer rewrites stiff, machine-sounding text so it reads more naturally. On the free plan you can humanize up to 100 words at a time, with a usage cap and no saved history, and the page prompts you to create an account. Premium removes the word and usage caps and adds advanced humanizing, tone insights and a full history.

QuillBot is explicit that the humanizer is a readability aid and not a way to dodge AI detection. If your university or employer requires disclosure of AI use, the humanizer does not change that obligation.

QuillBot paraphrasing tool review and pricing: plans explained

There are three plans: Free, Premium and Team. The official pricing page (checked 17 October 2026) lists Premium at $8.33 per month when billed annually, which comes to roughly $100 a year. The web page does not print a monthly figure; QuillBot's help centre says monthly and shorter discounted terms exist and that the price depends on your region. The clearest official numbers for those terms are in QuillBot's own App Store listing, which in the US shows $19.99 for a month, $79.99 for six months and $99.99 for a year. Team pricing is quote-based, and teams of five or more get a single invoice at a discounted rate.

PlanPriceMain limits
Free$0 / ₹0Paraphrase 100 words in 2 modes, humanize 100 words, summaries up to 1,200 words, limited AI detector, no plagiarism checks
Premium (annual, web)$8.33/mo billed yearlyAll modes, full paraphraser access, 25,000 plagiarism words a month, full detector and humanizer, summaries up to 6,000 words, up to 10 devices
Premium (App Store, US)$19.99 monthly, $79.99 semi-annual, $99.99 annualSame Premium features, billed through Apple
Premium (App Store, India)₹799 monthly, ₹3,299 semi-annual, ₹3,999 annualSame Premium features, billed through Apple
TeamContact salesPremium plus user dashboard, central billing, data controls, priority support

Refunds are limited. The help centre says refunds are given only where the law requires it, except for a 14-day withdrawal right in the EEA and UK. You can cancel auto-renewal at any time and keep Premium until the paid period ends. Mobile subscriptions bought through Google Play or the App Store are refunded by Google or Apple, not QuillBot.

QuillBot Premium price in India

QuillBot uses regional pricing. Its help docs say prices adjust to your location and local currency at checkout, so the rupee rate on the web can differ from the dollar figure above. The only INR prices QuillBot publishes itself are on its Indian App Store listing: ₹799 for one month, ₹3,299 for six months and ₹3,999 for a year. That annual figure works out to about ₹333 a month, far below the US App Store rate. For web billing, open the Premium page from India and compare it with the app price before paying, since app store charges sometimes run higher than direct checkout. Annual billing also means one upfront charge instead of twelve card or UPI payments.

Free vs paid: where the word limit bites

The free plan is genuinely usable for short tasks. The catch is the word limit: 100 words per paraphrase is roughly one paragraph, so rewriting a 1,500-word assignment means 15 separate pastes using only two modes. The plagiarism checker is locked, the AI detector is capped at six scans a day, and the humanizer stops at 100 words. If you rewrite more than a page a week, Premium pays for itself in saved time.

QuillBot vs Grammarly

Grammarly is the obvious comparison. Its plans page lists Pro from $12 and says the free plan includes 100 AI prompts a month but no plagiarism detection or AI text detection. Grammarly is stronger as a live grammar and clarity checker across your whole computer, and its tone and style suggestions are more mature. QuillBot is stronger at rewriting: more paraphraser modes, a dedicated humanizer, a free citation generator and a cheaper annual plan, especially in India.

For students the choice usually comes down to the task. If you mostly write from scratch and want errors caught as you type, Grammarly's free tier goes further. If you need to reword sources, shorten drafts or build a bibliography, QuillBot offers more for less. Free alternatives worth a look include Grammarly's free plan, LanguageTool for multilingual grammar and Scribbr's free citation tools. Note that LanguageTool and Scribbr are, like QuillBot, Learneo brands.

Privacy, data and commercial use

QuillBot's November 2025 privacy update matters if you paste client or confidential text. For the browser extension (version 4.37.0 and later), storing your text inputs is now on by default, and anyone can switch that storage off. Account holders get a second, separate switch to stop their inputs being used to train QuillBot's AI models; both sit under Extension Settings, View All Settings, then Data and Privacy. People who had earlier given consent stay opted in to training until they change it. Team plan inputs are excluded from model training by default. QuillBot says it plans to store desktop app inputs in future too, with notice beforehand and the same controls.

The terms we could access do not spell out commercial-use rules for generated text, so agencies should read the full Terms of Service before using QuillBot output in client work. Rewording someone else's work without credit is still plagiarism, whatever tool you use.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • Rewrites can drift in meaning on technical or legal text, so check every changed sentence.
  • We could not find an official status page, and refunds outside the EEA and UK depend on local law.
  • Monthly billing is expensive compared with the annual plan.
  • The Android app's reviews mention slow corrections and login issues with Google and Facebook sign-in.
  • No open developer API is advertised for individual users.

How to get started

Create a free account at quillbot.com and test the paraphraser on a paragraph you have already written, trying both Standard and Fluency mode with the synonym slider in the middle. Install the Chrome extension so QuillBot appears inside Google Docs, Gmail, LinkedIn, Outlook and Notion, all listed as supported sites on the extension page. If you use Word, add the QuillBot add-in from inside Word. Before upgrading, check the rupee price on the Premium page, choose annual billing for the lowest cost, and if privacy matters, switch off model training in the extension's Data and Privacy settings on day one. Prices change from time to time, so treat the figures here as a guide and confirm at checkout.

QuillBot FAQ

Is QuillBot free to use?

Yes. QuillBot has a free plan that includes the paraphraser in Standard and Fluency modes, basic grammar fixes, summaries up to 1,200 words, a limited AI detector and an unlimited free citation generator. The plagiarism checker and the other paraphrasing modes need Premium.

How much is QuillBot Premium per month in India?

QuillBot prices Premium by region, and the web checkout shows the rupee rate for your location. Its Indian App Store listing charges ₹799 for one month, ₹3,299 for six months and ₹3,999 for a year, which is about ₹333 a month on the annual plan. Check the Premium page from India too, as direct web pricing can differ from the app.

How many words can QuillBot paraphrase for free?

According to QuillBot's pricing page, free users can paraphrase up to 100 words at a time in two modes, Standard and Fluency. Premium gives full paraphraser access with nine built-in modes and unlimited custom modes.

Does the QuillBot AI detector work?

It works as a probability check, not a final verdict. QuillBot cites a 99% detection rate from independent RAID benchmark evaluations, but also says no detector is fully accurate, heavily paraphrased text is harder to judge, and formulaic human writing can score high. Scans need at least 80 words and are more reliable above 300.

Is QuillBot considered plagiarism?

Using QuillBot is not plagiarism by itself, but rewording someone else's ideas without citing them still is. Many universities also have rules on AI-assisted rewriting, so check your institution's policy and cite your sources. QuillBot's free citation generator helps with the citing part.

QuillBot vs Grammarly: which is better for students?

QuillBot is better for rewording, summarising and creating citations, and its annual plan is cheaper, especially in India. Grammarly is better for catching errors as you type and for tone suggestions. Many students use Grammarly's free plan for checking and QuillBot for rewriting.

Can teachers detect QuillBot?

Sometimes. AI detectors and plagiarism tools can flag text that was AI-written and then paraphrased, though heavy paraphrasing lowers detection rates. Teachers may also notice changes in style or meaning, so QuillBot should be used to improve your own writing, not to disguise copied or AI-generated work.

How do I use QuillBot in Google Docs?

Install the QuillBot Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store and sign in. QuillBot lists Google Docs among the sites the extension supports, so you can select text in a document and paraphrase it or fix grammar without leaving the page.

What are the best free QuillBot alternatives?

Grammarly's free plan is the closest option for grammar checking and includes 100 AI prompts a month. LanguageTool is useful for multilingual grammar and Scribbr offers free citation tools, though both belong to Learneo, QuillBot's parent company. None of them matches QuillBot's range of paraphrasing modes on a free plan.

Is QuillBot safe and private?

QuillBot is a legitimate product owned by Learneo, Inc. Since its November 2025 privacy update, the browser extension stores text inputs by default; anyone can turn storage off, and account holders can also opt out of model training under Data and Privacy settings. Team plan inputs are excluded from training by default, so avoid pasting confidential text on a personal account.
