Our verdict

3.6out of 5

Tabnine is the AI code assistant to pick when source code must stay inside your own network, thanks to on-prem and air-gapped installs and a strict no-retain policy. For everyone else, the reported $39 annual-only entry seat and missing free tier make GitHub Copilot the better value.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Tabnine?

The cheapest Tabnine seat is reported at $39 per user per month, billed for a full year, and there is no free tier underneath it. That one fact changes how any tabnine ai code assistant review and pricing comparison should be read, because older articles still describe a free Basic plan and a cheap Dev seat for individuals. This page sets out what you actually buy today, who it is built for, and the cases where GitHub Copilot or Cursor make more sense for an Indian team watching its tooling budget.

Some context first. Tabnine is a privacy-first AI coding assistant that plugs into the editor you already use and connects to your repositories, Jira and other dev systems. On 30 July 2026, the software testing company Tricentis announced it had acquired Tabnine and would fold Tabnine's Enterprise Context Engine into its own quality engineering platform. The product, docs and plugins are still live in October 2026, but anyone signing a multi-year deal should ask for the roadmap in writing.

Tabnine free plan discontinued: what that means for solo developers

Tabnine's subscription docs now list only two kinds of plan: Enterprise (SaaS) and Enterprise (private installation). That page mentions no free tier, individual seat or trial. So yes, the free plan is gone. We could not find an official date for when the old Basic tier closed, and third-party sites disagree with each other, so we are not printing one.

The VS Code Marketplace still labels the extension "Free", which confuses people. Downloading it costs nothing, but it needs a paid Tabnine account to do anything useful, and the listing itself says Tabnine does not onboard new users to that plugin, pointing enterprise buyers to a separate self-hosted updater extension or to Tabnine's enterprise sales address. Freelancers and students who want a no-cost assistant should try GitHub Copilot Free instead, which allows 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests a month.

Tabnine pricing, Pro vs Enterprise, and the two plans that replaced them

Plenty of people still search for Tabnine Pro against Tabnine Enterprise. That split is gone. Tabnine's pricing page did not render any figures when we checked it on 21 October 2026, and we found no other official page that states a seat price. Two independent pricing trackers, Layer3Labs (updated 10 October 2026) and CostBench (updated 1 September 2026), both report two seats at the prices below, and Layer3Labs says billing is annual only. Treat these as reported figures and confirm them with Tabnine before you budget:

PlanReported price per userApprox. INRWhat it adds
Code Assistant Platform$39/mo, billed yearly (reported)≈₹3,693/mo (≈₹44,320/yr), approx.Completions and chat in supported IDEs, with SaaS or private hosting
Agentic Platform$59/mo, billed yearly (reported)≈₹5,587/mo (≈₹67,048/yr), approx.Reportedly adds agents, the Tabnine CLI and the Context Engine

Rupee figures are our own conversions at roughly ₹94.7 per US dollar, before GST and any card forex markup. Tabnine does not publish an Indian price, and we could not confirm how GST is charged. Plan contents above also come from the trackers, so ask sales for the current feature split. Private installations also carry your own hosting cost: a Kubernetes cluster sized to Tabnine's system requirements. Treat the seat price as the floor of the bill, not the whole of it.

Tabnine on premises private deployment, from VPC to air-gapped racks

This is the reason most companies shortlist Tabnine at all. The deployment docs describe three setups. In SaaS, Tabnine hosts, monitors and updates everything. In a VPC install, the Tabnine cluster runs as a Kubernetes unit inside your own AWS, Google Cloud or Azure account, and the docs state that Tabnine has no access to that environment. On-premises puts the same cluster on servers in your own data centre.

Private installations can also run fully air-gapped, with no outbound connection at all. That matters for banks, defence suppliers, telecom vendors and government IT contractors in India who cannot send source code to a foreign cloud, even for a second. Few rivals match it. Copilot and Cursor are cloud services, and Windsurf (now sold as Devin Desktop) offers VPC deployment only on a custom Enterprise contract.

Inside a private setup, customers can reach extra models through private endpoints, and Tabnine can build private fine-tuned models from your own code. The privacy page says these personalized models are stored on your private setup and only your team members can use them.

What a Tabnine seat does inside VS Code and IntelliJ

The IDE plugin covers Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm and PhpStorm, Visual Studio 2022 and 2026, and Eclipse. Eclipse support is rarer than you might expect, and some Java shops pick Tabnine for that reason alone.

  • Inline code completion runs on Tabnine's own proprietary models, with a "Tabnine Protected" model for teams with strict licence rules.
  • Chat with a model menu. The models page lists Claude 4.8 Opus, GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.5 Pro, Devstral-2-123B-Instruct-2512, Qwen-3-Coder-480B-A35B-Instruct, GLM-4.7 and MiniMax-M2.7 among others, and admins decide which ones developers can pick.
  • Jira integration with two agents. One writes code for an issue assigned to you; the other reviews your implementation against that issue's requirements. It reads the title and description, not comments, history or images, works with Jira Cloud and Data Center 8.20+, and an admin has to switch it on.
  • Tabnine CLI for agent work in the terminal and in CI. The docs include a code review example and setup guides for GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Bitbucket Pipelines, so an automated review can run before a human reviewer opens the pull request.
  • Context Engine, reportedly tied to the Agentic plan, which links repositories and tools so answers reflect your codebase instead of generic samples.

There is no standalone editor like Cursor and no mobile app. Tabnine lives inside the IDE your team already has open all day.

Tabnine vs GitHub Copilot for a 20-developer Indian team

Picture a 20-person product team in Pune. On Copilot Business at $19 per seat, the yearly bill is $4,560 (about ₹4.32 lakh, approx.), with 1,900 AI credits per user each month and no training on company data. Tabnine's Code Assistant Platform at the reported $39 per seat comes to $9,360 a year (about ₹8.86 lakh, approx.). Move to the Agentic Platform and it rises to $14,160 (about ₹13.41 lakh, approx.).

So which is better? If your code already sits on GitHub and a cloud service is acceptable, Copilot gives more for less money, plus a free tier for trials and a wider set of agents. Tabnine wins in three situations: code that must never leave your network, a client contract that forbids third-party retention, or an IDE mix that includes Eclipse. Cursor's Teams seats start at $30 per user, but everyone has to move into Cursor's own editor, which is a hard sell to a room full of JetBrains users.

Where Tabnine's no-train, no-retain rule actually helps

The privacy documentation is direct on the main points. Code sent as context is deleted as soon as the server returns an answer, nothing is kept or shared with third parties, and the no-train, no-retain rule applies whichever model you choose. In practice that is zero data retention for your source. Tabnine's general models are trained only on permissively licensed open-source code, which lowers the chance of a suggestion lifted from a GPL project.

The security page lists SOC 2 and GDPR compliance, TLS 1.2 in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest. In self-hosted setups, telemetry still flows to Tabnine, but the docs say it carries no code or personal data and logs are kept for a week. We could not find indemnity or commercial-use terms on public pages, so get them from sales before you sign.

Does Tabnine work offline, and why do suggestions vanish?

On SaaS, no. The plugin has to reach Tabnine's hosted servers for completions and chat. The only offline-style option is a private installation on your own network, including a fully air-gapped one, where laptops never touch the public internet but still need a link to the in-house cluster.

When suggestions stop showing, work through this list:

  • Look at the status bar. The docs say a healthy install shows "Tabnine" or "Tabnine Enterprise" there (in Visual Studio, check the Tabnine Hub instead).
  • Confirm you are signed in and have accepted your team invite, since an unassigned user gets nothing.
  • On private installs, check that the plugin points at your company's server URL, not the public SaaS.
  • Ask your admin whether the model or feature you expect is enabled for your team.
  • Disable other completion extensions, Copilot included, that compete for the same inline slot.

Tabnine AI code assistant review and pricing: who should sign the contract

Tabnine suits regulated enterprises, IT services firms bound by client NDAs, and engineering heads who need on-prem or air-gapped AI with admin control over models. Completion quality is solid, the model list is long, and the Jira agents are a practical touch for teams that run sprints in Atlassian tools.

It is hard to recommend for freelancers, students, early-stage startups or small agencies. No free tier, reportedly no monthly billing, and an entry seat at roughly twice the price of Copilot Business add up quickly. The Tricentis deal adds some roadmap uncertainty too. If privacy is not a hard requirement, the best Tabnine alternatives are GitHub Copilot for value and Cursor for an AI-first editor. Windsurf's Teams plan, now under the Devin Desktop name, charges $40 per full seat with an $80 monthly minimum.

First week with Tabnine: install, activate, check the status bar

There is no card checkout. The Marketplace listing sends prospective enterprise customers to Tabnine's sales team, so the process begins with a conversation rather than a payment form. Once your organisation has seats:

  • Accept the email or link invitation from your admin, or verify your work email.
  • Install the plugin build your admin specifies, since the main VS Code listing no longer onboards new users and enterprise setups have their own client instructions.
  • Sign in, then confirm the status bar reads Tabnine or Tabnine Enterprise.
  • On the Agentic Platform, connect Jira and your repositories and pick a default chat model.
  • Run the CLI against one small pull request to judge whether its review comments deserve a place in CI.

A two-week pilot with five developers on real tickets will tell you more than any demo. Buy seats for the whole floor only after that.

Tabnine FAQ

What is Tabnine?

Tabnine is an AI coding assistant that adds code completion, chat and agents to VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio and Eclipse. It is built for companies that want private AI, with SaaS, VPC, on-premises and air-gapped hosting. Tricentis announced its acquisition of Tabnine in July 2026.

How much does Tabnine cost per month?

Tabnine's own pages did not show seat prices when we checked. Independent trackers updated in September and October 2026 report the Code Assistant Platform at $39 and the Agentic Platform at $59 per user per month, billed annually, so confirm with Tabnine before budgeting. That works out to about ₹3,693 and ₹5,587 a month per user (approx., before GST).

Is Tabnine free?

No. Tabnine's docs list only Enterprise (SaaS) and Enterprise (private installation) plans, and the old free Basic and Dev tiers are no longer offered. The VS Code extension is free to download but needs a paid account to work.

How do I install Tabnine in VS Code?

Accept your team invitation or verify your work email, then install the Tabnine build your admin specifies, because the main VS Code Marketplace listing says it no longer onboards new users. Sign in and check that the status bar shows Tabnine or Tabnine Enterprise. Private-installation users also need their company's server URL.

Is Tabnine safe for private code?

Tabnine's privacy docs say code sent as context is deleted right after the answer is returned and is never retained or shared with third parties. Its general models are trained only on permissively licensed open-source code, and it lists SOC 2 and GDPR compliance. For the strictest needs you can run it in your own VPC, on-premises or fully air-gapped.

Tabnine vs Copilot: which is better?

For most cloud-friendly teams, GitHub Copilot is better value: it has a free tier and Business seats cost $19 a month against Tabnine's reported $39 entry seat. Tabnine is the better pick when code cannot leave your network, when a client contract bans retention, or when your team uses Eclipse.

Does Tabnine work offline?

The SaaS version needs an internet connection to Tabnine's servers. Offline-style use is only possible with a private installation on your own network, including a fully air-gapped setup, and the IDE still needs to reach that in-house cluster.

What are the best Tabnine alternatives?

GitHub Copilot is the main alternative for value, with a free plan and $19 Business seats. Cursor suits teams happy to switch to an AI-first editor, with Teams seats from $30. Windsurf, now called Devin Desktop, charges $40 per full Teams seat with an $80 monthly minimum.

Why is Tabnine not showing suggestions?

First check the status bar for Tabnine or Tabnine Enterprise, and make sure you are signed in with an accepted team invite. On private installs, confirm the plugin points at your company server. Then ask your admin whether the feature is enabled, and turn off other completion extensions that may clash.

Who is Tabnine best for?

Tabnine fits regulated enterprises, IT services firms working under client NDAs, and engineering teams that need on-prem or air-gapped AI with admin control over models. It is a poor value choice for freelancers, students and small startups because there is no free plan and billing is reportedly annual only.
