Our verdict

4.4out of 5

GitHub Copilot is the safest default AI coding assistant for developers already on GitHub, and Pro at $10 a month is strong value. Heavy agent users should watch the new credit-based billing closely, and Indian buyers should budget for USD charges and forex fees.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is GitHub Copilot?

GitHub Copilot is the AI coding assistant built into GitHub and the editors most developers already use. It writes code as you type, answers questions about your repository, edits several files at once and can now pick up an issue and open a pull request on its own. For Indian buyers the big question is cost, so this review explains the github copilot pro price in india, what the free tier really gives you, and where the plan limits start to bite after GitHub's switch to usage-based billing in June 2026.

What GitHub Copilot is and how it works

Copilot is made by GitHub, the Microsoft-owned code hosting company founded in 2008 and based in San Francisco. You install an extension in your editor, sign in with a GitHub account, and the tool sends the code around your cursor plus your prompt to a hosted language model. The reply comes back as grey ghost text, a chat answer or a set of proposed file edits.

There are four ways you meet it day to day. Inline code completion suggests the next line or block. Copilot Chat sits in a side panel and explains, refactors or writes tests. Agent mode plans a multi-step change inside your editor, runs terminal commands and fixes its own errors. The cloud agent works in the background on GitHub itself and hands you a pull request to review.

It suits solo developers, students, agency teams that live on GitHub, and companies that need admin controls. It is less suited to people who want a full AI-first editor with its own interface, which is where Cursor comes in.

Key features in practice

  • Copilot in VS Code is the most complete experience, with completions, chat, agent mode and next edit suggestions.
  • The official JetBrains plugin covers IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm and the rest of that family. Visual Studio, Xcode, Eclipse, Neovim, Vim, Azure Data Studio and Raycast are also listed on the features page.
  • Multi-model selection lets paid users switch between models from Anthropic (Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5), OpenAI (GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-5.5 and the Codex models), Google (Gemini 3.8 Flash), xAI (Grok 4.7), Microsoft (MAI-Code-1.1-Flash) and Kimi.
  • Pull request summaries and Copilot code review run on github.com, so reviewers get a written overview and line comments before a human looks.
  • Copilot CLI brings the assistant into the terminal, and there are also GitHub Mobile and desktop app options.

One caution on chat. GitHub's features page says inline suggestions work across all supported editors, but chat is available only in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and Visual Studio. Vim or Xcode users get a thinner product.

How GitHub Copilot agent mode and the cloud agent differ

Agent mode runs locally. You describe a task such as "add pagination to the orders API and update the tests", and Copilot reads the relevant files, edits them, runs the test command and loops until things pass or it needs your input. You watch every step and approve terminal commands. It is included even on the free plan.

The Copilot coding agent, now called the cloud agent in GitHub's docs, is different. You assign it a task from GitHub, it researches the repository, makes changes in its own environment and opens a pull request for review. You can track several agents at once. On Pro+ and Max you can also hand tasks to third-party agents such as Claude and OpenAI Codex (a preview feature). If you remember Copilot Workspace, the older GitHub Next experiment, it no longer appears on the plan pages; the cloud agent now covers that "issue to pull request" idea.

To use agent mode in VS Code, open the Chat view, switch the mode dropdown from Ask to Agent, pick a model and type the task. Keep tasks small and specific. Vague requests burn credits and produce sprawling diffs.

Plans and prices (October 2026)

Since 1 June 2026, Copilot bills chat and agent work in GitHub AI Credits, where one credit equals $0.01. Each paid plan includes a base allotment plus a "flex" allotment. Completions and next edit suggestions are not billed in credits and stay unlimited on paid plans.

PlanPrice (USD)Monthly AI CreditsMain extras
Free$0Small allowance2,000 completions, 50 chat requests, auto model only
Student$0 (verified)AllowanceUnlimited completions, auto model only
Pro$10/month1,500 (1,000 + 500 flex)Cloud agent, code review, model choice
Pro+$39/month7,000 (3,900 + 3,100 flex)Third-party agents (preview)
Max$100/month20,000 (10,000 + 10,000 flex)Priority access to new models and features
Business$19/seat/month1,900 per userAdmin policies, no training on data
Enterprise$39/seat/month3,900 per userPriority access to new models, enterprise controls

For organisations, usage beyond the pooled allowance costs $0.01 per credit. How many credits a single chat or agent run uses depends on the model and the size of the task, so heavy agent users should set a spending limit in billing settings on day one.

GitHub Copilot Pro price in India

GitHub does not publish a rupee price. Indian developers pay the same $10 a month for Pro, charged in dollars to an international-enabled card. For a rough idea, the mid-market rate on 15 October 2026 was close to ₹94.7 per dollar, so Pro comes to approximately ₹950 a month and Pro+ to approximately ₹3,700, before your bank adds its forex markup. These rupee figures are approximate and move with the exchange rate. A five-seat team on Copilot Business pays $95 a month.

GST is the grey area. None of the official GitHub billing pages we checked state how Indian GST is applied to Copilot, so businesses that need input tax credit should look at the actual invoice before committing a whole team. Payment itself got easier in August 2026, when GitHub added RBI-compliant e-mandates so eligible Indian credit cards can be charged automatically each cycle. If a recurring charge is declined, the billing docs allow a one-time payment, and paid features lock after a 14-day grace period. PayPal is not accepted for those one-time payments, and UPI is not listed.

GitHub Copilot free plan limits

The free tier needs no credit card. The plans page caps you at 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests a month, and you only get auto model selection, so you cannot pick a specific model yourself. Agent mode and the CLI are included. The cloud agent that opens pull requests and Copilot code review are not.

In practice, 2,000 completions lasts a part-time coder a few weeks. A full-time developer can use that up in about a week of steady work, and 50 chats go quickly once you start asking for refactors. Treat the free plan as an extended trial, not a long-term home.

Is GitHub Copilot free for students and teachers?

Yes. Verified students get the separate Copilot Student plan at no cost, with unlimited completions and a credit allowance limited to auto model selection; third-party agents are excluded. GitHub's plan docs say verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects can get Copilot Pro free. Verification runs through GitHub Education, which needs a college email or ID proof and usually takes a few days.

GitHub Copilot vs Cursor

Cursor is a standalone editor built on a fork of VS Code, with AI wired into every panel. Copilot is an add-on that works across many editors and plugs into GitHub's issues, pull requests and Actions.

Mid tierPro+, $39/monthPremium, $30/month

Pick Copilot if you use JetBrains or Visual Studio, if your team already pays for GitHub, or if you want the cloud agent working on issues. Pick Cursor if you live in one editor and want its tighter multi-file editing interface. Against ChatGPT for coding, Copilot wins on context: it sees your open files and repository without copy-pasting, while ChatGPT is better for general explanations and planning away from the editor. Other alternatives worth testing are Claude Code, Windsurf, Gemini Code Assist and Amazon Q Developer.

Privacy, private code and commercial use

GitHub's features page is clear on training. For Copilot Business and Enterprise, GitHub says it does not use their data to train its models. On individual plans (Free, Pro, Pro+), prompts, suggestions and code snippets may be used for training unless you opt out at github.com/settings/copilot/features, and opting out does not remove any features. If you work on client code under an NDA, either turn that setting off on day one or put the team on Business. Business and Enterprise admins also get content exclusion, policy controls and audit logs. Code you write with Copilot can be used commercially; the responsibility for licence checks and security review stays with you.

Limitations to know before paying

  • Credit use is hard to predict. In a June 2026 Inc42 report, the CTO of one Indian startup said its monthly allocation ran out within a week under the new billing.
  • No rupee pricing, no UPI and unclear GST handling on GitHub's pages.
  • Chat is missing in several supported editors.
  • Suggestions still need review. Generated code can be outdated, insecure or simply wrong.

Why Copilot is not suggesting code

Most "no suggestions" cases have simple causes. Check that you are signed in to the right GitHub account in the editor, that the free plan's 2,000 completions have not run out, and that completions are not disabled for that file type in settings. Organisation policies on Business plans can also switch features off, and content exclusion silently blocks suggestions in excluded paths. GitHub's status page at githubstatus.com lists Copilot as its own component, so check it during outages.

How to get started

  • Sign in to GitHub and activate Copilot Free from your account settings, or apply for the Student plan first if you are eligible.
  • In VS Code, install the GitHub Copilot Chat extension (it has over 78 million installs on the Marketplace), sign in, and accept the first suggestion with Tab.
  • Turn off training on your data under Copilot settings if you work on private code.
  • After two weeks, check your usage page. If you hit the free caps often, move to Pro and set a monthly spending limit.

For most Indian developers, $10 a month for Pro is fair value: unlimited completions, model choice and a cloud agent cost less than one team lunch. The pricing change makes heavy agent use harder to budget, so watch the dashboard closely for the first month.

GitHub Copilot FAQ

What is GitHub Copilot and how does it work?

GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant from GitHub that runs inside editors such as VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and Visual Studio. It sends your code context and prompt to hosted models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others, then returns completions, chat answers or multi-file edits. Paid plans also include a cloud agent that can work on a task and open a pull request.

How much is GitHub Copilot per month in India?

GitHub charges Indian users in US dollars: Pro is $10 a month, Pro+ $39, Max $100, Business $19 per seat and Enterprise $39 per seat. There is no official rupee price, so the final amount depends on the exchange rate and your bank's forex markup. GitHub's billing pages do not spell out GST treatment, so businesses should check the invoice.

Is GitHub Copilot free for students?

Yes. Verified students get the Copilot Student plan at no cost, with unlimited code completions and an AI credit allowance using auto model selection. Verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects can get Copilot Pro free.

How do I enable GitHub Copilot in VS Code?

Install the GitHub Copilot Chat extension from the VS Code Marketplace and sign in with your GitHub account. If you have no plan yet, activate Copilot Free from your GitHub settings. Suggestions then appear as grey text that you accept with Tab, and chat opens from the Copilot icon.

Is GitHub Copilot safe for private code?

GitHub says it does not use Copilot Business or Enterprise data to train its models. On Free, Pro and Pro+ plans, prompts and code snippets may be used for training unless you opt out in your Copilot settings. For client or NDA work, opt out or use Business, which also adds content exclusion and admin policies.

GitHub Copilot vs Cursor: which is better?

Copilot is better if you use JetBrains, Visual Studio or several editors, or if your team works heavily in GitHub issues and pull requests. Cursor suits developers who want one AI-first editor with tight multi-file editing. Copilot Pro costs $10 a month, while Cursor's paid plans start at $8 and its Premium tier is $30.

GitHub Copilot vs ChatGPT for coding: which should I use?

Copilot works inside your editor and repository, so it sees your files and can edit them directly. ChatGPT is a general assistant that needs code pasted in, though it is useful for explanations and planning. Many developers use Copilot for daily coding and a chat assistant for broader questions.

How do I use Copilot agent mode?

Open the Chat view in VS Code, change the mode from Ask to Agent, choose a model and describe the task. Copilot plans the change, edits files, runs terminal commands with your approval and iterates until the task is done. Agent mode is available on every plan, including Free.

What are the best GitHub Copilot alternatives?

The main alternatives are Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf, Gemini Code Assist and Amazon Q Developer. Cursor is the closest rival as an AI-first editor, while Claude Code focuses on agentic work in the terminal. Choose based on your editor, budget and how much agent work you do.

Why is GitHub Copilot not suggesting code?

Common causes are being signed out or signed in to the wrong account, hitting the free plan's 2,000 monthly completions, or completions being disabled for that language. On organisation plans, admin policies or content exclusion can block suggestions. Also check githubstatus.com for a Copilot outage.
