Our verdict

4.0out of 5

SurveyMonkey is worth paying for if surveys are a regular part of your work and you need analysis rather than just a form. Indian buyers pay in rupees at well below US rates on annual plans, from about ₹1,999 a month on Advantage, but the free plan is only good for testing a questionnaire.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is SurveyMonkey?

An Indian buyer who opens SurveyMonkey's pricing page sees dollars, yet the company bills Indian cards in rupees from a separate price list, and the annual rupee rates sit well below the US ones: Advantage costs ₹23,988 a year in India against $468 in the US. That gap is the first thing to understand before reading surveymonkey pricing plans and free plan limits, because a US-focused review quotes dollar prices that an Indian account never pays. The second thing is the free Basic plan, which is useful for testing a questionnaire and not much else.

SurveyMonkey has been around since 1999 and is run from San Mateo, California. Its listed parent renamed itself Momentive Global in June 2021, was taken private in 2023 by an investor group led by Symphony Technology Group (STG) in a deal valued at about $1.5 billion, and announced a return to the SurveyMonkey name in June 2023, shortly after the deal closed. The product is aimed at people who run surveys as part of their job: HR teams doing engagement pulses, product managers collecting NPS survey scores, agencies doing client research, and academics who need SPSS files.

SurveyMonkey pricing plans and free plan limits in one table

The rupee figures below come from SurveyMonkey's own published price list (its pricing.md file, last updated 22 September 2026), which carries a country-by-country table. The USD figures are from the US individual and team pricing pages. Annual plans are charged upfront for the year; the per-month rupee number is simply the yearly price divided by twelve.

PlanIndia (INR)US (USD)Responses included
BasicFreeFree10 questions per survey, small per-survey response cap
Standard MonthlyCheck at checkout$149/month1,000 per month, 1 user
Advantage Annual₹23,988/year (about ₹1,999/mo)$468/year ($39/mo)15,000 per year, 1 user
Premier Annual₹59,988/year (about ₹4,999/mo)$1,668/year ($139/mo)40,000 per year, 1 user
Team Advantage₹18,600 per user/year$30 per user/month, billed yearly50,000 per year, minimum 3 users
Team Premier₹45,600 per user/year$92 per user/month, billed yearly100,000 per year, minimum 3 users
EnterpriseQuoteQuoteCustom, 5+ users

The price list does carry a rupee figure for Standard Monthly, but it is badly out of line with how that plan is priced against Advantage in every other country, so this page does not quote it. Check the amount at checkout before you buy.

Going past your response allowance on a paid plan is charged per extra response: $0.15 in USD, and the price list gives ₹5 per response for rupee billing on annual plans. The help centre says the rate depends on the currency you pay in, and that deleted responses still count toward overage. US buyers also get a Standard Annual plan at $300 a year, which the price list marks as available only in the US, UK and Australia, so it does not appear for Indian accounts.

The SurveyMonkey free plan: 10 questions, a tiny response window, 3 collectors

Basic gives you one user, unlimited surveys, up to 10 questions per survey and up to 3 collectors per survey (a collector is a weblink, email invite or embed). The individual pricing page hides the exact response number until you log in, while the published price list shows a figure of 10 for Basic. The help centre explains how that cap works: free plans have a limit per survey, responses above it are not viewable, and they are deleted either when you choose or automatically one year after collection.

Ten questions is enough for a quick event feedback form or a short NPS check. It is not enough for a customer research questionnaire with demographics, and the response cap means the free plan cannot run a real study. Basic includes question and page skip logic and the question bank, plus a limited set of matrix, ranking, rating and slider questions, so you can build and test a survey before paying.

SurveyMonkey Advantage vs Premier: what the extra ₹36,000 a year adds

Most single users who need more than Standard end up choosing between these two. Advantage (₹23,988 a year) removes the question cap, allows 15,000 responses a year, and adds piping, quotas, sentiment analysis, SPSS export and team collaboration. Premier (₹59,988 a year) raises responses to 40,000 and adds white-label surveys with the SurveyMonkey footer removed, a completion redirect to your own URL, block randomisation, crosstabs, click-map questions, expiring weblinks and phone support.

The AI analysis quota also differs. The detailed comparison lists Analyze with AI at 20 prompts per survey on Advantage and 50 on Premier. For most marketing and HR use, Advantage is the sensible stopping point. Premier pays off mainly for agencies that must hide SurveyMonkey branding from clients, or researchers who live in crosstabs.

Why three team seats can cost less per head than one solo plan

The team pricing is oddly generous next to the individual tiers. Team Advantage in India is ₹18,600 per user per year, which is below the ₹23,988 a solo Advantage user pays, and the shared pool is 50,000 responses a year instead of 15,000. The catch is the three-seat minimum, so the smallest team bill is about ₹55,800 a year. A two-person startup still pays less on two solo Advantage plans; a team of three or more should go straight to the team tier. Each user can register up to two devices at a time, and inviting more people than you have seats brings a prorated charge.

What drives SurveyMonkey Audience panel cost

SurveyMonkey Audience sells responses from its own respondent panel when you do not have a list to send to. It is a one-time purchase on top of any plan, including Basic, and response counts from Audience are sold separately from plan allowances. There is no flat rate card on the help pages. Price per complete response depends on survey length, targeting (age, country, job role and so on), custom balancing, and the qualification rate, meaning how many panellists will actually fit your criteria. You get a live estimate in the Audience preview before paying, and taxes are added at checkout. Two caveats: accounts on the EU data centre cannot use Audience, and some billing countries are blocked for technical reasons, so check that the option appears for your account before planning a study around it.

SurveyMonkey vs Google Forms, with Typeform as the third option

Google Forms is free with any Google account, does not publish a response cap, and sends answers straight into Sheets. For internal forms, registrations and class quizzes it is hard to justify paying for anything else. What it lacks is the research layer: no SurveyMonkey Benchmarks style comparison against industry scores, no quotas, no built-in sentiment or thematic analysis, and no paid panel.

Typeform's free plan allows 10 responses a month, and its paid Basic plan is priced in USD only, at $25 to $39 a month for 100 monthly responses depending on billing period and on which of the two price sets its pricing page shows you. Typeform's one-question-at-a-time layout tends to suit lead capture and quizzes on a website. SurveyMonkey is the better fit for structured questionnaires where analysis matters as much as completion, and for Indian teams its rupee billing is a real advantage over Typeform.

Results, exports and the free-plan export question

SurveyMonkey Analyze is where results land: charts per question, filters, compare rules, trends and, on paid plans, text and sentiment analysis. Survey response export covers individual responses in XLS, CSV, PDF and SPSS, and question summaries in PDF, PPT, XLS and CSV. SurveyMonkey's price list leaves data exports and reports out of Basic. On a free account you can still view the responses inside your cap and copy them by hand, but there is no legitimate free export button.

For SurveyMonkey integrations, the comparison page lists 200+ native connections (limited on Basic) and 7,000+ apps through Zapier, so piping new responses into a CRM or spreadsheet is possible without code. A/B testing of question wording or images is listed in full on paid plans and in limited form on Basic.

Anonymous responses, data centres and AI training

Surveys are not anonymous by default. Weblink collectors record IP addresses and email invitations record names and emails unless you switch on Anonymous Responses for each collector, and the setting only affects new responses. SurveyMonkey's Trust Center lists ISO 27001 (since 2019), SOC 2 Type II, PCI DSS, GDPR and CCPA compliance, AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit. Data sits on AWS in the US, Canada or Ireland; HIPAA is an Enterprise add-on with a separate BAA. On AI, the company says it trains its own models on de-identified or synthetic customer data with personal data excluded, and that third-party AI providers do not train on data it shares with them.

Where SurveyMonkey gets expensive

  • The free tier is a trial in practice, and response visibility is the real wall, not the 10-question cap.
  • Overage on annual plans can add up quietly if a survey goes viral, so set response limits on collectors.
  • Phone support, white-labelling and crosstabs all sit behind Premier pricing.
  • The main pricing pages show USD, so Indian buyers only see the rupee amount at checkout.
  • Tax is a separate question. SurveyMonkey's tax help page lists India under OIDAR, the tax on foreign online services, and says tax may be built into the price or added as its own invoice line depending on billing location. Businesses can enter a tax registration number at checkout.

A practical first week on a SurveyMonkey account

Start on Basic and build the full survey from one of the survey templates or with Build with AI, then trim it to 10 questions to test the flow with colleagues. Turn on Anonymous Responses for the collector if staff or customers need that assurance. If the test answers look right, buy a single month of Standard Monthly for the fieldwork rather than committing to a year (confirm the rupee price at checkout), export everything before the month ends, and move to Advantage or a team plan only once surveys become a regular part of your work. If you need outside respondents, price the panel in the Audience preview first, since that cost often exceeds the subscription.

SurveyMonkey FAQ

What is SurveyMonkey?

SurveyMonkey is an online survey platform founded in 1999 and based in San Mateo, California. You build questionnaires, send them by link, email, embed or its iOS and Android apps, and analyse results with charts, filters and AI tools. An investor group led by STG took the company private in 2023.

Is SurveyMonkey free?

Yes, the Basic plan is free for one user with unlimited surveys. It caps each survey at 10 questions and 3 collectors, and only a small number of responses per survey are viewable. Exports and most advanced features need a paid plan.

How many questions and responses do you get on SurveyMonkey free?

Basic allows 10 questions per survey. SurveyMonkey's published price list shows 10 responses for Basic, while the pricing page asks you to log in to see the exact figure. Responses above the per-survey cap are hidden and are deleted a year after collection, or sooner if you choose.

How do you create a survey in SurveyMonkey?

Create an account, then start from a blank survey, a template or Build with AI by describing what you want to ask. Add questions and skip logic in the builder, preview it, then create a collector such as a weblink or email invitation to send it. Results appear in the Analyze section as responses come in.

Is SurveyMonkey anonymous and secure?

Responses are not anonymous by default: weblinks store IP addresses and email invites store names and emails until you turn on Anonymous Responses for that collector. Security-wise, SurveyMonkey reports ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certification, AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS in transit, with data hosted on AWS in the US, Canada or Ireland.

SurveyMonkey vs Typeform vs Google Forms: which should you pick?

Google Forms is free with no published response cap and suits internal forms and quizzes. Typeform suits conversational lead-capture forms but is USD-only and its free plan allows 10 responses a month. SurveyMonkey is stronger for research-style surveys with benchmarks, quotas, sentiment analysis, a paid respondent panel and INR billing.

Can you pay SurveyMonkey in INR?

Yes. SurveyMonkey's billing help says India's billing currency is INR, based on the country of your payment method. Its published price list puts Advantage at ₹23,988 a year, Premier at ₹59,988 a year and team seats from ₹18,600 per user a year. Confirm the Standard Monthly rupee price, and whether tax is added, at checkout.

What are the best free SurveyMonkey alternatives?

Google Forms is the most capable free option, with no published response cap and direct export to Google Sheets. Typeform has a free plan limited to 10 responses a month. Microsoft Forms is another option for people already using Microsoft 365.

How can you export SurveyMonkey results without paying?

SurveyMonkey treats exports as a paid feature, and Basic does not include data exports or reports. On a free account you can only view the responses inside your cap and copy them manually. The cheapest legitimate route is a single month of Standard Monthly, exporting everything before it ends.

Who should use SurveyMonkey?

It suits HR teams, product and CX teams running NPS or satisfaction surveys, agencies and researchers who need analysis tools, SPSS export or a paid panel. People who only need simple internal forms are usually better served by Google Forms at no cost.
