Our verdict

4.2out of 5

Google Forms is the sensible default for surveys, registrations and school quizzes, because it is free and sends every answer to Sheets. Pay for Typeform only when design and completion rates on customer-facing forms justify the monthly fee.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Google Forms?

Google Forms is the free survey and quiz builder that comes with every Google account, and most readers comparing it with paid tools land on one question: Google Forms vs Typeform, which one is worth your money? The short version is that Forms costs nothing, stores answers in Google Sheets and covers most surveys, registrations and school tests. Typeform's paid plans start somewhere between $25 and $28 a month on yearly billing (its pricing page showed two sets of figures when we checked) and it sells a more polished, one-question-at-a-time experience. This review explains the limits, quiz tools, AI features and pricing so you can decide where your budget should go.

Facts here come from Google's Docs Editors Help pages, the Workspace pricing page, Google's Workspace AI privacy page, Typeform's pricing page and help centre, Microsoft's Forms support article and Jotform's pricing page, all checked on 17 October 2026.

What it is and who should use it

Forms runs in the browser at forms.google.com and sits in Google Workspace next to Docs, Sheets and Drive. Google first added form support to Spreadsheets in February 2008, so the product has been around for a long time and the basics are stable. There is no separate desktop app; respondents fill forms on any phone or computer, and a respondent signed in to a Google account gets a saved draft for 30 days.

It suits teachers, HR teams running internal surveys, event organisers collecting registrations, small businesses taking orders or feedback, and Indian startups already paying for Workspace. It suits people less if the form is the product itself, such as a lead-generation funnel where design and conversion rates matter more than cost.

Key features in practice

  • Question types: short answer, paragraph, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, file upload, linear scale, rating, grids, date and time. Linear scales run from 0 or 1 up to a maximum between 2 and 10.
  • Sections and logic: split long forms into pages and send people to a different section based on an answer, which keeps irrelevant questions out of the way.
  • Response validation: require a number in a range, a minimum text length or a pattern, so you get a usable phone number instead of "ask me later".
  • Form templates: ready-made layouts for event sign-ups, feedback, order forms and quizzes.
  • Live charts: the Summary tab draws charts automatically as answers arrive.
  • Google Sheets integration: link a new or existing spreadsheet and every submission becomes a new row.

Sharing works through a link, email or an embed code for your website. Editing is collaborative: add google forms collaborators as editors and several people can build questions at once, the same way they would in Docs. One detail trips people up: when you link a new sheet, form editors get access to it, but later permission changes do not sync, so you must update the form and the sheet separately.

Developers have two routes. Apps Script has a Forms service for creating and editing forms from code, and the Forms API is a REST interface that can create forms, read responses and send push notifications through watches when someone submits. Google says forms created through the API after 30 June 2026 start unpublished by default.

How the file upload limit works in Google's Forms

The file upload question is the feature people ask about most, and it has three rules worth knowing before you build an application form around it.

  • Every respondent must sign in to a Google account to answer it. Anonymous uploads are not possible, which can cut response rates for public forms.
  • Uploaded files go into a new folder in the form owner's Drive. Because Drive files count toward your account storage (15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos on a free account), a few hundred resumes or videos can fill your quota.
  • The question is blocked if the form lives in a shared drive or if a Workspace admin has switched on Data Loss Prevention.

As the owner you choose the allowed file types, the maximum number of files and the maximum size per file. Google's Workspace Learning Center adds that you can also cap the total size of all files a form collects, which is a sensible guard against a full Drive. Workspace users get far more room, since Google's pricing page lists 30 GB of pooled storage per user on Business Starter, 2 TB on Standard and 5 TB on Plus.

Quiz settings: what Google lets teachers control in Forms

To build a google forms quiz, open Settings and switch on "Make this a quiz". Then click Answer key under each question, mark the correct option and set points. Automatic grading works for short answer, multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown and both grid types. Paragraph answers need manual marking.

The respondent settings decide whether students see missed questions, correct answers and point values. Grades can be released straight after each submission (the default) or later, after you review them. If you collected email addresses, you can send scores by email once grading is done. You can attach written or YouTube video feedback to any answer, and the summary view shows frequently missed questions plus the average, median and range of scores.

On school and work accounts, a quiz can be limited to people in your organisation and its trusted domains. If outside students need to take it, switch off the "Restrict to users in" option in Settings.

Responses, notifications and AI

Under Responses you can turn on email notifications for new submissions. Respondents can get a copy of their answers if you collect emails and choose "When requested" or "Always". For custom confirmation emails, Google points owners to google forms add-ons such as Form Notifications from the Workspace Marketplace. You can also close a form manually, set a close date or cap the number of responses, though Google warns that simultaneous submissions can push past the cap.

Gemini adds two jobs. "Help me create" drafts a form from a text prompt or from Drive files (Docs, Sheets, Slides or PDFs). Google's June 2025 announcement listed Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, the Gemini Education and Education Premium add-ons, and Google AI Pro and Ultra as eligible, English only, and noted it does not build multi-section forms or quiz settings. Separately, Gemini can summarise open text answers once a form has between 3 and 200 responses, and in Sheets it can sort those answers into common themes. Quiz responses are not summarised.

Pricing explained

Forms itself is free with a personal account. Google's Workspace pricing page lists the Forms survey builder on every business plan, and prices are shown in US dollars even on the India page, so there is no official rupee list to quote. Paying mostly buys custom-domain email, more storage for uploads, admin controls and Gemini.

Workspace offers a 14-day trial, and the Workspace figures above are Google's standard list prices; short introductory discounts come and go, so check the pricing page before you buy. Typeform is harder to pin down. On 17 October 2026 its plan cards showed the higher numbers and its comparison table the lower ones, and its help centre admits it is testing different plans. Treat the Typeform figures as a range and confirm the price at checkout.

Google Forms vs Typeform: price, design and limits

Typeform's free plan caps you at 10 responses a month across all forms, and its help centre confirms that limit. Google's help pages list no monthly answer cap for Forms. That single difference settles the choice for most budget-conscious teams. Typeform earns its fee with conversational layouts, stronger branding and a more guided feel for customer-facing forms. If your forms are internal, for a classroom, or collect data that ends up in a spreadsheet anyway, the free Google option is hard to argue against.

Google Forms vs Microsoft Forms

Microsoft Forms is the closest like-for-like rival. Microsoft's support page allows up to 200 questions per form and up to 400 forms per user. A free personal Microsoft account can receive up to 200 responses per form, a paid personal account up to 1,000, and most business and education tenants up to 5,000,000. Choose based on the suite your team already pays for, since both tie into their own spreadsheet and storage tools. Jotform is a third option with more widgets and payment fields; its paid plans start at $34 a month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly).

Privacy, data and commercial use

Google says files created in Forms or uploaded to Drive are encrypted in transit and at rest, and that Forms goes through independent checks of its security and privacy controls. On AI, Google's Workspace privacy page says it does not use customers' Workspace data to train the models behind Gemini, Search and other systems outside Workspace without permission. Personal accounts are covered by the general Google Privacy Policy instead. Encryption does not make a form a safe place for card numbers, passwords or medical records, so avoid collecting those. For personal data under India's DPDP Act, state why you are collecting it, keep the sheet's sharing tight and delete old responses, which cannot be recovered once removed. Commercial use is fine on both free and paid accounts, but businesses get admin controls, Data Loss Prevention and support only on Workspace.

Forms limitations Google has not fixed

  • Design control is basic: colours, header image and fonts, but no custom CSS or layouts.
  • No payments, e-signatures or calculations without third-party tools.
  • File uploads force a sign-in and eat Drive storage.
  • No offline mobile app, and branching is section-based rather than per question.
  • Gemini features need a paid plan, and form generation is English only.

How to get started

Go to forms.google.com, pick a blank form or a template and add your questions. Switch on Collect email addresses if you need receipts or quiz results. Link a sheet from the Responses tab, set up notifications, and preview the form on a phone before sharing. For anything beyond the built-in features, such as reminders or custom workflows, try a small Apps Script function before paying for another tool.

Google Forms FAQ

Is Google Forms free?

Yes. Anyone with a personal Google account can build and share forms, run quizzes and send answers to Google Sheets at no cost. Paid Workspace plans, from $7 per user per month, mainly add storage, admin controls and Gemini features.

How do you create a quiz in Google Forms?

Open the form, go to Settings and turn on Make this a quiz. Add a question, click Answer key, mark the correct answer and set its points. In Settings you then choose when grades are released and whether respondents see missed questions, correct answers and point values.

How many responses can Google Forms collect?

Google's help pages do not publish a monthly response cap for Forms, and you can set your own limit or a close date. Responses can also flow into a linked Google Sheet. Google warns that if many people submit at once, the total can exceed a limit you set.

How do you collect file uploads in Google Forms?

Add a question and choose File upload as its type, then set allowed file types, the maximum number of files and the maximum size per file. You can also cap the total size of everything the form collects. Respondents must sign in to a Google account, and files land in a new folder in the owner's Drive, using the owner's storage. The question is unavailable for forms in shared drives or where an admin has turned on Data Loss Prevention.

Is Google Forms secure for personal data?

Google says files in Forms and Drive are encrypted in transit and at rest, and Forms undergoes independent checks of its security and privacy controls. That suits routine contact details and feedback. Avoid collecting passwords, card numbers or sensitive health data, and keep the linked sheet's sharing restricted.

Google Forms vs Typeform: which is better?

Forms is free and its help pages set no monthly response cap, while Typeform's free plan allows 10 responses a month. Typeform's Basic plan, with 100 responses a month, cost $25 to $28 a month on yearly billing on 17 October 2026, as its pricing page showed two sets of figures. Typeform offers more polished, conversational design and branding. Choose it for customer-facing forms where looks drive completions, and Forms for internal, school or data collection work.

Google Forms vs Microsoft Forms: what is the difference?

Both are free with their parent accounts and cover surveys and quizzes. Microsoft Forms allows up to 200 questions per form, and a free personal account can receive up to 200 responses per form, rising to 5,000,000 on most business and education tenants. Pick the one that matches the office suite your team already uses.

Google Forms vs Jotform: which should you pick?

Jotform offers more widgets, payment fields and design options, with paid plans starting at $34 a month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly), and a free Starter plan with lower limits. Forms is simpler and free, with direct links to Google Sheets. Jotform suits order forms and payments, while Forms suits quick surveys and quizzes.

What are the best Google Forms alternatives?

Typeform is the main pick for design-led, conversational forms. Microsoft Forms is the natural choice for Microsoft 365 teams, and Jotform suits forms that need payments and many field types. Each has a free tier with tighter limits than Google's.

How do you make Google Forms send an email confirmation?

Turn on Collect email addresses in Settings, then set Send responders a copy of their response to When requested or Always. Google notes that spam filters can sometimes block these receipts. For custom confirmation emails, install an add-on such as Form Notifications.
