Our verdict

3.9out of 5

SpyFu is the cheapest serious way to study what competitors buy and test in Google Ads, and its $79 Professional plan has no search caps. India is covered, but depth varies by niche, so check your own market in the free version first. Teams that need audits, content tools or strong backlink data should pay for Semrush or Ahrefs instead.

What is SpyFu?

SpyFu's Professional plan costs $79 a month and removes the caps on search results, exports and domain PDFs, which is the main reason PPC managers keep it open in a tab next to a bigger suite. This SpyFu competitor keyword research review and pricing guide looks at what each of the two plans actually includes, how much the India data can be trusted, and where Semrush or Ahrefs would be the better buy. The facts come from SpyFu's pricing page, its help centre and its terms of service, read in October 2026.

Where SpyFu PPC competitor research earns its fee

Mike Roberts started SpyFu in his garage in the mid-2000s to see which Google Ads keywords his rivals were paying for, and paid search is still the part of the product that justifies the bill. Enter a domain and you get the keywords it bids on, estimated monthly clicks and an estimated ad budget. The ad history view is the real asset. It lays out, month by month, which ad copy a competitor ran on a keyword, so you can see which headlines survived their split tests and which were quietly dropped. In a crowded category such as education or insurance, that history replaces weeks of paid trial and error.

Smaller PPC research tools sit around it. Kombat compares your domain with your top rivals and lists the core terms they buy that you don't. The Google Ads Advisor suggests keywords based on competitor bidding history. Negative-match recommendations suggest terms to exclude, which can trim wasted spend early in a campaign.

Be careful with the budget numbers. SpyFu's own accuracy article explains that spend is calculated from Google's search volume and cost-per-click data plus SpyFu's click estimates, so these are modelled figures, not invoices. SpyFu suggests checking its figure for your own domain against real spend, then applying that ratio to competitors. If it shows $10,000 for you and you really spend $20,000, a rival shown at $18,000 is probably near $36,000.

Organic tools: Kombat, ranking history and backlink outreach

For SEO research, the domain overview lists the terms a site ranks for in Google's top 100, estimated clicks, top pages and the sites it overlaps with most. SEO Kombat finds gaps, meaning terms two or three rivals rank for while you don't. That turns competitor keywords into a content plan instead of guesswork. Ranking history lets you check whether a rival's traffic jump came from one strong page or a sitewide change, and Professional keeps more than ten years of it.

Backlink outreach works by finding pages that link to sites ranking for a chosen keyword, along with contact details for site owners. Basic includes 250 sales leads and domain contacts and Professional includes 500. The link index is smaller than what Ahrefs maintains, so use it as a prospecting list rather than a full audit of anyone's profile.

Keyword grouping takes a pasted list and clusters it with volume and CPC attached, handy for planning ad groups or content silos. Rank tracking is weekly, with 5,000 keywords on Basic and 15,000 on Professional. Newer additions include an AI site audit that checks for more than 100 technical and on-page issues, and a SpyFu GPT assistant. RivalFlowAI is sold separately and is not part of either plan.

SpyFu pricing: Basic vs Professional in rupees

There are two plans, both charged in US dollars. SpyFu does not publish rupee prices, so the INR figures below are approximate conversions at ₹94.7 per dollar. Your card issuer's forex markup is extra.

PlanBilled monthlyBilled yearlyMain limits
Basic$39/mo (approx. ₹3,693)$399/yr (approx. ₹37,785)10,000 rows per search and per export, 100 domain overview PDFs, 6 months of history, 5,000 weekly tracked keywords, 250 leads, extra seat $15
Professional$79/mo (approx. ₹7,481)$696/yr (approx. ₹65,911)No caps on results, exports or PDFs, 10+ years of history, 15,000 weekly tracked keywords, 500 leads, API access, extra seat $30

The gap between the two is mostly history and API, not row counts. Six months of data shows what a rival is doing now, but not how their ads changed across a festive season or a full financial year, and that long view is exactly why people pay for ad history. Agencies that want SpyFu numbers inside their own dashboards also need Professional, because Basic has no API. Paid yearly, Professional works out to $58 a month (approx. ₹5,493), which saves $252 a year compared with monthly billing.

The pricing page promises a 30-day money-back guarantee. Outside that window, the terms (last updated in February 2019) say fees are non-refundable and plans renew automatically, so put the renewal date in your calendar. A login is meant for one person at a time. Extra seats cost $15 (approx. ₹1,421) on Basic and $30 (approx. ₹2,841) on Professional.

SpyFu free search limits and what a free account shows

There is no trial with a start and end date. The help centre describes a free version with no time limit instead: share an email address and you can keep searching domains and keywords, but the expanded, full results, keyword tracking and a custom search list need a paid plan. That is enough to judge whether SpyFu has data for your market, not enough to build a campaign. SpyFu does not publish row limits for free users. Paid plans include unlimited searches, but Basic caps each result set and export at 10,000 rows. Professional lifts those caps.

How much data SpyFu holds for Indian websites

India is one of 32 countries listed in SpyFu's help article on Google search coverage (updated March 2026), alongside the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and Singapore. The homepage now claims 38 countries, so the list may be growing. For markets outside the list, SpyFu says it does not hold full results, although a site from elsewhere can appear if it ranks in a covered country.

Being on the list is not the same as being well covered. SpyFu only records keywords it has added to its own crawl list, and its help docs say rankings refresh about once a month on average, with higher-volume terms checked more often. If your audience searches long-tail or regional-language phrases, test the free version on your own domain and two rivals before paying.

Why a domain can come back empty

Small sites often get a blank report, and the help centre lists the usual causes. On the organic side, the site may rank below position 100 for every term SpyFu checks, or only for niche phrases SpyFu does not yet search, or the domain was typed wrongly. On the paid side, the advertiser may limit ads to one city or certain hours, or run out of daily budget before SpyFu's crawler looks. Fixes: enter the bare domain without https or www, confirm .in versus .com, and add your own keywords to SpyFu's list of terms to search.

Reading SpyFu's numbers without overtrusting them

Search volume and CPC come largely from Google's keyword tools, which SpyFu says it now supplements with other sources. Clicks are SpyFu's estimate, using a click-through curve that adjusts for ads, shopping and video results; its accuracy article gives the example of the top organic result getting about 21% of clicks, dropping to about 8% when shopping results appear. Rankings are firmer, since SpyFu keeps cached copies of the Google pages it captures, including screenshots of ads. Treat volumes and spend as direction, and trust the relative comparisons between competitors more than any single absolute figure.

SpyFu vs Semrush for a Google Ads-heavy agency

Semrush's SEO plan costs $139 a month (approx. ₹13,163), and its free account allows 10 reports a day. That buys a much wider toolkit, including site audits, content tools and local SEO. Semrush also has its own advertising research, so the SpyFu vs Semrush choice is less about features existing and more about cost and focus.

SpyFu wins on price per search. Professional at $79 has no caps on search results or exports, and the ad history archive is easier to read when the job is copying a rival's winning ad structure. Semrush wins on depth and breadth, especially for audits, content work and non-Google channels. A common pattern for smaller Indian agencies is SpyFu Professional for paid search and competitor checks, with a cheaper tool, or Ahrefs Free's limited Site Audit, covering technical checks. Ahrefs, whose Lite plan is $129 a month, is the pick if backlinks are the main concern.

What SpyFu's terms allow in client reports

Agencies should read the content clause. The terms say you may not sell, publish or redistribute SpyFu content without written permission, except for occasionally handing a few printed pages or PDFs to a few people with the source credited and a "Used with permission from SpyFu.com" line. The built-in branded client reports are the safe route for regular reporting; for anything wider, ask SpyFu first.

On privacy, SpyFu says it does not sell personal data, card payments go through a third-party processor with no permanent record kept on its servers, and data from EU users is transferred to the United States. Disputes fall under Arizona law. Support is by email, plus live chat Monday to Friday from 6am to 5pm. The company page gives no time zone, but if those are US hours the chat window falls overnight in India.

Using the 30-day refund window well

  • Run your own domain and three competitors through the free version first. If two of them return almost nothing, stop there.
  • If the data looks usable, buy Professional monthly rather than yearly, so the refund window covers a real test.
  • In week one, export each rival's paid terms and ad history, then run Kombat to find terms they buy that you don't.
  • Set up rank tracking for your 200 most important terms and compare SpyFu's spend estimate for your own domain with real Google Ads spend.
  • Before day 30, decide whether to switch to annual billing, drop to Basic, or ask for the refund.

Who should pay after this SpyFu competitor keyword research review and pricing check

SpyFu suits PPC freelancers, performance agencies and in-house marketers who spend real money on Google Ads and want to see what competitors bid on, what copy they test and roughly what they spend. The uncapped Professional plan is good value for heavy researchers at well under what Semrush or Ahrefs charge. It is a thin choice for a purely local business, for anyone whose priority is technical audits or link building, and for teams that need data from Bing or social platforms. Check your own market in the free version first; the India data exists, but its depth depends on the terms you target.

SpyFu FAQ

What is SpyFu?

SpyFu is a US-based competitor research tool for Google search. It shows the keywords a domain ranks for and bids on in Google Ads, estimated clicks and ad budgets, and years of ad copy history. It also includes rank tracking, keyword grouping, backlink prospecting and an API on the Professional plan.

How much does SpyFu cost?

According to SpyFu's pricing page, Basic costs $39 a month (approx. ₹3,693) or $399 a year, and Professional costs $79 a month (approx. ₹7,481) or $696 a year. Extra user seats cost $15 on Basic and $30 on Professional. Prices are in US dollars and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Does SpyFu have a free version?

Yes. SpyFu's help centre describes a free version with no time limit rather than a fixed-length trial. You can search domains and keywords after sharing an email address, but the expanded, full results and keyword tracking need a paid plan.

How do I see competitor keywords on SpyFu?

Type the competitor's domain into the search bar to open its domain overview, then open the SEO or PPC keyword lists to see the terms it ranks for or bids on. To find gaps, use Kombat, which compares your site with your top rivals and shows the keywords they have that you don't.

Is SpyFu data accurate?

Rankings and ad copy are well grounded because SpyFu keeps cached copies of the Google results pages it captures. Search volume and CPC come mainly from Google's keyword tools, while clicks and ad spend are SpyFu's estimates. SpyFu suggests comparing its estimate for your own domain with your real spend and scaling competitor figures by the same ratio.

SpyFu vs Semrush: which is better?

Semrush is the broader suite, with audits, content, local and AI search tools, and its SEO plan starts at $139 a month. SpyFu is cheaper, uncapped on its $79 Professional plan, and easier to use for Google Ads competitor research and ad history. Pick SpyFu for paid search research on a budget and Semrush if you need one tool for all of SEO.

Does SpyFu work for Indian websites?

Yes, India is one of the countries in SpyFu's Google search data, according to its help centre. Depth varies, because SpyFu only records keywords on its own crawl list, so niche, local or regional-language terms may be missing. Test your own domain and a few competitors in the free version before you pay.

What are the best SpyFu alternatives?

Semrush is the closest all-round alternative, with stronger audits and content tools at a higher price. Ahrefs, from $129 a month for Lite (with a $29 Starter plan and a limited Ahrefs Free tier), is better for backlink analysis. Budget users often look at Ubersuggest for basic keyword and rank data.

Why does SpyFu show no data for my domain?

SpyFu's help centre says this usually means the site ranks below the top 100 for the terms it tracks, ranks only for niche terms SpyFu does not search yet, or the domain was entered wrongly. Missing ads can be caused by geo or time targeting, or budgets running out early in the day. Enter the bare domain without https or www and add your own keywords to SpyFu's search list.

Who is SpyFu best for?

It suits PPC freelancers, performance agencies and in-house marketers who spend on Google Ads and want competitor bids, ad tests and spend estimates. Heavy researchers get good value from the uncapped Professional plan. Local businesses and teams focused on technical SEO or link building are usually better served elsewhere.
