Our verdict

1.4out of 5

Sora is no longer an option: OpenAI closed the app on 26 April 2026 and the API on 24 September 2026, with no replacement. Its watermark and consent rules remain a good yardstick, but Indian creators should compare Veo through Google AI Pro, Runway and Adobe Firefly instead.

What is OpenAI Sora?

Less than six months. That was the gap between the Sora 2 launch and OpenAI's notice that it would pull the plug, and it changes what any Sora AI video generator review and pricing page has to say in late 2026. OpenAI announced the shutdown on 24 March 2026 (the date its deprecations page gives for notifying developers), closed the Sora app and sora.com on 26 April 2026, and switched off the Sora API on 24 September 2026. Nothing replaced it. If you landed here wanting to sign up, the short answer is that you cannot, and the useful question becomes what to use instead.

This page keeps the record of what Sora offered, explains why invite codes, rupee prices and country lists no longer matter, and points Indian creators and agencies towards text to video tools that still take new customers.

The two-step shutdown, and what OpenAI says happens to your files

OpenAI's help centre article on the discontinuation lays out the timeline plainly. Web and mobile access ended on 26 April 2026. Developers got a longer runway: the deprecations page in OpenAI's API docs lists the Videos API and every Sora model alias (sora-2, sora-2-pro and their dated snapshots from October and December 2025) with a removal date of 24 September 2026. The column for a recommended replacement model is empty.

For anyone who still had clips saved, the same help article says exports were handled from a sunset page on sora.chatgpt.com, with an email sent once the archive was ready. OpenAI says it may offer one final export window, which is not guaranteed and would be announced by email; after that, all data tied to your Sora use is permanently deleted. Refund requests follow the normal ChatGPT subscription process, and any ChatGPT or Sora credits you bought can still be spent on Codex, OpenAI's coding agent. So the money is not lost outright, though a video creator may have little use for coding credits.

Both the original Sora 2 announcement and OpenAI's safety post now carry a banner stating that the product is no longer available as of 26 April 2026.

What Sora 2 actually did during its short run

OpenAI released Sora 2 on 30 September 2025 as its flagship video and audio model. The headline change from the first Sora (which reached ChatGPT subscribers in December 2024) was synchronised sound: dialogue, effects and ambience came out with the picture instead of needing a separate pass. Alongside the model came a social app built around a scrolling feed, where people could watch, like and remix each other's clips.

The features people used most:

  • Text to video and image-based prompts, producing short clips with audio.
  • Remix, which took someone else's public video and changed the scene, style or characters while keeping the structure.
  • Cameo (OpenAI's own posts now call the feature characters), which put a verified person's likeness and voice into a generated scene.
  • Storyboard mode on the web, which ChatGPT Pro subscribers got in October 2025 for planning a longer clip shot by shot.
  • The Pro model, an experimental higher-quality model that OpenAI offered to ChatGPT Pro subscribers on sora.com.

On clip duration, early videos topped out at about 10 seconds. On 16 and 17 October 2025, TechRadar and eWeek reported that OpenAI had raised the limit to 15 seconds for all users, in the app and on the web, and to 25 seconds for ChatGPT Pro subscribers on the web.

The Sora 2 app invite code system and why it no longer matters

OpenAI's launch post described the app as invite-based. You downloaded it, signed up inside the app to be told when your account was let in, or used an invite code from someone who already had access. Old "free Sora invite code" posts still circulate on social media, but there is nothing left for them to open.

The rollout began in the US and Canada on iOS only. An Android version followed in early November 2025, and TechCrunch and Tom's Guide reported that it was limited to the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. India was not on that list. Today none of this applies, because the Sora app no longer works anywhere and any code you find is useless.

Sora pricing on ChatGPT Plus and Pro, then and now

At launch, Sora 2 was free to try with what OpenAI called generous limits subject to compute. That did not last. By the start of November 2025, press reports said OpenAI had begun selling extra generations to people who ran out. ChatGPT Pro subscribers got the longest clips and the Sora 2 Pro model.

Here is where the plans stand in October 2026, using OpenAI's own pages:

OptionPriceSora or video generation today
Sora app and sora.comNot soldDiscontinued on 26 April 2026
Sora API (Videos API)Not soldDiscontinued on 24 September 2026; sora-2 was reported at $0.10 per second of 720p output while it ran
ChatGPT Go (India)Launched at ₹399/mo in August 2025; no amount shown on the pricing page nowNo video generation listed
ChatGPT Plus$20/moNo video generation listed on the pricing page
ChatGPT ProShown as "From" on the pricing pageNo video generation listed

So, how much does Sora cost in India? Nothing, because it cannot be bought. Paying for ChatGPT Plus today gets you chat, image generation, voice and Codex, but OpenAI's pricing page no longer mentions any video model on any tier. If video is the only reason you were considering chatgpt plus, hold off.

Watermarks, C2PA and the cameo consent rules

Safety was the strongest part of the product, and the rules are a useful benchmark when you judge rival tools. According to OpenAI's "Launching Sora responsibly" post, all outputs carried a visible watermark at launch, and every Sora video embedded C2PA metadata, the industry standard that records where a file came from. OpenAI also kept internal reverse image and audio search to trace clips back to Sora.

Likeness use required consent. To create a cameo you recorded a short, one-time video and audio clip so the system could verify you. Only you decided who could use your character, you could revoke that permission at any time, and you could see every video that featured you, including other people's drafts, then delete or report them. Depictions of public figures were blocked, except where they came through the characters feature. Teen accounts got stricter defaults, and prompts or audio that imitated living musicians were refused.

That framework did not stop criticism. Shortly after launch, the Motion Picture Association issued a statement calling on OpenAI to act on copyright concerns.

Sora vs Veo 3: Google's model is the comparison that survived

Before the shutdown, the most common head-to-head was OpenAI's model against Google's Veo 3 family, since both generate synced audio with the picture. With Sora gone, the question of which is better answers itself. Google now sells Veo inside its consumer AI plans: according to our Gemini review, Google AI Pro (₹1,950 a month in India, $19.99 in the US) includes limited access to Veo 3.1 Lite, while the top Veo 3.1 model sits in Google AI Ultra, from ₹6,500 a month. The cheaper AI Plus plan (₹399) also lists video generation, but the free Gemini plan does not include video at all.

For an Indian buyer, that matters for two reasons. Google publishes rupee prices, and Veo also turns up inside third-party tools such as Runway and Leonardo, so you can pay for it through an editor you already use.

Sora alternatives with free tiers worth trying

Truly free, unlimited video generation is rare because it is expensive to run. OpenAI gave no detailed reason for closing Sora, though press reports pointed to high running costs. These options let you test before paying:

  • Runway: a free plan with 125 one-time credits and watermarked exports; Standard costs $15 a month and removes the watermark.
  • Adobe Firefly: limited free daily generations across image, video and audio; Firefly Standard is ₹797.68 a month including GST with up to 20 five-second videos.
  • Google AI Plus: not free, but at ₹399 a month it is the cheapest Google plan with video generation; the free Gemini tier has none.
  • Kling: sells credit packs that, per its credit policy, stay valid for two years and are refunded when a generation fails.

Leonardo dropped Sora 2 from its model list in July 2026, so older tutorials that send you there for Sora are out of date too.

Why you will see "Sora is not available" from every country

Before April 2026, that message usually meant a regional block: the new app rolled out country by country, and India was not among the markets named at launch or in the Android release. Now the cause is simpler. The service has been switched off everywhere, so a VPN, a new account or a fresh invite code will not help. Treat any website still selling "Sora access" with suspicion; with the official API closed since September, such sites are either routing you to a different model or simply taking your money.

Our Sora AI video generator review and pricing verdict

Judged against the tools you can actually buy, Sora scores near the bottom simply because it is gone. As a piece of technology it was strong: synced audio, a fun remix feed and the most careful likeness consent process in consumer video. As a business it struggled, with press reports pointing to heavy running costs, and that is a reminder to avoid locking an agency workflow into a single vendor's video model.

Practical next steps if you were planning around Sora:

  • If you had an account, check your email for any final export window notice and request a ChatGPT refund if you are entitled to one.
  • For marketing clips with sound, trial Veo through Google AI Pro or through Runway's free credits and compare output on the same three prompts.
  • For product shots and social reels on a rupee budget, Adobe Firefly's GST-inclusive INR pricing is the most predictable of the group.
  • Whatever you pick, keep the C2PA metadata intact and disclose AI-generated footage to clients, the same standard Sora set.

Who was Sora best for? Social creators in North America who enjoyed remixing friends' cameos, and ChatGPT Pro users who wanted longer clips with audio from a familiar login. Neither group can use it now.

OpenAI Sora FAQ

What is OpenAI Sora?

Sora was OpenAI's text to video model and app. Sora 2, launched on 30 September 2025, generated short clips with synced audio and came with a social feed for remixing videos. OpenAI discontinued the app on 26 April 2026 and the API on 24 September 2026.

How much does Sora cost in India?

Sora cannot be bought in India or anywhere else, because OpenAI has shut it down. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and ChatGPT Go launched in India at ₹399 a month, but neither plan lists video generation today. Google AI Plus at ₹399 a month is the cheapest Google plan with video, and AI Pro (₹1,950) adds limited Veo 3.1 Lite access.

Is Sora free to use?

Sora 2 started free with limits in late 2025, and press reports said OpenAI began selling extra generations soon after. Since 26 April 2026 there is no free or paid access at all. The free tiers of Runway and Adobe Firefly are the practical substitutes.

How do you use Sora to make a video from text?

While it ran, you typed a prompt in the Sora app or on sora.com, picked an orientation and duration, and Sora returned a clip with sound that you could remix; Pro subscribers could also plan longer clips with storyboards. That workflow no longer works. Runway, Veo in Gemini and Firefly follow a similar prompt-to-clip process.

Is Sora safe and are videos watermarked?

OpenAI says all Sora outputs carried a visible watermark at launch, and every video embedded C2PA provenance metadata. Cameos needed a one-time identity recording, and owners could revoke access and delete videos using their likeness. Depictions of public figures were blocked outside the characters feature.

Sora vs Google Veo: which is better?

Today Veo is the only one of the two you can use, so it wins by default. Google offers limited Veo 3.1 Lite access in Google AI Pro and the full Veo 3.1 model in AI Ultra. Both models generated audio with the video, which was the main point of comparison before Sora closed.

Is Sora available in India?

No. The Sora 2 app launched in the US and Canada, and its Android release in November 2025 added a few Asian markets such as Japan and South Korea, but India was not on either list. Since April 2026 it is unavailable in every country.

What are the best free Sora alternatives?

Runway gives 125 one-time free credits, Adobe Firefly offers limited free daily generations, and Kling sells top-up credits that stay valid for two years. If you can pay a little, Google AI Plus at ₹399 a month adds video generation in Gemini. Expect watermarks or tight limits on any free tier.

Why is Sora not working or not available in my country?

Sora is not working because OpenAI switched it off globally, with the app closing on 26 April 2026 and the API on 24 September 2026. Before that, the message usually meant your country was outside the limited rollout. A VPN or new invite code will not restore access now.

Who is Sora best for?

Sora suited social creators who liked remixing cameos and ChatGPT Pro users who wanted longer clips with audio. As it is discontinued, it is not a fit for anyone choosing a tool today. Agencies should look at Veo, Runway or Firefly instead.
