What is Canva?

Canva is a browser-based design tool that lets non-designers make social posts, presentations, videos, documents, websites and print files from ready-made layouts. Most readers arrive with one search in mind, Canva Pro vs free what is the difference, and whether paying is worth it. Short version: the free plan is generous enough for occasional work, but anyone producing content every week for a brand or client will hit its limits on premium assets, AI usage, brand controls and background removal fairly quickly.

The company was founded in 2013 by Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht and Cameron Adams and is headquartered in Sydney, Australia. Canva's about page cites more than 220 million monthly active users. It now calls itself a "Visual Suite", which covers designs, Canva Docs, Sheets, whiteboards, a video editor, websites and, since its 2024 purchase of Serif, the Affinity desktop apps.

What is Canva used for, and who is it for?

In practice, Canva is used for Instagram and LinkedIn posts, YouTube thumbnails, pitch decks, flyers, menus, school worksheets, short reels and simple one-page websites. The appeal is speed: you pick from Canva templates, swap in your text and photos, and export.

It suits Indian small businesses, D2C founders, social media managers, freelancers, agencies, teachers and students. It is a weaker fit for photo retouchers, packaging designers who need exact prepress control, or motion designers on complex timelines.

Canva Pro vs free what is the difference in daily use

According to Canva's pricing page (checked 17 October 2026), the gap comes down to five areas:

• Content library: Free gives you 1.6M+ templates and 4.7M+ stock assets. Pro opens 3.6M+ templates and 141M+ premium photos, graphics, videos, audio and fonts.
• AI allowance: Free gets up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month. Pro gets up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses, roughly 10 times more.
• Brand Kit: Free allows one brand kit limited to three colours. Pro allows five full kits with logos, fonts and colours.
• Storage: 5GB on Free versus 100GB on Pro.
• Pro-only tools: Background Remover, Magic Resize, social content scheduling and Bulk Create are paid features.

Everything else (the editor, presentations, video editing, Canva Docs, real-time sharing, basic AI tools and PNG/JPG/PDF/MP4 downloads) works on both. If your work is a few posters a month using free assets, the free tier is fine.

What can you do on Canva for free?

Quite a lot. You can design in any format, use 1.6 million free layouts, record and edit video in the Canva video editor, write in Canva Docs, build a basic website, collaborate with others in real time and download without watermarks as long as you avoid premium elements. You also get 20 AI uses each month, enough for light text-to-image or writing experiments, plus free access to Affinity on desktop. The catch: crown-marked premium items cannot be downloaded clean, and resizing must be done by hand.

Canva Pro price in India

Prices from Canva's India and US pricing pages on 17 October 2026 (yearly billing, tax added at checkout):

Canva says yearly billing saves "from 16%", but the page showed no monthly rupee figures when checked, so confirm the monthly rate at checkout. Pro covers one person only. The old Canva Teams plan is gone for new buyers; Business replaces it, priced per person with no minimum seat count, and you pay only for members who accept an invite. It adds approvals, 100 brand kits, admin controls and Flourish for data visualisation.

Pro Lite is a cheaper tier currently sold in India and Indonesia. Canva's help centre says it includes unlimited premium content, CMYK export, Background Remover, Magic Resize, Magic Eraser, Magic Grab and up to three brand kits, but keeps the Free AI allowance and leaves out conversational design in Canva AI. For a solo seller who mainly wants premium stock and one-click cut-outs, ₹1,590 a year is the best value in the lineup.

Can I pay for Canva in India with UPI?

Yes. Canva's help centre says Indian users can pay for recurring Pro and Pro Lite subscriptions with UPI Autopay, with mandates up to ₹15,000, and use normal UPI (QR code) for one-time purchases such as prints or short-term plans. UPI Autopay is not available for Business.

Canva Magic Studio features

Canva's AI tools were launched under the Magic Studio name and now sit inside a broader Canva AI assistant. The ones you will use most:

• Magic Design and on-brand design generation: describe what you need and get starter layouts that follow your brand kit.
• Dream Lab (alongside the older Magic Media tool): text-to-image generation, with a separate video generator. Dream Lab returns four images per prompt and can use a reference picture.
• Magic Write: drafts captions, blog intros and Canva Docs copy.
• Magic Resize: converts one design into many sizes (Pro and above).
• Magic Eraser, Magic Grab and Magic Layers: remove objects, move a subject, or split a flat image into editable layers.
• Canva Code: generates small interactive widgets from a prompt.

Every generation draws on the monthly AI allowance. Heavy users can add AI Pass, a recurring monthly add-on for Pro and Business, while Business accounts that pay online can also buy one-time top-ups that last 30 days. Canva does not name the underlying image models on its public pages.

How to use the Canva AI image generator

Per Canva's help article, open the home page, choose More, then Dream Lab. Type a detailed prompt, optionally attach a reference image, and press Generate. Pick one of the four results, refine it with a follow-up instruction ("make the car blue"), and use Boost resolution if you need a sharper file. Each step, including boosting, uses AI allowance.

How to remove background in Canva

Select a photo or video in the editor and click BG Remover on the toolbar. The background remover is a paid feature (Pro Lite, Pro, Business and above). Canva's help page lists limits: photos under 9MB, outputs capped at 10MP, videos under 10 minutes, and batch processing of up to 50 images in a folder at a time.

Bulk create, brand kits and team work

Bulk Create fills a template from a CSV or XLSX file, a Canva Sheet (up to 300 rows) or data apps such as HubSpot, so a coaching institute can produce 200 named certificates in minutes. It needs Pro or higher and runs on desktop web or the desktop app. Agencies gain most from multiple brand kits and built-in social scheduling.

Canva vs Photoshop

Photoshop is a pixel editor for retouching, compositing and precise masking. Canva is a layout tool built around templates. Adobe India lists the Photoshop single-app plan at ₹6,899 a year including GST, well above Canva Pro. If you need frequency separation or 16-bit editing, Photoshop wins. If you need 30 on-brand social posts by Friday, Canva is faster. Canva's own answer to that gap is Affinity, its pro design app, now free for individuals on Windows and Mac, with Canva AI inside it for paid users.

Canva vs Adobe Express and other alternatives

Adobe Express makes sense if you already live in Creative Cloud and want Firefly. Other Canva alternatives: Figma for UI work, Kittl for typography-heavy merchandise and Microsoft Designer for quick social graphics.

Is Canva safe for commercial use?

Mostly yes. Canva's Content License Agreement allows free and Pro content in ads, social posts, packaging and prints for resale. The rules that trip people up: you cannot use stock elements as part of a logo or trademark, cannot resell elements on their own (for example, a plain stock image on a print-on-demand mug), and Pro content online is limited to 480,000 pixels per file unless hosted by Canva. AI outputs are treated as free or Pro content. Anything made on a Canva for Education account is non-commercial only. You own your own uploads, per the Terms of Use.

On data: Canva's privacy page says user content is used to improve AI features only if your privacy settings allow it, and you can change that toggle any time. Training is switched off for Education, Business and Enterprise accounts. Canva says it stores data in the United States, although group companies in other countries also process it.

Is Canva Pro free for students?

Partly. Canva for Education is 100% free for K-12 teachers and their students, but students must be invited by a verified teacher. College and university students fall under Canva Campus, which institutions arrange through Canva's sales team; students get free access only once their institution qualifies, so ask your college first. Registered nonprofits can apply for free Pro-level features for one team of up to 50 people, with extra seats at half the Enterprise rate.

Limitations to know before paying

• Listed prices exclude tax, so expect GST on top in India.
• Pro's AI allowance is pooled and resets monthly, and Ultra-tier generations eat into it fast.
• Print exports and colour control are basic compared with InDesign or Affinity.
• Free trials run on the Free AI allowance, so you cannot fully test AI limits before paying.
• Individual plans lean on the help centre; priority support and a success manager need an Enterprise contract of 150 or more seats.

How to get a Canva Pro free trial and get started

Sign up at canva.com with Google, email or phone, then click "Start your Canva Pro free trial" on the Pro or pricing page. You will need to add a payment method (cards and PayPal work, and Indian users can set up UPI Autopay for Pro); cancel before the trial ends if you do not want to be charged. Next, set up your brand kit (logo, colours, fonts), save two or three templates you reuse, and install the Android, iOS, Windows or Mac app. Use the trial to see whether you really need premium assets, Magic Resize and background removal; if not, Pro Lite or Free will do.

So what is the gap between Pro and the free plan worth in rupees? For one active brand, ₹4,000 a year (about ₹333 a month) is easy to justify against freelance design fees. For occasional personal designs, stay on Free.
