Our verdict

4.2out of 5

Slack is the most pleasant team chat tool for companies that work in channels all day and collaborate with outside clients. It costs more per seat than Microsoft Teams and bills Indian teams in dollars, so buy Pro only if the 90-day free history becomes a real problem.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Slack?

Slack is a team messaging app owned by Salesforce, and for most Indian startups the real question is cost per seat. This review breaks down slack vs microsoft teams pricing with the numbers from both official pricing pages, then covers the free plan, Slack AI, privacy and whether the Pro plan is worth paying for in US dollars.

Facts here were checked on 17 October 2026 against slack.com/pricing, Slack's help centre and Microsoft's Teams comparison page. Prices change often, so treat this as a snapshot and confirm on the checkout screen before you buy.

What Slack is used for and who it suits

Slack replaces internal email with organised conversations. Work happens in slack channels, which are rooms for a project, client, team or topic. Replies go into threads so a busy channel does not turn into one long scroll. On top of chat you get voice and video huddles, shared documents called canvases, lists, a no-code workflow builder and a large app directory.

It was founded in 2009 as Tiny Speck in Vancouver, launched Slack after its game Glitch shut down, and was bought by Salesforce in a deal that closed in July 2021. It is now run as Slack Technologies, a Salesforce company, with its head office at Salesforce Tower in San Francisco.

Slack fits software teams, agencies, remote-first startups and any company that works closely with outside clients or vendors. It is a weaker fit for a business that already lives inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and only needs basic chat, because those suites bundle chat at a lower effective price.

Key features in practice

  • Channels and threads: public or private channels per project, with threaded replies to keep side discussions contained.
  • Huddles: quick audio or video calls inside any channel or DM. Paid plans allow up to 50 people, with 25 on video at once and two screen shares at a time.
  • Slack Connect: shared channels and DMs with people at other companies, so a client does not need a guest login to your workspace.
  • Slack canvas and lists: pinned documents and simple trackers that live inside a channel instead of a separate wiki.
  • Slack workflows: a builder for routine tasks such as leave requests, stand-up prompts or form intake, without code.
  • Slack apps and integrations: connectors for Google Drive, Jira, GitHub, Salesforce and thousands more, plus a developer platform.
  • Slack AI: thread and channel summaries, huddle notes, AI search and daily recaps, depending on the plan.

For developers, Slack publishes Bolt frameworks for JavaScript, Python and Java, plus Node, Python and Java SDKs. Rate limits are set per API method, per workspace, per app. Newer non-Marketplace commercial apps face tighter limits on two history-reading methods since May 2025, which matters if you plan to sell a Slack bot.

Slack pricing plans explained

Slack charges per active user per month. The US pricing page lists four tiers:

PlanBilled monthlyBilled yearlyMain additions
Free$0$090 days of history, 10 apps, 1:1 huddles
Pro$8.75 per user$7.25 per userUnlimited history, group huddles, Slack Connect channels, Google OAuth sign-in, basic AI
Business+$18 per user$15 per userSAML single sign-on, SCIM, data residency (including Mumbai), advanced AI
Enterprise+Not offered (annual only)$45 per user (US page)Enterprise search, enterprise-grade AI, compliance tooling

A launch offer gives 50% off monthly Pro or Business+ for the first three months, but only if you buy online within seven days of creating the team. It does not apply to annual billing. Enterprise+ is not simply Enterprise Grid with a new name. Slack added it as a new top plan in June 2025, and older Enterprise Grid contracts still exist, but the public pricing page now lists only Enterprise+. The India page shows no figure for it and asks you to contact sales.

The fair billing policy is one of Slack's better habits. Anyone who has not used Slack for over 28 days stops being billed, and you get a prorated credit for the unused period. Single-channel guests and bots are free. The credits are not refundable in cash, though; they only offset future charges.

Slack stopped selling the separate AI add-on on its website in 2025. The pricing page card for Free mentions some AI items, but Slack's help article on AI features settles it: Free gets no AI features (apart from a limited Slackbot preview), Pro gets conversation summaries, huddle notes and automatic search filters, and Business+ adds AI search answers, recaps, file summaries, translations, workflow automation and the full Slackbot. Free, Pro and Business+ workspaces linked to a Salesforce org can switch on Salesforce Flex Credits to keep using Slackbot past their plan's limit.

Slack free plan limitations

The free plan is usable for a small team trying things out, but the caps are real:

  • Slack message history: only the last 90 days of messages and files are visible, and data older than one year is deleted.
  • Apps: a maximum of 10 third-party or custom app installs.
  • Huddles: one-to-one only, so no group calls.
  • External work: Slack Connect is limited to DMs; shared channels need a paid plan on both sides.
  • Canvases, lists and workflows: Slack's help article on free-version limits says canvases and lists turn read-only and workflows stop running.

The 90-day window is the limit that bites. Decisions made a quarter ago simply vanish from search, which is why most teams upgrade within a few months.

Slack Pro plan price in India

Slack does not show rupee pricing. Its India (English) pricing page lists the same US dollar rates: $7.25 per active user per month on yearly billing, or $8.75 on monthly billing. Indian buyers pay in USD, so the final card charge moves with the exchange rate, and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee. Check with your accountant on GST treatment for imported services before you budget.

For a 10-person team, Pro on yearly billing works out to $72.50 a month, or $870 a year before taxes and bank charges.

Slack vs Microsoft Teams pricing: the real cost per seat

Microsoft's India page lists rupee prices, all per user per month with yearly billing and GST extra:

  • Teams Essentials: ₹115 ($4 in the US). Chat, meetings for up to 300 people lasting up to 30 hours, and 10 GB of cloud storage per user.
  • Microsoft 365 Business Basic: ₹170 ($7). Teams plus web Office apps, business email and 1 TB of storage per user.
  • Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot: ₹1,955 ($23.50). Adds desktop Office apps.

On raw cost Teams wins clearly. Business Basic costs about the same in dollars as Slack Pro, yet it bundles email, Office and a terabyte of storage. Microsoft also offers a one-month free trial on business plans, though it needs a card. Slack's case rests on the messaging experience itself: cleaner channels, faster search, Slack Connect for client work, and a far deeper app catalogue. If your team spends most of its day in chat and works with many external partners, that difference can justify the premium. If you mostly need meetings and documents, Teams is the cheaper and more complete bundle.

Slack vs Discord

Discord is built for communities: gaming groups, creator fan bases, open-source projects and learning cohorts. It has servers, roles and drop-in voice channels, and members join for free. Slack is built for a company that owns the workspace, with admin controls, data residency on Business+ and a long list of compliance certifications. For a public community, Discord is usually the better and cheaper home. For client work or anything involving business data and retention rules, Slack is the safer pick.

Slack vs Google Chat

Google Chat is included with Google Workspace, so a team already paying for Gmail and Drive gets it at no extra cost. It handles spaces, threads and Meet calls well enough. Slack is more polished for heavy chat use, has a much larger integration catalogue and makes working with outside companies easier through Slack Connect. If chat is a side tool for you, stay with Google Chat. If chat is the centre of your workday, Slack is worth testing.

Privacy, security and commercial use

Slack's privacy principles state that it will not use customer data to train generative AI models unless the customer opts in. The third-party models behind its AI features are hosted on Slack's own cloud provider infrastructure (AWS), and the model providers do not get access to your data. A separate opt-out exists for Slack's older global machine learning models, which power things like channel recommendations.

On compliance, Slack lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701, ISO 42001, and support for GDPR. HIPAA support sits on Enterprise+, and FedRAMP Moderate applies only to Enterprise or Enterprise+ setups. For Indian companies with data localisation needs, Slack offers data residency in Mumbai (with Hyderabad as backup), but only on Business+ and Enterprise plans. Messages and files remain the customer's data, and Slack is meant for commercial use on every tier.

Limitations to weigh before paying

  • No INR billing, so costs shift with the rupee.
  • Per-seat pricing adds up fast for teams above 25 to 30 people.
  • Data residency, SAML single sign-on and advanced AI sit behind Business+.
  • Notification overload is common unless you set channel rules early.

Slack alternatives for small teams

Microsoft Teams Essentials is the lowest-cost option with real video meetings. Google Chat suits teams already on Workspace. Zoho Cliq, from Chennai-based Zoho, is a natural fit for companies on Zoho's suite. Mattermost and Rocket.Chat are open-source tools you can host yourself, useful when data must stay on your own servers. Discord works for communities rather than client-facing teams.

How to get started

Create a free workspace at slack.com with a work email, invite your team (they can use the desktop and mobile apps or simply sign in through a browser at app.slack.com) and set up five or six channels for your main projects. Install the apps you use daily, keeping the 10-app cap in mind. To bring in someone outside your company, use Slack Connect: start a DM with an invite on any plan, or upgrade to share a full channel. Start a huddle by clicking the headphones icon at the top of any channel or DM. If you decide to pay, buy monthly within seven days of creating the team to get the 50% launch discount, then move to yearly billing once the team is settled.

Slack FAQ

What is Slack used for?

Slack is used for team messaging organised into channels, plus huddle calls, shared canvases, workflows and app integrations. Companies use it to replace internal email and to work with clients through Slack Connect.

How much does Slack cost per user?

According to Slack's pricing page, Pro costs $7.25 per active user per month on yearly billing or $8.75 monthly, and Business+ costs $15 yearly or $18 monthly. Enterprise+ is listed at $45 per user per month on annual billing on the US page, while the India page says to contact sales. The Free plan costs nothing.

What are Slack free plan limits?

The free plan shows only the last 90 days of messages and files and deletes data older than one year. It allows up to 10 app installs, and huddles and Slack Connect are limited to one-to-one conversations.

How do you add someone outside your company in Slack?

Use Slack Connect. On any plan you can send a DM invitation to a person at another company. Sharing a full channel requires both organisations to be on a paid plan.

Is Slack secure for business?

Slack lists SOC 2 Type II and several ISO/IEC certifications, including 27001 and 42001, and supports GDPR. Its privacy principles say customer data is not used to train generative AI models without opt-in. Business+ adds SAML single sign-on and data residency, including Mumbai.

Slack vs Teams: which is better?

Teams is cheaper, especially as part of Microsoft 365, which bundles email and Office apps. Slack offers a cleaner chat experience, a larger app catalogue and easier collaboration with outside companies. Pick based on whether chat or the Office bundle matters more.

Slack vs Discord: which is better for communities?

Discord is generally better for public communities because members join free and it is built around servers, roles and voice channels. Slack is better for companies that need admin controls, compliance and business data retention.

How does Slack compare with Google Chat?

Google Chat comes included with Google Workspace, so it adds no cost for Workspace teams. Slack is more refined for heavy messaging use and has far more integrations, but it is a separate per-seat cost.

What are the best Slack alternatives for small teams?

Microsoft Teams Essentials is a low-cost option at ₹115 per user per month on yearly billing in India. Google Chat suits Workspace users, Zoho Cliq suits Zoho customers, and Mattermost or Rocket.Chat suit teams that want to self-host.

How do you use Slack huddles?

Open a channel or DM and click the headphones icon at the top to start a huddle, then use the camera icon to turn on video. Paid plans allow up to 50 participants with 25 on video, and two people can share screens at once.
