Our verdict

4.2out of 5

Discord is the best free home for a public community, with voice rooms, channels, roles and bots that Telegram and Slack's free plan cannot match. Most members never need Nitro. Buy Nitro Basic if 10 MB uploads hold you back, and keep internal company chat on a workplace tool.

What is Discord?

Discord is a free chat app built around group spaces called servers, where people talk over text, voice and video. It started in May 2015 as a chat tool for gamers, and Discord's own company page now reports more than 90 million daily users. This review explains the discord nitro price and benefits from the official Nitro page and help centre, then covers the free tier, Boosts, safety for teens, and how Discord compares with Slack and Telegram for founders and community managers in India.

What Discord is and who uses it

A server is a shared space with its own text channels, voice rooms, member list and permissions. Members join through an invite link, and you can belong to up to 100 servers on a free account.

Gaming is still the core audience. A 2025 user survey cited by the company found that over 90% of users play video games. But plenty of non-gaming groups run on it too: coding communities, design cohorts, crypto projects, creator fan clubs, study groups and open-source teams. For a startup, Discord works best as a public community hub, not as an internal office tool.

The company is Discord Inc., based in San Francisco according to its privacy policy. Humam Sakhnini, formerly Vice Chairman of Activision Blizzard, became CEO in April 2025, and founder Jason Citron moved to the board.

Key features in practice

  • Text channels and discord threads: each channel is a running conversation, and threads let a side topic branch off without cluttering the main feed.
  • Voice channels: drop-in audio rooms. You click and you are in, with no meeting link or scheduling.
  • Go Live and screen share: stream a game, app or browser window to a voice room. A camera-plus-video room caps at 25 people, and a room with screen sharing but no video allows 50.
  • Stage channels: a town-hall format where a few speakers talk and the rest listen. Good for AMAs and product launches.
  • Discord roles: a server can hold 250 roles, which control who sees which channels and who can moderate.
  • Discord bots and apps: moderation, welcome messages, polls, music, ticketing and more, added with a few clicks.
  • Discord overlay: an in-game layer on the desktop app that shows who is talking without alt-tabbing.

Apps are available for Windows (x64 and ARM64), macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus PlayStation, Xbox and Meta Quest, as listed on the download page.

Is Discord free? What the free account gets

Yes. The free account covers almost everything a community needs, including text, voice, video, screen sharing, threads and bots. Discord's caps article lists these free-tier limits:

  • File uploads of 10 MB each.
  • Messages of up to 2,000 characters.
  • Joining up to 100 servers and 1,000 friends.
  • 500 channels per server, including categories.
  • Go Live in servers at 720p and 60fps.
  • 50 custom emoji slots per server (more with Boosts).

For most members of a community, the free tier is enough. Nitro mainly matters to power users, moderators who share large files, and people who want custom emoji across every server they join.

Discord nitro price and benefits, plan by plan

There are two paid tiers for individual accounts. The official Nitro page lists them at $2.99 a month for Nitro Basic and $9.99 a month for Nitro. The help centre says both can be bought monthly or yearly, and the yearly price is shown inside the app at checkout. Discord also states that cost varies by country.

Server Boosts includedNoneNone2, plus 30% off extra Boosts

Nitro Basic is the cheap upgrade. The Nitro help article lists 50 MB uploads, custom emoji and stickers in any server, Super Reactions, custom video backgrounds, custom app icons and a Basic badge. Full Nitro adds the bigger extras. Those include 2 Boosts, longer messages, 300+ stickers, profile customisation, monthly Orbs for Quest rewards, 10 hours of cloud gaming a month and a set of Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition games (availability varies by region).

A note on uploads: the Nitro page and the Nitro help article (last updated 29 September 2026) both say up to 1 GB. Discord's caps article, last updated 2 March 2026, still shows 500 MB. The newer article wins, so treat 1 GB as the current figure.

Discord nitro price in India

India is not on Discord's localized pricing list. The help article covers 17 countries, among them Brazil, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, Korea, Australia and, since April 2026, Great Britain and Canada, plus euro pricing in 30 European countries. Where no local price exists, the article says the charge is made in US dollars.

In practice, Indian users pay the dollar price, so $2.99 or $9.99 a month, charged in USD to an international-enabled card. Your bank may add a foreign transaction fee and converts at its own rate, so the rupee amount on your statement will move with the exchange rate. Check User Settings, then Nitro, for the exact figure Discord shows on your account before you subscribe.

Discord server boost levels explained

Boosts are paid upgrades for a whole server rather than for one person. Members buy them and assign them to a server, and the server gets perks for everyone. The price per Boost appears in the app and varies by country, while Nitro subscribers get 2 free Boosts and 30% off any extra ones.

LevelBoosts neededMain perks
Level 12100 emoji slots, 128 Kbps audio, 720p 60fps streams, animated server icon
Level 27150 emoji slots, 256 Kbps audio, 1080p 60fps streams, 50 MB uploads for all members, server banner
Level 314250 emoji slots, 384 Kbps audio, 100 MB uploads for all members, animated banner, custom invite link

For a brand community, Level 2 is often the sweet spot. It lifts every member's upload cap to 50 MB without anyone needing a personal subscription.

Discord vs Slack for communities and teams

Slack is built for paid workplaces. Its free plan keeps only 90 days of message and file history and allows up to 10 apps. Pro costs $7.25 per user a month on yearly billing ($8.75 monthly), and Business+ is $15 per user ($18 monthly), per Slack's pricing page.

Discord charges nothing per member. A community of 5,000 people costs nothing to run on Discord, while the same group on Slack Pro would cost thousands of dollars a month. For an open community, the choice is easy.

For an internal team, Slack has the edge: SAML-based SSO, SCIM provisioning, full message exports and data residency (including a Mumbai region on Business+). Discord's plans do not list any of these controls. Use Slack for your company and Discord for your customers.

Discord vs Telegram

Telegram is phone-first. According to its FAQ, groups hold up to 200,000 members, channels can have unlimited subscribers, and files go up to 2 GB (4 GB with Premium). Group calls support up to 200 participants.

Discord's advantage is structure. One server can hold dozens of topic channels, permanent voice rooms, stage events, role-based access and bots, which a single Telegram group cannot match. Telegram is better for one-way broadcasts and for audiences that mostly live on mobile. Encryption differs too. Telegram's cloud chats use server-client encryption, while Secret Chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted. Since May 2026, Discord says every voice and video call (DMs, group DMs, voice channels and Go Live) is end-to-end encrypted by default with its open DAVE protocol. Stage channels are the exception, and text messages are not end-to-end encrypted.

Discord vs TeamSpeak and other alternatives

TeamSpeak focuses on voice and lets you run a server on your own hardware or rent one through its official community platform. That self-hosting control suits esports teams and privacy-minded clans, but it has far less text, community and bot tooling than Discord. Other alternatives to weigh are Slack for workplaces, Telegram for broadcast-style groups, and Microsoft Teams if your company is already on Microsoft 365.

Safety, age rules and privacy

You must be at least 13 to use Discord, and some countries set the bar as high as 16. Accounts found to be underage are permanently suspended. On 9 February 2026 Discord announced teen-by-default settings for new and existing users worldwide. They blur sensitive media, send DMs from unfamiliar people to a separate inbox, add warnings on friend requests and keep age-restricted channels and servers closed until an adult confirms their age. Discord has since changed its approach: an age estimation model places most users in an age group automatically, and only adults who want age-restricted content need to confirm it. When an ID is used, Discord says its vendors delete it, usually right after the check.

Is Discord safe for kids? It is safer than it was, and parents get a Family Center tool plus a downloadable Parent's Guide. Still, open servers bring contact with strangers, so younger teens need supervision and tight privacy settings.

On data, the privacy policy states that Discord does not sell personal information and generally does not store the contents of voice or video calls. There are no business-grade compliance plans, so do not use it for confidential client work.

Limitations to know before paying

  • No rupee pricing; you pay in dollars with possible bank fees.
  • No admin console, SSO or data exports for companies.
  • Busy servers get noisy, and moderation takes real effort.
  • Many Nitro perks are cosmetic, and gaming extras are region-dependent.

How to get started

Making a server: click the plus icon in the left sidebar, choose a template or start from scratch, name it and add an icon. Create a few channels (announcements, general, help), set up roles, and then share an invite link.

Adding bots: open the bot's official invite link from its website or Discord's app listing, pick a server you manage, and approve the permissions it requests. Grant only what the bot actually needs, since a bot with admin rights can delete channels.

If Discord is stuck on Connecting: restart your router and computer, check discordstatus.com for outages, allowlist Discord in your firewall or antivirus, and turn off any VPN that does not support UDP. Server admins can also change the voice region from the channel settings, and an India voice region exists.

Start free, run your server for a month, and buy Nitro Basic only if the 10 MB upload limit gets in your way.

Discord FAQ

Is Discord free?

Yes. Text, voice, video, screen sharing, threads and bots are all free. The free tier limits uploads to 10 MB, messages to 2,000 characters and server joins to 100. Nitro Basic and Nitro are optional paid add-ons.

How much is Discord Nitro in India?

India is not on Discord's localized pricing list, so purchases fall back to US dollars: $2.99 a month for Nitro Basic and $9.99 a month for Nitro. Your bank converts the charge to rupees and may add a foreign transaction fee. Check User Settings, then Nitro, for the exact price shown on your account.

Is Discord safe for kids?

Discord requires users to be at least 13, or older in some countries. It has teen-by-default settings such as blurred sensitive media and a separate inbox for DMs from strangers, plus a Family Center tool for parents. Open servers still mean contact with strangers, so younger teens need supervision.

How do you make a Discord server?

Click the plus icon in the server list, choose a template or start from scratch, then name the server and add an icon. Create a few channels and roles, and share an invite link. It takes about a minute and is free.

How do you add bots to Discord?

Open the bot's official invite link from its website or Discord's app listing, choose a server you manage and approve the permissions it requests. Give the bot only the permissions it needs.

Discord vs Slack: which is better for communities?

Discord is better for open communities because it has no per-member cost. Slack Pro costs $7.25 per user a month on yearly billing and its free plan keeps only 90 days of history. Slack is the better pick for internal company chat with SSO and compliance needs.

Discord vs Telegram: which should you choose?

Telegram suits broadcast channels and mobile-first groups, with groups of up to 200,000 members and 2 GB file uploads. Discord suits structured communities with many topic channels, voice rooms, roles and bots. Many brands use Telegram for announcements and Discord for discussion.

Discord vs TeamSpeak: what is the difference?

TeamSpeak focuses on voice and lets you host a server on your own hardware or rent one through its official platform. Discord offers voice plus text channels, threads, stage events, roles and bots in one free app. TeamSpeak suits groups that want self-hosted voice control.

What are the best Discord alternatives?

Slack and Microsoft Teams are better for workplace chat. Telegram works for large broadcast-style groups. TeamSpeak is an option for self-hosted voice chat.

Why is Discord stuck on connecting?

Discord's help centre lists network causes: restart your router and computer, check discordstatus.com for outages, allowlist Discord in your firewall or antivirus, and use only a VPN that supports UDP. Work and college networks may block Discord, and server admins can try a different voice region.
