Our verdict
Shopify is the safest hosted choice for Indian brands that plan to grow, with fair INR plan prices and the largest app ecosystem. The catch is the third-party gateway fee, since Shopify Payments is not offered in India. Very small sellers may find WooCommerce or a marketplace cheaper.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Shopify?
Shopify is a hosted store builder from Shopify Inc., a Canadian company that has run the platform since 2006. This review explains shopify pricing plans india in rupees as listed on the Indian pricing page in October 2026, what each tier actually adds, how payments work for Indian sellers, and where cheaper or more flexible options make more sense. Everything below comes from Shopify's own pricing page and help centre unless we say otherwise.
What Shopify is and who should pay for it
You get a complete online shop without touching a server. Hosting, SSL, checkout, inventory, discount codes, shipping rules and order management all sit in one admin panel, and the same panel runs the Android and iOS apps. A D2C brand selling skincare from Jaipur, a print-on-demand seller in Pune and an agency building stores for clients can all start from the same dashboard.
It suits founders who want to launch fast and grow without migrating later. It is a poor fit for someone who sells five products a month, because the fixed monthly fee plus app costs can eat most of the margin.
Key features in practice
- Shopify themes: a theme store with free and paid designs, editable through a drag-and-drop editor. Most Indian stores start on a free theme and customise colours, fonts and sections.
- Shopify apps: the App Store lists over 13,000 apps, according to Shopify. Indian sellers usually add apps for WhatsApp alerts, COD verification, GST invoices and shipping aggregators like Shiprocket.
- Shopify Flow: a free automation tool on every plan from Basic to Plus. You can tag high-value customers, hide out-of-stock products or alert your team about risky orders. The HTTP request action needs Grow or above.
- Shopify POS: casual in-person selling at pop-ups and exhibitions is included on all plans. POS Pro, with staff roles and in-store inventory, costs ₹7,000 per location per month.
- Shopify Magic AI and Sidekick: built-in AI that writes product descriptions, edits product photos, drafts marketing copy and answers setup questions. The pricing page lists Sidekick as part of every plan, Basic included.
- Shopify Collective: lets a retailer list products from other Shopify suppliers without holding stock. The pricing page shows it on all four plans, but read Shopify's Collective requirements to see whether an Indian store qualifies before you plan around it.
Shopify pricing plans india in rupees, tier by tier
Prices on shopify.com/in are shown in INR. Paying yearly cuts roughly 25% off each standard plan.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Yearly billing (per month) | Third-party gateway fee | Extra staff accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ₹1,994 | ₹1,499 | 2% | None |
| Grow | ₹7,447 | ₹5,599 | 1% | 5 |
| Advanced | ₹30,164 | ₹22,680 | 0.6% | 15 |
| Plus | From ₹1,75,000 | 1- or 3-year terms | 0.2% | Unlimited |
The Shopify Basic plan on yearly billing works out to ₹17,988 a year, against ₹23,928 if you pay month to month. That ₹5,940 gap is real money for a new brand. Shopify says there are no setup fees on any plan.
Shopify Plus is the enterprise tier. According to the pricing page it adds unlimited staff accounts, 20 POS Pro locations and the lowest third-party fee (0.2%), on a 1- or 3-year commitment. It only makes sense for brands doing several crores a year in online sales.
GST: the pricing page does not say whether the rupee prices include tax. Shopify's terms of service state that any taxes on your subscription are charged in addition to the fees, so budget for GST on top and check the tax line on your first bill. Billing itself can be set to INR and paid by card or UPI autopay, according to Shopify India's blog. Separately, Shopify's India GST help page says the platform does not produce GST-compliant bills for your orders, so most stores add an invoicing app.
Shopify free trial: what the 3 dollars figure means
The 3 dollars figure comes from a US introductory price, where the first few paid months after the trial were billed at a token amount. Shopify changes these intro prices from time to time and sets them separately for each country, so this review does not treat them as plan prices. What stays the same is a short free trial, after which the normal monthly plan price applies.
Budget from the list prices on this page, not from any intro rate shown at signup. The trial is enough to pick a theme, add a few products and click through checkout, but a full catalogue with a live gateway usually takes longer, so expect to be on a paid plan by launch day.
Shopify Payments India availability
Shopify's own processor is not offered here. Its help centre lists 41 supported countries for Shopify Payments, including the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan, and India is not on that list. Indian stores must use a third-party provider instead.
In practice that means gateways such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or CCAvenue. Each one documents its own Shopify app: Razorpay's is now called All-in-one Razorpay Payment Gateway, Cashfree lists 1Cashfree, and CCAvenue has a listing on the Shopify App Store. Razorpay and Cashfree both support UPI, cards, net banking and wallets through these apps. Cash on delivery can be switched on as a manual payment method. Each gateway charges its own processing fee, and Shopify adds its own cut on top, which is the next point.
Shopify transaction fees and how to reduce them
Because Indian merchants cannot use Shopify's processor, every online order attracts the third-party fee in the table above. That fee is charged by Shopify, separately from your gateway's charges.
Here is a simple example. A store doing ₹4 lakh a month through Razorpay pays ₹8,000 to Shopify on Basic (2%) and ₹4,000 on Grow (1%). On yearly billing Grow costs ₹4,100 more per month than Basic, so the upgrade pays for itself at around ₹4.1 lakh in monthly online sales. Below that, stay on Basic.
- Pay yearly once you are sure the business will run for 12 months.
- Move up a plan only when your monthly sales cross the break-even point.
- Track which apps you really use, since app subscriptions often cost more than the plan.
- Compare gateway rates, because the gateway's own fee is the bigger slice.
What a first year really costs
The plan price is only one line in the budget. Take a small apparel brand on Basic, billed yearly, selling ₹2 lakh a month online. The plan comes to ₹17,988 for the year before GST. The 2% third-party fee on ₹24 lakh of annual sales adds ₹48,000. Then add your gateway's own processing charges, a domain (usually under ₹1,500 a year) and two or three paid apps for reviews, COD checks and invoices.
As a rough estimate, that store should budget ₹80,000 to ₹1 lakh in platform-related costs in year one, excluding gateway charges and marketing. None of this is hidden, but the headline ₹1,499 figure leaves most of it out.
Which plan should you pick?
- Basic: new stores, solo founders and anyone under roughly ₹4 lakh in monthly online sales.
- Grow: teams that need staff logins and stores where the lower 1% fee covers the higher plan price.
- Advanced: brands with large order volumes, several staff and a need for custom reports.
- Plus: enterprise brands, multi-store setups and companies that need checkout changes and dedicated help.
For developers, Shopify exposes a GraphQL Admin API (version 2026-10 is the latest stable release on its changelog), webhooks and a CLI for building custom apps and storefronts. Free development stores let agencies build for clients before the client pays for a plan.
Free vs paid limits
There is no free plan after the trial ends. The cheapest tier still includes unlimited products, the online store, checkout, discount codes, abandoned cart emails, Flow and basic reports. What Basic lacks is extra staff accounts and lower gateway fees, and Advanced adds custom report building and the lowest standard rate.
Shopify vs WooCommerce, Wix and Etsy
WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin, so you pay for hosting, a domain, premium plugins and someone to maintain updates. It charges no platform fee on sales, which matters for high-volume stores, but security and speed become your problem. Shopify costs more each month and takes a gateway cut in India, yet you never patch a server.
Wix is easier for a brochure site that also sells a few items, though its app store and checkout tools are smaller. Etsy is a marketplace rather than a store builder: buyers already visit Etsy, but you pay listing and per-sale fees and you do not own the customer relationship. Many handmade sellers use Etsy to find buyers and Shopify to build a brand.
Dropshipping from India
Dropshipping works on Shopify through supplier apps, and Indian sellers often pair it with domestic suppliers to keep delivery times short. Remember the 2% fee on Basic and COD return rates when you calculate margins, because thin-margin products can turn loss-making quickly.
Is Shopify safe and legit?
Shopify is a listed company, and it says businesses on the platform have made over $1 trillion in total sales. Stores run on HTTPS with a PCI-compliant checkout, and there is a public status page at shopifystatus.com. Its privacy policy explains that Shopify acts as a processor for the customer data your store collects. You keep ownership of your content and customer data and can export products and orders as CSV files.
Limitations to know before paying
- No local processor, so Indian stores always pay the third-party fee.
- Useful apps add monthly costs, often billed in USD.
- Showing local-currency prices to overseas buyers requires Shopify Payments, according to the pricing page, so Indian exporters lose that feature.
- Theme code changes need Liquid knowledge.
How to start a Shopify store step by step
- Sign up on shopify.com/in for the free trial.
- Pick a free theme and add your logo, colours and policies.
- Add products with photos, prices, SKUs and GST tax settings.
- Connect a gateway such as Razorpay and enable COD if needed.
- Set shipping zones and link a shipping app.
- Buy or connect a domain, pick a plan and take a live test order.
Best alternatives
Consider WooCommerce if you want full control and no platform fee, Wix for small catalogues, Indian builders such as Dukaan if you want simpler rupee billing, and BigCommerce if you need strong B2B tools on a hosted platform.

Shopify FAQ
How much does Shopify cost in India?
According to shopify.com/in/pricing in October 2026, Basic costs ₹1,994 a month (₹1,499 a month billed yearly), Grow ₹7,447 (₹5,599 yearly), and Advanced ₹30,164 (₹22,680 yearly). Plus starts at ₹1,75,000 a month. Shopify's terms say taxes are charged on top of fees, so check the GST line on your first bill.
Is Shopify Payments available in India?
No. Shopify's help centre lists 41 supported countries for its own processor and India is not one of them. Indian stores connect a third-party gateway instead, and Shopify charges a plan-based fee on those transactions.
How do I start a Shopify store step by step?
Sign up for the free trial, choose a theme, add products and GST tax settings, connect a gateway such as Razorpay, set shipping zones, then connect a domain and pick a plan. After that, place a live test order before launching.
Can I use Shopify for dropshipping in India?
Yes. Dropshipping runs through supplier apps from the Shopify App Store, and many Indian sellers use domestic suppliers for faster delivery. Factor in the 2% third-party fee on Basic and COD returns when pricing products.
Is Shopify safe and legit?
Yes. Shopify Inc. is a publicly listed Canadian company, its checkout is PCI compliant, and it runs a public status page. You can export your products, customers and orders as CSV files if you leave.
Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Wix: which is better?
Shopify is the easiest way to run a serious hosted store but has monthly and gateway fees. WooCommerce is free software with no platform fee, though you pay for hosting and maintenance. Wix suits small catalogues attached to a simple website.
Shopify vs Etsy: which is better for sellers?
Etsy is a marketplace that brings buyers to you but charges listing and per-sale fees and keeps the customer relationship. Shopify gives you your own branded store and customer data, but you must bring your own traffic. Many sellers use both.
Which payment gateways work with Shopify in India?
Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and CCAvenue all offer Shopify integrations, documented on their own sites or on the Shopify App Store, and Razorpay and Cashfree support UPI, cards, net banking and wallets. Cash on delivery can be added as a manual payment method. Each gateway charges its own processing fee, and Shopify adds its plan-based third-party fee.
What are the best Shopify alternatives?
WooCommerce suits sellers who want full control and no platform fee. Wix works for small catalogues, BigCommerce for B2B-heavy stores, and Indian builders like Dukaan for simpler rupee billing.
How can I reduce Shopify transaction fees?
Move to a higher plan once your sales cross the break-even point, since the third-party fee drops from 2% on Basic to 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. Pay yearly to save about 25% on the plan, compare gateway rates and cut apps you do not use.
