Our verdict
Ecwid is the cheapest sensible way to add a real store to a website you already own, with Indian pricing from ₹450 a month and no platform fee on Razorpay. Most sellers will need Venture for Instagram selling and Business for abandoned cart emails. Brands planning big catalogues or heavy customisation should look at Shopify or WooCommerce instead.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Ecwid?
For years the selling point was a store that cost nothing, and that is gone: the cheapest Ecwid plan on the official pricing page is now Starter at $5 a month (₹450 in India), capped at 10 products. This Ecwid ecommerce plugin review and pricing guide looks at what that change means for small Indian sellers, bloggers and agencies who want to add store to existing website pages without rebuilding the site on Shopify or WooCommerce. Ecwid, owned by Lightspeed since October 2021, still does one thing better than most rivals. You build the catalogue once and drop it into WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, a plain HTML page or its own Instant Site, and it also feeds Facebook, Instagram and Google from the same dashboard.
Ecwid free plan limits: what replaced the $0 tier
Older blog posts still describe a Free plan with 5 products. New sign-ups no longer see it. The pricing page lists four paid tiers, and Starter has quietly taken the free slot: 10 products, 70+ site templates, a store on a company.site subdomain, the embed code for any external site and email-only support. There is no annual discount on Starter, so it is $5 (or ₹450) every month either way.
What Starter leaves out matters more than the price. Selling on Facebook and Instagram, the mobile admin app, discount coupons, automated tax, a custom domain and access to the App Market all begin at Venture. For a home baker in Pune testing five cake boxes, Starter is enough. For anyone who plans to run Instagram ads into a catalogue, it is a waiting room before the first upgrade. Registered nonprofits can ask for six months of Venture at no cost, according to the pricing FAQ.
Ecwid by Lightspeed pricing plans in dollars and rupees
Ecwid shows six currencies on the same page, and Indian visitors get rupee prices that are well below a straight dollar conversion. The rupee figures below come from the India version of the pricing page; the page does not label each currency in text, so confirm the amount and any GST at checkout. Annual billing is labelled "save 16%", though the real saving varies by plan.
| Plan | Monthly (USD / INR) | Billed yearly, per month | Product limit per plan | Main additions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $5 / ₹450 | $5 / ₹450 | 10 | Templates, embed anywhere, email support |
| Venture | $35 / ₹1,680 | $29 / ₹1,399 | 100 | Facebook and Instagram, coupons, app, live chat, App Market |
| Business | $65 / ₹2,999 | $49 / ₹2,499 | 2,500 | Marketplaces, subscriptions, abandoned cart emails, 2 staff, phone support |
| Unlimited | $149 / ₹7,799 | $119 / ₹6,399 | No cap | POS integration, unlimited staff, priority support |
Ecwid charges no transaction fee of its own on any plan. You still pay your gateway, so a Razorpay or PayU account in India will take its usual cut per order. Domain registration, paid apps from the App Market and any GST added at checkout sit on top of the plan price. Budget for those before comparing sticker prices.
How the Ecwid WordPress plugin drops a store into an existing site
The ecwid wordpress plugin on wordpress.org (version 7.0.10 at the time of writing) has 20,000+ active installs and a 4.5 rating from 228 reviews. Setup takes four moves: install it from Plugins, activate it, open the Ecwid Store menu, then either create an account or connect an existing store. The plugin creates a Store page automatically and adds ten Gutenberg blocks for product grids, a cart, buy buttons and checkout. Your products, orders and images live on Ecwid's servers, not in your WordPress database, so a cheap shared host is not slowed down by a 2,000-item catalogue.
The same widget code works on other builders. That is the real reason agencies keep recommending Ecwid. A client on Wix today and on a custom React site next year keeps one catalogue, one order history and one admin. Migration tools import products from WooCommerce, Shopify and BigCommerce if you are moving the other way.
Ecwid Instant Site, for sellers with no website yet
If there is no site to embed into, ecwid instant site gives you a hosted storefront with drag-in blocks for promo carousels, testimonials, a contact map and a brand story. Ecwid claims you can launch in under 30 minutes, and the template library covers apparel, food, digital goods and services. You get a free company.site address on every plan. Paying for your own domain inside Ecwid needs Venture, though an existing domain can be connected. It is a tidy one-page or few-page shop, not a full content site: if you plan to publish a long blog alongside the store, WordPress plus the plugin is the better pairing.
Selling on Instagram, Facebook and Google from one catalogue
The homepage lists Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Google, Pinterest, Snapchat and Amazon among the channels you can connect. To sell on facebook and instagram you need Venture or higher; marketplace listings start at Business. This ecwid multichannel selling setup pushes product updates out from the dashboard, and orders from those channels come back into the same order list. For an Indian D2C label that gets most of its traffic from Reels, this is the feature worth paying for. Product photo tools with AI background removal are also built in, which saves a Canva step for small catalogues.
Where Venture falls short and Business starts paying off
Three features push growing stores to Business. First, ecwid abandoned cart emails: automatic reminders to shoppers who leave at checkout are not included on Venture. Second, the product limit jumps from 100 to 2,500, which suits a stationery or spares shop with many variants. Third, staff accounts appear (two of them), along with wholesale price groups, product reviews, subscriptions and a multilingual storefront. If your catalogue is under 100 items and you are the only person handling orders, Venture at ₹1,399 a month on annual billing is the sweet spot.
Shipping, POS and the Square question in India
The plugin listing says real-time ecwid shipping rates come from USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post and Australia Post. None of those helps a seller dispatching from Jaipur, so Indian stores usually set flat or weight-based rates, free shipping thresholds and local pickup, and draw delivery zones by PIN code using wildcards. Integrations with Indian courier aggregators depend on third-party apps; check the App Market before you commit.
For in-person sales, ecwid pos covers two routes. The Unlimited plan adds the Lightspeed Retail POS integration, and the mobile app can accept cash and card payments at a market stall (in-person payments are iOS only per the POS page). The ecwid square integration syncs products with a Square catalogue, but Square lists it only for the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, Japan, France and Spain. Square itself does not operate in India, so ignore it if you sell here.
Ecwid vs Shopify for a 50-product catalogue
Take a seller with 50 SKUs and an Instagram following. On Ecwid, Venture covers that for ₹1,399 a month billed yearly, with zero platform fee on Razorpay orders. On Shopify India, the Basic plan is ₹1,499 a month on yearly billing (₹1,994 monthly), and stores using a third-party gateway such as Razorpay pay an extra 2% per order since Shopify Payments is not available in India. At ₹3 lakh a month in sales, that 2% is ₹6,000, which is more than either plan.
| Factor | Ecwid Venture | Shopify Basic (India) |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price (yearly billing) | ₹1,399 | ₹1,499 |
| Product cap | 100 | Unlimited |
| Third-party gateway fee | 0% | 2% |
| Works inside an existing site | Yes, any builder | Buy Button only |
| App ecosystem | App Market, smaller | 13,000+ apps |
Shopify wins on themes, apps, checkout polish and the number of Indian agencies that know it. Ecwid wins on cost for small catalogues and on embedding. If you are building a brand-first store from scratch and expect to scale past 2,500 products, Shopify is the safer long-term bet.
Is there a better Ecwid alternative for WordPress?
WooCommerce is the obvious one. The core plugin is free, keeps all data in your own database and has native Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU plugins. The trade-off is upkeep: you handle hosting, updates, backups and security yourself, and paid extensions add up. Ecwid suits WordPress owners who want a store without becoming store administrators. Other names to look at are Shopify's Buy Button, Wix eCommerce if you are open to switching builders, and Squarespace Commerce for design-led brands selling abroad.
Payments, PCI compliance and who holds your data
Card security is handled through gateways, and the WordPress plugin page describes Ecwid as PCI DSS Level 1 certified, the highest level for merchants processing cards. Ecwid has integration pages for Razorpay and PayU (its gateway list also names PayUbiz and Cashfree), and its payments pages claim over 100 supported providers worldwide. Store data is processed under Lightspeed's privacy policy (effective 8 July 2026), which says end-customer data is handled on behalf of merchants. Lightspeed's service agreement (last updated February 2026) names Ecwid, Inc. as the worldwide contracting entity for its eCom product, with Delaware law and venue. The privacy policy says data may be stored in the US, Canada or other countries and says nothing about hosting in India, so sellers who need local storage should ask before signing up.
Why an Ecwid store sometimes does not show on a website
Most "blank store" complaints trace back to a short list. A caching or JavaScript optimisation plugin may be delaying or combining Ecwid's script; exclude it from minification. The Store page may have lost its block or shortcode after a theme change. The embed code might point to an old store ID. And if a paid plan lapsed, the storefront can stop loading. Ecwid's status page at status.ecwid.com is worth checking first so you do not chase a fault that is on their side.
Where the Ecwid ecommerce plugin review and pricing math lands for Indian sellers
Ecwid is a sensible pick for creators, small brands and agencies who already have a website and want to bolt on a catalogue for under ₹1,500 a month. It is less convincing for stores with large catalogues, India-specific shipping automation or heavy customisation needs. A practical start: open a Starter store, add a handful of products, connect Razorpay in test mode and embed the store on a staging page. Upgrade to Venture only when you need Instagram selling or coupons, and to Business when abandoned cart emails or a second staff login become worth ₹1,100 more a month.

Ecwid FAQ
What is Ecwid?
Ecwid is a hosted ecommerce platform, owned by Lightspeed since October 2021, that lets you build a product catalogue once and place it on any website, its own Instant Site, and social channels such as Facebook and Instagram. Orders from every channel arrive in one dashboard.
Is Ecwid free to use?
Not any more for new stores. The official pricing page lists no $0 plan; the cheapest tier is Starter at $5 a month (₹450 in India). The WordPress plugin itself is free to install, but it needs an Ecwid plan to run a store.
How many products can you add on the Ecwid free plan?
The old Free plan allowed 5 products and has been retired. Its replacement, Starter, allows 10 products for $5 a month, and Venture raises the limit to 100.
How do you add an Ecwid store to WordPress?
Install the Ecwid plugin from Plugins > Add New, activate it and open the Ecwid Store menu to create or connect an account. The plugin creates a Store page and adds Gutenberg blocks for product grids, buy buttons and the cart.
Is Ecwid safe for payments?
Ecwid's official WordPress listing and its WordPress page describe the checkout as PCI DSS Level 1 certified. Card details are handled by the gateway you connect, such as Razorpay, PayU, Stripe or PayPal, rather than stored on your own website.
Ecwid vs Shopify: which is better for a small business?
For a catalogue under 100 products, Ecwid Venture (₹1,399 a month billed yearly) is cheaper and charges no fee on third-party gateways, while Shopify Basic adds 2% per order in India when you use Razorpay. Shopify is stronger on themes, apps and scaling past a few thousand products.
Does Ecwid work in India?
Yes. The India pricing page shows rupee prices starting at ₹450 a month and has integration pages for Razorpay and PayU. Its built-in live carrier rates cover US, Canadian and Australian carriers, so Indian sellers usually set flat or zone-based shipping rates instead.
What are the best Ecwid alternatives?
WooCommerce is the main option for WordPress owners who want full control and no platform fee. Shopify suits brands planning a large standalone store, while Wix eCommerce and Squarespace Commerce fit sellers happy to build the whole site on one builder.
Why is my Ecwid store not showing on my website?
Common causes are caching or script-optimisation plugins delaying Ecwid's JavaScript, a Store page that lost its block or shortcode, an embed code with the wrong store ID, or a lapsed paid plan. Check status.ecwid.com first, then exclude Ecwid's script from minification.
Who is Ecwid best for?
Ecwid suits small sellers, creators and agencies who already have a website on WordPress, Wix or another builder and want to add a store without migrating. It also fits Instagram-first brands with catalogues under 2,500 products.
