Our verdict
Runway is one of the most complete AI video tools available, pairing Gen-4.5 generation with Aleph 2.0 editing and Act-Two performance capture. Standard is fine for testing ideas, but serious users will need Pro or Max because credits drain quickly. Check the training clause in the terms before uploading confidential client footage.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Runway?
Runway is a browser-based AI video studio from Runway AI, Inc., the New York company founded in 2018 by Cristóbal Valenzuela, Alejandro Matamala and Anastasis Germanidis. It turns text prompts, still images and recorded performances into short clips, and it can also edit footage you already have. This review explains Runway Gen-4.5 video generation credits and pricing in plain numbers, so you can work out what a month of clips will really cost before you enter card details.
A quick status note first. The site now redirects from runwayml.com to runway.com. The Unlimited plan was replaced by a new Max plan on 1 June 2026, and the older Gen-3 Alpha family was retired in July 2026. Everything below is checked against Runway's own pricing page, help center and developer docs as of October 2026.
What Runway ML is used for, and who it suits
Most people use it for three jobs: generating new shots from a prompt or a reference image, editing real footage with AI, and animating a character from an actor's performance. Typical users are YouTubers making B-roll and social cuts, agencies building concept films, indie filmmakers testing scenes, and developers who want video generation inside their own product through the API.
It is a weaker fit for someone who needs long finished videos with no editing, or for a team that wants a fixed rupee price. Clips are short. The flagship model makes 2 to 10 seconds per text prompt, and you stitch the pieces together yourself.
Key features in practice
- Gen-4.5: the current flagship for text to video and image to video. The help center lists 720p output at 24 or 25 fps, with six aspect ratios for image input, from 9:16 vertical to 21:9.
- Gen-4 and its Turbo variant: the previous generation, still documented. Both need an input image. Turbo is the budget option at 5 credits per second.
- Aleph 2.0: a video-to-video editor inside Edit Studio. You describe a change ("make the sneakers red", "remove the items on the wall") and it rewrites the clip while keeping the rest of the shot.
- Act-Two: performance capture. A video of you acting drives a character image or video, carrying over facial expression, gestures and lip sync.
- Image models: stills cost 8 credits each at 1080p, or 2 credits on the Turbo image model.
- Audio: text to speech at 1 credit per 50 characters, plus music, voice and sound effects on paid plans.
- Frame interpolation: builds a smooth clip from a set of stills, with up to 10 seconds per image.
- Upscaling: 4K upscaling on Standard, and unlimited 4K video upscaling on Pro and Max.
Two old favourites are gone. Motion Brush was a Gen-2 feature, and Runway's Gen-2 deprecation page confirms it does not work on newer models. Act-One, which ran on Gen-3 Alpha, now carries a "no longer available" notice. Runway now points users to written prompts instead.
Runway Gen-4.5 video generation credits and pricing explained
Every paid plan gives a monthly pool of credits, and each model burns credits per second of output. According to the pricing page and help docs, the flagship and plain Gen-4 cost 12 credits per second, the Turbo model and Act-Two cost 5, and Aleph 2.0 costs 28. Exporting flagship clips as ProRes or PNG sequences adds 5 credits a second on Max and Enterprise.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly (per month) | Credits | Flagship seconds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 125, one time | Limited model set |
| Standard | $15 | $12 | 625 a month | About 52 |
| Pro | $35 | $28 | 2,250 a month | About 187 |
| Max | $95 | $76 | 9,500 a month | About 791 |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Contact sales | Custom | Custom |
Put simply, Standard buys under a minute of top-tier footage a month. The Turbo model goes further, though Runway's numbers disagree slightly: the help center and API docs say 5 credits a second, while the pricing page's own example turns 625 credits into 104 seconds of Turbo. Plan around the lower figure. Pro adds 15 parallel generations, one brand kit, one custom voice clone and the option to top up credits at any time. Max adds early model access, studio formats such as HDR and ProRes, up to 10 projects, 500GB of storage and a one-month rollover of unused credits.
On Standard and Pro, credits reset each cycle and do not carry over. Extra credits come in purchases of at least 1,000 and never expire. Runway publishes no INR prices, so you pay in US dollars and the rupee figure on your statement moves with the exchange rate plus whatever foreign transaction fee your bank adds.
What happened to Unlimited and Explore Mode
Older reviews praise the $95 Unlimited plan for Explore Mode, which allowed unlimited generations at a relaxed speed on top of 2,250 credits. Runway stopped selling Unlimited on 1 June 2026. Its help center says Max replaces it with 9,500 credits (roughly four times the old allowance) but without Explore Mode, so every Max generation spends credits. Eligible legacy Unlimited accounts keep their terms until 30 November 2026. After that, monthly subscribers move to Max at the same $95 price unless they cancel.
Runway free plan credits and limits
The Free plan gives 125 credits once. They do not expire, but they never refill either, and you cannot buy more without upgrading. The help center says Free accounts get a limited set of tools that changes over time, 5GB of storage and a Runway watermark on every video. Standard is the cheapest way to remove the watermark and open up all image and video models. Treat it as a test drive, not a way to produce client work.
Runway Gen-4.5 prompts that work
Prompt guides written for Gen-3 Alpha Turbo are now history, since that model was retired on 30 July 2026. With the current flagship, a good habit is to describe motion rather than the picture. When you upload a reference image, the picture already sets the look, so spend your words on what moves, what the camera does and how fast things happen. A simple structure:
- Subject action: "the cyclist pedals uphill, standing on the pedals"
- Camera: "slow handheld tracking shot from the side"
- Atmosphere: "dust lifts off the road, late afternoon light"
Keep each prompt to a single shot. If you work from a still, test composition cheaply on the Turbo model first, then render the keeper on the flagship.
Runway Act-Two: how to use it
Act-Two sits under Apps as "Performance Capture with Act-Two" and needs Standard or higher. The help center workflow runs like this:
- Record or upload a driving video of a person acting out the scene.
- Add a character image or a character video.
- If your character is an image, decide whether gestures should carry over (the option does not exist for character videos), then set facial expressiveness. The default is 3. Higher values add expression but can introduce artifacts.
- Check the credit cost in the duration window and generate.
Performances run up to 30 seconds at 5 credits a second, with a 3-second minimum. Runway's multi-character dialogue guide adds that Aleph is not built for mouth movement, so if an edit breaks the dialogue you may need to run the clip through Act-Two again.
Runway vs Sora, Kling and Veo
The Sora comparison has changed completely. OpenAI's help center says the Sora web and app experiences closed on 26 April 2026, and the Sora API was scheduled to shut down on 24 September 2026. So the real choice today is between Runway and the rivals that remain.
Google Veo: Google sells video generation through its consumer AI plans. Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) includes a limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite and 1,000 Flow credits, while Ultra (from $99.99) gives the highest Veo 3.1 access. Runway's own API also offers Veo 3.1, at 40 credits a second with audio or 20 without.
Kling: Kling's credit policy sets a standard rate of 66 credits per dollar, refunds credits for failed generations and keeps purchased credits valid for two years.
Runway's advantage is the editing side. Aleph 2.0 for changing real footage and Act-Two for performance capture sit in the same account as generation. Veo makes more sense if you already pay for Google AI Pro, and Kling suits buyers who want purchased credits that last.
Commercial use, data and privacy
Runway's usage-rights page says the content you create is yours to use commercially, with no formal requirement to credit Runway, and it draws no line between free and paid plans (Free videos still carry the watermark, though). The Terms of Use, updated 15 September 2026, say Runway claims no ownership of your inputs or outputs. They also grant Runway a perpetual licence to use inputs and outputs to train and improve its models, and the privacy policy describes no training opt-out. Agencies handling unreleased client material should read section 4.4 before uploading.
API pricing for developers
The developer platform sells API credits at $0.01 each, bought per project. That makes the flagship $0.12 per second (a 10-second clip costs $1.20), the Turbo model and Act-Two $0.05 per second, Aleph 2.0 $0.28 per second with a 56-credit minimum, and Veo 3.1 Fast $0.10 to $0.15 per second. The API reference covers text to video, image-based generation, video to video, upscaling and character control. The API pricing page does not mention a free tier.
Paying from India
Runway bills through Stripe and lists credit and debit cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay and a few regional wallets, with the caveat that not every method works in every location. There is no rupee price list. Yearly billing is the cheapest route if you know you will use the tool all year: Standard works out to $144 a year.
Limitations to weigh before paying
- Credits vanish fast. One 10-second flagship clip costs 120 credits, nearly a fifth of the Standard pool.
- Completed generations are not refunded, even when the result misses the prompt. Credits come back automatically only when a job ends in an error.
- Flagship output is 720p, and studio formats are reserved for Max.
- The phone apps are a companion, not a full studio. The iOS version does not run on iPad, and Runway itself recommends a computer for serious work.
Fixing a failed generation
If a job errors out, wait a few minutes. The help center says the credits return and the spend entry disappears from your usage table. Stuck jobs, moderation flags and export failures each have their own troubleshooting article.
How to get started
- Sign up free at runway.com and spend the 125 credits on whichever models your account allows.
- Pick Standard if you need watermark-free video. Move to yearly billing only after a month of real use.
- Draft from a reference image on the Turbo model, then send the best shots to the flagship.
- Use Aleph 2.0 for fixes instead of regenerating from scratch.

Runway FAQ
What is Runway ML used for?
Runway is used to generate short video clips from text or images, edit existing footage with AI, and animate characters from recorded performances. Creators use it for B-roll, ads and concept films, and developers reach the same models through its API.
How much does Runway cost per month?
According to the official pricing page, Standard is $15 a month, Pro is $35 and Max is $95 when billed monthly. Yearly billing brings those down to $12, $28 and $76 a month. Enterprise is priced through sales, and a Free plan exists with 125 one-time credits.
How many credits does the Runway free plan give?
The Free plan gives 125 credits once. They do not expire but never refill, and Free users cannot buy extra credits. Free videos carry a Runway watermark and only a limited set of tools is included.
How do I use Motion Brush in Runway?
You can't any more. Runway's help center says Motion Brush was specific to the retired Gen-2 model and is not available on newer models. Runway suggests getting similar control by describing the motion in your prompt instead.
Can Runway videos be used commercially?
Yes. Runway's usage-rights page says content you create is yours to use without non-commercial restrictions, and crediting Runway is optional. Note that the Terms of Use let Runway use your inputs and outputs to train its models.
Runway vs Sora vs Kling: which should I pick?
Sora is no longer an option: OpenAI closed the Sora app and web in April 2026 and scheduled the API shutdown for September 2026. Between Runway and Kling, Runway has stronger editing tools (Aleph 2.0 and Act-Two), while Kling's purchased credits stay valid for two years and failed generations are refunded.
Can I pay for Runway from India?
Runway bills through Stripe and accepts credit and debit cards, Google Pay and other wallets, though it says not every method is available in every location. It publishes no INR prices, so you are charged in US dollars and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee.
What are the best free Runway alternatives?
Free options are thin across the category. Google places Veo video generation inside its paid Google AI plans, Kling's daily login credits are tied to subscriber events, and Sora has shut down. Runway's own 125 one-time credits remain a reasonable way to test before paying anyone.
Runway generation failed: how do I fix it?
If a generation ends in an error, wait a few minutes and the credits return automatically to your balance. For stuck jobs, export failures or moderation warnings, Runway's help center has a dedicated troubleshooting article for each. Completed generations that simply look wrong are not refunded.
Who is Runway best for?
Runway suits YouTubers, agencies, indie filmmakers and developers who need short AI shots plus AI editing of real footage in one place. Heavy users get the most value on Max, while casual users may find Standard's 625 credits run out quickly.
