Our verdict
Pi is still alive, still free and still the gentlest chatbot to talk to, and the July 2026 update made it more useful with reminders and better memory. It is a companion for thinking aloud, not a work tool, so keep ChatGPT or Copilot for output and use Pi for the conversations where tone matters.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Pi AI?
In March 2024 Microsoft agreed to pay Inflection $650 million, largely to license its models, and hired most of its staff, including co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan. Most people assumed Pi would quietly shut down after that. It did not. As of October 2026 the chatbot still answers at pi.ai, the Android and iPhone apps are still getting updates, and in July 2026 Inflection announced a sizeable Pi update. This Pi AI by Inflection personal assistant review looks at what the product is today, what it costs (nothing), where the undisclosed caps sit, and whether an Indian user has any reason to open it alongside ChatGPT or Copilot.
Is Pi AI still available after the Microsoft deal?
Yes. The short version of the story: Inflection AI launched Pi on 2 May 2023 as a "personal intelligence" that listened more than it lectured. Ten months later the Microsoft deal took the two DeepMind veterans and most of the team to set up Microsoft AI. Sean White took over as chief executive of what was left.
TechCrunch reported in August 2024 that Inflection had briefly planned to retire Pi, then reversed course, promising to keep the consumer app alive while it chased enterprise contracts and model licensing. That uncertainty is why searches like "is Pi still working" keep appearing.
The answer changed on 21 July 2026. In a press release from Palo Alto, Inflection announced improvements to Pi's voice, memory and conversation quality, added reminders, to-do lists and shopping help, and launched Inflection AI Labs, a research arm whose first experiment, Pi Journeys, is meant to help people through life transitions. The Google Play listing for India showed an update dated 21 September 2026, and the App Store listing for India shows version 26.720.0 with new voice controls. The product is live, maintained and free; the company behind it is simply much smaller.
What Pi actually does well in a conversation
Pi was never built to write your quarterly report. Fortune's launch coverage in 2023 noted it deliberately avoided code and long essays, and that design choice still shows. Ask it how to tell your co-founder that the equity split feels unfair, and it shines: short replies, follow-up questions, a calm tone, and suggestions you can actually say out loud.
The App Store description groups its uses into five buckets:
- Talk it out: rehearse a difficult conversation or simply vent after a bad day.
- Fuel your curiosity: learn a topic or practise a language in casual back-and-forth.
- Get things done: work through a decision or turn a vague goal into an action plan.
- Get inspired: brainstorm ideas or ask for something to watch.
- Have fun: open-ended chat with no task at all.
The July 2026 update added practical tools on top: reminders, to-do lists and shopping lists you build by talking. Memory was improved too, so Pi is better at picking up a thread from earlier in the week. Inflection says Pi now runs on its own stack, orchestrated across custom fine-tuned models, and it does not name a single flagship model behind the app.
For a founder or marketer, Pi is a thinking partner and an empathetic chatbot, not a production tool.
Using Pi AI voice conversation hands-free or with tap to talk
Voice is where Pi feels most different from other conversational AI apps. Its replies are short by default, which suits speech, and the voices sound relaxed rather than robotic. The current iPhone release notes describe two voice modes:
- Hands-free: Pi listens continuously and replies when you pause. Good for a walk or a drive.
- Tap to talk: you tap to start speaking and tap again when you finish. Better in noisy rooms or when you think in long pauses.
A new Zen display option replaces the live transcript with a simple soundwave, so you are not tempted to read along. Both modes sit in the app's voice settings, and tapping while Pi is talking cuts it off straight away. One limitation for Indian users: the App Store lists English as the only supported language, so Hindi or Tamil voice is not something Inflection advertises, even if Pi can follow some mixed-language text.
Pi AI: is it free, and where are the usage caps?
Pi costs nothing. There is no Plus tier, no subscription screen, and neither the App Store nor Google Play listing shows in-app purchases. Inflection's terms of service (last updated 22 December 2025) describe no paid features.
The catch is a cap that nobody can quote. In August 2024 Inflection told TechCrunch it would cap free access, mainly affecting power users, with exact limits still to be decided. No figure has appeared since, and the help centre is silent on limits. If you plan to talk to Pi for hours a day, expect that you may eventually hit a pause.
| Item | Pi (Inflection) |
|---|---|
| Price | Free on web, Android and iOS |
| Paid plan | None offered |
| Message limit | Cap announced in 2024, figure never published |
| Help | Help centre (about 33 articles) and a request form |

Pi AI vs ChatGPT for a late-night vent versus a work task
The comparison most readers want is Pi against ChatGPT, and the two are built for different jobs. ChatGPT's free tier handles writing, code, file analysis, image generation and web search, and its paid tiers (ChatGPT Go launched in India in August 2025, and Plus costs $20 a month in the US) add higher limits. Pi does a fraction of that, and does it on purpose.
| Need | Pi | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Venting, emotional support, reflection | Its core purpose; short, warm replies | Capable, but tends toward longer, list-style answers |
| Writing long documents | Not designed for it | Strong |
| Coding | Not a focus | Strong |
| Voice chat | Hands-free and tap to talk, free | Voice mode, limits depend on plan |
| Cost | Free, no paid tier | Free tier plus paid plans |
| Company stability | Small team after 2024 restructuring | OpenAI, large and well funded |
Microsoft Copilot is the other natural comparison, partly because Pi's co-founder Suleyman went to Microsoft in the 2024 deal. Copilot's free app includes voice, image creation and web answers, and it plugs into Microsoft 365 if you pay. If you want one free assistant that does everything, Copilot or ChatGPT is the practical pick. Pi earns a place as a second app for conversations where tone matters more than output.
Can Pi help with stress, anxiety or mental health?
Many people use Pi for emotional support, and the app is good at listening without judgement. It is not therapy. Inflection's terms say outputs are not a substitute for professional advice, and the company publishes a separate Crisis Prevention and Safety Protocol page. For anyone in India facing a crisis, a trained counsellor or a recognised mental health helpline is the right first call; Pi can help you organise thoughts afterwards.
What Inflection does with your Pi chats
Read the privacy policy (updated 11 August 2026) before sharing anything sensitive. Key points:
- Inflection may use your conversations to train its models unless you opt out from the Account settings page.
- Pi may infer emotional state and tone from your voice. That, too, has a separate opt-out in settings.
- Data is stored on servers in the United States and other countries. The policy offers no India data residency option.
- After you delete content, inputs are generally kept for up to 15 days, with exceptions for security, fraud and legal needs.
- You can delete your account from the profile page, or type "!delete" in the chat to remove your data.
- Inflection says it does not sell personal information or use it for targeted ads, as US state laws define those terms.
On commercial use, the terms say you own your inputs and outputs, but Inflection gets a broad licence to them, and you may not use Pi's outputs to build a competing model. In 2024 Inflection also announced a conversation export option through a data-portability partnership, though TechCrunch noted at the time that rival chatbots could not yet import those files.
WhatsApp Pi, SMS and the channels that faded
At launch, Inflection's press release listed WhatsApp and SMS (through a +1 number), Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger alongside the website and iPhone app. Today the official Inflection site points only to the web app and the Google Play and App Store listings, and the current privacy policy mentions SMS for codes and notifications but not WhatsApp or Messenger. Treat the web and the Pi app as the supported routes and do not rely on old guides that send you to a WhatsApp number.
Where Pi falls short for paying professionals
- No serious output tools: no long-form drafting focus, no coding help, no image generation, no team features.
- No developer access for individuals: Inflection sells model access to enterprises; there is no self-serve Pi API for small teams.
- Thin support: a help centre with around 30 articles, a request form, no public status page and no live chat.
- Uncertain roadmap: the July 2026 relaunch is encouraging, but the company is small and in 2024 it came close to retiring Pi.
- Age mismatch: the terms require users to be 18, the App Store rates it 18+, yet Google Play shows a 3+ rating. Parents should go by the terms.
Your first week with the Pi app
Start on the web at pi.ai and have one real conversation about something on your mind, such as a hiring decision or a tense client call. If the tone works for you, install the Pi app on Android or iPhone and sign in so history follows you across devices. Then switch on voice, try hands-free during a commute, and ask Pi to set a reminder for one action from that chat. Before you get comfortable, open Account settings and decide on the two opt-outs (model training and voice emotion inference).
Who should read this Pi AI by Inflection personal assistant review and still install it
Pi suits people who want personal AI for thinking out loud: solo founders with no one to vent to, students practising English conversation, and anyone who prefers a short, kind reply over a wall of bullet points. It does not suit someone looking for a single paid assistant to write, code and research. Keep a mainstream assistant for real work and use Pi for the conversations you would not have with a spreadsheet open.

Pi AI FAQ
What is Pi AI?
Pi is a free conversational AI from Inflection AI, launched in May 2023 and built for supportive, back-and-forth chat rather than content production. It runs on the web at pi.ai and in Android and iOS apps, with text and voice conversation.
Is Pi AI free?
Yes. Pi has no paid plan, and neither app store listing shows in-app purchases. Inflection announced a message cap for heavy free users in 2024 but has never published the number.
Who made Pi AI?
Inflection AI, a public benefit corporation in Palo Alto founded in 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman, Karén Simonyan and Reid Hoffman. Suleyman and Simonyan left for Microsoft in March 2024; Sean White is now CEO.
Pi AI vs ChatGPT: which is better?
They do different jobs. ChatGPT is the stronger all-round tool for writing, code, files and images, with free and paid plans. Pi is better as a calm listening partner for reflection and emotional conversations, and it is entirely free.
How do I use Pi AI voice?
In the Pi app, open the voice settings and choose Hands-free (Pi replies when you pause) or Tap to talk (tap to start and tap again to finish). You can also turn on the Zen display to see a soundwave instead of a transcript.
Is Pi AI still working?
Yes. As of October 2026 pi.ai and both mobile apps are live and receiving updates. Inflection relaunched Pi with better voice, memory and new reminder and to-do tools in July 2026.
Is Pi AI safe and private?
Inflection's privacy policy says chats may be used to train its models unless you opt out in Account settings, and voice may be used to infer emotions, also with an opt-out. Data is stored in the US and other countries, and deleted inputs are generally kept for up to 15 days. Avoid sharing passwords, financial or health details you would not want stored.
Can Pi AI help with mental health?
Pi can help you vent and organise your thoughts, and many people use it for emotional support. It is not a therapist, and Inflection's terms say it is no substitute for professional advice. In a crisis in India, contact a qualified professional or a recognised helpline.
What are the best Pi AI alternatives?
ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are the main free alternatives with voice, and both do far more work tasks. Claude and Google Gemini are also strong for longer writing. Character.AI suits people who want role-play companions rather than a single supportive assistant.
Who is Pi AI best for?
Adults who want a free, friendly assistant for thinking aloud, practising conversations or casual learning by voice. It is less useful for professionals who need documents, code or research output from an AI.
