Our verdict
OBS Studio is the default choice for anyone who wants free, unlimited screen recording and live streaming with real control over quality. Expect an evening of setup with the official guides. If you want polished overlays out of the box and do not mind a subscription, Streamlabs is easier to start with.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is OBS Studio?
OBS Studio is the free, open-source recorder and live encoder that most streamers try first, and this guide pulls together the OBS Studio best settings for streaming and recording straight from official documentation, plus an honest look at where the app is hard work. The current stable build is 32.2.2 (August 2026), and version 33 is in release-candidate testing on GitHub.
What OBS Studio is and who it suits
OBS stands for Open Broadcaster Software. The project goes back to 2012, and the official site credits Lain Bailey as the person who created it and still maintains it with help from contributors on GitHub. The code is released under the GNU GPL v2 (or any later version) licence. There is no paid tier, no watermark and no time limit on recordings.
People use it for three main jobs: live streaming to YouTube, Twitch or any service that accepts an RTMP stream key; recording tutorials, gameplay and webinars to a local file; and feeding a polished video signal into Zoom, Google Meet or Teams through its virtual camera. Indian YouTubers, edtech teachers recording lectures, agencies running client webinars and developers making product demos all fit the profile.
Who should skip it? Someone who only needs a ten-second screen clip once a month. The built-in recorders on Windows and macOS will do that with fewer clicks.
Key features in practice
Everything in OBS is built from scenes and sources. A scene is a layout (say, "Webcam + slides" or "Gameplay full screen"), and each scene holds sources such as display capture for a whole monitor, window capture for one app, game capture for a Windows game, a webcam, images, text and a browser source for web-based alerts or chat overlays. You switch scenes with a click or a hotkey, which is why the same tool works for a solo vlog and a three-camera panel.
- Audio mixer: every audio input gets its own fader, mute button and filter chain. The official filters list includes Noise Suppression, Noise Gate, Compressor, Limiter, Gain and VST 2.x plugin support.
- Video filters: Chroma Key, Color Correction, Apply LUT, Crop/Pad, Sharpen and others. The chroma key filter is what you use with a green screen.
- Replay buffer: keeps the last few seconds in memory and saves them to disk when you press a hotkey, handy for catching a moment you were not recording.
- Studio Mode: edit a preview scene while the live one stays on air.
- Plugins: the OBS forum hosts a large catalogue of community plugins, such as extra replay buffer tools.
Version 32.2 (July 2026) added a new dialog for adding sources (replacing the old drop-down), an SDR-to-HDR filter, WebP support in the Image Slide Show source and dynamic bitrate for multitrack video, according to the GitHub release notes.
OBS Studio best settings for streaming and recording, from the official guides
There is no single magic preset, because the right numbers depend on your upload speed, GPU and target platform. What follows sticks to what OBS and the platforms themselves publish.
Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS's system requirements page points users to Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard to find settings that suit their hardware. Run it first, then fine-tune.
Pick a hardware encoder if you have one. The OBS hardware encoding guide lists four families:
- NVIDIA NVENC (Windows and Linux): GeForce 750 Ti, the 900 series or newer; OBS recommends Turing-generation (6th gen) NVENC, such as the GTX 1650 rev 2 and later. Separately, the 32.2 release notes say the NVIDIA SDK moved to version 13, so driver 570 or newer is now the minimum.
- AMD AMF (Windows and Linux): supported GPUs are listed in the AMF plugin documentation.
- Intel Quick Sync (Windows and Linux): works from 2nd-gen Core (Sandy Bridge) onward, but OBS recommends 4th-gen (Haswell) or newer for acceptable quality.
- Apple VideoToolbox: on Apple Silicon you can stream in H.264 and record in H.264, HEVC or Apple ProRes. On Intel Macs it is recording-only (H.264).
The guide explains why OBS generally prefers these: a hardware encoder such as the nvenc encoder hands the work to a dedicated part of the GPU instead of the CPU.
Match YouTube's published bitrates. YouTube's live encoder settings page lists, for H.264, a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60fps, 5 and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30fps, and 3 and 8 Mbps for 720p at either frame rate. It asks for constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (never above 4), and AAC or MP3 audio at 128 Kbps stereo, sampled at 44.1 kHz.
For Twitch, check Twitch's own broadcasting guidelines before you set a bitrate, as its limits differ from YouTube's and change from time to time.
Multitrack video (Enhanced Broadcasting). OBS 30.2 (July 2024) introduced multitrack video streaming, which sends several video tracks from your own PC in one go; Twitch calls this Enhanced Broadcasting. The 30.2 notes limit it to Windows with an NVIDIA GTX 900-series or newer card, or an AMD RX 6000-series or newer card.
Record to MKV or Hybrid MP4. The OBS recording guide recommends MKV because a crash or power cut does not ruin the file, and there is an "Automatically remux to mp4" option for editors that dislike MKV. OBS 30.2 also added Hybrid MP4 (labelled beta at launch), which its release notes describe as combining fragmented MP4's fault tolerance with regular MP4's compatibility, and it supports chapter markers that DaVinci Resolve can read.
How to record screen with audio and stream to YouTube
To record, add a display capture (or window capture) source to a scene, then check the audio mixer: by default OBS shows a desktop audio track and a mic track. Speak and play a sound to make sure both meters move. Hit Start Recording, and the file lands in the folder set under Settings > Output.
To stream to YouTube, YouTube's help centre says the first-time enablement of live streaming can take up to 24 hours. After that, open YouTube Studio, click Create > Go Live, and copy the stream URL and stream key from the Stream tab. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream, choose YouTube (or paste the RTMP server and the key manually), then click Start Streaming. Treat the RTMP stream key like a password; anyone with it can broadcast to your channel.
Virtual camera setup in OBS Studio
The virtual camera lets Zoom, Meet, Teams or any browser call see your OBS output as if it were a webcam. Per the official guide, you click Start Virtual Camera in the Controls dock and pick it as your camera inside the meeting app. The gear icon next to the button chooses what gets sent: the Program output, the Preview (in Studio Mode), one specific scene or a single source. Trainers often send a scene that combines their webcam, a lower-third name strip and the slide deck.
The black screen fix in OBS Studio
A black preview is the most common beginner complaint. The official game capture troubleshooting page lists the usual causes:
- Wrong GPU on laptops: dual-GPU laptops and all-in-one PCs may run OBS on the integrated chip. Set both OBS and the game to the high-performance GPU, then restart both.
- Admin rights: some games (the page names Call of Duty and Genshin Impact) need OBS run as administrator.
- Overlays and monitoring tools: RivaTuner/MSI Afterburner and some antivirus software can block the hook.
- Games that block game capture: titles such as Destiny 2 and Counter-Strike 2 need windowed or borderless mode with window capture instead.
- Minimised full-screen games stop drawing frames, so test with a short recording or a second monitor.
OBS Studio vs Streamlabs
Streamlabs Desktop takes a different approach: a friendlier interface with a theme store, alerts and widgets tied to Streamlabs accounts. Its free plan covers basic overlays and streaming. Ultra costs $27 a month, or $189 a year ($15.75 a month), per the Streamlabs FAQ. It adds multistreaming, premium overlays, an app store, 10GB cloud storage and Collab Cam for up to 11 guests.
| Point | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, open source (GPL) | Free plan; Ultra $27/mo or $189/yr |
| Operating systems | Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, Linux | Windows 10+, macOS 12+ |
| Multistreaming | Via plugins or a relay service | Included in Ultra |
| Overlays and alerts | Build your own or add a browser source | Built-in themes and widgets |
| Account needed | No | Streamlabs login for most features |
Which is better? For a beginner who wants a ready-made Twitch look in an hour, Streamlabs is quicker. For recording, Linux users, tight control over encoder settings or a tool with no upsell, OBS wins.
A free alternative for Mac users, or just OBS Studio?
OBS itself runs free on macOS 13 and newer, on both Apple Silicon and Intel (32.2 dropped macOS 12). If you only need simple recordings, macOS includes its own: press Shift-Command-5 or use QuickTime Player's New Screen Recording, both of which can record a microphone according to Apple Support. Streamlabs Desktop also has a macOS build. For streaming with scenes, though, OBS remains the strongest free option on a Mac.
Hardware needs and low-end PCs
OBS's system requirements page asks for Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1 GPU, an OpenGL 3.3 GPU on macOS and Linux, and X11 or Wayland on Linux. It also warns that meeting these does not guarantee smooth output, because CPU load depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Those four factors are the levers to pull on a modest machine, alongside a hardware encoder if your GPU has one, and the wizard is worth running again after any hardware change.
Safety, privacy and commercial use
Downloaded from obsproject.com, the official GitHub releases or the Linux options listed on the download page (Flathub and an Ubuntu PPA), OBS is safe: the full source code is public and the project is GPL-licensed. Avoid third-party "OBS download" sites. The GPL allows commercial streaming and recording; what you broadcast is yours. "OBS" and "OBS Studio" are registered trademarks of Wizards of OBS LLC, so you cannot pass off a modified build under that name.
Limitations
- The interface is dense for first-timers, and settings sit across many tabs.
- No official phone support or live chat; help comes from the knowledge base and community forum.
- Multistreaming and fancy alerts need plugins or third-party services.
- No built-in video editor, so you will need a separate editor for cuts.
How to get started
Download the installer from obsproject.com, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, and build one scene with a capture source and your mic. Record a two-minute test, play it back, and check audio sync before you go live. Is OBS good for beginners? Yes, if you give it an evening; the official knowledge base answers most first-week questions.

OBS Studio FAQ
What is OBS Studio used for?
OBS Studio is used to record the screen, webcam and audio to a file, and to stream live to YouTube, Twitch and other RTMP services. It can also send its output to Zoom, Meet or Teams through a virtual camera. Teachers, gamers, agencies and developers use it for tutorials, webinars and live shows.
Is OBS Studio completely free?
Yes. OBS Studio is open-source software released under the GNU GPL v2 or later, with no paid plan, watermark or recording time limit. Paid costs only come in if you choose third-party plugins or services.
How do I record my screen with audio in OBS?
Add a Display Capture or Window Capture source to a scene, then check that both the desktop audio and mic meters move in the Audio Mixer. Click Start Recording, and OBS saves the file to the path set in Settings > Output. MKV is the format OBS recommends because it survives crashes.
How do I stream to YouTube using OBS?
Enable live streaming on your channel, which YouTube says can take up to 24 hours the first time. In YouTube Studio go to Create > Go Live and copy the stream URL and stream key, then add them in OBS under Settings > Stream (or pick YouTube as the service). Click Start Streaming to go live.
Is OBS Studio safe to download?
Yes, when you download it from obsproject.com, the official GitHub releases page, or the Linux sources listed on the download page. Its source code is public under the GPL. Avoid unofficial download mirrors that bundle extra installers.
OBS Studio vs Streamlabs, which is better?
Streamlabs Desktop is easier for beginners who want ready-made overlays and alerts, and its Ultra plan costs $27 a month or $189 a year. OBS Studio is fully free, runs on Linux as well as Windows and macOS, and gives finer control over encoding. Pick Streamlabs for speed of setup and OBS for control and zero cost.
What are OBS Studio hardware requirements for a low-end PC?
The official requirements are Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1 GPU, or an OpenGL 3.3 GPU on macOS and Linux; the current download page lists macOS 13 or newer. OBS warns that meeting these does not guarantee smooth performance. It names encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity as the main drivers of CPU load, so start there, use a hardware encoder if you have one and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard.
What are the best OBS Studio alternatives?
Streamlabs Desktop is the closest alternative, with a free plan and a paid Ultra tier. For basic recordings, the built-in tools in Windows and macOS (Shift-Command-5 or QuickTime Player on a Mac) work without any install. None of them match OBS for free, scene-based streaming.
How do I fix a black screen in OBS when capturing a game?
On laptops, set both OBS and the game to the high-performance GPU and restart them. Some games need OBS run as administrator, and overlays like RivaTuner can block capture. Games that block Game Capture, such as Counter-Strike 2, should run in windowed or borderless mode with Window Capture.
Is OBS good for beginners?
Yes, though the first evening takes patience because the settings are spread across many tabs. The Auto-Configuration Wizard and the official knowledge base cover most early questions. Beginners who want instant templates may find Streamlabs quicker.
