Our verdict

3.9out of 5

Meta AI is the easiest free assistant for Indians because it is already in WhatsApp and understands Hinglish. You cannot remove it, only mute it and keep it out of sensitive chats, and what you tell it can shape the ads you see. Use it for quick answers and images, and keep a ChatGPT or Gemini account for real work.

What is Meta AI?

Since April 2026 the blue ring inside WhatsApp has been moving to a different engine. Meta says its Muse Spark model, the first from Meta Superintelligence Labs, now powers the Meta AI app and meta.ai and is on its way to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. Until then the assistant ran on Meta's Llama models. For Indian users the questions are the same as before: what is free, and can you get it out of your chats? This review answers both, starting with meta ai on WhatsApp: how to use and remove it (or at least keep it at arm's length), then moves on to images, paid plans, privacy and how it compares with ChatGPT.

Five apps, one assistant: where Meta AI shows up

Meta AI is a chatbot that sits inside apps you already use. In WhatsApp it appears as a blue circle above the chat list and as a contact you can message. In Instagram it lives in the search bar and in DMs, which is the version people mean by instagram ai. Facebook messenger ai works the same way, with Meta AI suggestions in search and a dedicated chat thread. There is also a standalone Meta AI app on Android and iOS, a web version at meta.ai, and voice access on Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Oakley Meta glasses.

The assistant arrived in India in June 2024, in English at first, and the following month Meta added Hindi and Hindi written in Roman script, along with French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. That matters, because most Indians type Hindi in English letters on WhatsApp. Meta's Indian push on the glasses side went further in October 2025, when Ray-Ban Meta glasses got full Hindi support built with tools from the Indian AI company Sarvam, plus live cricket score updates.

Beyond chat, the family includes ai stickers you can generate from a short prompt, ai characters made by creators through Meta's AI Studio, and meta ai search, where questions typed into the WhatsApp or Instagram search bar get an AI answer instead of a list of chats.

Meta AI on WhatsApp how to use and remove it, step by step

Using it takes no setup. Open WhatsApp, tap the blue circle (or open the Meta AI chat) and type a question in English, Hindi or Hinglish. Ask for a recipe, a translation, a summary of a long forward, or a birthday wish in Marathi. In a group, type @Meta AI followed by your question. Meta's privacy page says it reads only messages that mention it or reply to its answers.

Voice works too. Meta's May 2026 update says the Muse Spark voice mode in the Meta AI app lets you interrupt it, change topic or swap languages partway through.

Removing it is harder. No setting deletes Meta AI from the app. What you can do is:

  • Delete what you said to it. Type /reset-ai in the Meta AI chat. Meta's privacy page names this command as the way to delete your AI messages in WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
  • Mute and archive the Meta AI chat so it stops appearing at the top of your list.
  • Use Advanced Chat Privacy on sensitive chats and groups (covered below).

Why there is no master switch, and how to turn off Meta AI in WhatsApp chats that matter

WhatsApp told the BBC that Meta AI is "optional" because you never have to tap it, as Forbes reported, while the same coverage and outlets such as TechRadar made clear that the button itself cannot be removed. Nothing in Meta's 2026 announcements changes that.

The closest thing to an off switch is Advanced Chat Privacy. Anyone in a chat or group can enable it by tapping the chat name. Once on, other members cannot export the chat or auto-save its media, and messages in that chat cannot be pulled into AI features. Family groups that share Aadhaar photos or bank screenshots, and agency client groups, should switch it on.

Your normal chats stay end-to-end encrypted either way. The assistant sees only what you send or forward to it and group messages that tag it.

Is the Meta AI image generator free? Imagine prompts and Muse Image

Yes, for everyday use. For a long time the trick was the imagine feature: type "Imagine" followed by a description, such as "Imagine a chai stall on a rainy Mumbai street, watercolour style", and Meta AI returned pictures in the chat. "Imagine me" added your own face from a selfie, though it launched in beta in the US.

In July 2026 Meta introduced Muse Image, the first image model from its Superintelligence Labs team. According to Meta's announcement, it is free for everyday creation on meta.ai, powers more than 30 new Instagram Stories effects, and is reaching WhatsApp chats with Meta AI in a limited set of countries first. Heavier use needs a paid plan, and Meta One Core lists more image and video generation among its perks. A video model, Muse Video, is in development.

Two cautions. Meta publishes no daily image limits for the free tier, so heavy users may hit a cap without warning. And Meta removed a Muse Image option that let people reference public Instagram accounts by @-mention, three days after launch, so features can change quickly.

Which model runs Meta AI in India now that Llama is being replaced

Through 2024 and 2025 Meta AI ran on llama models; Meta's June 2024 India launch post named Llama 3. In April 2026 Meta announced Muse Spark, which has Instant and Thinking modes, can run subagents in parallel on one question, and handles shopping searches and visual coding of simple websites and games. Muse Spark was not released as open source at launch. Meta offered it to selected partners through a private API preview and said it hopes to open-source future versions.

India's position is less clear. Meta's April post said the rollout started in the US, in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, with more countries and the four main apps to follow. There is no country-by-country table, so the model answering you in WhatsApp may depend on your app version and region. The interface looks the same either way.

Meta's newest models, Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full (October 2026), are aimed at developers through the Meta Model API and Muse Code. Meta has not said they power Meta AI inside WhatsApp.

Where Meta One adds paid limits

Meta AI itself stays free. In September 2026 Meta launched Meta One, a subscription family that spans Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Meta AI. The plans with extra Meta AI room are listed below. Meta lists USD prices only and says pricing varies by region, app and account, so check the in-app price in India.

PlanPrice (official)What changes for Meta AI
Meta AI (free)₹0 / $0Chat, voice, search answers, everyday image generation in WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook, the app and meta.ai
Meta One Core$7.99/moMore image and video generation, plus more Restyle and voice effects on Instagram
Meta One Premium$19.99/moEverything in Core with the most room to create with Meta AI across the apps

Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, is a separate product. Launched in September 2026 as its own app and on muse.ai, it runs tasks such as sending emails or making purchases from a cloud virtual machine and checks with you before sensitive steps. Meta says the rollout began in the US and that most use is free, with paid plans for heavier users, but it has not published those prices. Creator and business bundles ($14.99 to $499 a month) are about running accounts, not chatbot use.

Meta AI vs ChatGPT for an Indian user on a free plan

The honest split is reach versus depth. Meta AI is already inside the app on almost every Indian phone, handles Hinglish well, and can join a family group without anyone installing anything. ChatGPT wins on work. Its free plan handles file uploads, longer documents and coding help better, and ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month according to OpenAI's help centre. Meta AI is weak at working through a 40-page PDF.

Many small businesses will use both: whatsapp ai for quick customer drafts, ChatGPT or Gemini for heavier writing.

What Meta does with your chats: training, ads and the EU exception

Meta's privacy statement says it does not train its models on the content of your private messages with friends and family, unless you or someone in that chat shares those messages with an AI feature. Chats with Meta AI itself are different: Meta says it uses them to improve its products, may pass some questions to search partners, and has both automated systems and people review interactions.

Since 16 December 2025, Meta has also used your text and voice chats with Meta AI to personalise ads and suggested posts, according to Meta's own October 2025 post and reports by Reuters and Business Today. On WhatsApp this applies only if the account is linked in Accounts Center. As those reports describe it, Meta's announcement excluded only the EU, UK and South Korea at launch, and there is no toggle to refuse it other than not using the assistant. Meta says chats about religion, politics, health, sexual orientation and similar topics are not used to show ads.

People in the EU get more control. Meta trains on adults' public posts and comments plus Meta AI interactions there, but EU users can file an objection form at any time, and public data from under-18 accounts is excluded. Meta has not announced a similar objection form for Indian users.

Treat Meta AI like a public helpdesk: no PAN numbers, medical reports or client contracts.

Gaps that matter before you rely on it for work

  • Built for short chats on phones; long files and multi-step documents go better in ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.
  • Usage limits on the free tier are not published.
  • Features often start in the US or a few countries: Muse Spark, Muse Image in WhatsApp and the Muse agent all did.
  • No opt-out from AI chats feeding ad personalisation outside the regions Meta left out.
  • Meta does not state commercial-use terms for generated images as clearly as dedicated design tools do.

Better picks if you want an assistant outside your chat apps

For writing and research, ChatGPT and Google Gemini both have free plans, and Gemini plugs into Gmail and Docs. Claude is stronger for long documents and coding. If images are the goal, Canva and Adobe Firefly give clearer commercial-use rules. Still, Meta AI is the easiest way to get a free answer, picture or translation without leaving WhatsApp, which is reason enough to keep it, muted if need be.

A sensible first week: ask it three real questions in Hinglish, generate one image for a Story, switch on Advanced Chat Privacy in your most sensitive groups, and run /reset-ai whenever you have shared something you would rather Meta did not keep.

Meta AI FAQ

What is Meta AI?

Meta AI is Meta's free AI assistant. It lives inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook, and also has its own Android and iOS app, a website at meta.ai and voice access on Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Since April 2026 Meta's new Muse Spark model has been taking over from the Llama models that powered it before.

Is Meta AI free?

Yes. Meta says everyday use of Meta AI stays free, including chat, voice and image generation. Meta One bundles (Core at $7.99 a month and Premium at $19.99 a month in Meta's announcement) add more image and video generation, and Meta says pricing varies by region.

How do you use Meta AI on WhatsApp?

Tap the blue circle above your chats or open the Meta AI chat and type or speak a question. In a group, type @Meta AI followed by your question. Meta says the assistant only reads group messages that mention it or reply to it.

Can you disable Meta AI in WhatsApp?

Not completely. WhatsApp told the BBC that Meta AI is optional, but the button cannot be removed. You can mute or archive the Meta AI chat, delete your AI messages with /reset-ai, and turn on Advanced Chat Privacy in individual chats and groups so their messages cannot be used in AI features.

How do you generate images with Meta AI?

Ask for a picture in the Meta AI chat, for example by typing "Imagine" followed by a description. Images are free for everyday use. Meta's newer Muse Image model works on meta.ai and in Instagram Story effects, and its WhatsApp chat feature started in a limited set of countries.

Is Meta AI better than ChatGPT?

It depends on the job. Meta AI is more convenient because it is already inside WhatsApp and Instagram and handles Hinglish well. ChatGPT is stronger for documents, coding and long research, and ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month.

Is Meta AI safe and private?

Your normal WhatsApp chats stay end-to-end encrypted, and Meta AI only sees what you send it or tag it in. Messages you send to Meta AI are used to improve Meta's products, may be reviewed by people, and outside the EU, UK and South Korea also feed ad personalisation. Avoid sharing ID numbers, health details or client data with it.

Is Meta AI available in India?

Yes. Meta AI launched in India in English in June 2024 across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and meta.ai, and Hindi support followed in July 2024. Newer launches such as Muse Spark and the separate Muse agent started in the US, so India can get features later.

Does Meta AI use my chats?

Meta says it does not train its AI on your private messages with friends and family unless someone in the chat shares them with an AI feature. Your conversations with Meta AI itself are used to improve products, and since 16 December 2025 they also personalise ads. Reuters and Business Today reported that the EU, UK and South Korea were left out at launch.

What are the best Meta AI alternatives?

ChatGPT and Google Gemini are the main free alternatives, with Gemini adding Gmail and Docs integration. Claude is strong for long documents and code. For images with clearer commercial-use terms, Canva and Adobe Firefly are safer choices.
