What is Character.AI?

Character.AI is a consumer chat app where you talk to AI characters that other users (or you) have built: anime heroes, study buddies, historical figures, game masters and original creations. This review covers the Character AI Plus price and features, the cheaper lite tier, the free plan, and the age rules every parent should read before installing the app. One piece of company news matters before you pay. On 12 October 2026 Character Technologies began a voluntary Chapter 11 case in Delaware to run a court-supervised sale, with Disney as the opening bidder at $20 million for a non-exclusive licence to some of its IP. The company says the app, website and paid subscriptions keep working while the sale runs (it expects the process to finish in late November or early December 2026), but it has also said the platform will be wound down if no bid keeps it going.

What Character.AI is and how it works

Every character is an AI model running on a creator's instructions: a name, a greeting, a description and optional example dialogue. Character.AI lets you choose the model behind each conversation through what it calls chat styles. Since an update on 28 September 2026, new chats default to PipSqueak 3, and ShortSqueak is the second free style, tuned for quick, short replies. The premium styles are DeepSqueak and LongSqueak, while older styles such as PipSqueak 2 and Rawr sit in a Legacy menu. If you searched for the pipsqueak model, PipSqueak 3 is the current free default.

You can set a persona, a short profile of who you are in the story, so characters address you consistently. Character Technologies, Inc. was founded in 2021 by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, and is based in Menlo Park, California. In August 2024 both founders went back to Google, which took a non-exclusive licence to Character.AI's models as part of that deal. Its CEO today is Colin Adams.

Who it is for (and who it is not for)

The product suits adults who want a roleplay chatbot for fiction, interactive storytelling, language practice with a patient partner, or casual companionship. It is not a productivity tool. There is no public API, no file analysis and no coding help worth relying on. Founders and agencies wanting a business assistant should look at ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

Key features in practice

• Characters and creation: Quick mode builds a character in under a minute. Advanced mode adds custom definitions and image generation, per the official Character Book.
• Chat memory: Free users get 15 memory pins, while lite and c.ai+ get 30. c.ai+ also gets the advanced Lorebook for persistent world details.
• Voice calls: Character Voice and Character Calls let characters speak, and the help centre lists them as free for all users. Voice works in one-to-one chats only, not group chat.
• Group chat: Rooms let several characters and people share one conversation.
• Charms: An in-app currency earned through daily quests or bought in packs, spent on extra images, skipping slow mode or skipping ads.
• Stories, Imagine Chat and AvatarFX: Stories (added in December 2025) turns two or three characters into a guided, choose-your-path adventure, and the other two tools generate images and short videos of characters.

Character AI Plus price and features compared with lite and Free

Character.AI does not publish one complete price list on its website. The subscribe page shows the yearly c.ai+ plan at $94.99, against $119.88 for twelve monthly payments, and the US App Store lists c.ai+ purchases at $9.99 and $94.99. The company's lite announcement and help article put lite at $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week in the US and say prices vary by region. The Indian App Store lists Character.AI+ at ₹999 and ₹9,900 and Lite at ₹299 and ₹149. That listing does not label the billing periods, although the amounts line up with the US monthly, yearly and weekly tiers, so confirm the period on the checkout screen.

The c.ai+ FAQ adds that subscribers skip waiting rooms and get replies roughly two to three times faster. Payment works through card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. App store subscriptions are cancelled in App Store or Google Play settings. For lite bought on the web (billed through Stripe), the help centre asks you to raise a support ticket under Payments and purchases to cancel or request a refund.

Is Character AI free? Free vs paid limits

Yes. The help centre states that messaging is free and unlimited for all users, and the free tier still includes character creation, voice and group chat. You give up speed and polish: full-screen ads, slow mode at busy hours, basic chat styles only and half the memory pins. Paying does not change the content rules or the age checks. The Age Assurance FAQ says plainly that buying c.ai+ does not bypass age assurance.

Is Character AI Plus worth it?

The honest test is how often you open the app. For a heavy daily user, c.ai+ buys three tangible things: no ads, no queue, and unlimited DeepSqueak and LongSqueak replies. If you chat for an hour a day and the ads annoy you, ₹999 is defensible. If you chat a few times a week, lite at ₹299 gives you a daily allowance of the premium styles for under a third of that. The sale process changes the maths on the annual plan. Until a buyer is confirmed, monthly billing limits what you could lose. Also note the c.ai+ FAQ says character outputs are the same for free and paying users, so you pay for access and speed, not a smarter version of the same model.

Character AI age restrictions, safety and parental controls

On 29 October 2025, Character.AI announced it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18, and that change took effect on 25 November 2025. Today, every account goes through age assurance. The company uses its own signals (login details, platform activity, third-party signals) and, for flagged accounts, a selfie check run by Persona. If the selfie is inconclusive, Persona may ask for a government ID. The help centre says Character.AI never sees the uploaded ID, and that Persona deletes selfies and ID images within 7 days.

Users placed in the under-18 experience get Reading Mode. The help centre says they can browse characters, read past chats, create characters, scenes and videos, and use Imagine Chat and AvatarFX, but chat features are switched off. Stories was introduced in December 2025 as the teen-friendly format to replace open chat. Before the ban, the company launched Parental Insights in March 2025: an opt-in weekly email to a parent showing time spent and top characters, but never the chat content itself. Both app store listings carry an 18+ rating. Internet Matters notes that the Terms set a minimum age of 13 (16 in the EU), so a teen can still sign up, just without chat. For context, in January 2026 Character.AI and Google agreed to settle lawsuits from families who said the chatbots had harmed their children.

For families, the practical steps are simple. Use Google Family Link or Apple Screen Time to block the app if you do not want it installed, talk to teens about why companion bots can feel very real, and remind them not to upload photos or voices of themselves or friends.

The Character AI NSFW filter and content rules

The help centre says Character.AI does not and will not support vulgar, obscene or pornographic content, and that asking for the filter to be removed can get your account banned. The filter stays on for every plan, including c.ai+. Trying to bypass it breaks the Terms of Service and risks your account and subscription.

Privacy, data and commercial use

The model training help article says Character.AI keeps some of the data you share to train and improve its models, after reducing personal information. An opt-out ("Improve the Model for Everyone") is described for users in the EEA and UK; the article does not confirm it elsewhere, so Indian users should assume chats may be used. You can export your data or delete your account from the app or website, and the October 2026 sale notice says privacy and security practices are unchanged for now. The help centre does not set out commercial reuse rights for chat output, so treat it as a personal entertainment product.

Character AI vs ChatGPT (and Janitor AI)

ChatGPT is a general assistant built for work: documents, code, research, images and an API, with free and paid tiers. You can roleplay in it, but it lacks a huge library of community-made characters and multi-bot group chat. Character.AI is the reverse: excellent for character fiction, useless for spreadsheets. Janitor AI, the usual comparison among roleplay users, lets you bring your own API key or use its free JanitorLLM, and it moderates far less, which is why adults who want unfiltered roleplay pick it. Character.AI is safer and more polished, but stricter.

Character AI free alternatives worth trying

• Janitor AI: free with JanitorLLM, adults only in practice, more freedom, less stability.
• ChatGPT free tier: fine for one-off roleplay, plus real work.
• Google Gemini: Gems let you save a custom persona prompt for free.

Limitations and common problems

If Character.AI is not loading or shows a waiting room, the service is busy. Free users are queued at peak times, and c.ai+ skips the queue. For outage news, check the official social channels listed in the help centre or the r/CharacterAI subreddit. Other limits: characters forget older details, there is no API, the filter is strict, and the long-term future of the service depends on the sale.

How to get started

• Install the Character AI app from Google Play or the App Store, or open character.ai in a browser. It is available in India with INR pricing.
• Sign up and complete the age check if asked (Settings, Advanced, Verify Age).
• Set a persona, then pick a character from the feed or search.
• To make your own, tap Create, choose Quick mode, add a name, greeting and short description, and choose public or private.
• Try the free plan for a week before paying, and buy monthly, not yearly.
