Our verdict

4.1out of 5

If your company already pays for Google Workspace Business or Enterprise, AppSheet Core is effectively free and is the quickest way to put a Sheets-based process on staff phones. Standalone buyers get fair value at $5 to $10 per user, but connectors, AI tasks and enterprise sign-in need the $20 Enterprise Plus tier.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is AppSheet?

Most teams that try AppSheet already own a licence for it without knowing. Google bundles AppSheet Core into every Business edition of Google Workspace, from Business Starter upwards, so a company paying $7 per user a month for email can build a stock-tracking or site-inspection app at no extra cost. That bundling shapes the whole question of appsheet no-code app builder pricing: for many Indian SMEs the real decision is not whether to pay, but whether to move up to Enterprise Plus for database connectors, AI tasks and stronger governance.

AppSheet was started in Seattle in 2014 by Praveen Seshadri and Brian Sabino, and Google Cloud bought it in January 2020. It turns a spreadsheet or database into a working no-code app that runs in a browser and inside the AppSheet app on Android and iOS. The typical user is an operations lead, not a developer: someone who keeps a Google Sheets file of deliveries, complaints, assets or field visits and wants staff to fill it from a phone instead of WhatsApp messages.

AppSheet pricing per user, plan by plan

The official pricing page lists three per-user plans plus a per-app plan for public apps. All figures are in US dollars per user per month; Google shows no rupee prices for AppSheet, and the page notes that billing is monthly or annual depending on the plan.

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free (prototype)$0Full editor, up to 10 test users, no time limit
Starter$5/user/moBasic apps and automation, Sheets, Excel, Airtable and Smartsheet sources, email support, 5 AppSheet databases of 2,500 rows each
Core$10/user/moSecurity filters, barcode and NFC, scheduled automation, webhooks, branded apps, delta sync, 10 databases
Enterprise Plus$20/user/moSQL, BigQuery, Salesforce and REST/OData connectors, OCR and ML models, Okta or Active Directory sign-in, Gemini AI tasks, priority support, 200 databases of 200,000 rows
Publisher Pro$50/app/moPublic app with no sign-in, unlimited users, no security filters

One detail catches buyers out. Licences are counted against every unique person who signs in to any app you deploy, not against the people who build them. If an app does not ask users to sign in, each device that opens it counts as a separate guest user. A 40-person delivery crew on Core therefore costs $400 a month as a standalone purchase, or nothing extra if those 40 people already hold Workspace Business seats. Enterprise Plus can only be bought through a Workspace admin account; companies outside Workspace can create one through Cloud Identity.

Which Workspace editions already include AppSheet Core

Google's AppSheet help centre lists the editions that give each domain-verified user a Core licence: Business Starter, Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus; Education Standard and Plus; Enterprise Essentials Plus; Frontline Starter and Standard; and Workspace for Nonprofits. The free Essentials Starter tier is not on that list. For an Indian company already on Business Starter at $7 per user a month (annual plan), that means role-based access, barcode scanning, scheduled reports and offline-ready mobile apps arrive with the email subscription. The step up to Enterprise Plus is a separate $20 per user purchase.

What the AppSheet free plan limits you to

There is no permanent free production tier. Instead, the editor and automation designer are free to use, and you can share a prototype with up to 10 test users for as long as you like. That is enough for a founder to build an attendance app, hand it to a few supervisors, and fix the logic before anyone pays. The moment you deploy the app for real use beyond those testers, every signed-in user needs a paid or Workspace-included licence. Gemini app creation also needs a paid licence, so a fully free account does not get the AI schema builder.

An AppSheet Google Sheets app tutorial in five steps

  • Tidy the sheet first. Put column headers in row 1 of every tab, one table per tab, and add a unique ID column so that records entered on different phones never clash.
  • Create the app. In the AppSheet editor, start a new app from your existing data and pick the spreadsheet. AppSheet reads the columns and proposes a type for each one, which you can change.
  • Shape the views. Add a deck or table view for lists, a form for entry and a map if rows carry locations. A Barcode-type column turns the phone camera into a barcode scanner for stock or asset tags (Core and above).
  • Add rules. Use security filters so a sales rep sees only rows where the owner email matches the signed-in user. This is AppSheet's form of row-level security and it needs Core or Enterprise Plus.
  • Share and deploy. Invite testers by email, collect feedback, then run the deployment check and assign licences.

Paid Workspace users can skip the blank-sheet stage: Gemini in AppSheet asks for a plain-English description such as "track machine breakdowns across three plants" and proposes tables and columns, which you then refine by hand.

Bots, AI tasks and the automation layer

AppSheet automation is built from bots. A bot listens for an event (a row added or changed, a schedule, a Google Forms response, a Gmail message or a Chat interaction) and runs a process made of steps. Steps can send an email, SMS or push notification, change data, or call a linked Apps Script function. OCR and Google's Document AI, which can read fields from scanned invoices, sit in Enterprise Plus.

The newer piece is the Gemini-powered AI task. Inside a bot it can pull values out of a file or text, summarise it, or sort an entry into a category, for example tagging customer complaints as billing, delivery or product. Google's plan comparison puts Gemini inside AppSheet solutions in Enterprise Plus only, and usage is metered in Gemini credits, which admins manage from a separate help page. Read that page before rolling AI steps out to hundreds of rows a day. Gemini for app creation, by contrast, is open to every paid AppSheet account.

How offline sync behaves in the field

For field teams in areas with patchy 4G, this is often the deciding feature. Offline use is part of the basic feature set on every plan, so once the app has loaded on a phone, staff can keep adding records with no signal and the changes go to the server when the connection returns. Core and Enterprise Plus add delta sync, which cuts the amount of data each sync has to move.

Not everything travels offline. Before a rollout, read Google's Offline and Sync help page to see which media, file and map features need a live connection, and have a few staff run the app for a day with mobile data switched off.

AppSheet vs Power Apps for a Google or Microsoft shop

Learning curveGentle; app built from data in minutesSteeper; canvas formulas and model-driven apps

The choice usually follows the email system. If your team lives in Gmail and Sheets, AppSheet is cheaper to start and simpler to learn, and the Core bundle removes most of the cost argument. Microsoft's platform goes further for complex enterprise apps, ties into Dataverse and Power Automate, and gives pixel-level canvas control that AppSheet's view-based designer does not. Microsoft also publishes an INR price, which AppSheet does not. Glide and Zoho Creator are other options worth a look.

Can AppSheet apps go on the Play Store?

Yes, with work. By default users install the generic AppSheet app and open your app inside it, or add a home-screen shortcut. Core and Enterprise Plus include branded apps: AppSheet produces an Android build carrying your app's name and icon, which you can publish on Google Play under your own developer account or hand out internally. Plan for a Play Console account and a review cycle on top of the build itself. iOS branded apps have a separate process in the help centre.

Security, data ownership and what Gemini sees

Customer data stays in your own source, whether a Sheet in your Drive or your Cloud SQL instance; AppSheet's site says the customer keeps control of it. Core adds on-device encryption, role-based user management and security filters, and Enterprise Plus adds Okta, Active Directory and OpenID Connect sign-in, team management and governance controls over what creators can connect. Google's AppSheet pages do not spell out whether Gemini prompts are used for model training, so regulated firms should read the generative AI terms that apply to their Workspace or AppSheet contract before switching it on. Apps for internal and commercial business use are the core purpose of every paid plan.

Where AppSheet falls short

Design freedom is limited; apps look like AppSheet apps unless you put real effort into branding. Rows on Starter and Core AppSheet databases cap at 2,500 per database, so growing data needs Sheets, SQL or Enterprise Plus. Per-user licensing becomes expensive for apps aimed at many outside users, and Publisher Pro removes sign-in and security filters entirely. Priority support is reserved for Enterprise Plus, and there is no INR price list, so Indian buyers pay in dollars or through a Workspace reseller.

Is AppSheet no-code app builder pricing worth it for your team?

Check your Workspace edition first. If it is Business Starter or above, open AppSheet with your work account, build one internal app from an existing sheet, and test it with a few colleagues on their phones, including a spell with mobile data switched off. Move to Enterprise Plus only when you hit a concrete wall: a SQL or BigQuery source, Okta sign-in, more than 2,500 rows in the built-in database, or AI tasks reading invoices. Small businesses outside Workspace should compare $5 Starter seats against simply adding Workspace Business Starter, which brings Core licences along with email.

AppSheet FAQ

What is AppSheet?

AppSheet is Google's no-code platform for turning spreadsheets and databases into mobile and web apps with forms, views and automations. Google Cloud acquired it in 2020, and it now sits inside Google Workspace. Typical apps cover inspections, inventory, field visits and approvals.

Is AppSheet free?

Building is free, and you can share a prototype with up to 10 test users with no time limit. Deployed apps need a paid licence for every signed-in user. Most paid Google Workspace editions, including Business Starter, already include AppSheet Core at no extra cost.

How much does AppSheet cost per user?

According to Google's pricing page, Starter is $5, Core is $10 and Enterprise Plus is $20 per user per month. Publisher Pro, for public apps without sign-in, is $50 per app per month. Google does not list INR prices for AppSheet.

How do I create an app from Google Sheets in AppSheet?

Make sure each tab has headers in row 1 and a unique ID column. In the AppSheet editor choose Create, App, Start with existing data, then select the spreadsheet. AppSheet suggests column types and views, which you then adjust before sharing with testers.

AppSheet vs Power Apps: which is better?

AppSheet is cheaper to start ($5 Starter, or Core included with Workspace) and easier for spreadsheet users. Power Apps Premium costs $20 per user a month (₹1,665 in India, billed yearly) and suits Microsoft 365 companies that need Dataverse and deeper custom design. Pick the one that matches your email and file system.

Does AppSheet work offline?

Yes. Offline use is a basic feature on every paid plan: once the app has loaded on a phone, staff can keep entering data without a signal and changes sync when the connection returns. Some media, file and map features need a connection, so test with mobile data off before a rollout.

Can AppSheet publish to the Play Store?

Yes, through branded apps on Core or Enterprise Plus. AppSheet produces an Android build with your app's name and icon, which you publish under your own Google Play developer account or share internally. Otherwise users run your app inside the free AppSheet app.

Is AppSheet secure?

Data stays in your own source such as Sheets, Drive or a SQL database. Core adds on-device encryption, role-based user management and security filters for row-level access, while Enterprise Plus adds Okta, Active Directory and OpenID Connect sign-in plus governance controls. Security filters are not available on Starter or Publisher Pro.

What are the best AppSheet alternatives?

Microsoft Power Apps is the main rival for larger companies on Microsoft 365. Glide suits polished apps built on spreadsheets, and Zoho Creator fits businesses already using Zoho tools. Compare per-user pricing carefully, since all of them charge for app users.

Who should use AppSheet?

It suits operations, sales and field teams already on Google Workspace who track work in Google Sheets and want a phone app without hiring developers. It is less suited to consumer apps with thousands of public users or teams needing fully custom interfaces.
