Our verdict

4.1out of 5

Wix is a sensible choice for Indian small businesses that want a professional site, bookings or a small store without maintaining servers. It costs more than DIY WordPress over time and locks you into its hosting, so content-heavy or fast-scaling businesses should look at WordPress or Shopify instead.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Wix?

Wix is a hosted website builder from Wix.com Ltd., the Tel Aviv company that has been running since 2006 and now reports more than 300 million users. You pick a template or describe your business to an AI, edit pages visually, and Wix handles hosting, security patches and SSL. If you are weighing wix vs wordpress for small business, the short version is this: Wix trades flexibility for convenience, and for many shops, clinics, consultants and coaches in India that is a fair trade.

This review is based on Wix's own pricing page, blog, help center and press releases as checked in October 2026. We have not run hands-on tests, and we say so where a detail comes from forum reports rather than Wix itself.

Who Wix is for

Wix suits owners who want a good-looking site live in a weekend without hiring a developer: a salon taking appointments, a boutique selling 40 products, a CA firm that needs a contact form and a blog. It also suits freelancers and small agencies through Wix Studio, a separate workspace built for client work. It is a weaker fit for content-heavy publishers, anyone who wants to move their site to another host later, or developers who prefer full server access.

Key features in practice

There are now three ways to build. The classic Wix Editor is a free-form drag-and-drop canvas where you can put any element anywhere. Wix Studio adds responsive breakpoints, custom CSS, reusable design systems and client billing tools for agencies. The newest option is the Wix Harmony editor, which Wix launched in January 2026 and now promotes as the home of its AI website builder. Inside it sits Aria, a built-in AI agent that can generate pages and sections from a prompt using your site and business details, after which you refine things by hand. Wix's help center says Harmony is rolling out gradually alongside the classic Editor, works in English only for now, and is still waiting on some features, including the CMS, Wix Chat and custom code.

Older guides mention Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence). Wix stopped supporting ADI on 10 November 2024, moved live ADI sites into the Wix Editor and points new users to its AI website builder instead, so treat ADI tutorials as out of date.

Business tools are where Wix earns its fee. Wix Bookings handles appointments, staff calendars and class schedules. Wix Stores covers products, inventory, discounts and order tracking. There are also apps for events, restaurants, blogs, memberships and pricing plans. The Wix App Market adds hundreds of third-party apps for reviews, live chat, accounting and marketing. For custom logic, Wix Velo gives you a JavaScript environment with database collections and backend code, so a developer can extend a site without leaving the platform.

On SEO, the help articles that once covered Wix SEO Wiz now describe the SEO Setup Checklist, a step-by-step guide inside the dashboard. You get editable meta tags, structured data, automatic sitemaps, 301 redirects and server-side rendering. In plain terms, Wix is good enough for local and small-business SEO. It is not a weak spot any more, though WordPress still gives specialists more control over technical details.

A mobile companion, the Wix app on Android and iOS, lets you reply to chats, fulfil orders, check in booking clients and make light edits from your phone.

Wix premium plans price in India and globally

Wix sells four Premium plans for regular sites. Prices below are the US per-month rates on yearly billing, as given in Wix's own premium plans guide (updated June 2026). The pricing page notes that prices and currency vary by location and that USD is shown for reference only. When we loaded it on 16 October 2026, it showed $17.77, $29.77, $39.77 and $159.77 with a "price includes GST" label, while also saying the final tax depends on your billing address.

PlanPrice (yearly billing)StorageWhat it adds
Free$0500 MBwixsite.com address, Wix ads, no selling
Light$17/mo2 GBCustom domain, free domain for 1 year, 2 collaborators
Core$29/mo50 GBAccept payments, basic eCommerce, bookings, 5 collaborators
Business$39/mo100 GBStandard eCommerce, more marketing tools, 10 collaborators
Business Elite$159/moUnlimitedAdvanced eCommerce, developer platform, 100 collaborators

For Indian buyers, the honest answer is that Wix shows your final price and currency at checkout, and we could not confirm a stable public INR list price, so we have not printed one. Check the checkout page for the GST-inclusive total. Yearly plans are paid in full upfront. The free domain is a one-year voucher for a new domain bought through Wix, must be claimed within 60 days and does not cover renewals, so budget for year two.

So how much does a Wix website cost for a typical Indian small business? A brochure site needs Light. Anyone taking payments or bookings needs Core at minimum. Add the domain renewal and any paid apps from the App Market, and the real yearly bill climbs above the headline price.

Wix free plan limitations

The free plan is real and has no time limit. Wix's own blog lists the catch: 500 MB storage, 1 GB bandwidth, a wixsite.com sub-address, Wix branding and ads, no Google Analytics, and no way to sell or take payments. You do get hosting and SSL. It works well for testing templates, building a portfolio draft, or showing a client a mock-up. It is not good enough for a business that wants customers to trust it, because the address and ads look unprofessional.

Wix ecommerce review: selling and payments in India

Wix Stores is solid for small catalogues: product variants, inventory, abandoned-cart emails, coupons and multi-channel selling on higher plans. Selling starts at Core. Indian sellers connect a local gateway. Wix's list of available payment providers currently names Razorpay, Cashfree Payments and PayU India for businesses in India (a March 2024 Wix announcement also mentioned Airpay, Easebuzz and Nimbbl, but they do not appear on that list now). Razorpay says its Wix integration accepts UPI, cards, wallets and netbanking, so yes, you can take UPI payments on Wix through a local gateway. Razorpay works in INR only, and your Wix site currency must match. One gap: community threads on the Wix Studio forum report trouble collecting recurring INR payments for subscription-style pricing plans, so check this before you build a membership business on Wix.

Against Shopify, Wix is better when the store is one part of a wider business site with bookings, a blog and events. Shopify is the better pick if selling is the whole business, you need large catalogues, or you want deeper app support for logistics and Indian marketplaces.

Wix vs squarespace

Squarespace has tighter, more opinionated templates and a strong design reputation, but it offers less freedom to place elements and a smaller app ecosystem. Wix gives you more business apps (bookings, restaurants, events), the Velo code layer, and documented Indian gateways such as Razorpay. If you lean towards Squarespace, confirm that its payment processors work for an Indian business before you commit. For most Indian small businesses, Wix is the more practical of the two.

Wix vs WordPress: which is better for a small business?

WordPress (the free, self-hosted WordPress.org software) powers a huge share of the web. It costs nothing to download, but you pay for hosting, a domain, premium themes and plugins, and someone's time to update and secure it. In return you own your files, can move hosts any time, and can build almost anything with WooCommerce and thousands of plugins.

  • Setup time: Wix is faster for a non-technical owner. WordPress usually needs a hosting account, a theme and several plugins.
  • Running cost: Cheap shared hosting can make WordPress cheaper in year one, but paid plugins and developer help add up.
  • Maintenance: Wix patches everything for you. On WordPress, plugin updates and backups are your job.
  • Portability: You cannot export a Wix site to another host. A WordPress site can move freely.
  • Growth: Large blogs, membership sites and complex stores scale better on WordPress.

Our take on wix vs wordpress for small business

Choose Wix if you want one monthly bill, little maintenance and built-in bookings or a small store. Choose WordPress if content is your main traffic engine, you have a developer on call, or you want full ownership of the code. For a solo founder in India without tech help, Wix is usually the lower-risk start.

Privacy, data and commercial use

Wix's privacy policy (effective 18 June 2026) explains what account and usage data it collects; it does not clearly address whether site content trains Wix's AI models, so read the terms if that matters to you. You can use Wix commercially on any plan, but selling requires a paid plan. The status page at status.wix.com publishes uptime and incident history.

Limitations to know

  • Switching templates after launch means rebuilding content on a new design.
  • No export to another platform; you are tied to Wix hosting, and moving later means rebuilding pages by hand elsewhere.
  • Harmony and the AI tools are still maturing and are English-only for now.
  • App Market add-ons often carry their own monthly fees.
  • Heavy pages with many animations and apps can load slowly on budget phones and patchy 4G, so keep layouts lean.
  • Recurring INR billing for memberships has been unreliable for some Indian users, according to forum reports.

How to get started

Sign up free, then either answer the AI prompts or pick a template in the Wix Editor. Build your main pages, add Bookings or Stores if needed, and test on mobile. When you are ready, buy a plan (Core if you will take payments), then connect a custom domain from the Domains section of your dashboard: buy one through Wix, or point an existing domain from GoDaddy or another registrar by updating its name servers or DNS records. Connect Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU India under payment settings, run the SEO checklist, and publish.

If it does not work out, Wix offers a 14-day money-back guarantee on new Premium and Studio site plans. Cancel from your subscriptions page within 14 days of purchase for a full refund to the original payment method; domains are excluded, and renewals and upgrades do not qualify. Refunds can take up to 45 business days.

Best Wix alternatives

WordPress.org with WooCommerce for control, Shopify for dedicated stores, Squarespace for design-led portfolios, and Hostinger's builder or Zoho Sites if budget is the main concern. Each wins in one area; Wix's strength is doing many small-business jobs in one dashboard.

Wix FAQ

Is Wix good for small business?

Yes, for most small businesses that want a professional site without a developer. Wix bundles hosting, security, bookings, a store and marketing tools in one dashboard. It is less suited to large content sites or businesses that want to move hosts later.

How much does a Wix website cost in India?

Wix lists Light at $17 a month and Core at $29 a month on yearly billing in US dollars, and Core is the entry plan for taking payments. Indian visitors see a local price at checkout, with the pricing page showing GST-inclusive figures. Add domain renewal after year one and any paid apps to estimate the full cost.

Is the Wix free plan good enough?

Only for testing or personal projects. The free plan gives 500 MB storage, 1 GB bandwidth, a wixsite.com address and Wix ads, with no ability to sell or take payments. A business site should be on a paid plan with its own domain.

How do I connect a custom domain to Wix?

Upgrade to any Premium plan first, since the free plan cannot use a custom domain. Then open Domains in your dashboard and either buy a domain from Wix or connect one you own by changing name servers or DNS records at your registrar. Propagation can take up to 48 hours.

Is Wix good for SEO?

Yes, for local and small-business SEO. Wix offers editable meta tags, structured data, automatic sitemaps, 301 redirects, server-side rendering and a guided SEO setup checklist. WordPress still gives specialists more fine-grained control.

Wix vs WordPress: which is better?

Wix is better if you want a fast setup, low maintenance and built-in business apps under one bill. WordPress is better if you need full ownership, portability, large content operations or deep customisation through plugins. For non-technical small business owners, Wix is usually the safer start.

Wix vs Shopify: which is better for an online store?

Shopify is the stronger choice when selling is the whole business, especially with large catalogues and complex logistics. Wix works better when a store sits alongside bookings, a blog or events on one site. Both support Indian payment gateways.

Can I accept UPI payments on Wix?

Yes, through a supported Indian gateway. Wix's help center lists Razorpay, Cashfree Payments and PayU India for businesses in India, and Razorpay says its Wix integration accepts UPI, cards, wallets and netbanking. You need a Premium plan that supports payments, which starts at Core.

What are the best Wix alternatives?

WordPress.org with WooCommerce for control and ownership, Shopify for dedicated online stores, and Squarespace for design-focused sites. Budget builders such as Hostinger's builder or Zoho Sites suit very simple sites. The right pick depends on whether you prioritise selling, content or convenience.

How do I cancel a Wix Premium plan and get a refund?

Go to your Wix subscriptions page, select the plan and cancel within 14 days of buying a new Premium plan to get a full refund. Domains, renewals and upgrades of an existing plan are not covered. Refunds go to the original payment method and can take up to 45 business days.
