Our verdict

4.1out of 5

Framer is the quickest way for a designer to turn a layout into a fast, good-looking marketing site, and Agents make first drafts cheap. Basic at $10 a month suits small sites, but most businesses will end up on Pro with paid seats. Choose Webflow or Shopify instead if you need a large CMS or an online store.

What is Framer?

In June 2026 Framer shipped version 3.0, which puts AI agents on the canvas that can lay out a page, write a code component or fill a CMS collection from one prompt. The plan list is now Free, Basic, Pro and Enterprise, and Framer's support docs file the old Scale tier under legacy plans. This review sets out Framer website builder pricing and limits as they stand in October 2026, and then asks a simple question: is it worth paying for a startup landing page, a design portfolio or an agency client site?

A design canvas that publishes straight to the web

Framer B.V. is an Amsterdam company started by Koen Bok and Jorn van Dijk. It began as a prototyping tool for designers. You draw on a free-form canvas, much as you would in Figma, and the Publish button turns that canvas into a hosted site with no hand-off to a developer. TechCrunch reported in August 2025 that it had passed half a million monthly active users.

Its core users are designers, freelancers, small studios and startups whose design team wants to change marketing pages without filing a ticket. A big publisher or a shop with thousands of SKUs will find the caps below too tight.

Framer website builder pricing and limits, plan by plan

Plans are sold per site, with editor seats billed on top for the workspace. Figures are from framer.com/pricing with yearly billing selected.

The free tier's 1,000 pages look generous until you notice it is meant for non-commercial use and runs on a Framer subdomain. Basic is the real entry ticket for a business. Its 30-page ceiling cannot be raised, so a company that expects a blog or a growing docs section should budget for Pro from day one. Pro also adds staging, branching with previews, redirects and 90 days of analytics (Basic keeps 30).

Overages are handled gently: bandwidth can be exceeded for one month after an email warning.

What editor seats and add-ons do to the monthly bill

The workspace owner and comment-only viewers are free. Every extra person who designs and publishes costs $20 a month, and a content editor who only touches the CMS, localization and on-page text costs $10. Basic and Pro cap paid edit access at 10 seats; Enterprise lifts that cap. Added editors are billed monthly even on annual plans.

Pro add-ons are priced in blocks: $20 per 100 extra pages, $40 per 10 extra collections, $20 per 10,000 CMS items and $40 per 100 GB of bandwidth. Extra locales cost $20 each (up to 20), and AI translation inside them spends credits. Convert (A/B tests and funnels) is $50 per 500,000 events, and Advanced Hosting (rewrites, firewall rules, security headers) is $200.

A small agency site on Pro with two extra designers and Hindi plus Spanish locales therefore lands near $110 a month before tax ($30 + $40 + $40).

Framer free plan, custom domain and the 1 GB ceiling

The short answer for anyone hoping to run a business site for nothing: you cannot. Free sites live on a Framer address such as yourname.framer.website, get 1 GB of bandwidth, cap file uploads at 5 MB and allow up to three editors. You also get one locale and 500 AI credits to test the agents. Fine for a portfolio draft or learning the tool.

Connecting your own domain needs Basic or higher. On yearly billing Framer adds a complimentary domain, redeemed once through Hover, and the help docs warn that redeeming it removes the refund option. If you already own a domain, open Site Settings, then Hosting, then Domains, and add the records Framer shows. For a root domain that means two A records pointing to 31.43.160.6 and 31.43.161.6, plus a CNAME for www pointing to sites.framer.app. Remove leftover parking and AAAA records (Framer does not serve IPv6, and AAAA can block the SSL certificate) and set any Cloudflare record to DNS only. Propagation can take up to 48 hours.

Is Framer's AI site generator worth the credits?

Framer's first serious AI layout tool was Wireframer, released in May 2025. Framer 3.0 widened that idea into Agents, which can design whole pages, set up breakpoints, add effects, create components, write code, hook pages to the CMS and read your site analytics. The model picker on framer.com/ai lists OpenAI GPT and Anthropic Claude models, and you can also connect outside coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor or Codex while that feature is in preview.

Every agent action draws on a shared pool of credits: 1,000 a month on Basic and 3,000 on Pro, with bigger tiers available. AI translation also spends credits, though manual translation stays available when the pool runs dry. Agencies using agents across many clients will likely need a bigger credit tier.

One policy point matters for client work. Framer's AI notice says inputs and outputs from non-Enterprise workspaces may be used to train Framer's own models unless training is switched off in Workspace settings. Enterprise data is excluded, and third-party model providers may not train on customer content. The notice treats inputs and outputs as your content, which you are responsible for, and warns that two users can get the same or similar output.

Framer CMS: how to use collections for a blog or case studies

The Framer CMS feels like a structured spreadsheet. Click the CMS button in the toolbar and create a collection, or start from the sample blog data. Each column is a field such as title, slug, formatted text or image and, since September 2026, a List field for repeating items like FAQs. Drop it on the canvas from the CMS Content section of the Insert menu to get layers bound to your data. In the Pages panel, the plus button next to CMS creates an Index page and a Detail page; the Detail page acts as the template for every item.

To move an existing blog across, attach a CSV in the agent chat and it maps columns to fields. Framer's help docs advise checking dates, references and images afterwards. Basic allows only two collections and 1,000 items, which suits a small blog plus a team page but not a site with case studies, jobs, authors and docs.

Components, variants and breakpoints for design teams

Reusable components hold a navbar or pricing card in one place, and variants give each component hover, pressed or mobile states without duplicate layers. Breakpoints let you adjust layout for desktop, tablet and phone separately.

Developers have more room than the no-code label suggests. Code components are custom React components with property controls that designers can drag onto the canvas. The developer docs also cover Framer plugins (small apps that work inside the editor and CMS), a Server API for automated publishing and a Fetch feature for pulling live data from an API endpoint. Framer Motion, the popular React animation library, began inside Framer but became the independent Motion project in November 2024.

Localization gives each locale its own translated canvas and CMS content, with a New, To Review and Done filter for reviewers.

Framer vs Webflow for a growing marketing site

Webflow's Basic site plan is $15 a month billed yearly with 300 static pages but no CMS, and Premium is $25 with 40 collections and 20,000 CMS items. Seats are the bigger gap: a full Webflow seat costs $39 a month against Framer's $20 editor.

Framer wins on speed of design and on AI, and its canvas feels natural to anyone trained on Figma. Webflow gives more structural control: a class-based style system, a deeper CMS at lower tiers and dedicated ecommerce plans from $29 a month, something Framer's pricing page does not offer. A solo designer building portfolios or launch pages will usually be happier in Framer. A marketing team planning hundreds of CMS pages, or a store, should look hard at Webflow. Wix and Squarespace stay simpler for owners who never want to think about layout.

Can Framer sites rank in Google?

Yes, with the usual caveat that content and links decide rankings, not the builder. Framer generates a sitemap.xml for every published site and keeps it current as you publish. Titles and descriptions are set per page, canonical tags are added automatically for connected domains, and there is a setting for custom canonical URLs when the site sits behind a reverse proxy. Pro adds redirects for site migrations. CDN hosting spans 20 locations on Basic and 300+ on Pro, which helps speed for Indian visitors.

Billing in dollars from an Indian card

There is no rupee price list. Plans are charged in US dollars by credit card, with PayPal offered in some regions and bank transfer for Enterprise. Payments run through Stripe or Paddle depending on region, and the pricing page says applicable sales tax is added at checkout based on location. In practice you need an Indian card enabled for international recurring payments. Framer's refund policy allows requests within 7 days of the first purchase (14 days in the EU and Turkey), and a mid-cycle downgrade turns unused value into non-refundable account credit.

When a published Framer site will not show your latest edits

First, confirm you published to production rather than to staging or a branch on Pro. Next, reload with a hard refresh or open the page in a private window. If the problem appears only on your custom domain, recheck DNS: a stray A record, an AAAA record or a Cloudflare proxy can send visitors somewhere other than Framer's hosting.

Gaps to check before you commit

  • No native store or checkout on the pricing page, so ecommerce means embedding a third-party service.
  • Basic's 30 pages are fixed, and even Pro tops out at 700 pages with add-ons.
  • Paid edit access stops at 10 seats below Enterprise.
  • Desktop apps exist for Mac and Windows, but there is no mobile editor.
  • Basic and Pro get email and in-app support (Framer's help docs quote first replies within 24 to 72 hours); Slack or Teams support is for Enterprise only.

A sensible first week on Framer

Build on the Free plan until the design is settled. Set up your components and two or three breakpoints before adding content, then create the CMS collections you know you need and import real copy, not placeholder text. Switch off model training in Workspace settings before using agents on client material. Buy Basic only when the site is ready for its domain, and move to Pro the moment you need redirects, staging or more than two collections.

Framer FAQ

What is Framer used for?

Framer is used to design and publish marketing websites, portfolios, landing pages and small blogs from a visual canvas. Designers build the layout, and the same file is hosted as a live site on Framer's CDN. Version 3.0 adds AI agents that can draft pages, components and CMS content.

How much does Framer cost per month?

According to framer.com/pricing, site plans are Free, Basic at $10 a month and Pro at $30 a month with yearly billing, plus custom Enterprise pricing. Extra editors cost $20 a month each and content editors $10. Add-ons such as AI translation locales ($20 each) and extra pages or bandwidth on Pro raise the total.

Can I use Framer for free?

Yes. The Free plan includes a Framer subdomain, 1 GB of bandwidth, 10 CMS collections, 5 MB uploads, up to three editors and 500 AI credits to try. Framer describes it as meant for non-commercial use, and a custom domain needs a paid plan.

How do I connect a custom domain to Framer?

Upgrade the site to Basic or Pro, then open Site Settings, Hosting, Domains and enter your domain. For a root domain add two A records (31.43.160.6 and 31.43.161.6) and a CNAME for www pointing to sites.framer.app. Remove any AAAA or parking records and set Cloudflare records to DNS only; changes can take up to 48 hours.

Is Framer good for SEO?

It covers the technical basics well. Framer auto-generates a sitemap, lets you set titles and descriptions per page, adds canonical tags for connected domains and offers redirects on Pro. Rankings still depend on your content, page structure and backlinks.

Framer vs Webflow: which is better?

Framer is quicker for designers and has stronger built-in AI, with editor seats at $20 a month. Webflow offers a deeper CMS on its $25 Premium plan, a class-based style system and dedicated ecommerce plans. Pick Framer for design-led marketing sites and Webflow for large CMS builds or online stores.

Can I pay for Framer in India?

Yes, but prices are in US dollars, not rupees. Framer accepts credit cards, with PayPal in some regions, and payments are processed by Stripe or Paddle. Tax is added at checkout based on location, and your card needs international recurring payments enabled.

What are the best Framer alternatives?

Webflow is the closest alternative for professional marketing sites with a deeper CMS and ecommerce. Wix and Squarespace suit owners who want simpler templates and built-in stores. WordPress with a page builder gives the most control if you can manage hosting yourself.

How do I fix a Framer site not updating after publish?

Check that you published to production rather than to staging or a branch. Hard-refresh the page or open it in a private window to rule out browser caching. If only the custom domain is stale, look for extra A, AAAA or proxied Cloudflare records, and check framerstatus.com for incidents.

Who is Framer best for?

Framer suits designers, freelancers, small studios and startups that want polished, animated marketing sites without a developer. Its pricing page positions Basic for students, freelancers and small studios and Pro for agencies, startups and scale-ups. Large content sites and online stores are better served elsewhere.
