Our verdict

3.9out of 5

SendGrid is a dependable email API with strong docs, SMTP relay and a built-in marketing tool, and Essentials 50K is good value at $19.95. The loss of the permanent free plan and the jump to Pro pricing mean hobbyists and cost-first senders should look at Mailgun's free tier or Amazon SES first.

What is SendGrid?

Since late March 2025, new SendGrid accounts no longer start on a forever-free tier. They get a 60-day trial capped at 100 emails a day, and once those two months end the account has to move to a paid plan or stop sending. That one change reshapes how you should read SendGrid email API pricing and free plan details in late 2026, because the cheapest way to keep mail flowing after the trial is Essentials at $19.95 a month. It is no longer a zero-cost tool for side projects.

Email API tiers and monthly volumes, October 2026

Twilio's Email API pricing page gives only "from" prices ($19.95 for Essentials, $89.95 for Pro) plus a volume selector. Prices for higher monthly volumes appear only in that selector, so check it for your exact send count before you commit. Billing is in US dollars only (no rupee price list), and taxes and overages can be added.

PlanMonthly emailsPriceWhat changes at this tier
Free Trial100 per day for 60 days$01 Event Webhook, 1 teammate, 3 days of activity search
Essentials 50K50,000$19.95/moShared IPs, 2 Event Webhooks, template editor
Pro 100K100,000$89.95/mo1 dedicated IP, subusers, SSO, 2,500 email validations
Pro, higher volumesAbove 100,000Priced in Twilio's selector5 Event Webhooks, 7 days of activity search
PremierHigh volume (selector goes to 5M+)Custom quote5,000 validations, paid email programme management

The jump that matters is from Essentials to Pro, which starts at $89.95 for 100,000 emails. Pro adds a dedicated IP, subuser accounts for clients or product lines, single sign-on, up to 1,000 teammates and 60 email testing credits a month.

The SendGrid free plan limit of 100 emails per day now ends after 60 days

Older blog posts still describe a permanent 100-a-day free plan. It is gone. A Twilio changelog entry dated 27 May 2025 announced the retirement of both the free Email API plan and the free Marketing Campaigns plan for existing users, with a 60-day grace window. After it closed, sending paused on unpaid accounts and any account holding more than 100 contacts had its contact lists deleted.

So is SendGrid still free? Only for the trial. You can send up to 100 messages a day, roughly 6,000 across the full 60 days, with no credit card. That covers domain setup, dynamic templates and a staging webhook, not a live product.

Who actually sends through SendGrid, with an Indian SaaS example

Picture a Pune invoicing app that sends invoice PDFs, payment reminders, login alerts and a weekly digest, which comes to about 35,000 emails a month. Essentials 50K covers that at $19.95. Replies to invoices can come back through Inbound Parse, which accepts mail on a subdomain you point at SendGrid with an MX record and posts the parsed message, attachments included, to your server as an HTTP request.

SendGrid works normally from India. Sign-up, the dashboard, the API and both SMTP endpoints are open, and the main friction is payment. Some Indian cards reject recurring foreign charges unless international use and standing instructions are switched on.

First message through SendGrid Web API v3 from Node.js

The SendGrid web API v3 accepts a JSON POST at https://api.sendgrid.com/v3/mail/send with your API key as a Bearer token. Basic authentication with a username and password is no longer accepted. For a Node.js project the short path looks like this:

  • Create an API key with at least Mail Send permission and store it in an environment variable, never in your repo.
  • Verify a sender. Single Sender Verification works for testing, but authenticate your whole domain before going live.
  • Run npm install @sendgrid/mail, call setApiKey with the key, then pass an object with to, from, subject, text and html to send.
  • Switch to a dynamic template by giving a template ID that starts with d- and a dynamic_template_data object for the Handlebars variables.

Official libraries also exist for PHP, Python, Java, C#, Go and Ruby. Per the API reference, one request can carry up to 1,000 personalizations, a send can be scheduled at most 72 hours ahead, and Twilio's getting-started guide caps the whole message, attachments included, at 20MB.

SendGrid SMTP relay setup for WordPress plugins and older apps

WordPress mail plugins, Django and Laravel mailers and ERP systems often speak SMTP rather than REST. SendGrid SMTP needs four values. The host is smtp.sendgrid.net, the username is the literal word apikey, the password is your API key, and the port is 587 with TLS, which Twilio recommends. Port 465 handles SSL, while 25 and 2525 also work where a host blocks 587.

The docs allow up to 5,000 messages over one SMTP connection and up to 10,000 concurrent connections from one server. Two traps catch people. Hardcoded SendGrid IPs break when they change without notice, and a base64-encoded key with a stray line break fails authentication.

What the Event Webhook and activity search tell you

The SendGrid event webhook posts batches of events (processed, delivered, deferred, bounce, open, click, spam report, unsubscribe) to a URL you control, so your app can suppress dead addresses or mark an invoice as opened. Trial accounts get one endpoint, Essentials two and Pro five, which matters if staging, production and an analytics tool all want the feed. Dashboard activity search keeps only 3 days of history on Essentials and 7 on Pro, with longer retention sold as an add-on. Keep your own copy of events if support needs older records.

Why SendGrid emails land in spam and the fixes that work

Most spam-folder complaints trace back to three causes. First, skipped sender authentication. SendGrid's domain authentication asks you to add CNAME records that publish DKIM and SPF for your domain, and without them Gmail sees mail signed by SendGrid on behalf of an unrelated domain. Add a DMARC record as well, since Google and Yahoo have required SPF, DKIM, DMARC and one-click unsubscribe from bulk senders since early 2024.

Second, the shared IP pool. Trial and Essentials accounts send from IPs shared with other customers, so a neighbour's bad campaign can dent your email deliverability for a few days. Third, list quality. Bought lists get you throttled fast. Pro includes 2,500 email validations a month to clean lists before an import.

What a SendGrid dedicated IP costs, in price and in warm-up time

Twilio's docs say one dedicated IP comes with the Pro Email API and the Advanced Marketing Campaigns plans. Trial and Essentials accounts send from shared pools, and the docs describe buying extra IPs only on those IP-included plans. Each extra address carries a monthly fee that Twilio doesn't publish, so ask sales for a quote. Mailgun charges $59 for each extra IP and Amazon SES $24.95 for a standard one.

A new IP has no reputation, so it has to be warmed by sending gradually rising volume over several weeks. SendGrid offers automated warm-up, but only if you already own at least one other warm IP to absorb overflow. The console lets you add one IP a month, and support must approve more. Twilio's guidance is to run at least two dedicated IPs once volume reaches 250,000 messages a month, and about one IP per three to four million messages a day beyond that. At low volume a dedicated IP rarely helps.

SendGrid vs Mailgun on a 50,000-email month

Mailgun's pricing page still offers a permanent free plan at 100 emails a day, which is the clearest difference for hobby projects. At 50,000 emails a month, Mailgun Foundation costs $35 against $19.95 for SendGrid Essentials 50K, so SendGrid is cheaper for plain transactional sending at that volume. At 100,000 the two are almost level: SendGrid Pro 100K at $89.95 and Mailgun Scale at $90, both with a dedicated IP. Mailgun Basic is $15 for 10,000 emails.

SendGrid's edge is a full marketing tool under the same login. Amazon SES is the cost floor: new accounts default to an Essentials rate of $0.16 per 1,000 emails, and the older $0.10 a la carte rate can still be chosen, so 50,000 messages cost $5 to $8. The catch is setup. SES starts in a sandbox and has no template designer, so you pay in developer time.

Marketing Campaigns is a separate bill

SendGrid marketing campaigns, the newsletter and automation side, is priced on contacts rather than sends and billed apart from the Email API. Basic starts at $15 a month for 5,000 contacts and 15,000 emails, with segmentation, A/B testing and 5 signup forms. Advanced starts at $60 for 10,000 contacts and 50,000 emails and adds automation journeys, a dedicated IP, 15 signup forms and guaranteed response times. The trial allows 100 contacts and 100 emails a day.

How the SendGrid email API pricing and free plan changes add up for a small team

Take a two-founder startup sending 20,000 transactional emails a month plus a monthly newsletter to 4,500 contacts. Essentials 50K ($19.95) plus Marketing Campaigns Basic 5K ($15) totals about $35 a month before tax. Grow to 150,000 transactional emails and the bill moves up to a higher volume tier, priced in Twilio's selector, unless you accept overage charges, which the pricing page mentions without listing a rate. That cliff is why growing teams compare Mailgun, Amazon SES, Postmark, Brevo and Resend.

Support is the other trade-off. Expert services and personalised support are paid extras on every tier, so small accounts lean on docs and tickets.

Is Twilio SendGrid safe, and which teams should sign up

SendGrid has belonged to Twilio since 2019. Its current privacy notice explains that SendGrid places web beacons in emails to record opens and clicks, while customer email content is handled as a processor under Twilio's Data Protection Addendum. Pro and Premier accounts can use EU data residency, announced by Twilio in 2025, through an EU regional subuser with an EU dedicated IP. Service health is public on status.twilio.com.

Sign up if you have a developer, send thousands of emails a month and want transactional and marketing mail from one vendor. Skip it if you need a free tier forever, if raw cost per email decides everything (SES wins), or if nobody on the team can manage DNS records.

SendGrid FAQ

What is SendGrid used for?

SendGrid sends transactional email such as password resets, OTP fallbacks, receipts and alerts through an API or SMTP, and marketing email through its Marketing Campaigns product. Developers also use Inbound Parse to receive emails as HTTP posts and the Event Webhook to track deliveries, opens, clicks and bounces.

Is SendGrid still free?

Not permanently. New accounts have received a 60-day free trial since March 2025, and Twilio retired the free Email API and Marketing Campaigns plans for existing users from 27 May 2025. After the trial you need a paid plan, starting with Essentials at $19.95 a month, to keep sending.

How many emails can I send on SendGrid free?

The free trial allows 100 emails per day for 60 days, so about 6,000 in total, with no credit card required. The Marketing Campaigns trial adds a limit of 100 contacts. Once the 60 days end, sending stops until you upgrade.

How do I send email using the SendGrid API in Node.js?

Install the official package with npm install @sendgrid/mail, set your API key with setApiKey, and call send with to, from, subject and text or html fields. The library posts to the v3 Mail Send endpoint with your key as a Bearer token. Verify a sender or authenticate your domain first, or the request is rejected.

Is SendGrid safe and reputable?

Yes. SendGrid has been part of Twilio, a publicly listed company, since 2019, and its service status, privacy notice and Data Protection Addendum are public. Pro plans add SSO, and Pro and Premier can keep data in the EU through regional subusers.

How does SendGrid compare with Amazon SES on cost?

Amazon SES charges $0.16 per 1,000 emails on its default Essentials plan or $0.10 on the a la carte option, so 50,000 emails cost $5 to $8, while SendGrid Essentials 50K costs $19.95. SES dedicated IPs are $24.95 a month versus a monthly add-on fee at SendGrid. SES needs more setup work, starts in a sandbox and has no visual template editor.

Does SendGrid work in India?

Yes. Indian businesses can sign up, use the API and SMTP relay, and send to any inbox. Billing is in US dollars only, with no INR price list, so you need a card that allows recurring international charges.

What are the best SendGrid alternatives?

Mailgun keeps a free plan of 100 emails a day and prices Foundation at $35 for 50,000 emails. Amazon SES is the cheapest at volume, and Postmark, Brevo and Resend are other common choices depending on whether you need transactional focus, marketing tools or a simple developer API.

Why are my SendGrid emails going to spam?

The usual causes are missing domain authentication (DKIM and SPF via CNAME records), no DMARC record, a damaged shared IP pool on lower plans, or sending to stale lists. Authenticate your domain, add DMARC and one-click unsubscribe, and clean lists before importing them.

Who should use SendGrid?

SendGrid suits product teams with a developer who send thousands of emails a month and want transactional and marketing email from one vendor. It is less suitable for hobby projects that need a permanent free tier or for high-volume senders who care only about the lowest cost per email.
