Our verdict
Proton VPN has the most usable free plan among major VPNs: no data cap, no ads and an audited no-logs policy, limited to one device and 10 countries. VPN Plus is worth paying for if you need country choice, streaming, P2P or several devices, ideally on a longer term since $9.99 monthly is steep. Indian buyers should note there is no UPI on the website and Indian IPs come from Singapore.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Proton VPN?
Ten countries, one device and no data cap: that is the deal Proton gives anyone who installs its VPN without paying, and it is the reason this Proton VPN free vs paid review exists. Most rival VPNs either have no free tier at all or squeeze free users with a monthly data allowance. Proton, the Geneva company behind Proton Mail, does neither. The catch sits elsewhere, in server choice, speed priority and features, and the paid upgrade costs more per month than many readers expect once introductory offers end.
This page is written for Indian freelancers, small agencies and developers who use public Wi-Fi, work with overseas clients or simply want their ISP out of their browsing history. It is also useful for anyone comparing Proton with NordVPN or ExpressVPN before committing to a long plan. Everything below comes from Proton's pricing page, support articles and app store listings as they read in October 2026.
Proton VPN free plan limits: one device, ten countries, no data cap
The pricing page lists the Free plan at $0 with three hard limits: one connected device at a time, "medium" speed and servers in 10 countries that are picked for you. Proton's support article names those countries as the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada and the United States. India is not on the list.
You cannot pick a country on the free tier. The app connects you to the fastest free server for your location, and a "Change server" button hands you a random new one. After the first switch there is a 45-second cooldown, then every later switch makes you wait 10 minutes. That rules out hopping between regions to test a website or an ad campaign.
What you do get is real. There are no ads, no bandwidth cap, the same no-logs policy paid users get, a kill switch and DNS and IPv6 leak protection. Proton's plans article reserves NetShield, streaming, P2P, Secure Core, split tunnelling and the browser extension for paying customers, so torrenting and unblocking foreign streaming catalogues are off the table.
What VPN Plus adds once you start paying
VPN Plus is the plan most single users will buy. It raises the device limit to 10, opens the full network (Proton advertises 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries), adds P2P servers and port forwarding for torrent clients, adds streaming support, Secure Core routing and NetShield, and brings live chat support, which the features page ties to a paid plan.
Speed is the other difference. Free servers are labelled medium speed, while paid plans get what Proton calls its highest VPN speed, with servers rated up to 10 Gbps. There is also VPN Accelerator, a Proton technology it claims can speed up connections to distant servers by up to 400%. Proton publishes no benchmark you can reproduce, so treat that figure as a marketing ceiling rather than a promise.
Proton Unlimited is the bundle option. It includes everything in VPN Plus plus the paid tiers of Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, Pass and Wallet, with 500 GB of storage shared across Mail and Drive, and Proton Docs on top. If you already pay for a password manager and cloud storage elsewhere, the Proton Unlimited bundle can replace two or three subscriptions at once.
| Plan | Regular price | Renewal on longer terms | VPN devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not applicable | 1 |
| VPN Plus | $9.99 per month | $83.88 every 12 months | 10 |
| Proton Unlimited | $12.99 per month | $119.88 every 12 months | 10 |
Longer terms carry a discount for the first billing period, but that offer changes often, so the table sticks to the regular monthly rate (shown struck through on the pricing page) and the renewal amounts Proton prints under each plan. A 30-day money-back guarantee covers every subscription.
Proton VPN price in India: dollars on the website, rupees in the App Store
Proton's website bills in USD, EUR or CHF. There is no rupee option, so an Indian card is charged in dollars, with whatever forex markup your bank adds. Accepted methods on the website are Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Proton credits, and those credits can be topped up with Bitcoin, cash or bank transfer. UPI is not mentioned anywhere on the pricing page.
If you subscribe inside the iPhone app instead, rupee prices are shown at checkout on the Indian App Store, along with the billing period, so read the purchase sheet before you confirm. For someone without an international card, paying through Apple or Google is the simplest route, although refunds then go through the store rather than Proton.
Secure Core, NetShield and the other Proton VPN privacy tools
Secure Core is Proton's multi-hop design. Your traffic enters a hardened server in Switzerland, Iceland or Sweden, countries Proton chose for their privacy laws, and only then exits in the country you selected. The idea is that someone watching a US exit server cannot trace the connection straight back to your real IP address. It is included on all paid plans, and like any double hop it adds latency, which matters for calls more than for browsing.
The rest of the toolkit is practical rather than flashy:
- Protocols: the WireGuard protocol for everyday speed, OpenVPN for compatibility, and the Stealth protocol, a WireGuard variant wrapped in TLS that is harder for firewalls to spot.
- NetShield ad blocker: a DNS filter for ads, trackers and malware domains, paid plans only.
- Kill switch and Always-on VPN: traffic stops if the tunnel drops, and the app reconnects on its own.
- Split tunnelling: on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV and the browser extension, for paid plans.
- Port forwarding: on Windows, Linux and (in early access) macOS, only while you are connected to one of the P2P servers.
- Tor over VPN: opens .onion sites without installing the Tor Browser.
Apps exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and iPadOS, Android TV, Apple TV and Chromebook, plus Chrome and Firefox extensions that need a paid plan. The app source code is public on GitHub, which is rarer among big VPN brands than it should be.
Audits, Swiss law and the India server question
Proton's claim is simple: it does not log your traffic, the sites you visit or VPN session data. The difference from a bare promise is that its no logs policy has been audited by Securitum, a European security firm, every year since 2022. The fifth consecutive audit was published in June 2026; reviewers spent several days on site checking production servers, configuration files and staff procedures and found no logging of user activity or connection metadata.
The data needed to run your account is still kept, and the privacy policy says it is always stored encrypted on servers in Switzerland, Germany or Norway. Proton AG is a Swiss company whose primary shareholder is the non-profit Proton Foundation.
That stance is why Proton pulled its physical servers out of India in 2022. CERT-In's April 2022 directions asked VPN providers operating in the country to record names, addresses, contact numbers, IP addresses and usage purpose and keep them for five years. Proton refused and moved to "Smart Routing": servers that give you an Indian IP address but physically sit in Singapore. You can still use Proton from inside India and connect to any server abroad; the India-IP servers are simply virtual and only available on paid plans, since India is not among the free countries.
Proton VPN vs NordVPN on price, network and extras
NordVPN is the obvious alternative. Its Basic plan costs $14.99 on monthly billing and renews at $139.08 a year on longer terms, both higher than VPN Plus. Nord also covers 10 devices, lists about 7,100 servers in 150 countries and has had six Deloitte no-logs assessments. Where Nord pulls ahead is extras such as Meshnet and its Threat Protection Pro filter on desktop, plus a broader set of add-on tiers. Where Proton wins is the free plan (Nord has none), open-source apps and the Secure Core design.
ExpressVPN sits in between on renewals, with its Basic tier renewing at $99.95 a year, and it also routes Indian IP addresses through Singapore and UK servers. It offers no free tier either. If you need a VPN only occasionally, Proton is the one of the three you can keep installed without paying anything.
When Proton is slow or will not connect
Most complaints come from free users at peak hours. Free servers are shared by a large crowd and rated medium speed, so evenings on a Singapore or Japan server can feel sluggish from India. A few fixes help:
- Use the nearest free country. From India that is usually Singapore or Japan.
- If your office or hostel Wi-Fi blocks VPNs, try the Stealth protocol in settings if your app version offers it.
- On paid plans, avoid Secure Core when you need low latency, and try a closer exit.
- Remember the server-change cooldown on the free plan before assuming the app is broken.
Proton runs a public status page at status.proton.me listing free, regular and Secure Core server health, which is the first place to check if every server fails at once.
Setting up Proton VPN on an Android phone
Install the app from Google Play (Proton AG is the developer; the listing shows 100M+ downloads). The Play listing says the free version works without creating an account, though signing in with a Proton account lets you carry a paid plan across devices. Tap Quick Connect for the fastest server, allow the Android VPN permission, and you are protected. Then open settings to turn on Always-on VPN from the system menu, choose a protocol, and, if you pay, enable NetShield and pick P2P servers for torrent apps.
Who should upgrade, going by this Proton VPN free vs paid review
Stay free if you want a trustworthy VPN for café Wi-Fi, travel and hiding browsing from your ISP on one device. Pay for VPN Plus if you need a specific country (including an Indian IP while abroad), streaming, torrenting with port forwarding, or more than one device. Choose Proton Unlimited if Mail, Pass and Drive would replace tools you already pay for. The real downsides are dollar billing with no UPI on the website, a monthly price that is high unless you commit long term, and free-tier speeds that dip at busy times.

Proton VPN FAQ
What is Proton VPN?
Proton VPN is a virtual private network run by Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. It encrypts your connection and hides your IP address, offers a free plan and paid plans, and has apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, TV devices and Chrome and Firefox.
Is Proton VPN free?
Yes. The Free plan costs nothing, shows no ads and does not expire. It is limited to one device, servers in 10 countries chosen for you, and medium speed. Paid features such as P2P, streaming, Secure Core and NetShield need VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited.
Is the Proton VPN free plan really unlimited data?
Yes. Proton's pricing page and free-VPN page both say there is no data limit on the free plan. The limits are on device count, country choice and speed priority rather than on how many gigabytes you use.
How do I use Proton VPN on Android?
Install Proton VPN from Google Play, open it and tap Quick Connect, then accept Android's VPN permission prompt. The Play listing says the free version can be used without an account. In settings you can pick a protocol such as WireGuard or Stealth and, on paid plans, turn on NetShield.
Is Proton VPN safe and no logs?
Proton says it does not log traffic, browsing or VPN session data, and Securitum has audited that policy every year from 2022 to 2026. Account data is still kept, and the privacy policy says it is always stored encrypted. The apps are also open source on GitHub.
How does Proton VPN compare with NordVPN and ExpressVPN?
Proton is the only one of the three with a free plan, and its VPN Plus costs $9.99 monthly against NordVPN Basic at $14.99. NordVPN has more add-on tools such as Meshnet, and ExpressVPN renews its Basic tier at $99.95 a year. All three cover 10 or more devices and publish independent no-logs audits.
Does Proton VPN work in India?
Yes. Proton removed its physical Indian servers in 2022 rather than follow CERT-In's five-year logging rule, but users in India can connect to any server abroad. Paid plans also offer Smart Routing servers that give an Indian IP address while physically sitting in Singapore.
What are the best Proton VPN alternatives?
NordVPN suits people who want extra tools such as Meshnet and desktop threat protection, and ExpressVPN suits those who want a simple app with Indian IPs via Singapore and the UK. Neither has a free plan, so for a no-cost option Proton's own Free tier is hard to replace.
Why is Proton VPN slow or not connecting?
Free servers are shared and rated medium speed, so they can slow down at busy hours. Try the nearest free country, try the Stealth protocol on networks that block VPNs if your app shows it, and wait out the server-change cooldown. If every server fails, check status.proton.me.
Who is Proton VPN best for?
It suits privacy-minded users who want a no-cost VPN for one device, and paying users who value audited no-logs claims, Secure Core and open-source apps. It is less convenient for Indian buyers who want UPI or rupee billing on the website, since rupee prices only appear at App Store checkout.
