What is NordVPN?

NordVPN is a paid VPN from Nord Security, a company based in Vilnius, Lithuania, and the service has been running since 2012. If you came here for the NordVPN price in India for 2 year plan, the short version is this: at the time of checking, the official pricing page showed the 2-year Basic plan at $3.49 a month, billed as $94.23 for the first 27 months, and that is a promotional price, not the long-term rate. Below we explain the tiers, the renewal jump, the India server situation after CERT-In's 2022 rules, and how it compares with ExpressVPN.

What NordVPN is and how it works

A VPN app sends your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to one of the provider's servers, so websites see the server's IP address instead of yours, and your ISP or café Wi-Fi sees only scrambled data. NordVPN's servers page lists 7,102 servers in 150 countries. You install the app, sign in with a Nord Account and tap connect. Ten devices can be connected at the same time on any plan.

It suits freelancers on public Wi-Fi, remote teams who need a stable foreign IP, travellers, and anyone who wants extra privacy from their broadband provider. It is less suited to someone who only needs a VPN once a month, because the good prices only apply to long commitments.

Key features in practice

• NordLynx protocol: NordVPN's default protocol, built on WireGuard. It is the reason most people get usable speeds on long-distance routes.
• Kill switch: cuts your internet if the VPN tunnel drops, so your real IP does not leak in the gap.
• Specialty servers: Double VPN (traffic passes through two servers), Onion Over VPN (routes into the Tor network without the Tor Browser), obfuscated servers (hide the fact that you are using a VPN on strict networks) and P2P servers.
• Split tunnelling: pick which apps skip the VPN, handy for banking apps that dislike foreign IPs.
• Dedicated IP: a fixed address only you use, sold as a checkout add-on. Useful for logging into client servers or admin panels that use IP allowlists.
• Threat Protection Pro: NordVPN describes it as filtering at the URL and script level to block malware, phishing, trackers and ads, and says it works on Windows and macOS even with the VPN switched off. On the current pricing page, the full anti-malware and ad blocking sits in Complete and is marked desktop only, while Basic gets scam and phishing protection.

Apps exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV and Apple TV, with browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Router setup is documented too.

NordVPN plans and pricing India

Three tiers appear on the pricing page today: Basic, Complete and Prime. The older Plus tier no longer shows, so ignore blog posts that still quote it. We could only load the USD version of the page; NordVPN says payment options and currency depend on your country, so Indian checkout may show different figures. The page also notes that tax may apply. All prices below are promotional prices at time of checking.

Basic is the VPN itself, scam and phishing protection, and Dark Web Monitor for up to five email addresses. Complete adds the desktop antivirus and ad blocker, a cross-platform password manager (NordPass), 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage (NordLocker), call protection and wider dark web monitoring. Complete also lists bank transaction monitoring, but only for US accounts. Prime layers on identity theft insurance, cyber extortion cover, credit freeze help, one-bureau credit monitoring and a VantageScore 3.0 score supplied by TransUnion. All of that is tied to the US credit system, so Indian buyers get little from it. For most readers here, Basic or Complete is the sensible pick.

NordVPN price in India for 2 year plan: the renewal catch

The 27-month Basic term costs $94.23 up front. After that, the plan renews at $139.08 a year according to the same page, which is more than three times the effective yearly rate of about $42 you paid in the first term. Complete renews at $219.48 and Prime at $296.28. Turn off auto-renewal in your Nord Account if you want to shop around when the term ends.

Payment methods listed on the pricing page include Visa, Mastercard, Amex and other cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, crypto (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and others), prepaid retail cards, and in-app purchase through Google Play, the App Store or Amazon. UPI is not listed on the site. If you buy inside the Android app, Google Play handles billing with the methods your Play account supports, but refunds then go through Google, not Nord.

Free plan, free trial and the money-back guarantee

There is no free NordVPN plan. NordVPN's own pricing explainer mentions a 7-day trial for first-time customers, but only in a short list of countries (the US, UK, Canada, Australia and a handful of European countries), and India is not on it. It also mentions a separate three-day Android trial that Google Play runs under its own terms.

Every tier carries a 30-day money-back guarantee. The wording on the pricing page is simple: tell NordVPN within 30 days of buying and get a full refund. Cancelling alone does not trigger a refund; you have to ask support for it. App-store purchases must be refunded through that store.

NordVPN free trial alternative

For Indian users, the realistic way to try NordVPN for free is to buy the shortest plan you are comfortable with, test it hard for three weeks, and claim the refund before day 30 if it does not suit you. Test what you actually need: streaming apps, speeds to the US and Singapore, and your bank app with split tunnelling.

If you want a genuinely free tool instead, Meshnet (below) works without a paid plan, though no free VPN tier comes with NordVPN itself.

NordVPN Meshnet how to use

Meshnet links your devices into a private network over the internet, so a laptop in Pune can reach files or a game server on a PC in Delhi as if both were on the same home LAN. NordVPN announced in August 2025 that Meshnet would close on 1 December 2025, then reversed that on 29 September 2025 after user pushback and said it would open-source the code. The Meshnet page now describes it as free and open source.

• Install the NordVPN app on each device (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS) and sign in.
• Switch Meshnet on in the app.
• Your own devices on the same account appear automatically; invite someone else's device using its Meshnet name.
• Set permissions per device, such as file sharing or routing traffic through another device.

Limits per network: 10 of your own devices, 50 external devices, 60 in total.

India servers, CERT-In and privacy

In April 2022 CERT-In issued directions requiring VPN providers operating in India to collect and store customer data, which NordVPN listed as names, addresses, email IDs, phone numbers, the reason for using a VPN, IP addresses and usage dates, for five years or more. NordVPN said on 20 June 2022 that it would shut down its servers in India on 26 June 2022 rather than keep such records. Indian customers can still buy and use the service from India.

The servers page still lists India (Mumbai) as a location, though it does not say whether that entry is physical or virtual. NordVPN's virtual servers post says its first India virtual location went live in January 2024 on a physical server in Singapore, yet India no longer appears in the current table of virtual locations in that same post. In practice, expect an Indian IP routed from hardware outside India, with a little more latency than a truly local server, and confirm the location in the app before you rely on it.

On logging, Deloitte Lithuania has run independent no-logs assurance engagements for NordVPN in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, late 2024 (18 November to 20 December) and late 2025 (10 November to 12 December, report dated 12 December 2025). The latest one covered standard, Double VPN, obfuscated and Onion Over VPN servers under the ISAE 3000 standard. Each audit is a point-in-time check, but six rounds is a strong record.

Streaming and torrenting

P2P traffic is allowed on dedicated P2P servers, which were part of the 2024 audit scope. For streaming, NordVPN mentions a SmartPlay feature for watching shows abroad, but its features page does not name specific services, so treat Netflix unblocking as something to test inside the refund window rather than a promise.

NordVPN vs ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is the closest premium rival. Its pricing page at the time of checking showed only 2-year plans with four bonus months (28 months).

On these numbers ExpressVPN is cheaper to start and much cheaper to renew at the entry tier. NordVPN gives you more for the money in features: Meshnet, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and, on Complete, a password manager plus 1 TB of storage. On speed, neither company publishes a figure you can compare fairly, and results depend heavily on your ISP and the route. Since NordVPN pulled its physical India servers in 2022, run a speed test against your usual destinations with both during their refund windows.

Limitations to know before paying

• Renewal prices are much higher than first-term prices.
• Physical India servers were removed in 2022, and the Indian IP is served from outside the country.
• No free plan, and the 7-day trial is not offered in India.
• Several protection features in Complete are desktop only.

If NordVPN is not connecting

Most connection failures come down to the network or the protocol. Try another server or country first. Switch between NordLynx and OpenVPN in settings. On office, college or hotel Wi-Fi that blocks VPNs, use obfuscated servers. Close other VPN or antivirus tools that add their own network filters, then restart the app or reinstall it. If the kill switch is on and the tunnel fails, it will block all traffic until you reconnect, which can look like a dead internet connection.

How to get started

Pick Basic if you only need the VPN, or Complete if you will actually use NordPass and NordLocker. Choose the 1-year term if you dislike long lock-ins; the 2-year term only makes sense if you are sure. Pay by card, PayPal or Google Pay on the website, install the apps on your devices, turn on the kill switch and auto-connect on untrusted Wi-Fi, and note your purchase date so the 30-day refund window does not slip by.
