Our verdict
Paytm Payment Gateway is a sensible pick for Indian SMEs that want a flat 1.99% rate, no setup or maintenance fees and one provider for online checkout plus Soundbox or card machines. PPSL's RBI authorisation in late 2025 settles the main regulatory doubt. Paytm's pages still call UPI free, but since 15 October 2026 merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000 can carry up to 0.4% MDR, so get UPI, method-wise and instant payout rates in writing.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Paytm Payment Gateway?
Paytm Payment Gateway is the online checkout service run by Paytm Payments Services Ltd (PPSL), the payments subsidiary of One 97 Communications. This review looks at Paytm payment gateway charges and settlement time, the documents you need for KYC, how integration works for websites and apps, and how it compares with Razorpay and Cashfree.
Who Paytm's checkout is built for
The gateway lets a business accept UPI, cards, net banking, EMI and Paytm Postpaid on a website or app, then pays the money into a current account. Paytm's product page claims 100+ payment sources and net banking from 50+ banks. It sits next to Paytm's in-store products (the Paytm Soundbox, the Paytm EDC card machine and the All-in-One UPI QR), so a shop that sells both online and offline can keep everything with one provider.
It fits Indian startups, D2C brands, schools, clinics and SMEs that want a known brand at checkout. It suits businesses with a registered entity and a current account. It is less suited to freelancers without a business proof, since the document list leans heavily on business registration.
Paytm payment gateway MDR rates
The online pricing page shows two plans. The Standard plan, aimed at startups and SMEs, lists a 1.99% platform fee on all transactions, plus 18% GST. The Enterprise plan is custom priced after a call with Paytm's sales team. Setup fee is zero, there is no annual maintenance charge (AMC), and the FAQ says there are no hidden software upgrade charges.
The online page does not split rates by method, and the UPI line sits on a different page. Paytm's business.paytm.com pricing page still advertises "lifetime free charges on UPI & RuPay cards", and its online payments FAQ says Paytm does not charge for UPI transactions. Read the detail, though: the card machine table on that page shows 0% only for UPI and RuPay debit, while RuPay credit cards carry a fee. That wording dates from the old law, which barred MDR on all UPI and RuPay debit payments. The 2026 change narrowed the free part (see below), and Paytm's public pages do not yet say how it bills larger UPI payments. Credit cards, other debit cards, net banking and wallets fall under the 1.99% figure. Ask your account manager for UPI rates above and below ₹2,000 in writing, because the pricing terms say the final rate is whatever Paytm communicates after your account is created, and that Paytm can change prices for regulatory reasons.
Here is what changed. The Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Act 2026 rewrote Section 10A of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, and a gazette notice of 14 September 2026 (S.O. 5067(E)) now protects only two modes from any charge: RuPay debit cards and UPI payments up to ₹2,000. From 15 October 2026, the finance ministry's FAQ allows up to 0.4% MDR on merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000, with a ₹300 ceiling once a payment reaches ₹75,000. Transfers between people are exempt. So is a small shop collecting up to ₹1 lakh a month through a UPI QR. Railways, fuel and a few other sectors pay a flat ₹5, capital-market payments pay 0.02% (also capped at ₹300), and AutoPay has no prescribed rate. You absorb the fee as the merchant, since the FAQ forbids adding it to the customer's bill.
International cards are switched on only after verification, and the online page lists no rate for them. For reference, Paytm's card machine (EDC) MDR table shows international cards at 3.50%, Amex at 2.75% to 3.99% depending on category, and Diners, JCB and UnionPay at 2.99%. Those are in-store rates, not online ones, so treat them only as a guide.
| Item | Paytm (Standard) | Razorpay (Standard) | Cashfree (Standard) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headline fee | 1.99% + 18% GST | 2% + GST | 1.95% + taxes |
| UPI and RuPay debit | Page says free; by law only UPI to ₹2,000 and RuPay debit are | Page says zero MDR (platform fee terms apply) | As per applicable law |
| Merchant UPI above ₹2,000 (from 15 Oct 2026) | Up to 0.4%, max ₹300; billing not published | Up to 0.4%, max ₹300; check agreement | Up to 0.4%, max ₹300; check agreement |

Paytm payment gateway charges and settlement time
Paytm's settlements page lists four options: batch settlement on a T+n cycle, same-day settlement into a virtual account that can be swept several times a day, on-demand transfers available 24x7, and real-time settlement. The settlement processing doc describes the usual settlement cycle as T+1: money collected until 12 AM is paid out the next day. The product page also labels T+1 as Paytm's default.
Faster payouts are not free in every case. The docs say early settlement carries "minimum fees as per the business type", but no figure is published. Yet the FAQ on the settlements page states that real-time settlement attracts no additional charge. Those two lines do not fully agree, so get the instant payout fee in your agreement before you switch it on. Paytm also deducts its commission plus 18% GST on that commission (and any refunds or chargebacks) from each settlement, so the amount that reaches your bank is net of fees.
Paytm Payments Bank: what changed for merchants
In early 2024 the RBI barred Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) from accepting deposits, credits or top-ups after 15 March 2024. Its press release of 16 February 2024 also said the nodal accounts of One 97 and PPSL at PPBL had to be terminated by 29 February 2024. Paytm shifted its nodal account to Axis Bank the same month. For a gateway merchant, the practical point is simple: your settlement account must be with another bank.
The bigger regulatory question has since been answered. PPSL received in-principle approval in August 2025, then the RBI granted it a certificate of authorisation as an online payment aggregator on 26 November 2025, according to One 97's stock exchange disclosure. A second disclosure dated 17 December 2025 reported RBI authorisation for offline and cross-border aggregation as well. As of October 2026, PPSL holds authorisation for online, offline and cross-border payment aggregation, which removes the onboarding freeze that hung over the business for nearly three years.
Paytm business account KYC documents
Paytm's document requirements page lists different sets by business type. A proprietorship needs a business proof (GST certificate, Udyam, shop establishment certificate, municipal licence or a recent utility bill), the proprietor's individual PAN, an address proof such as Aadhaar or passport, a cancelled cheque or bank statement for a current account (savings accounts are not accepted), and either a GST certificate or a signed declaration of GST non-enrolment.
- Partnerships and LLPs: partnership or LLP deed, firm PAN, current account proof, GST or non-enrolment declaration, and a declaration signed by two partners.
- Private and public limited companies: certificate of incorporation matching MCA records, company PAN, signatory PAN and KYC, DIN, and a line-of-business declaration.
- Trusts, societies and HUFs: the trust deed, bye-laws or HUF deed, plus signatory KYC.
Files must be under 2 MB in JPG, PNG or PDF, and handwritten documents are rejected. Your website also needs to pass Paytm's web compliance review before live payments are switched on.
Paytm payment gateway integration
Developers sign up on the dashboard and get a staging Merchant ID (MID) and Merchant Key straight away. The production MID arrives only after activation. The developer docs offer several routes:
- Paytm All in One SDK for Android and iOS apps, listed as the recommended route.
- JS Checkout, a two-step web integration with a hosted payment UI.
- Custom Checkout and JS Elements for teams that want their own payment page.
- E-commerce plugins for platforms including Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento.
- Payment links, subscription payments and Server SDKs for server-to-server calls.
Every API request is signed with a checksum created from your Merchant Key and the request body. Paytm publishes checksum libraries on GitHub for PHP, Java, Node, Python, ASP.NET, Go, Ruby and Perl, and PHP users can pull the utility from Packagist through Composer. The staging host is securestage.paytmpayments.com and live traffic goes to secure.paytmpayments.com. Going live means swapping the MID and key, changing the website name from WEBSTAGING to DEFAULT, and pointing the Initiate Transaction and Transaction Status APIs at production.
Paytm payment gateway vs Razorpay
On price, the three are close. Paytm's Standard fee is 1.99%, Razorpay's pricing page shows 2% plus GST, and Cashfree's standard rate is 1.95% plus taxes. None of the three charges a setup fee, so the per-transaction rate is what you compare. Cashfree is the only one of the three that prints an instant settlement fee (0.30% plus GST) and an international card rate (2.99%) on its public page.
Razorpay quotes T+1 settlement with an instant option. Its FAQ still promises zero MDR on bank-to-bank UPI and RuPay debit, with a platform fee that may apply. Under the October 2026 framework, that holds by law only for RuPay debit and UPI payments up to ₹2,000, so ask how Razorpay bills larger UPI payments too. Paytm's edge is the offline side: the Paytm for Business app, Soundbox, card machines and UPI QR all sit in the same group, which suits a retailer that also sells online. PhonePe's gateway is another option, with a 1.99% Standard rate and zero setup and AMC on its pricing page.
Safety, holds and limitations
Paytm's product page says the gateway is PCI-DSS compliant and uses encryption, tokenisation and fraud prevention systems. The regulatory risk that worried many merchants in 2024 related to the Payments Bank, not to PPSL, and PPSL now holds RBI authorisation.
The weak points are transparency and support friction. Rates by payment method, international pricing and instant payout fees are not published for online merchants, and the terms let Paytm change prices without prior notice. Settlements can be put on hold "due to business or other reasons", according to the docs, and failed payouts usually trace back to a closed or frozen account, a wrong IFSC or a name mismatch. If your account is on hold, check pending KYC items, web compliance and your bank details on the dashboard first, then raise a ticket with the merchant helpdesk. Paytm's own marketing pages also quote inconsistent capacity numbers (2,500 in the FAQ, 10,000+ transactions per second elsewhere), which is a small sign of how loosely its claims are written.
Taking a Paytm merchant account live
- Sign up on the Paytm Payments dashboard with your business mobile number and email.
- Upload KYC documents for your entity type and add a current account for payouts.
- Make sure your website shows pricing, refund, privacy, terms and contact pages for the compliance review.
- Build and test on staging using the test MID and key, then request activation.
- Once approved, swap to production credentials, confirm your settlement cycle and ask for written rates before you go live.
For most Indian SMEs, Paytm is a fair choice at 1.99% with no setup fee and no AMC. Small UPI payments stay free; bigger ones may not, so pin that down in the agreement. If you mainly want clear published pricing and polished developer tooling, compare the Razorpay and Cashfree fee pages before you commit.

Paytm Payment Gateway FAQ
What are Paytm payment gateway charges?
Paytm's online pricing page lists a Standard plan at a 1.99% platform fee plus 18% GST, with zero setup fee and no annual maintenance charge, and its business pricing page still says UPI and RuPay debit carry no charge. By law, RuPay debit and UPI payments up to ₹2,000 remain free. From 15 October 2026, though, merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000 can carry up to 0.4% MDR (capped at ₹300), with P2P and small merchants exempt, so check how Paytm bills this in your agreement. Large businesses can ask for custom Enterprise pricing.
How do I get Paytm payment gateway for my website?
Sign up on the Paytm Payments dashboard, upload KYC documents for your business type and add a current account. Integrate using JS Checkout, a plugin such as WooCommerce or Shopify, or the APIs, testing first with the staging MID and key. After activation and web compliance review you receive production credentials.
How long does Paytm settlement take?
Paytm's docs describe T+1 as the usual cycle, with money collected until 12 AM paid out the next day. Same-day, on-demand and real-time settlement options are also offered. Early settlement may carry a fee that depends on your business type.
How do I integrate Paytm payment gateway in PHP?
Install Paytm's PHP checksum library (available through Composer), call the Initiate Transaction API from your server with a checksum built from your Merchant Key, and pass the returned token to JS Checkout. Verify the final status with the Transaction Status API before confirming the order. Test on securestage.paytmpayments.com before moving to production.
Is Paytm payment gateway safe?
Paytm says the gateway is PCI-DSS compliant and uses encryption, tokenisation and fraud checks. Paytm Payments Services Ltd received RBI authorisation as an online payment aggregator on 26 November 2025, followed by offline and cross-border approval in December 2025. The 2024 RBI action was against Paytm Payments Bank, a separate entity.
Paytm vs Razorpay vs Cashfree: which is cheaper?
Their standard rates are close: Paytm 1.99% plus GST, Razorpay 2% plus GST and Cashfree 1.95% plus taxes, all with zero setup fees. Cashfree publishes an instant settlement fee of 0.30% and an international card rate of 2.99%, while Paytm does not publish those online. For most merchants the gap between 1.95% and 2% matters less than settlement speed and support, so compare those too.
How does Paytm compare with PhonePe payment gateway?
Both list a 1.99% Standard rate with zero setup and annual maintenance fees. Paytm offers a wider set of related products, including Soundbox, card machines and subscriptions, under one group.
What documents are required for Paytm payment gateway?
A proprietor needs a business proof such as a GST, Udyam or shop establishment certificate, an individual PAN, an address proof like Aadhaar, current account proof and a GST certificate or non-enrolment declaration. Companies, LLPs and trusts need their incorporation or registration documents plus signatory KYC. Savings accounts and handwritten documents are not accepted.
What are the best Paytm payment gateway alternatives?
Razorpay and Cashfree are the closest alternatives in India, with similar standard rates and strong developer documentation. PhonePe's gateway is another option with a 1.99% Standard rate and no setup fee. Stripe suits businesses selling mainly to international customers.
Why is my Paytm payment gateway account on hold?
Paytm's docs say settlements can be held for business or other reasons, and common causes include pending KYC, failed web compliance checks or bank details that do not match. Failed payouts also happen when the bank account is closed, frozen or has a wrong IFSC or name. Check the dashboard for pending items and contact the merchant helpdesk.
