Our verdict

3.9out of 5

Mailchimp is easy to start with and strong for small stores and newsletters, but its contact-based billing (unsubscribes included) makes it pricier than volume-based rivals as lists grow. Use Free to test, Standard if you need real automation, and compare Brevo if your list is large and sends are light.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Mailchimp?

Mailchimp is the email platform most small businesses try first, and the free tier is usually why. This review explains the Mailchimp free plan limits and pricing as listed on the official pricing page and help centre in October 2026, then checks where the paid tiers make sense for an Indian founder, a D2C store or an agency managing client newsletters. The short version: the free plan is fine for testing, but it is tight, and the paid plans get expensive faster than most people expect because of how contacts are counted.

What Mailchimp is and who it suits

Intuit Mailchimp started in Atlanta in 2001, and Intuit bought it in 2021. Today it is a marketing platform built around email, with SMS add-ons, landing pages, signup forms, reporting and a mobile app for Android and iOS. Your list lives in an "audience", and audience contacts carry tags, groups and purchase data that you can segment on.

It suits three groups well. Small businesses that want a familiar drag-and-drop editor and a big library of mailchimp templates. Shopify and WooCommerce sellers who need abandoned-cart emails and product recommendations. Agencies whose clients already know the brand and expect it. It suits people with large, mostly inactive lists much less, for reasons covered in the pricing section.

Key features in practice

  • Email builder and templates: a drag-and-drop editor with pre-built layouts. The Free plan gets a limited set; paid plans open up the full library, and custom-coded templates can be created on any plan but sent only from Essentials upward.
  • Email automation: the flow builder (Mailchimp calls these customer journeys) handles welcome series, abandoned carts and date-based triggers. Essentials is capped at 4 flow steps; Standard and Premium allow up to 200 flows. Free gets only a preview.
  • Testing and optimisation: A/B testing campaigns is available from Essentials. Multivariate testing, send time optimisation and predictive segmentation start at Standard.
  • Landing pages and forms: landing pages and signup forms come with every plan, Free included. Pop-up forms are listed too, but Mailchimp marks them as a beta with very limited availability.
  • Integrations: the pricing page lists 300+ integrations on all plans, and mailchimp ecommerce integrations cover stores, CRMs and form tools.
  • Generative AI: listed as a no-cost add-on on Standard and Premium only.
  • API: a REST Marketing API with API key or OAuth 2 authentication, plus a separate Transactional API.

Mailchimp free plan limits and pricing in detail

According to Mailchimp's help article on plans, the Free plan allows up to 250 contacts, 500 email sends per month and a daily cap of 250 sends. You get 1 audience, 1 user, basic reporting and a smaller template set. If you go over 250 contacts, Mailchimp places a hold that blocks live and test sends until you upgrade or trim the list. You can still import contacts and edit emails while the hold is on.

What Free leaves out matters more than the numbers. There is no email scheduling, no A/B testing, no SMS, only a preview of automation flows, no branding removal (every email carries a Mailchimp footer badge), and support is email-only for the first 30 days.

Paid plans, at the lowest contact tier shown on the US pricing page, look like this:

PlanListed priceContactsMonthly sendsUsers
Free$0Up to 250500 (250/day)1
Essentials$13/mo500 at base price, max 50,00010x contacts3
Standard$20/mo500 at base price, max 100,00012x contacts5
Premium$350/mo10,000 at base price, max 200,00015x contactsUnlimited

Read the small print on those figures. The pricing page labels each paid price as the rate "for the first 12 months" and leaves the follow-on rate unstated, so check what you will pay in year two at checkout before you commit. Essentials and Standard come with a 14-day free trial, and Premium has a one-month trial for qualified new customers through sales. Accounts with 10,000+ contacts get 15% off the first 12 months, nonprofits can ask billing for a 15% discount, and infrequent senders can buy pay-as-you-go email credits instead of a monthly plan.

The detail that catches people out: Mailchimp bills on total contacts, and its help docs say subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count. Only archived, cleaned or deleted contacts drop out of the bill. If you import 3,000 old leads and half of them unsubscribe, you still pay for all 3,000 until you archive them. Going over your tier mid-cycle does not stop sending, but you get an overage charge.

A simple example shows why this matters. Say a Pune coaching institute has 1,800 contacts after two years, of which 600 have unsubscribed and 300 bounced. Bounced addresses that Mailchimp has cleaned stop counting, but the 600 unsubscribes stay on the bill. Archiving them before renewal can move the account down a contact tier. Doing that once a quarter is the cheapest saving available on this platform, and it costs nothing but ten minutes in the Audience dashboard.

The send multipliers are generous for most small senders. On Standard at the 500-contact tier, 12x means 6,000 sends a month, enough for weekly newsletters plus automations. Premium's 15x multiplier only becomes relevant for brands mailing several times a week.

Mailchimp transactional (Mandrill)

Order confirmations and password resets run through a separate product. Mailchimp transactional mandrill pricing is sold in blocks: each block is 25,000 emails, priced at $20 per block for 1 to 20 blocks, falling to $10 per block above 160 blocks. It is an add-on only for Standard, Premium or the legacy Monthly plan; Essentials is not eligible. New users can send up to 500 test emails to a verified domain, and a dedicated IP costs $29.95 a month. For a small app that needs only transactional mail, that minimum spend (Standard plus a block) is high.

Mailchimp pricing in India: currency, GST and payment

We could not confirm an INR price list. The pricing page we checked displays US dollars, and Mailchimp's payment help article does not mention rupees. It says Mailchimp accepts major credit and debit cards and PayPal, that card payers can usually choose a billing currency, and that PayPal is charged in USD. Plan prices exclude tax. Mailchimp's APAC tax article lists India under Goods and Services Tax, and says a registered business can add its GSTIN to self-assess, which removes GST from future invoices. In practice, an Indian company should use an international-enabled card or PayPal, add the GSTIN before the first invoice, and expect bank forex charges on top.

Mailchimp vs Brevo

Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) builds its paid tiers around monthly email volume. Its help centre lists a Free plan with 300 emails a day and up to 100,000 stored contacts, though every free email carries a "Sent with Brevo" badge. Brevo's own pricing data puts Starter at $9 a month and Standard at $18 a month at the 5,000-email tier. There is a catch: the lower volume tiers also cap marketing contacts (500 contacts at 5,000 emails, 2,500 at 15,000), and the cap only opens up to 500,000 from the 20,000-email tier. So run the numbers on the tier you would really need before assuming Brevo is cheaper. Mailchimp's editor, reporting and template range feel more polished, and its ecommerce add-ons go further. For a large list that you mail only a couple of times a month, Brevo's volume-based model usually works out cheaper.

Mailchimp vs Klaviyo

Klaviyo is built for ecommerce first, with deep Shopify data, flows and SMS. Its help centre says it bills on "billable profiles", meaning profiles still eligible to receive your marketing, and suppressed or unsubscribed profiles are dropped from the billable count once processed. That is a meaningful difference from Mailchimp, where unsubscribed contacts keep costing you. Klaviyo's list prices did not load for verification, so compare quotes for your profile count directly. Pick Klaviyo for a revenue-heavy store with complex segments. Pick Mailchimp if you run a mixed business (services, content, some products) and want simpler tools.

Free Mailchimp alternatives worth a look

If 250 contacts is too small, Brevo's free tier stores far more contacts with a daily send cap instead. Klaviyo also offers a free plan. MailerLite's Free plan matches Mailchimp on contacts (250 subscribers) but allows 2,500 emails a month and 2 users, with paid plans from $12 a month. Constant Contact, by contrast, has no free plan; its pricing page lists Lite from $12, Standard from $35 and Premium from $80 a month, with a free trial and up to 15% off for annual prepayment.

Is it a CRM, and is it easy to use?

Mailchimp calls its audience tools a marketing CRM. The mailchimp crm side covers contact profiles, tags, segments, purchase history and an inbox in the mobile app. It has no sales pipeline or deal tracking, so it does not replace HubSpot or Zoho CRM for a sales team. On ease of use, the editor and campaign wizard are among the easier ones in this category, and the help centre is large. The harder parts are the billing rules and the automation builder once flows branch.

Privacy, data and deliverability notes

Mailchimp is covered by Intuit's Global Privacy Statement. You own your list, but you must have permission to email it, and sending purchased lists breaks the acceptable use rules and hurts reputation. When emails land in spam, the usual causes are an unauthenticated sending domain, a free webmail From address, stale or bought contacts, and spammy subject lines. Authenticate your domain with SPF and DKIM, clean inactive contacts every quarter, and use a double opt-in form.

Limitations to weigh before paying

  • Unsubscribed contacts count toward billing, so list hygiene is a cost task, not just a deliverability one.
  • The jump from Standard to Premium ($20 to $350 at the base tier) is steep.
  • Essentials automation is capped at 4 flow steps.
  • No confirmed INR pricing; GST and forex add to the dollar price.
  • Transactional email needs Standard or above.

How to get started

Sign up for the Free plan and verify your sending domain first. Import only contacts who opted in, then archive anyone inactive for a year so they do not inflate your count. To create an email campaign, open Campaigns, choose Email, pick an audience and segment, write a subject line, select a template, edit the content, send a test to yourself, then send or (on paid plans) schedule. Once you need A/B tests or a welcome flow, start the 14-day Standard trial rather than Essentials, because the automation gap between the two is large.

Mailchimp FAQ

Is Mailchimp free?

Yes, Mailchimp has a Free plan with no time limit. It allows up to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, with a daily cap of 250. Scheduling, A/B testing, SMS, full automation flows and branding removal need a paid plan.

How many contacts are allowed on the Mailchimp free plan?

The Free plan allows up to 250 contacts in one audience. Unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts count toward that total, while archived and cleaned contacts do not. Going over the limit puts a hold on sending until you upgrade or reduce the list.

Is Mailchimp a CRM?

Mailchimp describes its audience tools as a marketing CRM, with contact profiles, tags, segments and purchase data. It lacks sales pipelines and deal tracking. Teams that run a sales process usually pair it with a dedicated CRM.

How do I create an email campaign in Mailchimp?

Go to Campaigns, choose Email, and select the audience or segment you want to reach. Add a subject line, pick a template, edit the content and send yourself a test. Then send it now, or schedule it if you are on a paid plan.

Is Mailchimp easy to use?

For basic newsletters it is one of the easier tools, with a drag-and-drop editor and a guided campaign flow. Branching automations and the contact billing rules take longer to understand. The help centre is large and covers most tasks step by step.

How does Mailchimp compare with Constant Contact?

Mailchimp has a Free plan, while Constant Contact offers only a free trial. Constant Contact's pricing page lists Lite from $12, Standard from $35 and Premium from $80 a month. Mailchimp's Essentials starts at $13 and Standard at $20 at the lowest tier (listed as first-12-month prices), and both services raise prices as your contact count grows.

Mailchimp vs Sendinblue (Brevo): which is cheaper?

Brevo, formerly Sendinblue, sets its paid tiers by monthly email volume, with Starter from $9 and Standard from $18 at 5,000 emails, though those low tiers also cap marketing contacts at 500. Its free tier allows 300 emails a day and stores up to 100,000 contacts. Because Mailchimp charges by contacts, Brevo tends to cost less for a big list that is emailed lightly, once you are on a tier with a high contact cap.

Can I pay Mailchimp from India?

Yes. Mailchimp accepts major credit and debit cards and PayPal, and PayPal is billed in USD. GST applies to Indian accounts, and registered businesses can add a GSTIN to self-assess and remove GST from future invoices.

What are the best Mailchimp alternatives?

Brevo suits volume-based senders with big lists, and Klaviyo suits ecommerce stores that need deep Shopify data and SMS. MailerLite's Free plan allows 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, with paid plans from $12. Constant Contact is a paid-only option starting at $12 a month.

Why do Mailchimp emails go to spam?

Common causes are an unauthenticated domain, a free webmail From address, old or purchased contacts and spam-like subject lines. Authenticating your domain with SPF and DKIM, using double opt-in and cleaning inactive contacts usually helps. Low engagement over time also hurts inbox placement.
