Our verdict
ActiveCampaign is worth paying for when your emails need to react to what contacts do, and Plus is the realistic starting tier for that. Newsletter-only senders and Shopify-first stores will usually get better value from Mailchimp, Brevo or Klaviyo.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is ActiveCampaign?
In July 2024 ActiveCampaign retired its Lite plan, which began at $29 a month for 1,000 contacts, and replaced it with Starter at $15. That price cut is the reason many small teams look at the tool again, and it is also where the confusion starts, because the cheap plan caps every automation at five actions. This review sets out ActiveCampaign pricing plans and automation features as the official pricing page and help centre describe them in October 2026.
The short version: ActiveCampaign is used for behaviour-triggered email marketing, where a contact's clicks, page visits, purchases or form answers decide what they receive next. Chicago-based ActiveCampaign (founded in 2003) sells mainly to small and mid-sized businesses, ecommerce stores, course creators and the agencies that run campaigns for them.
From Lite to Starter: ActiveCampaign Starter vs Plus vs Pro and Enterprise
All four email plans now start at a 1,000-contact band, and the price rises with each band (2,500, 5,000, 7,500, 10,000 and so on). The live pricing page loads its figures through a script and asks you to pick a contact band, so a plain copy of the page carries no dollar amounts. The prices below are reported figures, check the pricing page before you buy: Starter's $15 comes from ActiveCampaign's own July 2024 announcement, and the Plus, Pro and Enterprise numbers are the 1,000-contact annual rates that two independent trackers (both updated in August 2026) agree on.
| Plan | Reported from (1,000 contacts, billed yearly) | Users | Email sends per month | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $15/mo | 1 | 10x contacts | 5 actions per automation, email only, 25,000-contact ceiling, one extra seat can be bought |
| Plus | $49/mo | 1 | 10x contacts | No five-action cap, landing pages, AI content generation, every add-on can be bought |
| Pro | $79/mo | 3 | 12x contacts | Conditional content, predictive sending, revenue attribution, custom event tracking, priority support |
| Enterprise | $145/mo | 5 | 15x contacts | SSO, HIPAA support, custom reports included, Salesforce and Dynamics 365 sync, dedicated support team |
Month-to-month billing costs more. Both trackers report Starter at $19 and Plus at $59 on monthly terms, but they give different monthly figures for Pro and Enterprise, so treat those as unknown until you see them in checkout. There is no free plan. What you get instead is a 14-day trial with no card required, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee advertised on the pricing page. The trial runs on the Professional feature set, which is useful for testing but means you are trying features Starter will take away.
Starter is fine for a welcome series and a monthly newsletter. The jump to Plus is where ActiveCampaign becomes the product people recommend: no cap on automation steps, landing pages, AI-written copy and the option to bolt on SMS marketing or the CRM. Pro (about $30 more at the reported rates) adds conditional content blocks, predictive sending (each contact gets the email at the hour they usually open), split-path automation tests and three seats instead of one. Existing customers cannot downgrade into Starter, according to the help centre's plan summary.
The send multiplier, contact counting and other costs that grow quietly
Each plan has a monthly email limit expressed as a multiple of your contact band. A Plus account on 2,500 contacts can send 25,000 campaign and automation emails a month; one-to-one and transactional emails do not count. Go over and sending continues, but the help centre lists an overage charge of $0.005 per email, and if overage reaches three times your limit, sending stops until the next cycle. Trial accounts get only 100 sends in total.
Contact counting changed in November 2025. For accounts created from 3 November 2025, every contact counts toward your band regardless of list status, so unsubscribed and bounced records keep occupying paid space until you clear them out. Older accounts count only active contacts. Hit the ceiling without auto-upgrade switched on and campaigns stop, and "send an email" steps inside automations are skipped while contacts keep moving through them.
Then come the add-ons. The pricing table places lead scoring and the deals pipeline inside the Pipelines (Enhanced CRM) add-on, and win probability inside the Sales Engagement add-on, both sold only on Plus and above. SMS, transactional email via Postmark, custom reports (bundled only on Enterprise), extra user seats and an AI Activities pack for translations and AI actions are also separate purchases. ActiveCampaign also sells WhatsApp plans (Core, Advanced and Premium, with 25x to 100x message allowances), which can be paired with Plus or a higher email tier. A team that wants email, SMS and a sales pipeline should price the bundle, not the headline plan.
Five ActiveCampaign automation recipes worth building first
The automations builder is a vertical flowchart. You pick a trigger (subscribes to a list, submits a form, visits a page, tag added, purchase made), then stack actions, waits and if/else branches underneath. To create an automation, open Automations, choose "Create an automation", either start from scratch or pick a template from the recipe library, set the trigger, and add steps with the plus icon.
- Welcome series with a branch on engagement. Send email one, wait two days, then split by whether the contact opened it. Non-openers get a different subject line.
- Abandoned cart. Connect Shopify or WooCommerce through the deep data integration, trigger on cart abandonment, and send a reminder after one hour and a second after a day.
- Pricing-page follow-up. Site tracking records visits to your pricing URL; a contact who views it twice in a week can be tagged and handed to sales.
- Split automation test (Pro and up). The split action sends half your contacts down path A and half down path B, so you can compare a three-email sequence against a five-email one with real conversion data.
- Re-engagement and cleanup. Contacts silent for 120 days get one last email, and anyone who ignores it is unsubscribed.
Remember the Starter limit: the welcome series above already uses more than five actions once waits and branches are counted, which is why most buyers end up on Plus.
Measuring ActiveCampaign pricing plans and automation features against Klaviyo for online stores
For an ecommerce brand the real rival is often Klaviyo, not Mailchimp. Klaviyo was built around store data: its Shopify sync pulls product catalogues, order history and predicted lifetime value into segmentation without extra setup, SMS sits inside the same product, and it has a free tier. ActiveCampaign's store integrations cover abandoned carts and purchase triggers well, but its strength is mixed businesses: a D2C brand that also runs B2B sales, a coaching business with a sales call step, or an agency managing lead nurturing. If your funnel includes humans closing deals, ActiveCampaign's CRM add-ons tip the balance.
ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp for a list under 2,500 contacts
Mailchimp still wins on the first rupee spent. Its free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, and Essentials is listed at $13 a month for 500 contacts, with Standard at $20. ActiveCampaign has no free tier and Starter begins at a 1,000-contact band. Where ActiveCampaign pulls ahead is branching logic: if/else conditions on almost any field, goal steps that let contacts jump ahead in a sequence, and site tracking even on Starter. Mailchimp's flows have improved, but Essentials limits them to four steps. A weekly newsletter will not feel the difference; trial-to-paid onboarding will.
ActiveCampaign vs HubSpot once a sales team gets involved
HubSpot's free CRM is generous and Marketing Hub Starter is listed at $20 per seat a month, but the tier with serious workflows, Marketing Hub Professional, is $800 a month on annual billing with three seats and a one-time $3,000 onboarding fee. ActiveCampaign Pro plus the Pipelines add-on gets a small team a deals pipeline, lead scoring and automation for a fraction of that. HubSpot is the better choice for companies that want marketing, sales, service and website hosting in one system with heavy reporting. ActiveCampaign CRM is lighter: good for a two or three person sales team working deals that marketing automation has warmed up.
Deliverability, AI tools and what happens to your data
Is ActiveCampaign good for deliverability? Third-party inbox-placement studies usually place it in the better half of the market, but no vendor can rescue a dirty list. Authenticate your own sending domain (SPF, DKIM and DMARC) on day one, and keep complaint and bounce rates low, because those numbers decide inbox placement far more than the platform you pick.
On AI, Active Intelligence (the built-in assistant that drafts campaigns, segments and automations) is on every plan, but the pricing page marks access as limited on Starter and Plus. Plus adds AI content generation for subject lines and email copy, and Pro adds predictive sending. At its spring 2026 keynote the company announced agent-style AI that carries out tasks rather than only answering prompts. The pricing page does not state whether customer content trains these models, so read the privacy policy before uploading sensitive lists. Enterprise is the tier with SSO and HIPAA support.
Paying from India, and why ActiveCampaign accounts get suspended
There is no INR price. Billing currencies offered are USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD and BRL, and the help centre documents card and PayPal payment. Indian buyers usually pay in dollars on an international credit card, so budget for your bank's foreign-exchange markup, and ask your accountant how GST applies to imported software. Annual billing brings the per-month figure down, so it makes sense once you are sure of your contact band.
Suspensions surprise new users more than pricing. ActiveCampaign reviews accounts against its acceptable use policy, and the common triggers are imported lists without clear consent, high bounce rates and spam complaints on the first sends. Purchased or scraped lists are the fastest route to a frozen account. Import only opted-in contacts, warm up gradually, and reply quickly if compliance asks where a list came from.
Who should pay for it, and the cheaper tools for everyone else
ActiveCampaign is best for businesses whose emails depend on behaviour: SaaS onboarding, course funnels, B2B lead nurturing and agencies running several of these for clients. The activecampaign integrations marketplace covers Shopify, WooCommerce, Square, WordPress, Salesforce (Enterprise), Zapier, and hundreds of others, plus a REST API.
If you mainly send newsletters, Mailchimp or MailerLite will cost less. Brevo charges by email volume rather than contacts and lists rupee prices, which suits large lists that you email rarely. Klaviyo suits Shopify-first stores, and HubSpot suits companies that want one vendor for marketing and sales.
A 14-day trial plan that answers the buying question
On day one, authenticate your sending domain and install the site tracking code. Import a small, clean segment rather than your full list (trial sends are capped at 100). Build one real automation with at least two branches, then count its actions to see whether Starter's five-step cap would break it. Test the Sales Engagement add-on and the Salesforce sync if a sales team is involved, because the trial includes both. Before day 14, compare the bill for your exact contact band on Plus against Pro, and decide whether predictive sending and extra seats are worth the difference.

ActiveCampaign FAQ
What is ActiveCampaign used for?
ActiveCampaign is used for email marketing automation that reacts to behaviour, such as welcome series, abandoned-cart reminders, lead nurturing and onboarding sequences. Paid add-ons extend it to SMS and a sales CRM with deal pipelines, so marketing and a small sales team can work from the same contact records.
Does ActiveCampaign have a free plan?
No. ActiveCampaign does not offer a free plan. It offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required, which runs on the Professional feature set and is capped at 100 email sends.
How much does ActiveCampaign cost per month?
Reported prices at 1,000 contacts on annual billing are $15 a month for Starter, $49 for Plus, $79 for Pro and $145 for Enterprise; check the pricing page, which shows the live figure for your contact band. Monthly billing costs more (Starter is reported at $19 and Plus at $59), and every larger contact band raises the bill.
How do I create an automation in ActiveCampaign?
Go to Automations, click Create an automation and either start from scratch or choose a template from the recipe library. Pick a trigger such as a form submission or tag, add actions, waits and if/else branches with the plus icon, then set the automation to Active. On Starter, each automation is limited to five actions.
Is ActiveCampaign good for deliverability?
Third-party inbox-placement studies usually rank ActiveCampaign among the better performers, and it supports SPF, DKIM and DMARC authentication on your own domain. Results still depend mostly on list quality, so import only opted-in contacts and prune inactive ones. Keeping bounces and complaints low matters more than the vendor.
ActiveCampaign vs Klaviyo: which is better for ecommerce?
Klaviyo is usually the better fit for a store that runs almost entirely on Shopify, because its catalogue and order sync, built-in SMS and free tier are designed around ecommerce. ActiveCampaign suits stores that also run B2B sales, consultations or lead nurturing, where its CRM add-ons and branching automations matter more.
Can I pay for ActiveCampaign from India?
Yes, but there is no INR pricing. The pricing page offers USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD and BRL, and the help centre documents card and PayPal payment, so Indian buyers usually pay in dollars on an international card and should allow for their bank's forex markup.
What are the best ActiveCampaign alternatives?
Mailchimp and MailerLite are cheaper for simple newsletters, Brevo prices by email volume instead of contacts, Klaviyo is built for Shopify stores, and HubSpot Marketing Hub suits companies that want marketing and sales in one larger suite. The right choice depends on whether you need deep automation or just regular sends.
Why was my ActiveCampaign account suspended?
Accounts are usually suspended after a compliance review under the acceptable use policy, most often because of imported lists without clear consent, high bounce rates or spam complaints. Purchased or scraped lists are a common cause. Reply to the compliance team with details of how the contacts opted in to get the account reviewed.
Who is ActiveCampaign best for?
It is best for small and mid-sized businesses, SaaS companies, course creators and agencies whose emails depend on what contacts do, not just a fixed newsletter schedule. Teams that only send a weekly newsletter will usually find a cheaper tool enough.
