Our verdict

4.1out of 5

Jira is still the safest pick for software teams that need sprints, custom workflows and reporting that scale. Start on the free 10-user plan, and move to Standard only when you outgrow it; most small teams never need Premium.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Jira?

Jira is Atlassian's work-tracking app for software and business teams, and the question most buyers start with is jira software pricing per user. The short answer: up to 10 people can use it free, and paid seats begin at $9.70 a month on the Standard plan from 13 October 2026, according to Atlassian's own list pricing tables. This review explains what you get for that money, where the costs climb, and how it compares with simpler tools.

What is Jira used for?

Jira tracks units of work as they move through a process. Development teams use it for bug tracking, backlogs and release planning. Marketing, HR and operations teams use the same product for content calendars, hiring pipelines and approval flows. Each project can run on a scrum board with time-boxed sprints or on a kanban board with a continuous flow, and larger pieces of work are grouped into jira epics so managers can see progress without reading every ticket.

One naming point matters here. On 1 May 2024, Atlassian's own announcement blog confirmed that Jira Software and Jira Work Management were being combined into one product, now just called Jira. Business-team features such as the calendar view and work management templates now come with every Jira subscription instead of a separate product. So when older articles quote "Jira Software" and "Jira Work Management" prices side by side, treat them as one product today.

Who should consider it

Jira suits engineering teams, from a small squad to a department of thousands, that want strict process control: custom statuses, required fields, approval steps and audit history. It also suits agencies that run client work in separate projects with different permission schemes. Solo freelancers and very small non-technical teams will probably find it heavier than they need.

Key features in practice

  • Boards and backlogs: Scrum and kanban templates, backlog grooming, story points and burndown reports.
  • Jira workflows: You design the statuses and transitions, add conditions (only QA can close a bug) and validators.
  • Jira automation: No-code rules such as "when a pull request merges, move the ticket to Done". Atlassian meters these in steps: 150 a month for the whole Free subscription, then 400, 750 and 1,000 per user a month on Standard, Premium and Enterprise.
  • Jira query language JQL: A search syntax that powers filters, dashboards and bulk edits.
  • Timeline and Plans: Jira roadmaps live in the timeline view, while Atlassian's advanced Plans feature for cross-team planning is limited to Premium and Enterprise.
  • Rovo AI: Atlassian's AI layer for search, chat and agents, included in paid cloud plans.
  • Integrations: Confluence for docs, Bitbucket and other Git hosts for code, and a large catalogue of add-ons on the Atlassian Marketplace.
  • Mobile and API: Android and iOS apps, plus a REST API with webhooks.

Jira free plan limits

Atlassian's plan comparison lists the Free plan at up to 10 users with 2 GB of file storage and community support only. You get a single site and no uptime SLA. Data residency, which lets you pin data to a chosen region, is not offered on Free. Rovo credits are listed only for Standard, Premium and Enterprise, so treat the free tier as a manual Jira with boards, backlogs and basic reports. For a startup of eight developers that is genuinely usable; the pain starts when the eleventh person joins, because you then pay for every seat, not just the extra one.

Jira software pricing per user, plan by plan

Atlassian publishes monthly list prices per user in bands. The more users you have, the lower the rate for each seat. New list prices took effect on 13 October 2026; the table below shows the first few bands in USD.

Users (monthly billing)Standard, per userPremium, per user
1 to 100$9.70$19.60
101 to 250$8.20$14.65
251 to 1,000$6.85$10.20
1,001 to 2,500$6.20$9.90
45,001 and above$2.70$5.80

Annual billing is priced by user tier rather than per seat. For 10 users, Standard costs $950 a year and Premium $1,950. At 50 users the figures are $4,850 and $9,800. Enterprise is annual only, sold through Atlassian's sales team, and its list table begins at 1,000 users for $179,000 a year. Before this round, the 1 to 100 band was $9.05 for Standard and $18.30 for Premium, so the October change is about 7% for small teams.

Some quick maths shows why annual billing is worth a look. A 10-person team on monthly Standard pays 10 x $9.70, or $97 a month, which is $1,164 over a year; the annual quote for 10 users is $950. For 25 users the monthly route works out to $2,910 a year against an annual price of $2,450. Premium roughly doubles both numbers, so check whether you really need its SLA and planning tools before upgrading.

What changes between tiers? Standard raises storage to 250 GB, adds local business-hours support and opens data residency. Premium brings unlimited storage, 24/7 support, a 99.9% uptime SLA and cross-project planning. Enterprise lifts the SLA to 99.95% and allows up to 150 sites.

Indian buyers should know that the public list tables we checked are in USD (Atlassian also publishes JPY tables for Japan); we did not find a separate rupee price list. Budget for marketplace apps too. Time tracking, test management and advanced reporting often come from paid add-ons billed per user on top of Jira.

Rovo and AI in Jira

Atlassian's licensing page says Rovo is included in Standard, Premium and Enterprise cloud plans, with a monthly allowance of Rovo credits per user: 25 on Standard, 70 on Premium and 150 on Enterprise for Jira. Credits are pooled across the organisation and reset each month. Admins can turn AI features off. On training, Atlassian's trust page states that its third-party model providers do not use your inputs and outputs to improve their services, though Atlassian may use de-identified metadata to fine-tune open-source models it hosts, subject to data contribution settings.

Data residency, security and Data Center status

Atlassian's support docs list India (Asia Pacific, Mumbai region) among supported data residency locations for Jira, alongside Australia, the EU, Japan, the USA and others. It is available on Standard and above, but India is not assigned automatically even for Indian organisations; an admin has to pin it. That matters for companies with customer data commitments.

Is Jira Cloud secure? Atlassian's trust centre lists ISO 27001, SOC reports and FedRAMP among its compliance programmes. Self-hosting is ending. Server support stopped on 15 February 2024. For Data Center, sales to new customers ended on 30 March 2026, expansions for existing customers end on 30 March 2028, and the products reach end of life on 28 March 2029, when they become read-only. If you are evaluating Jira today, plan for cloud.

Jira Service Management vs Jira Software

Jira (the product that used to be Jira Software) is for teams tracking their own work. Jira Service Management is a separate product for help desks: it adds a customer portal, SLA timers, queues and agent licences, and it is priced on its own. If your IT team handles employee tickets, use the service desk product; if your developers are shipping features, the main Jira plan is the right one. Many companies run both, linked so that a support ticket can spawn a bug for engineering.

Jira vs Trello

Both come from Atlassian. Trello is a simple card board: its free tier allows up to 10 collaborators per Workspace and 10 boards, and Standard costs $5 per user a month billed annually ($6 monthly). Trello is faster to learn, but it has no native sprints, epics or JQL. Pick Trello for light task lists and Jira when you need reporting and process rules.

Jira vs Asana

Asana's free Personal plan allows only 2 seats per project and team, and Starter costs $10.99 per user a month billed annually ($13.49 monthly). Asana is friendlier for marketing and operations teams and has cleaner portfolio views. Jira wins for software work because of its developer integrations, granular workflows and lower per-seat price on Standard.

Jira vs Linear, GitHub Issues and Azure DevOps

ToolFree tierEntry paid price
JiraUp to 10 users, 2 GB$9.70/user/mo (Standard)
LinearUnlimited members, 2 teams, 250 issues$10/user/mo billed yearly (Basic)
Azure DevOpsFirst 5 users free (Basic)$6/user/mo after 5 users

Linear is quicker and more opinionated, which many startups like, but its free plan stops at 250 issues and it offers fewer workflow controls. GitHub Issues lives inside your repositories and costs nothing extra if you already use GitHub, yet it lacks Jira's permission schemes and cross-team planning. Azure DevOps is a sensible choice for Microsoft-heavy shops because Boards, Repos and Pipelines come in one bundle. Other common alternatives include ClickUp, Monday.com and the Trello and Asana options above.

Limitations to weigh

  • Setup takes effort. A badly configured Jira with 30 statuses slows everyone down.
  • List prices went up again on 13 October 2026, by about 7% for teams under 100 users.
  • The 10-user cap on Free creates a sharp jump once you grow.
  • Useful extras often mean paid Marketplace apps.

How to get started

Sign up at atlassian.com with a work email and pick a scrum or kanban template. To create a sprint, open the project backlog, click Create sprint, drag work items into it, then choose Start sprint and set the dates and goal. Next, write a few saved filters. A basic JQL query looks like project = WEB AND status = "In Progress" ORDER BY priority DESC. You combine fields, operators and keywords such as AND, OR and ORDER BY. Connect Confluence for specs, link your Git host, and add one or two automation rules before inviting the wider team. Stay on Free until you hit 10 users, then compare Standard's monthly and annual quotes for your exact headcount.

Jira FAQ

What is Jira used for?

Jira is used to plan, track and report on work. Software teams use it for backlogs, sprints and bug tracking, while business teams use it for approvals, calendars and process tracking since Atlassian folded Jira Work Management into Jira in May 2024.

Is Jira free for small teams?

Yes. Atlassian's Free plan supports up to 10 users with 2 GB of storage and community support. Once you need an 11th user, every seat moves to a paid plan.

How much does Jira cost per user in India?

Atlassian's public list tables are in USD, and we found no separate rupee price list. From 13 October 2026, Standard is $9.70 and Premium $19.60 per user a month for 1 to 100 users, with lower rates in larger bands. Annual billing for 10 users is $950 (Standard) or $1,950 (Premium).

How do I create a sprint in Jira?

Open a scrum project's backlog and click Create sprint. Drag work items into the new sprint, then click Start sprint, set the duration and add a sprint goal.

Is Jira Cloud secure?

Atlassian's trust centre lists ISO 27001, SOC reports and FedRAMP among its compliance programmes. Paid plans can pin data to a region such as India, and Premium and Enterprise add uptime SLAs of 99.9% and 99.95%.

Jira vs Trello: which should I choose?

Both are made by Atlassian. Trello is a simple card board, free for up to 10 collaborators per Workspace, with Standard at $5 per user a month billed annually. Choose Jira if you need sprints, epics, JQL and strict workflows.

Jira vs GitHub Issues: what is the difference?

GitHub Issues sits inside your repositories and needs no extra product if you already use GitHub. Jira adds custom workflows, permission schemes, cross-team planning and detailed reporting, which matter more as teams grow.

Jira vs Azure DevOps: which is better?

Azure DevOps bundles Boards, Repos and Pipelines, and its Basic plan is free for the first 5 users and $6 per user a month after that. It suits Microsoft-centred teams, while Jira offers more workflow flexibility and a larger app marketplace.

What are the best Jira alternatives?

Common alternatives are Linear for fast, opinionated issue tracking, Trello for simple boards, Asana for business project management, Azure DevOps for Microsoft shops and GitHub Issues for code-centred teams. ClickUp and Monday.com are also widely used.

How do I write JQL queries in Jira?

JQL combines a field, an operator and a value, such as project = WEB AND status = "In Progress". You can join conditions with AND or OR and sort with ORDER BY, then save the query as a filter for boards and dashboards.
