Our verdict
Hootsuite is worth paying for if you run several brands, need a shared inbox with approvals or want Talkwalker listening. For a solo marketer or a small Indian business, a $99 dollar-billed seat is hard to justify when Buffer, Zoho Social or Meta Business Suite cover the basics for far less.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Hootsuite?
Hootsuite now lists four plans, and the cheapest self-serve seat costs $99 per user per month on annual billing. Professional sits at $199, Advanced tops out at $399, and Enterprise is quoted by sales. With no free tier left, many Indian founders search for Hootsuite pricing plans and free alternative tools before they renew. The Vancouver company has been around for 18 years and, in June 2026, reorganised its whole product into what it calls Social OS: Perch for planning and publishing, Nest for the inbox, Lumen by Talkwalker for listening, Parliament for employee advocacy and Wisdom, an AI agent that ties them together. The real question is whether a small team uses enough of that to justify the bill.
Hootsuite free plan discontinued: what you get instead
Hootsuite dropped its free plan in 2023, according to Canadian news reports from February that year, and the plans page today shows no free option at all. What remains is a 14-day free trial of the paid plans. The plans page says you do not need a credit card and you are not charged automatically when the trial ends.
The trial has limits worth knowing before you plan around it. Trial accounts can publish only 10 to 20 posts a day per organisation, depending on the plan, and bulk scheduling is switched off. Two weeks goes quickly. Pick one live campaign and run it end to end so the trial answers a real question.
What a $99 Standard seat actually covers
Standard is the plan most freelancers and small shops will start with. According to the plans page, it covers up to 10 social accounts, unlimited scheduled posts, AI help for writing posts and generating images, a single social inbox for comments and messages, and brand and competitor monitoring. Wisdom, the AI agent, is included on every plan.
Once a paid plan is active, the bulk scheduler lets you queue a large batch of posts in one go, which is handy for a month of festival content. The calendar now lives in Perch's Planner, and Hootsuite added native TikTok and Threads content to it in August 2026. Older tutorials describe Hootsuite streams, the column view for watching mentions and hashtags; the current plans page talks about monitoring instead, so check how it looks in your trial.
The $99 figure is the annual-billing rate for one seat. The plans page confirms that monthly billing is available and costs more per user, but it does not print the monthly figure. Every extra teammate is another seat, and listed prices exclude taxes.
| Plan | Price (annual billing) | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $99/user/mo | Up to 10 social accounts, unlimited scheduling, AI posts and images, one inbox, monitoring |
| Professional | $199/user/mo | Unlimited accounts, inbox and workflow automation, 90-day trend forecasts, custom reports |
| Advanced | Up to $399/user/mo | Content approvals, message assignment and auto-routing, team performance tracking |
| Enterprise | Custom quote | Advanced listening, SSO, compliance tools, Salesforce integration, Parliament advocacy |
Hootsuite Professional vs Team plan: old names, new line-up
Plenty of comparison posts and YouTube videos still pit Professional against Team. Team no longer appears on the plans page, so any price quoted for it is historical. Professional, on the other hand, is back as the middle tier at $199 per user per month on annual billing.
The split today runs like this. Standard suits one person or a small crew handling up to 10 profiles. Professional removes the account cap and adds automation for inbox replies and workflows, deeper listening and custom reports. Advanced is where team features begin: approvals on drafts, routing messages to the right person and measuring how the team performs. If your setup needs a manager to sign off posts, budget for Advanced rather than Professional.
From OwlyGPT to Wisdom, plus Lumen listening
The Owly AI tools that earlier reviews describe have been folded into one assistant. Hootsuite's own Wisdom page says OwlyGPT and Yeti have evolved into Wisdom, which handles content ideas, drafts and questions about social performance. In August 2026 Wisdom also arrived in the mobile app, and a September update added usage tracking against a monthly quota, so heavy users should check their allowance.
Serious social listening now comes from Lumen by Talkwalker. Hootsuite bought Talkwalker in April 2024, and the June 2026 relaunch renamed it. Guides that mention Hootsuite Insights are referring to the older listening product. Employee advocacy, once sold as Hootsuite Amplify, is now Parliament. Both sit with Enterprise on the plans page, so a $99 seat will not include them.
The Hootsuite App Directory remains, with its own terms and a separate API agreement for developers. Salesforce integration is listed as an Enterprise feature.
Scheduling Instagram posts from Hootsuite, and why some fail
Hootsuite's help centre is clear that personal Instagram profiles cannot be managed at all, because Meta no longer allows third-party tools to connect them. Switch to a business profile first. A business profile linked to a Facebook Page can publish directly from the composer. Without that Page link, posts go out through mobile notification: Hootsuite alerts your phone at the scheduled time and you finish the post in Instagram.
The help article on failed posts lists a few usual causes. Missing permissions top the list, and the fix is to refresh or reconnect the profile without changing what you granted. LinkedIn Pages need a Super Admin user. Media can also fail on format, size or aspect ratio. Networks cap some actions over time too, and Hootsuite suggests waiting about 24 hours before trying again.
Hootsuite vs Buffer for a five-person business
Buffer charges per connected channel rather than per user, keeps a free plan, and is simpler to learn. DevMixa's Buffer review puts its free tier at three channels with 10 scheduled posts each for one user, and Essentials at about $5 per channel per month on annual billing. Five Hootsuite Standard seats, by contrast, start at $495 a month before tax. For a café, a D2C brand with three profiles or a consultant, Buffer usually covers the job for far less. Hootsuite earns its price when you need a shared inbox with routing, listening or approval chains. Run the numbers with your actual headcount and channel count before deciding.
Hootsuite vs Sprout Social for agencies and in-house teams
Sprout Social is the rival Hootsuite meets most often in larger deals. Both charge by the seat, neither has a free plan, and both offer a trial. Sprout's entry Essentials plan starts lower, at $79 per seat according to DevMixa's Sprout Social review, while its Standard plan costs $199 against Hootsuite's $99. Sprout gets steady praise for its inbox and reporting. Hootsuite answers with 10 accounts on its entry seat, Talkwalker-based listening and a broader advocacy product in Parliament. Agencies juggling many brands may lean towards Hootsuite Professional, while support-heavy teams often prefer Sprout's inbox.
Hootsuite pricing plans and free alternative picks for Indian teams
Hootsuite does not show rupee pricing. Its plans page lists Visa, Mastercard, Discover, JCB and PayPal for self-serve plans, with invoicing reserved for Enterprise annual contracts. UPI is not on that list. Recurring charges on Indian cards fall under RBI's e-mandate framework, and some banks decline foreign subscriptions, so annual billing or PayPal can mean fewer failed renewals.
If the bill feels steep, three cheaper routes make sense:
- Meta Business Suite: free scheduling and an inbox, but only for Facebook and Instagram.
- Buffer: a free tier and per-channel pricing that suits one or two people.
- Zoho Social: built by Chennai-based Zoho; check its India pricing page for local rates.
For an agency billing clients in dollars, Hootsuite's cost is easier to absorb. A bootstrapped startup can often manage with one of these three and a shared spreadsheet.
Is connecting your brand accounts to Hootsuite safe?
You link profiles by signing in on each network's own page and granting permissions, which you can later refresh or withdraw. Hootsuite's Trust Center says customer content is hosted on Amazon Web Services in the United States, that it acts as a data processor for that content, and that it undergoes a yearly SOC 2 Type II audit. Single sign-on is an Enterprise feature. The terms of service let you keep the rights to what you post and allow business use, though they also give Hootsuite a broad licence to that content to run and develop its services. Read that section before you route customer DMs through AI features.
Where the Hootsuite bill grows faster than expected
- Every user is a seat, so a team of four pays four times the headline price.
- Standard stops at 10 social accounts; more profiles mean Professional at double the rate.
- Approvals only arrive on Advanced, and listening depth, SSO and Parliament sit with Enterprise.
- Monthly billing costs more than annual, and taxes come on top.
A sensible first week on the Hootsuite trial
Day one: convert Instagram to a business profile, link it to a Facebook Page and connect every account you manage. Day two: set up monitoring for your brand name, one competitor and a campaign hashtag. Day three: schedule a week of posts by hand, keeping the daily trial cap in mind, since bulk upload is off. Day four: send inbox messages to a colleague and see how replies are tracked. Ask Wisdom for a performance summary on day five. By day seven, open Hootsuite Analytics and export a report you would actually send a client or your boss. If it is no better than what you build by hand, simply let the trial lapse.
Who gets their money's worth
Hootsuite is used to plan, publish, monitor and report on social media from one place. It pays off for agencies, multi-brand marketing teams and companies that care about listening and approvals. A solo creator posting to two networks will find better value elsewhere.

Hootsuite FAQ
What is Hootsuite used for?
Hootsuite is a social media management platform. Teams use it to schedule posts to networks such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, TikTok and Threads, answer comments and messages from one inbox, monitor brand mentions and build performance reports.
Does Hootsuite have a free plan?
No. Hootsuite dropped its free plan in 2023 and the current plans page lists only paid plans. You can test them with a 14-day free trial that needs no credit card, though trial accounts have a daily posting cap and no bulk scheduling.
How much does Hootsuite cost per month?
On annual billing, Standard costs $99 per user per month, Professional $199, and Advanced up to $399. Monthly billing costs more per user, but Hootsuite does not publish that rate on its plans page. Enterprise is quoted by sales, and prices exclude taxes.
How do I schedule Instagram posts on Hootsuite?
Convert your Instagram profile to a business profile and connect it in Hootsuite. If it is linked to a Facebook Page, you can publish directly from the composer; if not, Hootsuite sends a mobile notification and you finish the post in Instagram. Personal profiles cannot be connected.
Is Hootsuite safe to connect accounts?
For normal business use, yes. You grant access on each network's own sign-in page and can reconnect or withdraw it later. Hootsuite's Trust Center describes AWS hosting in the US, data-processor terms and an annual SOC 2 Type II audit, and single sign-on is available on Enterprise.
Is Hootsuite or Buffer better for a small business?
For most small businesses with a few profiles, Buffer is cheaper and simpler, and it still has a free plan. Hootsuite makes sense when you need a shared inbox with routing, approvals or listening and can pay per seat.
Does Hootsuite support Indian payment methods?
Not specifically. Hootsuite shows no rupee pricing, and its plans page lists Visa, Mastercard, Discover, JCB and PayPal, with no UPI. Indian cards are subject to RBI e-mandate rules on recurring charges, so annual billing or PayPal can cut down on failed renewals.
What are the best cheaper Hootsuite alternatives?
Meta Business Suite is free for Facebook and Instagram. Buffer has a free tier and low per-channel pricing. Zoho Social is an Indian option worth pricing, and Sprout Social starts lower per seat but climbs quickly on its bigger plans.
Why is Hootsuite not posting to Instagram?
Hootsuite's help centre points first to missing permissions, which reconnecting the profile usually fixes. Media in the wrong format, size or aspect ratio can also fail, and networks cap some actions, so waiting about 24 hours may help. Personal Instagram profiles cannot be managed at all.
Who should use Hootsuite?
Agencies, multi-brand marketing teams and larger companies that need approvals, listening and detailed reports get the most from Hootsuite. Solo creators and very small businesses usually find Buffer, Zoho Social or Meta Business Suite better value.
