Our verdict

4.2out of 5

Buffer is the simplest way for a creator or small business to schedule posts across several networks, and its free plan still works for one brand on three channels. Pay for Essentials once the 10-post queue feels tight, and move to Team only when a second person needs access. Agencies that need listening or ads tools should look at Hootsuite instead.

What is Buffer?

Three channels and a ten-post queue per channel: that is the shape of the Buffer social media scheduler free plan limits as Buffer has published them, and those two numbers decide whether a solo creator in Pune or a small D2C brand in Bengaluru can stay free or needs a paid plan from week one. Buffer, a fully remote company, sells a deliberately plain product: a posting queue, a calendar, and billing that grows with the number of social accounts you connect rather than the number of people using them. This review looks at what the free tier allows, how per-channel billing adds up, and where Hootsuite or Later make more sense. Prices below were read from Buffer's pricing page on 17 October 2026.

Buffer free plan 3 channels: how far ten queued posts go

The Free plan lets one person connect up to three social accounts, keep up to 10 scheduled posts waiting in each channel's queue and store 100 ideas. The cap counts posts that have not gone out yet. Once Monday's post publishes, its slot frees up and you can add another.

For a creator posting once a day on Instagram, LinkedIn and Threads, ten slots give roughly a week and a half of lead time per channel. That covers a personal brand comfortably. It breaks for anyone who batches a month of content in one sitting, or who posts three or four times a day. The Buffer AI Assistant is included on Free too, although AI reply suggestions are capped at five a week.

Choose the three Buffer channels with care. Swapping accounts in and out to cover several brands is clumsy, because every swap means reconnecting a network and rebuilding that channel's queue. In practice the free tier fits one brand on three networks.

Buffer pricing per channel, and what five accounts cost

Billing is by connected channel, not by seat. A LinkedIn profile and a LinkedIn company page are two channels; so are an Instagram account and a Facebook Page. On yearly billing, Essentials costs $5 per channel a month ($60 per channel a year) and Team costs $10 per channel a month ($120 per channel a year). Buffer says annual billing saves you money compared with paying month to month, but the monthly-billing rates were not shown in the page text we read, so flip the toggle on the pricing page to see them. Once you pass ten channels, each extra one is billed at a lower rate.

PlanHow it is billedOfficial price (yearly billing)Cost for 5 channels
FreeNo charge$0Not possible (3-channel cap)
EssentialsPer channel, monthly or annual$5/channel/mo ($60/channel/yr)$300 a year ($25/mo)
TeamPer channel, monthly or annual$10/channel/mo ($120/channel/yr)$600 a year ($50/mo)

Feature splits shift from time to time, so read the plan comparison before choosing. Broadly, Essentials is aimed at one person handling publishing, Buffer analytics and replies, while Team adds colleagues, draft approval and access levels so a junior writer can suggest posts without publishing them. Team allows unlimited team members. A freelancer running four client accounts alone can stay on Essentials; an agency with a reviewer in the loop needs Team.

Both paid plans come with a 14-day free trial, and you can drop back to Free at any point during it. Nonprofits and charities get 50% off paid plans; the help centre has a separate article on how to apply.

Queue scheduling and the Buffer AI Assistant in a normal week

Queue scheduling is still the core idea. You set posting times per channel (say 9:30 am and 6 pm IST on LinkedIn), add posts to the queue, and Buffer drops each one into the next open slot. Any post can be pinned to a fixed date and time instead, and the calendar lets you move things when a launch date slips. The appeal is simple: you plan content, not timestamps.

The Buffer AI Assistant sits inside the composer. Buffer introduced it as a helper for rewriting drafts, trimming them, changing tone and reshaping a post for another network, so it works from your words rather than writing from nothing. Half-formed thoughts go into the ideas board in Buffer's Create area, where they can be sorted and later turned into scheduled posts.

Two smaller tools matter to Instagram-first creators. Shop Grid gives your bio link a clickable grid that mirrors your feed, and Start Page is a basic landing page builder that can replace a separate link-in-bio service. Both have their own help articles.

The Buffer browser extension is the other everyday piece, with help articles covering Chrome and Safari among others. Highlight a line in an article, click the icon, and the text lands in your composer with the link attached. For anyone who shares industry news daily, that removes a lot of copying and pasting.

Scheduling a LinkedIn post through Buffer

Connect your LinkedIn profile or company page from the channel settings and approve access in LinkedIn's own sign-in window. Then open the composer, write the post, attach an image or video, and either add it to the queue or pick a custom time. Buffer's blog has a step-by-step LinkedIn scheduling guide with screenshots if you get stuck. After the post goes live, its results show up in reporting, with the depth depending on your plan.

Why Buffer sometimes fails to publish to Instagram

Most failed Instagram posts trace back to account setup rather than to Buffer. Direct publishing needs an Instagram Business or Creator account. Buffer also supports notification publishing, where your phone gets a reminder and you finish the post yourself. Its Instagram error library maps specific messages to fixes, and the usual culprits are an expired Meta connection (a password change often triggers one), images outside Instagram's size or ratio rules, and videos of the wrong length or format. Reconnecting the channel cures most expired connections, and status.buffer.com shows whether a wider outage is under way.

Buffer vs Hootsuite for a five-client agency

Hootsuite is built for bigger social teams. It has four plans, all priced per user on annual billing: Standard at $99 a month, Professional at $199, Advanced at up to $399 and a custom-priced Enterprise tier. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial. A single Standard seat costs more than many small agencies would pay Buffer for an entire set of client channels. If your agency needs listening, layered approvals or ads in one dashboard, Hootsuite earns its price. If the job is planning, publishing and light reporting for a handful of clients, Buffer handles it for far less money and far less training. Prices change, so compare both pricing pages before you commit.

Buffer vs Later for Instagram and TikTok brands

Later grew up around visual planning for Instagram, with a grid preview and a media library at the centre of the product. Buffer covers part of that ground with Shop Grid, its own grid preview and a calendar, though its feed planning is thinner. Pick Later if Instagram and TikTok drive revenue and you plan by how the feed looks. Pick Buffer if you post evenly across LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky and Instagram, or want to begin on a free plan. Later revises its plans and trial terms, so compare on its own pricing page.

Networks Buffer can post to

A supported channels article in the help centre carries the full, current list. Buffer's own guides and its status page cover Instagram (posts, reels and stories), Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Pinterest and Google Business Profile. Each connected account counts as one of your Buffer channels for billing, so ten regional Facebook Pages means paying for ten channels.

Paying for Buffer from India

There is a help article on accepted payment methods, and card payment is the standard route, so Indian customers generally need a card enabled for international transactions. We found no rupee price on Buffer's site; check the pricing page for the currency shown at checkout. Banks usually add a forex markup to each charge, which makes one annual payment cheaper in rupees than twelve monthly ones. Another help article explains taxes and VAT on Buffer bills. If you need a GST-compliant invoice for input credit, look at the invoice format before committing.

How Buffer handles logins, data and its API

You authorise each social account on the network's own login page, so Buffer never asks for your social passwords. Its legal page links to the privacy policy and terms, and status.buffer.com logs incidents publicly. The company has a long habit of openness, including public shareholder updates and a page showing where subscription money goes. Posting for brands and clients is exactly what the product is for. Developers who want to push posts from their own apps will find a help article on Buffer's API; read the current docs before building on it.

What the Buffer social media scheduler free plan limits leave out

  • Team workflow: the free tier is built for one person, so drafts cannot pass through a colleague or client for approval.
  • Reporting depth: fuller Buffer analytics sit on paid plans.
  • Lead time: a 10-post queue per channel rules out monthly batching.
  • Replies: check the plan comparison to see which tiers include the engagement tools for answering comments.

Paid plans have gaps too. There is no social listening or paid-ads management, and the inbox is far simpler than Sprout Social's or Hootsuite's. Per-channel billing also climbs quickly for brands with many regional pages.

A first week on Buffer that tells you whether to pay

Connect your three most valuable accounts and set two posting slots a day on each. Install the extension and save five articles worth sharing. Park every rough thought in the ideas board for a week, then turn the best ten into queued posts with the AI Assistant's help. At the end of the week, see which slot times drew the most reach. If the 10-post ceiling keeps getting in the way, or a teammate needs access, start the 14-day trial of a paid plan and decide with real numbers. If Buffer feels tight and you would rather not pay, Zoho Social has a Free Edition, and Postiz is an open-source scheduler you can host yourself.

Buffer FAQ

What is Buffer?

Buffer is a web and mobile tool for planning, scheduling and analysing posts across networks such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Pinterest. It is known for its simple posting queue and for billing by connected channel. Paid plans add deeper analytics and team workflows.

Is Buffer free to use?

Yes, Buffer has a permanent Free plan. It covers up to three channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel for a single user. Essentials costs $5 and Team $10 per channel a month on yearly billing, and both paid plans have a 14-day free trial.

How many posts can I schedule on Buffer free?

The Free plan holds up to 10 scheduled posts per connected channel at any one time, so 30 in total across three channels. Published posts free up their slot, so you can keep adding as older posts go out. Paid plans raise the cap a long way; Buffer's help article on scheduling limits gives the current numbers.

How do I schedule LinkedIn posts with Buffer?

Connect your LinkedIn profile or company page in Buffer and authorise it on LinkedIn's sign-in screen. Write the post in the composer, add an image or video, then add it to the queue or pick a custom date and time. Buffer's blog has a step-by-step LinkedIn scheduling guide.

Is Buffer safe?

Buffer connects to each network through that network's own login and authorisation screen, so it does not ask for your social passwords. Its legal page links to the privacy policy and terms, and status.buffer.com reports incidents publicly. Turn on two-step login for your Buffer account as well.

Buffer vs Later: which is better?

Later suits Instagram and TikTok brands that plan by the look of the feed, thanks to its visual grid planning and media library. Buffer is better for spreading posts evenly across LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky and Instagram, and it lets you start free. Pick by the networks that bring you business, and compare current prices on both pricing pages.

Can I pay for Buffer in India?

Yes. Buffer takes card payments, so an Indian card enabled for international transactions generally works; its help centre lists accepted payment methods. We found no rupee price, and banks usually add a forex markup, so a yearly plan often costs less in rupees than paying monthly.

What are the best free Buffer alternatives?

Zoho Social has a Free Edition, and Postiz is an open-source scheduler you can self-host without a licence fee. Meta Business Suite is a free option if you only post to Facebook and Instagram. Check each tool's free limits, as they differ from Buffer's three-channel setup.

Why did Buffer fail to post to Instagram?

Direct publishing needs an Instagram Business or Creator account; otherwise Buffer can only send a phone reminder for you to post manually. Other common causes are an expired Meta connection after a password change and media that breaks Instagram's size, ratio or length rules. Reconnecting the channel fixes most connection errors, and Buffer's Instagram error library explains specific messages.

Who is Buffer best for?

Buffer fits creators, freelancers, small businesses and small agencies that want a clean posting queue across several networks without a large bill. Larger teams that need social listening, ads management or complex approvals are better served by Hootsuite or Sprout Social.
