Our verdict

4.3out of 5

Figma is the default choice for teams designing apps and websites, and Professional is the right plan for most Indian startups and agencies. Move to Organization only when several teams need shared libraries and SSO. Budget for USD billing and watch AI credit use.

What is Figma?

Figma is a browser-first interface design tool where a whole product team can draw screens, build prototypes, review work and hand designs to developers in one shared file. If you are comparing Figma pricing professional vs organization, the short answer is this: Professional at $16 per Full seat (annual) covers most startups and agencies, while Organization at $55 per Full seat only makes sense once you run several teams that need a shared design system, single sign-on and admin controls.

Dylan Field and Evan Wallace started Figma, Inc. in 2012, and the company has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2025. Its careers page lists offices in San Francisco, New York, London, Tokyo and Bengaluru among others. Over the last two years it has grown from one editor into a family of products: Figma Design, FigJam whiteboards, Dev Mode, Figma Slides, Figma Make (prompt-to-app), Sites, Buzz, Draw and Motion. What you can use now depends on two things, your plan and your seat type, which is where most buyers get confused.

Who Figma is for

The core audience is UI and UX designers building apps and websites. Product managers use FigJam for workshops, developers use Dev Mode to read specs, and marketers increasingly use Buzz and Slides for on-brand assets and decks. In India, that maps neatly onto SaaS startups in Bengaluru or Pune, design agencies serving overseas clients, and freelancers who need a tool that clients already know.

It is a poor fit for print-heavy work, photo retouching or anyone who wants ready-made social templates and nothing else. Those users are better served by Canva or Adobe's photo tools.

Key features in practice

  • Auto layout: frames that resize around their content, so a button grows when the label gets longer and a card list reflows when you add an item.
  • Figma components and variants: build a button once, reuse it everywhere, and push one change to every file through a team library.
  • Figma variables: store colours, spacing and copy as tokens, switch light and dark modes, and drive prototype logic.
  • Figma prototyping: link frames, add smart animate transitions, and share a clickable link that clients can open on a phone.
  • Dev Mode: a developer view with measurements, CSS, iOS and Android snippets, and ready-for-dev status on sections.
  • FigJam and Figma Slides: whiteboarding and presentations that sit inside the same workspace and share the same libraries.
  • Figma Make: describe an app or flow in plain language and get a working prototype with real code, paid for with AI credits.
  • Figma plugins and the Figma Community: thousands of free UI kits, icon sets and plugins for tasks like content filling, accessibility checks and exporting assets.

The real strength is multiplayer editing. Five people can work in one file at once, comment on specific layers and see each other's cursors, with nothing to install.

How seats work before you look at prices

Since March 2025, Figma bills per seat type rather than per "editor". According to Figma's help centre, a Full seat gets editing in Figma Design plus Dev Mode, FigJam and Slides, and on paid plans it also covers publishing with Sites. A Dev seat covers Dev Mode, FigJam and Slides, with view and comment access to design files. A Collab seat covers FigJam and Slides only. View seats are free on every plan.

This matters for budgets. A team of three designers, four developers and six PMs does not need thirteen Full seats. It needs three Full, four Dev and six Collab seats. The cheaper seats are cheaper for a reason, though: a Dev seat cannot edit design files, and a Collab seat only works in FigJam and Slides. Anyone who actually draws screens needs the $16 Full seat, which is why this review treats it as Figma's real starting price for a designer.

Figma pricing professional vs organization, plus Enterprise

Prices below are per seat per month in US dollars as shown on Figma's Professional and Organization plan pages (checked 17 October 2026), billed annually. Organization and Enterprise are sold on annual billing only. AI credit figures come from Figma's help centre.

PlanFull seatDev seatCollab seatAI credits per Full seat/month
StarterFreeNot offeredFree500
Professional$16$12$33,000
Organization$55$25$53,500
Enterprise$90$35$54,250

Professional can also be paid monthly, which costs more. Figma's plan page does not show the monthly dollar rate, but its seat-pricing help article lists a Full seat at €20 monthly against €16 annually, a Dev seat at €15 against €12, and a Collab seat at €5 against €3. Expect a similar premium of about 25% on a dollar invoice, and confirm the exact figure at checkout. Seats you add in the middle of an annual term are billed separately and prorated.

What does the jump from $16 to $55 buy? Organization adds unlimited teams, shared libraries and fonts across the company, centralised admin tools and billing, and the security controls larger firms ask for, such as single sign-on. A ten-designer agency on one team rarely needs that; a company with separate app, web and marketing teams usually does.

AI credits and what they cost

All Figma AI features, including Figma Make, image generation, background removal and the design agent, draw from a monthly credit allowance. Full seats get 3,000 credits on Professional, 3,500 on Organization and 4,250 on Enterprise. Every other seat gets 500. Credits reset each month and cannot be pooled or carried forward.

Figma's help page gives rough costs: a simple Make edit can use around 30 credits, while generating a five-screen checkout flow can pass 300. Since March 2026, admins can buy more through a monthly subscription (5,000 credits for $120) or pay-as-you-go (5,000 credits for $150), according to Figma's blog post on AI credits. Some actions, such as renaming layers and AI search, use no credits at all.

Figma free plan limits

Yes, Figma is free to start. The Starter plan gives you unlimited personal drafts, though you can only invite others to a draft with view access. Shared team work is where the cap bites: Starter allows 3 Figma Design or Sites files (each limited to 3 pages), 3 FigJam files and 3 Slides files, plus 30 days of version history. There are no team libraries and no Dev Mode. AI use is capped at 500 credits a month with a daily limit of 150, and Figma's AI image tools are not included.

Starter is fine for learning, a portfolio or a single small client project. Once you need shared team libraries, unlimited files or developer handoff, you will move to Professional.

Figma price in India

Figma does not bill in rupees. Its help centre lists five billing currencies: US dollars, British pounds, euros, Canadian dollars and Japanese yen. Indian teams therefore pay in USD on an international card, and the final rupee amount depends on the exchange rate, your bank's forex markup and tax, which Figma calculates from your billing address.

In practice, a three-person design team on annual Professional pays $48 a month for Full seats before tax. Adding two developers on Dev seats takes that to $72. There is no India discount, and Figma's FAQ states it does not offer nonprofit discounts either.

The best deal in India is for learners. Figma's education plan gives eligible students and educators Professional-level features free, for two years for school and university users and six months for bootcamps.

Figma vs Adobe XD

Adobe's own support page states that XD is in maintenance mode. For a new team in 2026 that settles the question. Existing users can keep opening their files, but nobody should start a design system there now. Figma is the usual destination for teams leaving XD.

Figma vs Sketch

Sketch is the closest like-for-like rival. According to Sketch's pricing page, Standard costs $12 per editor a month billed yearly, Professional is $24 and Enterprise is $44. Sketch also sells a one-time Mac-only licence for $120 per seat, which includes a year of updates. The editor itself is a native Mac app. Sketch suits Mac-only studios that prefer offline work. Figma wins for mixed Windows and Mac teams, real-time co-editing, and its AI and developer tools.

Figma vs Canva and free alternatives

Canva and Figma answer different needs. Canva is built for quick marketing graphics, with Pro at ₹4,000 a year for one person, while Figma is for designing product interfaces with components, auto layout and handoff.

For a free alternative, Penpot is the strongest option. It is open source, can be self-hosted, and its cloud Professional plan costs nothing, with a paid Unlimited plan at $7 per editor a month capped at $175. It has far less built-in AI and a much smaller community library than Figma.

Privacy, data and commercial use

Figma's help centre says content training is switched on by default for Starter and Professional teams, and admins can turn it off in team settings. On Organization and Enterprise it is off and cannot be enabled at present. Figma says it does not allow third-party model providers to train on customer data, and it does not train on Education or Government accounts. Read the licence on any Community file before shipping it, since creators set their own terms.

Exporting from Figma to code

There are three routes. Dev Mode shows CSS and platform snippets and lets developers export assets in PNG, SVG or PDF. Figma Make generates working code from a prompt or an existing design. For engineering teams, the REST API (personal access tokens or OAuth 2.0, with webhooks) and the MCP server pass design context into coding tools such as Cursor or Claude Code.

Limitations

  • No INR billing, so costs move with the dollar.
  • Seat types and AI credits make the final bill harder to predict than a single per-user price.
  • Large files with many variants can get slow in the browser on older laptops.
  • The iOS and Android apps are for viewing, prototypes and FigJam; Figma's help centre says you cannot edit Figma Design files or Slides decks on mobile.
  • Content training is on by default for smaller plans, which some agencies will want to switch off for client work.

How to get started

Sign up free with an email or Google account and start in drafts. Open a Community UI kit to study how components and auto layout are built (Shift+A applies auto layout). Build one real screen, share a prototype link with a colleague, and invite a developer as a viewer to check what Dev Mode needs. If you hit the three-file limit within a month, move the team to Professional on annual billing and assign Full seats only to people who actually design.

Figma FAQ

Is Figma free?

Yes. The Starter plan is free and includes unlimited drafts, 3 shared Figma Design files with 3 pages each, 30-day version history and 500 AI credits a month. Students and educators can apply for the free education plan, which gives Professional features at no cost.

How much does Figma cost per month?

A designer needs a Full seat, which costs $16 per month on Professional billed annually. Dev seats ($12) and Collab seats ($3) are cheaper but cannot edit design files. Organization Full seats are $55 and Enterprise Full seats $90 per month, both billed annually, and monthly billing on Professional costs about 25% more.

What are Figma free plan limits?

Starter limits shared team work to 3 Figma Design files, each capped at 3 pages, plus 3 FigJam and 3 Slides files, with 30 days of version history. Dev Mode and team libraries are not included. AI use is capped at 500 credits per month and 150 per day, while drafts are unlimited and can be shared with view access.

How do I use auto layout in Figma?

Select a frame or a group of layers and press Shift+A, or click the auto layout option in the right panel. Set direction, spacing and padding, and choose whether the frame hugs its content or fills its container. Child items then reflow automatically when you add or resize them.

Is Figma good for UI/UX design?

Yes, it is the most widely used tool for interface design. Components, variables, auto layout, prototyping and Dev Mode cover the full path from wireframe to developer handoff. Real-time co-editing in the browser makes it practical for distributed teams.

Figma vs Sketch: which is better?

Sketch is a native Mac app starting at $12 per editor per month billed yearly, with a $120 one-time Mac-only licence option. Figma runs in the browser and on Windows and Mac desktop apps, with stronger live collaboration and AI tools. Sketch makes sense mainly for Mac-only teams that prefer a native app.

Figma vs Canva: which should I use?

Use Canva for fast marketing graphics, social posts and simple documents from templates. Use Figma for designing app and website interfaces with components and developer handoff. Many teams pay for both because they solve different problems.

Figma vs Adobe XD: is XD still an option?

Adobe's support site states that XD is in maintenance mode, so it is not a sensible choice for a new team. Existing users can still open their files, but the product is not being actively developed. Figma is the usual migration path.

What are the best free Figma alternatives?

Penpot is the strongest free alternative: it is open source, self-hostable and its cloud Professional plan costs nothing. Figma's own Starter plan is also free for small projects. Penpot has much less built-in AI and a smaller community library.

How do I export from Figma to code?

Dev Mode provides CSS, iOS and Android code snippets plus asset exports in PNG, SVG and PDF. Figma Make can generate working code from a prompt or a design, using AI credits. Developers can also pull design data through the REST API or the Figma MCP server into coding tools.
