Our verdict

4.0out of 5

Illustrator is still the safest pick for professional logo, packaging and brand work, especially if you exchange files with agencies. The single-app plan is fairly priced in India, but read the cancellation terms first. Casual users should try Inkscape or Affinity before paying.

How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.

What is Adobe Illustrator?

Adobe Illustrator is the vector drawing app that most branding studios, print shops and packaging teams in India still treat as the default. Before paying for it, most buyers want to understand the Illustrator vs Photoshop difference, what the single-app plan costs in rupees, and whether a free tool such as Inkscape or Affinity can do the same job. This review answers those questions using Adobe's India pricing page, its help documentation and the official sites of the competing apps.

What Adobe Illustrator is used for

Illustrator builds artwork out of mathematical paths instead of pixels. That makes it the usual choice for logos, icons, brand identities, infographics, packaging dielines, signage, T-shirt prints and editorial illustrations. A logo drawn here can be printed on a visiting card or a 20-foot hoarding without losing sharpness, because vector graphics are recalculated at every size.

It suits freelance designers, agency art directors, in-house brand teams and print vendors. Founders who only need social posts once a week will usually find it heavier than they need. Adobe, the company John Warnock and Charles Geschke founded in 1982, develops it, and the current desktop release line is Illustrator 2026 (version 30). Adobe's July 2026 security bulletin lists 30.6 as the patched build.

Illustrator vs Photoshop difference: vector vs raster

Photoshop edits raster images, which are grids of coloured pixels. Photos, digital paintings, retouching and compositing belong there. Enlarge a raster file too far and edges turn soft or blocky, because there are only so many pixels to stretch.

Illustrator stores shapes as anchor points and curves. Scaling is lossless, colours can be swapped across a whole file in seconds, and the output stays crisp for screen printing, laser cutting or embroidery. The trade-off: realistic photo editing is not what it is built for.

In practice, many designers use both. A typical workflow is to retouch a product photo in Photoshop, then place it inside an Illustrator layout for a label or brochure. On price, the two single-app plans sit at the same regular figure in India, ₹733.96 a month (annual plan billed monthly, GST included), so cost should not decide the choice. Pick based on whether your work is mostly shapes and type, or mostly photos.

One wrinkle for photographers: Adobe's Photography plan bundles Photoshop, Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and 1TB of storage at a regular ₹638.38 a month, cheaper than Photoshop alone. Illustrator has no such bundle, so vector-first designers either pay for the single app or move up to Creative Cloud Pro.

Key features in practice

  • Pen tool: the core drawing tool for precise Bezier curves. It takes practice, but it is the reason clean logos come out of this app.
  • Pathfinder: combines, subtracts and splits overlapping shapes, which is how most icon sets and monograms are built.
  • Artboards: one file can hold a visiting card, letterhead and social profile picture side by side, each exported separately.
  • Image Trace: turns a scanned sketch or bitmap logo into editable paths.
  • Gradient mesh: lets you paint smooth colour blends across a shape for realistic shading.
  • Type on a path: sets text along a curve or circle, handy for badges and seals.
  • SVG export: produces web-ready icons and illustrations that developers can drop straight into a site.

Adobe has also added Firefly-based tools. Generative Recolor changes the colour scheme of finished artwork from a text prompt, which is useful when a client asks for five palette options by evening. Adobe's product page also describes turning a text prompt into editable vector art, Generative Shape Fill, Generative Expand for bleeds and resizing, Concept to Vector for cleaning up rough sketches, and Turntable for viewing a flat drawing from different angles. These features draw on generative credits, covered below.

Illustrator on iPad is part of every plan that includes Illustrator, according to Adobe. It supports Apple Pencil drawing with editable Bezier curves, imports layered PSD files and can vectorise a photo of a sketch. Adobe's product page mentions browser access only on the team plans, so check the plan card if you need Illustrator on the web.

Adobe Illustrator price in India

Adobe's India plans page lists all individual prices including GST, on an annual commitment billed monthly. Adobe sometimes discounts the first year for new subscribers, so the figure at checkout can be lower than the regular rate shown here.

PlanRegular price (India)What you get
Illustrator single app₹733.96/mo incl. GSTIllustrator on desktop and iPad, 100GB storage, 25 generative credits a month
Creative Cloud Standard₹2,132.26/mo incl. GSTCheaper multi-app tier with core apps such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro
Creative Cloud Pro₹2,714.00/mo incl. GSTIllustrator plus 20+ apps including Photoshop, 100GB storage, 4,000 generative credits a month
Creative Cloud Pro (students and teachers)₹398.99/mo first year, then ₹699.01/mo incl. GSTIntroductory price for new subscribers who qualify
Illustrator for teams₹3,352.00/mo per licence, excl. GST1TB storage, 25 credits a month, business admin tools

The maths is simple. If you need Illustrator plus Photoshop, two single apps cost about ₹1,468 a month, so Creative Cloud Pro starts to make sense once you add a third app or need heavy AI usage. Students get the best deal by far: the full Pro bundle for under ₹400 a month in year one.

Free trial, generative credits and cancellation rules

Illustrator is not free to download for permanent use. Individuals get a 7-day free trial, and business plans get 14 days. After that, you need a paid plan.

Generative credits reset monthly. The single-app plan gives 25, which is enough to test Generative Recolor and a few vector prompts but not for daily AI work. Creative Cloud Pro gives 4,000.

Read the cancellation terms before you subscribe. Adobe's subscription terms say you get a full refund if you cancel within 14 days. After that, cancelling an annual plan billed monthly triggers a lump-sum charge of 50% of your remaining contract obligation. Annual prepaid payments become non-refundable after 14 days, though service continues until the term ends. For freelancers with irregular income, this is the clause that catches people out.

A plain month-to-month plan avoids that charge, but Adobe's India Illustrator page currently shows only the annual, billed-monthly price, so confirm the options at checkout.

How to use Image Trace to convert an image to vector

Adobe's documented steps are short. Place the raster image in your document and select it. Then choose Object, Image Trace, Make for default settings, or open Window, Image Trace to pick a preset such as a black-and-white logo or a high-fidelity photo. Adjust threshold, paths and colours in the panel until the preview looks clean. Finally choose Object, Image Trace, Expand to convert the result into editable paths.

Expect to tidy up. A low-resolution JPEG from WhatsApp will produce wobbly edges, so redraw key curves with the Pen tool for anything a client will print large.

Illustrator vs CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 is the closest paid rival and remains popular with Indian print and signage businesses. Its official page lists Windows, Mac and a browser-based CorelDRAW Web, a 15-day trial without a credit card, and three ways to pay: monthly subscription, annual subscription or a one-time purchase. Subscriptions include 2,000 AI credits a month, while the perpetual licence comes with a one-off batch of 2,000 that does not renew. Corel's product page does not display rupee or dollar prices up front, so compare the quote at checkout.

The one-time licence is the main draw for shops that dislike subscriptions. Illustrator has the edge in agency hand-offs, since most brand guidelines, stock templates and client files arrive as AI or PDF from Adobe users. Choose CorelDRAW for print production on your own terms. Choose Illustrator if you collaborate with agencies or international clients.

Illustrator vs Inkscape

Inkscape is a free and open source vector editor for Linux, Windows and macOS. SVG is its native format, which makes it a sensible pick for web icons and plotter or laser-cutter files. Version 1.4, released in October 2024, is the latest major release listed on inkscape.org.

The gap is mostly in what surrounds the drawing tools. Inkscape has no Firefly-style generative features, no bundled fonts or stock library, and no paid support desk. Many agency clients still expect native Adobe files. For a student, NGO or bootstrapped startup making simple logos and icons, though, it does the job at zero cost.

Illustrator free alternatives: Affinity

Affinity is now owned by Canva, and its official site says it is free for individuals. The single app combines vector design, pixel editing and page layout in one .af file, runs on Windows and macOS, and can import AI, PSD and IDML files with layers kept. An iPad version is still in development. Its AI features are optional and need a Canva premium plan.

For many freelancers, Affinity is the strongest reason to question an Adobe subscription. The gaps are mostly about ecosystem: Adobe's bundled fonts, Express Premium, cloud libraries and the fact that many clients still send and expect Adobe files.

Privacy, AI training and commercial use

Adobe states that it has never trained Firefly on customer content, and that customer content in its apps is not used to train generative AI models. Adobe also says Firefly is designed to be commercially safe and that you own what you create. Enterprise customers can get IP indemnity for Firefly output. Some newer Illustrator tools such as Generative Shape Fill can use partner models, so check which model a feature uses if your client has strict AI rules.

Limitations

  • No perpetual licence, and the 50% early-cancellation charge on annual monthly plans.
  • Only 25 monthly generative credits on the single-app plan.
  • Steep learning curve for the Pen tool and print settings.
  • Photo editing still needs Photoshop or another raster app.

How to get started

Start the 7-day trial from Adobe's India plans page and install through the Creative Cloud desktop app. In week one, redraw an existing logo with the Pen tool and Pathfinder, set up three artboards for card, letterhead and social avatar, and test SVG export for your website. If you only need occasional vector work, try Inkscape or Affinity first. If you work with agencies or need Adobe's AI tools, the single-app plan is the sensible entry point, and students should go straight to the discounted Creative Cloud Pro offer.

Adobe Illustrator FAQ

What is Adobe Illustrator used for?

Illustrator is used to create vector artwork such as logos, icons, brand identities, infographics, packaging and print designs. Because it works with paths rather than pixels, the artwork scales to any size without losing quality.

How much is Adobe Illustrator in India?

Adobe's India plans page lists the Illustrator single-app plan at a regular ₹733.96 a month including GST, on an annual plan billed monthly. Creative Cloud Pro, which includes Illustrator and 20+ other apps, is ₹2,714 a month regular. New subscribers are sometimes offered a lower first-year price.

Is Illustrator free to download?

No. You can download it with a 7-day free trial for individuals (14 days on business plans), but continued use needs a paid subscription. Free vector alternatives include Inkscape and Affinity.

How do I use Image Trace in Illustrator?

Select a placed raster image and choose Object > Image Trace > Make, or open Window > Image Trace and pick a preset. Adjust the settings in the panel until the preview looks right, then choose Object > Image Trace > Expand to get editable paths.

Is Illustrator good for logo design?

Yes. Logos are one of its main uses because vector artwork stays sharp at every size, from a visiting card to a billboard. The Pen tool, Pathfinder and artboards make it easy to build a mark and export every variation from one file.

What is the difference between Illustrator and Photoshop?

Illustrator works with vector paths, so it suits logos, icons and print artwork that must scale cleanly. Photoshop works with raster pixels, so it suits photo editing, retouching and digital painting. Both single-app plans cost the same regular ₹733.96 a month in India.

Illustrator vs CorelDRAW: which is better?

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 offers subscription or one-time purchase options and runs on Windows, Mac and web, which appeals to print shops. Illustrator is subscription only but is the format most agencies and brand teams exchange. Choose based on whether file compatibility or owning a licence matters more.

Illustrator vs Affinity Designer: which should I choose?

Affinity Designer has been folded into a single Affinity app by Canva, which is free for individuals on Windows and macOS. It handles vector, pixel and layout work and imports AI files. Illustrator remains the safer choice if clients expect native Adobe files or you need Adobe's AI tools.

What are the best free Illustrator alternatives?

Inkscape is free, open source and uses SVG as its native format on Windows, macOS and Linux. Affinity, now owned by Canva, is free for individuals and covers vector, photo and layout work. Both are capable for logos and icons.

How do I convert an image to vector in Illustrator?

Place the image, select it and apply Image Trace with a suitable preset, such as a black-and-white logo preset for simple marks. Then expand the trace to paths and clean up rough curves with the Pen tool. Low-resolution images usually need some manual redrawing.
