Our verdict
Clarity is the easiest recommendation in behaviour analytics: it costs nothing, installs in minutes and shows exactly where visitors get stuck. Its limits are 30-day replays, a daily recording cap on very busy sites and no surveys, so larger product teams may add Contentsquare (formerly Hotjar) or PostHog on top.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Microsoft Clarity?
Microsoft still charges nothing for Clarity, and there is no upgrade button anywhere in the dashboard. That single fact shapes this microsoft clarity heatmaps and session recordings review: the question for an Indian D2C store, SaaS founder or agency is not whether you can afford it, but whether the free tool records enough, keeps data long enough and fits your consent setup. For many small and mid-size sites the answer is yes. For product teams that need surveys, long-term replay archives or raw data exports, it is a starting point rather than the whole stack.
Is Microsoft Clarity really free, and what is the catch?
Clarity's FAQ on Microsoft Learn calls it a free service forever, says you never hit traffic limits or get pushed to a paid version, and confirms that sign-up needs no credit card. There is no trial clock. In rupee terms the software line in your budget is ₹0, whether you run one blog or forty client properties from an agency login.
The trade-offs sit elsewhere. The FAQ describes Clarity as a data controller under GDPR, so read the Clarity terms alongside your own privacy policy. You get no SLA and no account manager. And because everything is free, Microsoft decides how many recordings to keep, for how long and which features to add or retire. Those rules are the real "price", so they deserve a closer look.
How many recordings Clarity keeps, and for how long
There is no traffic cap, and the FAQ says Clarity tracks all sessions. Replays are a different matter. Clarity records up to 100,000 sessions per project per day, and Microsoft notes that recordings might not be available for every session. Each heatmap is built from up to 100,000 page views. A mid-size Indian news site doing two lakh sessions a day will therefore find gaps in its replays, while dashboards stay useful for trends.
Retention is split. Recordings are kept for 30 days from the time they were captured. Favourited recordings, plus a random sample Microsoft picks, stay for up to 9 months, and heatmaps can be viewed for up to 9 months too. Star the recordings that explain a bug or drop-off the same week you find them, or they disappear. Clarity does not let you download individual recordings.
What one session replay actually tells you
A replay rebuilds the visitor's screen from page changes rather than recording a video file, so you see the page as they saw it: where they tapped, how far they scrolled and when they left. Each recording comes with a timeline of clicks and page changes, plus device, browser and country details.
The value comes from clarity filters. You can narrow recordings to visitors from Google Ads on mobile who reached the checkout URL, or to sessions that hit a JavaScript error on a single product page. Saved segments make that repeatable for a weekly review. Without filters you will drown in thousands of identical scroll-and-leave visits.
Reading heatmaps without drawing the wrong conclusions
Clarity gives click, scroll and area heatmaps for any page URL, split by desktop, tablet and mobile. Click maps show where taps land, including on elements that are not links. Scroll maps show the share of visitors who reached each fold, which is often the quickest argument for moving a pricing block or a "Buy now" button higher on long Indian landing pages.
Two cautions. First, heatmaps on dynamic pages (carousels, sticky headers, lazy-loaded lists) can misplace clicks if the layout shifts. Second, low-traffic pages produce noisy maps; wait for a few hundred views before redesigning anything on the strength of one heatmap.
Microsoft Clarity rage clicks and dead clicks: signals to check first
The dashboard flags behaviour that usually means frustration. Rage clicks are rapid repeated clicks in one spot, often on a button that looks active but does nothing. Dead clicks are clicks that produce no visible change. Excessive scrolling marks visitors moving up and down a page faster than they could read it, which often points to missing information. Quick backs catch people who open a page and return almost at once.
Each metric opens the matching recordings, so a product manager can go from "8% of mobile sessions had dead clicks" to watching the exact tap on a non-clickable product image in under a minute. For many small teams these four numbers are the most useful part of the product.
Copilot in Clarity and smart events
Microsoft has added generative AI on top of the raw data. Clarity Copilot offers a chat panel for questions about your project, session insights that turn one replay into plain-language takeaways, grouped insights across many recordings, heatmap summaries for a page across all three device types, and ad campaign insights that tie campaign metrics to on-site behaviour. Microsoft brought session and grouped insights to mobile app projects in June 2024. You can switch Copilot off in settings. Microsoft itself warns that the summaries can be wrong, so treat them as a pointer to recordings worth watching rather than as a verdict.
Smart events detect common actions without extra code. Microsoft Learn lists nine automatic types, including Purchase, Add to Cart, Begin Checkout, Submit Form, Sign Up and Download. You can create your own events in code through the Clarity API, and the funnels feature shows where visitors drop between steps. That covers simple conversion checks, though it is not a replacement for proper event analytics.
Microsoft Clarity Google Analytics integration with GA4
The GA4 integration connects a Clarity project to one Google Analytics property using its account ID, property ID and measurement ID. Microsoft says the link lets Clarity pull data from Google Analytics and show it inside the Clarity dashboard. Two things it does not do, according to Microsoft's GA4 page: Clarity does not send playback URLs to GA4, and it does not support GA4 segments.
The pairing still makes sense because the tools answer different questions: GA4 counts what happened across channels and campaigns, while Clarity shows how it happened on screen. Keep the two consistent on consent. If GA4 runs only after consent, Clarity should follow the same rules, or the visitor counts will drift apart.
Microsoft Clarity vs Hotjar for a team watching costs
Hotjar now operates as Contentsquare, and new Hotjar accounts can no longer be created. Its tools sit on a Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise ladder: Free covers 200k sessions a month with one month of data, while Growth starts at $39 a month and rises with monthly session volume. Unlike Clarity, it includes surveys, a feedback widget and user interviews. Here is how the two line up on the points that usually decide it.
| Point | Microsoft Clarity | Hotjar (Contentsquare) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, no paid plan | Free plan, then Growth from $39/month; Pro and Enterprise on quote |
| Volume limit | Recordings for up to 100,000 sessions a day per project | 200k sessions a month on Free; data collection pauses at the cap |
| Data history | 30 days for replays, 9 months for favourites and heatmaps | 1 month on Free, 13 months on Growth |
| Surveys and on-page feedback | No | Yes, with monthly response caps |
| AI summaries | Copilot, included free | Sense AI on Growth and above |
| Native mobile app recording | SDKs for Android, iOS and cross-platform frameworks | Web-focused |
If you mainly need replays and heatmaps, Clarity wins on cost by a wide margin. If you want to ask visitors why they left, Contentsquare's surveys may justify the spend, and some teams run both.
Consent rules for EEA, UK and Swiss visitors since October 2025
From 31 October 2025, Clarity began enforcing consent signals for page visits from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. You pass separate analytics_storage and ad_storage values through the Clarity Consent API, a supported consent management platform or Google Consent Mode. Without analytics consent, Clarity places no cookies for those visitors and collects only cookieless data, so recordings, funnels and continuous visitor paths are limited. Without ad consent, it shares no data with Microsoft Ads. Microsoft says running Clarity without consent does not breach its terms; you simply get less out of it.
Is it GDPR compliant? Clarity gives you the controls: content masking, IP blocking for your own office traffic, and a consent API. Compliance still depends on your banner, privacy notice and on not sending personal data in custom tags. Masking runs in Balanced mode by default, which hides numbers and email addresses. Input boxes and dropdowns are masked in every mode, and Strict mode hides all page text if you handle health, finance or account data. One gap: Clarity does not mask content inside style sheets, so keep sensitive text out of CSS.
Does the Clarity tracking script slow your pages?
The tag loads asynchronously, so it does not block the page from rendering. Microsoft's FAQ says visitors should notice no change in speed. Recordings are uploaded to Microsoft's servers, so your own hosting stores nothing extra. On very heavy pages, the bigger risk is stacking many third-party tags together, so check Core Web Vitals after adding it.
Installing Clarity on WordPress, Shopify and mobile apps
Create a project at clarity.microsoft.com, then pick an install method. WordPress sites can use the official Microsoft Clarity plugin, which adds the tag without editing theme files. Shopify stores connect through the Clarity app using store credentials, and any site can paste the snippet into the head tag.
For apps, Microsoft publishes Clarity SDKs for native Android and iOS, plus React Native and Flutter, so a Bengaluru fintech can see where users stall in KYC screens. A Cordova and Ionic plugin exists too, but it supports Android only. Microsoft says a new tag shows up in your project within 30 minutes to 2 hours, and uploaded app recordings can take up to 2 hours.
If recordings still do not appear, check four things: the tag is on the live domain rather than just staging, an ad blocker is not stripping it in your own test browser, your consent banner is passing the signal, and your IP is not in the blocked list.
Gaps that push teams to Hotjar, PostHog or FullStory
- No surveys or interviews: Hotjar, now Contentsquare, covers the "why" with feedback widgets.
- 30-day replay window: teams that audit flows quarterly must favourite recordings or move to a paid tool.
- Recording cap at high volume: large ecommerce sites lose the guarantee of seeing every checkout failure.
- Limited data export: the Data Export API returns aggregated dashboard metrics for the last one to three days, with 10 requests per project per day, not raw sessions. PostHog suits engineering-led teams wanting replay and product analytics in one place, and FullStory is a paid option aimed at larger companies.
- Support: help comes mainly from documentation, not a dedicated team.
Microsoft Clarity heatmaps and session recordings review: who should install it this week
Founders running a Shopify or WordPress store, marketers testing landing pages, agencies auditing client sites and app teams chasing drop-offs should all add Clarity, because the cost is nothing and the first useful insight often arrives within days. Pair it with GA4 for numbers, set up consent before EEA traffic arrives, and favourite the replays you need to keep. Teams that must retain every session or survey visitors will add a paid tool on top, but even they tend to keep Clarity running.

Microsoft Clarity FAQ
What is Microsoft Clarity?
It is a free behaviour analytics tool from Microsoft for websites and mobile apps. It records session replays, builds click, scroll and area heatmaps, and flags frustration signals such as rage clicks and dead clicks. It also includes Copilot AI summaries and a GA4 integration.
Is Microsoft Clarity free forever?
Microsoft's own FAQ calls Clarity a free service forever, with no paid version to upgrade to and no credit card needed at sign-up. Microsoft can still change its rules on recording limits and retention, so check the FAQ now and then.
Are there traffic limits on Microsoft Clarity?
Microsoft says there are no traffic limits. Clarity tracks all sessions, but it records replays for up to 100,000 sessions per project per day, so not every visit will have a recording on busy sites. Each heatmap is built from up to 100,000 page views.
How do I install Microsoft Clarity on WordPress?
Create a project at clarity.microsoft.com, then install the official Microsoft Clarity plugin from the WordPress plugin directory and connect it to that project. You can also paste the tracking code into your theme's head section. Microsoft says a new tag shows up in the project within 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Is Microsoft Clarity GDPR compliant and safe?
Clarity provides content masking (Balanced by default, Strict available), IP blocking and a Consent API. Since 31 October 2025 it enforces consent signals for visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland, and without consent it sets no cookies for them. Whether your setup is compliant depends on your consent banner, privacy notice and on not sending personal data in custom tags.
Microsoft Clarity vs Hotjar: which is better?
Clarity is better if you mainly need session replays, heatmaps and frustration metrics at no cost. Hotjar, which now operates as Contentsquare with Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise plans, is better if you also want surveys, feedback widgets and interviews and are willing to pay for Growth (from $39 a month) to get more history. Some teams run both.
Does Clarity slow down my website?
The Clarity tag loads asynchronously, so it does not block page rendering, and Microsoft says visitors should notice no change in speed. Check Core Web Vitals after adding it, especially if the page already carries many third-party tags.
What are the best Microsoft Clarity alternatives?
Hotjar, now sold as Contentsquare, is the closest alternative and adds surveys and feedback tools on a Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise ladder. PostHog suits developer-led teams that want replay with product analytics, while FullStory is a paid option aimed at larger companies.
Why are my Clarity recordings not showing?
Allow up to two hours after installing for data to appear. Then confirm the tag is on the live domain, that your consent banner is passing a consent signal, that an ad blocker is not stripping the script in your test browser, and that your own IP is not on the blocked list.
Who should use Microsoft Clarity?
Clarity suits founders, marketers, UX designers, agencies and app teams who want to see how real visitors use a site or app without paying for it. Teams that must keep every session for months or need visitor surveys will usually add a paid tool alongside it.
