Our verdict
Google Cloud is a strong pick for developers and data teams, and its $300, 90-day credit plus always-free allowances let you test real workloads at no cost. Indian users get rupee invoices with GST and two local regions, but should check card support and set budgets before upgrading.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Google Cloud?
Google Cloud is Google's public cloud for hosting apps, storing data, running analytics and building AI products, and most people meet it through the Google Cloud free tier and 300 dollar credit offer. New customers get $300 to spend in 90 days, and a separate set of always-free monthly allowances that do not expire. This review explains what that free money covers, what it does not, how billing works for Indian accounts, and when it makes sense to start paying.
What Google Cloud is and who it suits
Compute Engine gives you virtual machines. A serverless container service handles apps without servers to manage. BigQuery is the serverless data warehouse that draws many analytics teams to the platform. Cloud Storage holds files and backups, Cloud SQL offers managed MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server, and GKE (Google Kubernetes Engine) runs Kubernetes clusters. On the AI side, Vertex AI is the long-standing name for Google's model platform, though the product page now brands it as the Gemini platform, with Gemini models, Model Garden (including Gemma and third-party models such as Anthropic's Claude) and an Agent Development Kit.
It suits developers and startups who want serverless hosting, data teams that live in SQL, and companies already using Google Workspace or Firebase. A solo blogger who only needs a WordPress site is a weaker fit, since a shared host or a basic VPS is easier to budget for.
Google Cloud free tier and 300 dollar credit explained
These are two separate offers, and people often confuse them.
The free trial. According to Google's free program docs, eligible new users get a $300 Welcome credit valid for 90 days. You qualify only if you have never been a paying customer of Google Cloud, Google Maps Platform or Firebase and have not taken the trial before. Signing up needs a valid card or another payment method, and Google may place a temporary authorisation hold of $0 to $1. Nothing is billed during the trial.
The trial has limits. While on a trial billing account you cannot attach GPUs to VMs, buy from Cloud Marketplace, request quota increases, create Windows Server VMs or create VMware Engine resources. The credit also cannot pay for the Gemini API in AI Studio or for partner generative AI models sold as managed APIs. Crypto mining is banned.
When 90 days pass or the credit runs out without an upgrade, billing is disabled and resources stop. You then get a 30-day grace period to upgrade and possibly recover data, after which trial resources are deleted for good. If you upgrade early, leftover credit stays usable until the original 90-day window closes.
The Free Tier. This applies to every eligible billing account, trial or paid, each month. Google says the limits have no end date but can change with 30 days' notice, and unused amounts do not roll over.
| Product | Always-free monthly allowance |
|---|---|
| Compute Engine | 1 e2-micro VM in us-west1, us-central1 or us-east1, 30 GB-months standard persistent disk, 1 GB outbound from North America |
| Cloud Storage | 5 GB-months regional storage in those three US regions, 5,000 Class A and 50,000 Class B operations, 100 GB outbound from North America |
| BigQuery | 1 TiB of queries and 10 GiB of storage |
| Cloud Run | 2 million requests, 180,000 vCPU-seconds, 360,000 GB-seconds of memory (request-based billing) |
| Cloud Run functions | 2 million invocations, 400,000 GB-seconds, 200,000 GHz-seconds |
| Firestore | 1 GiB storage, plus 50,000 reads, 20,000 writes and 20,000 deletes per day |
| GKE | Cluster fee for one Autopilot or zonal Standard cluster (compute is extra) |
Pub/Sub (10 GiB of messages a month), Cloud Build (2,500 build-minutes a month on e2-standard-2) and a few AI APIs such as Speech-to-Text V1 (60 minutes) also have free slices. A catch for Indian users: the free e2-micro and free storage live only in US regions, not Mumbai or Delhi, so latency from India will be higher.
The free page also lists a 30-day Cloud SQL trial with an 8 vCPU Enterprise Plus instance, 64 GB memory and 100 GB storage, plus a 90-day Spanner trial instance with 10 GB of storage. Startups can apply separately to the Google for Startups Cloud Program, which offers up to $200,000 in credits, or $350,000 for AI startups.
Google Cloud Compute Engine pricing
Beyond the free e2-micro, VMs are pay-as-you-go. The VM pricing page says vCPUs, GPUs and memory carry a 1-minute minimum and are then billed per second. Discounts are where real savings sit:
- Sustained use discounts: automatic, up to 30% for eligible resources that run a full month.
- Resource-based committed use discounts: up to 37% for one year and up to 55% for three years on most machine types.
- Flexible (spend-based) commitments: 28% off for one year, 46% for three, and E2 machines qualify.
- Spot VMs: up to 91% off on-demand, but they can be stopped at short notice and get no other discounts.
Rates differ by region and machine type, so price your exact setup in the Pricing Calculator. For Indian accounts, rupee prices appear on the SKUs list.
India billing, regions and payment methods
Customers with an Indian billing address are billed in rupees by Google Cloud India Private Limited, whatever region they use, per Google's India migration FAQ. Google collects your GSTIN where available so invoices carry the right GST, and without a tax ID it charges GST based on the state in your billing address. For data residency there are two Indian regions: asia-south1 in Mumbai and asia-south2 in Delhi.
Payments are where Indian users hit friction. The payment-methods doc lists Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, plus debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo, as long as the bank allows recurring charges without a fresh two-factor check. Prepaid cards are refused and RuPay is not listed. UPI works only for qualified organisations in India paying in INR, needs an Indian bank account, and usually asks for a prepayment of about ₹500 to ₹1,000 before it becomes available. Google also warns that, under RBI rules, banks may decline automatic card charges above ₹15,000, so larger bills may need a manual payment.
Google Cloud Run vs Cloud Functions
Cloud Functions has been folded into Cloud Run and is now called Cloud Run functions. In practice:
- Services take any container or source code, answer HTTP requests, scale to zero and suit full web apps and APIs. Jobs handle run-to-completion tasks, and worker pools handle always-on queue consumers.
- Cloud Run functions are single-purpose snippets triggered by events such as a Pub/Sub message or a new file in a bucket. Use them for glue code, webhooks and small automations.
To deploy, install the gcloud CLI, enable billing on a project and run gcloud run deploy with the --source flag from your app folder. If the folder has no Dockerfile, Google's buildpacks build the container. You pick a region such as asia-south1, and you get an HTTPS URL. With request-based billing you pay nothing while no requests arrive. The first request after idle can be slow because an instance has to start, which you can avoid by setting a minimum instance count (which costs money).
Google Cloud vs AWS and Azure free offers
All three big clouds give new users credit, but the shape differs:
| Offer | Google Cloud | AWS | Microsoft Azure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signup credit | $300 | $100 at signup, up to $100 more for exploring services | $200 |
| Credit window | 90 days | Free plan closes after 6 months or when credits run out | First 30 days |
| Always free | 20+ products with monthly limits | 30+ services with monthly limits | 65+ services, plus 12 months of popular services free |
Google gives the largest single credit and a free VM that never expires. AWS gives a longer six-month runway. Azure's page says its 12-month free services are not offered to people who sign up directly for pay-as-you-go in India. On the paid side, AWS has the widest service catalogue and Azure fits Microsoft-heavy companies. Google's edge is BigQuery, Cloud Run, GKE and its AI stack.
GCP vs Firebase
Firebase is not a rival. Firebase's docs say a Firebase project is a Google Cloud project with extra app-focused services such as Authentication, Hosting and Firestore SDKs. Both share IAM, billing and project IDs. Moving from the free Spark plan to the Blaze plan just means linking a Cloud Billing account. Mobile and web app makers usually start in Firebase and drop into the full console when they need VMs or BigQuery.
GCP certification cost in India
Google's certification pages list fees in US dollars plus applicable tax. Cloud Digital Leader costs $99, Associate Cloud Engineer $125 and Professional Cloud Architect $200. Renewal exams cost $60, $75 and $100. The first two certifications stay valid for three years, while the architect certification lasts two. Google does not publish a separate rupee fee on these pages, so an Indian candidate pays the dollar price converted by their bank.
Security, privacy and compliance
Google's compliance page lists ISO/IEC 27001, 27017 and 27018, SOC 1, 2 and 3, and PCI DSS, among many others. For India, it lists RBI, SEBI and IRDAI as regulations it offers guidance and mappings for, not certifications. How customer data is handled sits in the Cloud Data Processing Addendum rather than the general privacy notice. Security on any cloud is shared: Google secures the infrastructure, but open firewall rules or leaked service account keys are your problem.
How to stop surprise charges
- Set a budget in Cloud Billing. Default alerts fire at 50%, 90% and 100% of the amount, but an alerts-only budget does not cap spending.
- For eligible services, a spend cap budget pauses them until you lift the cap manually.
- For a hard stop elsewhere, Google documents a Pub/Sub budget notification that can disable billing on a project.
- Keep free VMs and buckets in us-west1, us-central1 or us-east1, and watch outbound traffic.
- Shut down test projects when you finish with them.
Limitations
The console is dense, and IAM roles take time to learn. A card is required even for the trial, RuPay is missing from the listed cards and UPI is limited to organisations. Free compute sits in US regions only, and the trial blocks GPUs and quota increases, which hurts anyone testing AI training. Billing alerts warn rather than stop, so a forgotten resource can still cost money after you upgrade.
How to get started
Sign up at cloud.google.com/free with a Google account and a Visa or Mastercard. Create a project, set a small budget with alerts, then try one service: deploy a small container in asia-south1, or load a CSV into BigQuery and run a query. Stay inside the free allowances while learning, and upgrade only when you need GPUs, Marketplace or higher quotas.

Google Cloud FAQ
What is Google Cloud Platform used for?
Google Cloud is used to host websites and APIs, run virtual machines and containers, store files and databases, analyse data with BigQuery and build AI apps on Gemini models. Startups use it for serverless hosting on Cloud Run, while larger firms use it for data warehousing and Kubernetes.
How much is the Google Cloud free trial credit?
New eligible customers get a $300 Welcome credit that must be used within 90 days. You qualify only if you have never paid for Google Cloud, Google Maps Platform or Firebase and have not used the trial before.
What is always free on Google Cloud?
The Free Tier covers 20+ products each month, including one e2-micro VM with 30 GB standard disk in three US regions, 5 GB-months of Cloud Storage, 1 TiB of BigQuery queries, 2 million Cloud Run requests and 1 GiB of Firestore. These limits have no end date but Google can change them with 30 days' notice.
How do I deploy an app on Cloud Run?
Install the gcloud CLI, enable billing on a project and run gcloud run deploy with the --source flag from your app folder. Without a Dockerfile, Google's buildpacks build the container; you choose a region such as asia-south1 (Mumbai), and Cloud Run returns an HTTPS URL.
Is Google Cloud secure?
Google Cloud holds ISO/IEC 27001, 27017 and 27018, SOC 1, 2 and 3 and PCI DSS certifications, and offers guidance for Indian rules such as RBI and SEBI. Security is shared, though, so your own IAM settings, firewall rules and keys decide how safe your workloads are.
How does Google Cloud compare with AWS and Azure?
For new users, Google Cloud gives $300 for 90 days, AWS gives $100 plus up to $100 more on a free plan lasting up to six months, and Azure gives $200 for 30 days. AWS has the broadest catalogue, Azure suits Microsoft shops, and Google is strongest in BigQuery, Kubernetes, Cloud Run and AI.
What is the difference between GCP and Firebase?
Firebase sits on top of Google Cloud: every Firebase project is a Google Cloud project with app-focused services added. They share billing, IAM and project IDs, and Firebase's Blaze plan is simply a project linked to a Cloud Billing account.
Does Google Cloud accept Indian cards or UPI?
Google lists Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, plus Visa or Mastercard debit cards; RuPay is not listed. UPI is available only to qualified organisations in India billed in INR, usually after a prepayment of about ₹500 to ₹1,000, and RBI rules may cause banks to decline automatic card charges above ₹15,000.
What are the best Google Cloud alternatives?
AWS and Microsoft Azure are the two direct alternatives with similar breadth. For simpler hosting, a VPS provider or a platform like Firebase Hosting may be easier, depending on how much control you need.
How do I stop Google Cloud billing charges?
Set a budget with alerts, use a spend cap budget on eligible services, or wire a Pub/Sub budget notification to disable billing on a project. For a full stop, shut down unused projects, because alerts-only budgets do not cap spending.
