Our verdict
GitHub is the default choice for most developers and small teams: the Free plan gives unlimited private repos, real CI minutes and cloud dev hours at no cost. Pick GitLab if you want an all-in-one DevOps suite, or Bitbucket if you live in Jira, and confirm GitHub's renewal price before moving a large team to Team or Enterprise.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is GitHub?
GitHub is where most of the world's code lives, and for a lot of teams it is also the CI server, the issue tracker and the package registry. If you are weighing github vs gitlab vs bitbucket for a new project or a growing team, the short answer is that GitHub has the biggest community and the most generous free plan, GitLab packs more DevOps features into one paid tier, and Bitbucket is cheapest per user if your company already runs on Jira. The rest of this review explains where those differences actually show up in your bill and your workflow.
What GitHub is and who it suits
GitHub is a git repository hosting service founded in 2008 and based in San Francisco. Microsoft bought it in 2018 for $7.5 billion, so yes, it is owned by Microsoft. People use it to store code, review changes through pull requests, track bugs in GitHub Issues, plan work on GitHub Projects boards, run builds and deployments, publish packages and host small static sites.
Git is the free, open-source version control tool that runs on your laptop. GitHub is a hosted service built around Git that adds a web interface, collaboration, automation and access control. You can use Git without GitHub, but not the other way round.
It suits solo developers, students, open-source maintainers, Indian startups shipping their first product and agencies juggling many client repos. Large companies with compliance needs move up to Enterprise. Teams that want everything, from planning to security scanning, inside one product at a single price sometimes prefer GitLab.
Key features in practice
- Repositories and pull requests: unlimited public and private repos on every plan, with code review, inline comments and merge controls.
- GitHub Actions: CI/CD and automation defined in YAML files inside the repo. A marketplace of community-built actions covers common build, test and deploy steps.
- GitHub Codespaces: a full VS Code environment in the browser, running on a cloud machine, so a new hire can start coding without setting up anything locally.
- Dependabot: scans dependencies and opens pull requests to patch vulnerable or outdated packages. It is included on the Free plan.
- Packages: a registry for npm, Docker containers and other formats, tied to repo permissions.
- GitHub Desktop and mobile: GitHub Desktop is a free Git client released under the MIT licence. It runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or later and macOS 12 or later. Linux has only a community fork. Mobile apps exist for Android and for iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later).
- GitHub Sponsors: lets the public fund open-source maintainers directly through their profiles.
- API: REST and GraphQL APIs for automating almost anything, authenticated with personal access tokens, GitHub App tokens (signed with a JWT) or OAuth tokens. Authenticated users get 5,000 REST requests an hour; unauthenticated calls are capped at 60 an hour.
GitHub pricing explained
All prices on the official pricing page are in US dollars. There is no rupee price, so Indian buyers pay in USD on a card, and the final amount depends on your bank's conversion rate and any foreign transaction fee. GitHub's docs let you add extra details to receipts, but we could not find official guidance on GST invoices for India, so check with your accountant before expensing it.
| Plan | Price | Actions minutes / month | Artifact and Packages storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 2,000 | 500 MB |
| Pro (personal) | $4/month | 3,000 | 2 GB |
| Team | $4 per user/month (first 12 months) | 3,000 | 2 GB |
| Enterprise | From $21 per user/month (first 12 months) | 50,000 | 50 GB |
One detail to watch. In October 2026 the pricing page labels the Team and Enterprise prices as applying "for the first 12 months" and does not say what renewal costs. Ask for a written renewal quote before you commit a large team. Enterprise also offers a 30-day free trial. Pro's $4 price comes from GitHub's plan FAQ, not the pricing page, so confirm it at checkout.
Add-ons are billed by usage. Codespaces starts at $0.18 an hour for compute on a 2-core machine and $0.07 per GB a month for storage. Git LFS costs $5 a month for a 50 GB data pack. Secret Protection, Code Security and Premium Support are sold separately, and the pricing page does not list their prices.
Is GitHub free for private repositories?
Yes. The Free plan includes unlimited private repositories with unlimited collaborators. What you lose on Free is mostly around governance: protected branches, required reviewers and code owners on private repos need Pro or Team, and support is community-only. For a two-person startup, Free is often enough for a long time.
GitHub Actions free minutes and storage
Usage on public repos is free when you use standard GitHub-hosted runners, and self-hosted runners cost nothing. For private repos, the monthly allowance is 2,000 minutes on Free, 3,000 on Pro and Team, and 50,000 on Enterprise Cloud. Artifact storage, which is shared with Packages, is 500 MB on Free, 2 GB on Pro and Team and 50 GB on Enterprise, plus a 10 GB cache per repository. The Actions billing page still shows 1 GB for Pro, but the Packages billing page says 2 GB.
Minutes run out faster than expected because rates vary by OS. Billing docs list Linux 2-core at $0.006 a minute, Windows at $0.010 and macOS at $0.062. An iOS team building on macOS runners will burn its budget roughly ten times faster than a Node.js team on Linux. Larger runners are always charged, even on public repos.
Codespaces free hours
Personal accounts get a monthly Codespaces quota. Free accounts receive 120 core hours and 15 GB of storage, which works out to 60 hours on a 2-core machine. Pro accounts get 180 core hours and 20 GB. Organisations get no free quota; an admin has to enable Codespaces and pay for usage, and the Free plan comes with a $0 spend limit so nobody gets a surprise bill.
GitHub Pages free hosting limits
GitHub Pages turns a repo into a static website, which is handy for documentation, portfolios and project landing pages. To host one, create a repo, push your HTML or a static-site generator project, then turn on Pages under the repo's Settings and choose a branch or an Actions workflow. You can also add a custom domain.
The limits are documented clearly. The source repo should stay under 1 GB, the published site cannot exceed 1 GB, deployments time out after 10 minutes, and there is a soft cap of 100 GB of bandwidth a month and 10 builds an hour. Free accounts can publish Pages only from public repos; Pro, Team and Enterprise can publish from private repos too. GitHub's terms say Pages is not meant for an online business, e-commerce site or commercial SaaS, and it should never collect passwords or card numbers.
GitHub Student Developer Pack
Students get GitHub Pro free while they study, the Copilot Student plan and a long list of partner offers (the pack page currently lists 58, from Microsoft Azure and JetBrains to MongoDB and DataCamp). Many partner offers are time-limited.
To apply, you must be at least 13, enrolled in a degree or diploma programme (school, college or homeschool) and have a personal GitHub account. Go to Settings, open Education benefits, start an application and upload proof such as a dated college ID, transcript or enrolment letter. If your college issues an academic email and earlier applicants used one, add and verify it first, because GitHub may reject applications without it. Indian students at colleges without official email domains can submit a letter on the institution's letterhead instead.
GitHub Copilot free tier
GitHub Copilot is the AI coding assistant built into GitHub and the major editors. The free tier gives up to 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests a month, which is enough to try it on real work. Paid Copilot plans start at $10 a month. Pricing, models and limits are covered in detail on our separate GitHub Copilot review page, so we keep it short here.
GitHub vs GitLab vs Bitbucket: price and fit
| Platform | Free plan | First paid tier | Higher tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub | Unlimited users, 2,000 CI minutes | Team: $4 per user/month (first 12 months) | Enterprise: from $21 per user/month (first 12 months) |
| GitLab | 5 users per private top-level group, 400 compute minutes, 10 GiB storage | Premium: $29 per user/month, billed annually, 10,000 minutes | Ultimate: custom pricing, 50,000 minutes |
| Bitbucket | Up to 5 users, 50 build minutes, 1 GB LFS | Standard: $3.65 per user/month | Premium: $8 per user/month |
So which is better? GitHub wins on community, third-party integrations and the free plan, since it does not cap private team size. GitLab is the better pick if you want planning, CI/CD and security scanning in one self-hostable product and can justify $29 a seat. Bitbucket makes sense for Atlassian shops, because its link with Jira and Confluence is tighter, and its per-user price is the lowest here. Other alternatives worth a look are Azure DevOps, Gitea or Forgejo for self-hosting, and Codeberg for open-source projects.
Security, privacy and commercial use
For most teams, GitHub is a safe place to store code. Private repos are visible only to people you invite, two-factor authentication is available on every account, and Dependabot flags vulnerable libraries. Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, an audit log API and SOC compliance reports. Mistakes usually come from users, not the platform: never commit API keys or .env files, and turn on branch protection once a project has more than one contributor. Keep in mind that the commercial-use restriction in GitHub's documentation is about Pages sites, not about storing a company's private code.
If GitHub feels down or will not load, check githubstatus.com first. It reports the state of Git operations, Actions, Pages, Codespaces, Copilot and other services, along with recent incidents. If everything is green there, the problem is more likely your network, DNS or a corporate proxy.
Limitations
- No INR pricing or local payment options such as UPI.
- Team and Enterprise list prices are labelled as first-year prices, with renewal costs not shown.
- macOS runners consume Actions budget quickly.
- Advanced security add-ons have no public price.
- Pages cannot host a commercial site.
How to get started
Sign up on github.com with an email address and turn on two-factor authentication straight away. Create your first private repo, clone it with Git or GitHub Desktop, and push your code. Add a simple workflow file under .github/workflows to run tests on each pull request, and enable Dependabot alerts in Settings. When a second developer joins, set up branch protection, and once you need required reviewers on private code, upgrade to Team. Students should apply for the education benefits before paying for anything.

GitHub FAQ
What is GitHub used for?
GitHub is used to host Git repositories, review code through pull requests, track work with Issues and Projects, and run CI/CD with GitHub Actions. Teams also use it to publish packages, host static sites on GitHub Pages and code in the browser with Codespaces.
Is GitHub free for private repositories?
Yes. The Free plan includes unlimited private repositories and unlimited collaborators, plus 2,000 Actions minutes a month. Features such as protected branches, required reviewers and code owners on private repos need Pro or Team.
Is GitHub owned by Microsoft?
Yes. Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion. GitHub was founded in 2008 and is based in San Francisco.
How do I host a website on GitHub Pages?
Push your static site (or a static-site generator project) to a repository, open the repo's Settings, go to Pages and pick a branch or an Actions workflow to publish from. Free accounts can publish only from public repos, and sites are limited to 1 GB with a soft 100 GB monthly bandwidth cap.
Is GitHub safe for storing code?
For most individuals and companies, yes. Private repos are visible only to invited people, two-factor authentication is available, and Dependabot flags vulnerable dependencies. The bigger risk is user error, such as committing API keys, so use branch protection and keep secrets out of the repo.
GitHub vs GitLab: which is better?
GitHub is better for community reach, integrations and a free plan with no private team-size cap. GitLab suits teams that want planning, CI/CD and security in one product and can pay $29 per user a month for Premium, billed annually. GitLab's free tier allows 5 users per private group and 400 compute minutes.
What is the difference between Git and GitHub?
Git is a free, open-source version control tool that runs locally on your computer. GitHub is a hosted service built around Git that adds a web interface, pull requests, issue tracking, automation and access control.
How do I get the GitHub Student Developer Pack?
You must be at least 13, enrolled in a degree or diploma programme and have a personal GitHub account. Open Education benefits in your GitHub settings, start an application and upload proof such as a dated student ID or enrolment letter, using your academic email if your school issues one.
What are the best GitHub alternatives?
GitLab is the closest all-in-one alternative, and Bitbucket (from $3.65 per user a month) is the natural fit for Jira users. For self-hosting, Gitea and Forgejo are lightweight options, while Codeberg is popular for open-source projects.
Why is GitHub down or not loading?
Check githubstatus.com, which shows the live status of Git operations, Actions, Pages, Codespaces, Copilot and other services, plus recent incidents. If every service is operational, the issue is usually on your side, such as your network, DNS, VPN or a corporate proxy.
