Our verdict
Amazon Associates is the default affiliate program for Indian content sites because it is free and Amazon.in converts well. Fees are modest in big categories like phones and the 24-hour session is short, so it rewards buying-intent content more than casual traffic. Pair it with Flipkart or a network like EarnKaro if your niche pays better elsewhere.
How this score works: the DevMixa score is research-based — we compare official pricing, features, documentation, support options, security and data policies, and public user feedback against other tools in the same category. It is not a hands-on test; tools we test ourselves are marked “Tested”.
What is Amazon Associates?
Amazon Associates is Amazon's own affiliate scheme, and the Indian version runs from affiliate-program.amazon.in. You place special links to Amazon.in products on your site, app or social channel, and Amazon pays an advertising fee when a visitor buys. This review covers amazon associates india commission rates by category, the approval process, payouts, tax, the API and the rules that trip up new publishers. Everything here comes from Amazon's own program pages, checked in October 2026.
What Amazon Associates is and who it suits
None of Amazon's India program pages mention a joining fee. Amazon describes the program as open to bloggers, publishers and content creators who have a qualifying website or mobile app, and it reviews every application before final approval. Creators who mostly work on Instagram or YouTube get pointed to a sibling scheme, the Amazon Influencer Program, which Amazon lists for people with an established social following.
It fits best if you write buying guides, product reviews, deal posts or niche content where readers already intend to shop. India's biggest store sits behind every link, so trust and checkout conversion are rarely the problem. The trade-off is that fees on many popular categories are small, and the rules are strict.
How amazon associates india commission rates by category work
Amazon publishes its rates in an official Advertising Fee Schedule, which forms part of the Operating Agreement. Fees are mostly a percentage of "Qualifying Revenues", meaning the sale value minus shipping, gift wrap, taxes and service charges, and further reduced by returns, rebates and bad debt. The program homepage advertises fees of up to 10% on qualifying purchases and programs, but the highest standard category rate in the current table is 8%.
The table below copies the figures from Amazon's fee schedule page, which labels them as valid for October to November 2026. We read it on 17 October 2026. Amazon revises these numbers often, so confirm them on the official Advertising Fee Schedule before you plan content around a category.
| Product category (as Amazon groups them) | Fixed advertising rate |
|---|---|
| Beauty, Luxury Beauty | 8% |
| Apparel & Accessories, Luggage & Bags, Watches | 7.5% |
| Jewelry, Shoes and Handbags | 7% |
| Automotive, Baby Products, Books, Personal Care Appliances, Sports & Fitness | 4.72% |
| Home, Home Improvement, Office Products | 4.25% |
| Furniture, Health, Household & Personal Care, Kitchen & Dining, Pet Supplies | 4% |
| Wireless Accessories | 3.4% |
| Musical Instruments | 3.2% |
| Business & Industrial Supplies | 2.98% |
| Electronics, Lawn & Garden, Video Games | 2.80% |
| Camera | 2.63% |
| Amazon Fresh, Grocery | 2.50% |
| Computers, Home Entertainment, Large Appliances | 2.45% |
| Mobile Phones (see note below) | 1% |
| Bill Payments | 30%, capped at Rs 3 |
| All other categories | 5% |
Phones carry an asterisk for good reason. A separate list on the same page sets named models at 0%, 0.5%, 1.5% or 2%, and every iPhone sits in the 0% group along with many Samsung, OnePlus, Redmi, Vivo and Oppo handsets. Apple MacBooks, iPads and Apple Watch, audio gear under Rs 3,000 MRP, several headset brands, all microwaves and semi-automatic washing machines also pay 0%.
A few purchases are excluded outright: flight bookings and gift cards, video gaming consoles and hardware, Prime membership, Kindle eBooks, and gold and silver coins. Amazon also says it may change rates, add exclusions or run special offers, and it can announce changes by updating the page.
Cookie window and qualifying purchases
The Operating Agreement does not use the word cookie. It defines a session instead. A purchase counts if the visitor buys within 24 hours of clicking your link, or adds the item to their cart in that window and orders it within 89 days of the first click (roughly the 90-day window people talk about). So the cookie duration, 24 hours for a direct sale, is short. Buyers who think it over for a week usually drop out unless the item is already in their cart.
Your own orders, orders for resale and anything later cancelled or returned do not qualify. That matters in categories like fashion, where returns are frequent.
A practical example helps. Suppose a reader clicks your link to a pressure cooker on Monday evening and buys it on Tuesday morning. That sale counts. If they leave without adding it to the cart and come back on Thursday through a Google search, it does not, even though your article did the persuading. Comparison posts that push readers to act on the same visit tend to earn more than long research pieces for this reason.
Amazon associates 180 days rule
Approval is provisional at first. According to Amazon's help page on this, you get 180 days from applying to refer sales, and once you have referred three qualifying sales Amazon evaluates the application within a day or two. If there are not enough qualifying sales in that window, the application can be withdrawn.
The painful part is permanence. Amazon says it cannot reinstate an account or Associates ID after rejection, though you are welcome to reapply once your site is established. In practice that means a fresh application, a fresh ID and replacing every old link.
Amazon associates approval tips for new sites
These suggestions follow from the published rules rather than any secret formula:
- Apply after you have content. A site with real reviews and guides is easier to approve, and the 180-day clock starts on application, not on your first post.
- Bring traffic you control. Three sales from genuine readers is the bar. Buying from your own link does not count.
- List every site and app you will use. Reviewers check the properties you declare.
- Add the disclosure from day one. It is mandatory, and missing it is an easy reason for rejection.
- Link to products people buy repeatedly. With a 24-hour session, everyday items convert faster than expensive purchases.
Linking tools, reports and the API
SiteStripe is the toolbar most Indian publishers use. It appears on Amazon.in when you are signed in with the Amazon account tied to your Associates profile, and it creates text links (short and long), image links and text-plus-image links for the page you are viewing. It can also post the link to Facebook or Twitter from your own account. You can switch SiteStripe on or off from its settings icon or your account settings, and change the tracking ID per link.
Reporting lives in Associates Central. Amazon names six reports (Earnings, Orders, Link-Type, Daily Trends, Tracking ID Summary and Payment History) and describes them as online daily reports. Separate tracking IDs for each site or campaign are the easiest way to see which pages actually earn, and this earnings dashboard view is where you will spend most of your time.
Developers who want live prices and product data have a moving target. Amazon's own notice says the Product Advertising API 5.0 has been deprecated, that calls now return a 403 access-denied error, and that developers should move to the newer Creators API. The notice gives no exact shutdown date. The Creators API is a REST service with SearchItems, GetItems, GetVariations and GetBrowseNodes, its locale reference lists www.amazon.in, and the documentation asks for at least 10 qualifying sales in the past 30 days plus registration in Associates Central. The India agreement also limits caching of product content to 24 hours and asks for a timestamp on prices refreshed less often than hourly.
Payments and TDS in India
Amazon pays approximately 60 days after the end of each calendar month. Under the agreement, fees can be held until your balance reaches at least ₹1,000 for NEFT transfers to an Indian bank account. NEFT bank transfer is the method the agreement names; we could not confirm a gift card payout option on the India site, so do not count on one.
Tax is deducted at source. The agreement says Amazon withholds tax under the Income Tax Act, at the rate the law sets for Indian residents. If you have not supplied a PAN, or you are a non-resident, the rate varies, and Amazon may hold fees in abeyance until your tax details are complete. A nil or lower withholding certificate is honoured if you provide one. Add your PAN during signup to avoid delays, and keep the TDS figures for your return.
Disclosure and compliance
Section 10 of the agreement requires a clear statement on your site: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." Place it near your links, not buried in a footer. A good affiliate disclosure also helps reader trust and keeps you on the right side of Indian advertising guidelines for paid promotion. Amazon can end the agreement at any time with or without cause, so treat compliance as part of the job.
Amazon associates vs flipkart affiliate
Flipkart runs its own affiliate program at affiliate.flipkart.com. Its homepage currently shows a login form without an obvious signup link, so check whether new registrations are open before planning around it. The same page lists category commissions such as 6–12% on books, up to 5% on mobiles, up to 6% on computers, 6–20% on toys and up to 4% on cameras.
| Item | Amazon Associates (India) | Flipkart Affiliate | EarnKaro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost to join | No fee listed | Not stated on homepage | Free |
| Mobile phones | 1%, many models 0% to 2% | Up to 5% | Varies by brand |
| Stores covered | Amazon.in | Flipkart | 200+ brands incl. Flipkart, Myntra, Ajio |
| Minimum payout | ₹1,000 (NEFT) | Not stated on homepage | ₹10 to bank |
| Approval | Three qualifying sales in 180 days | Not stated on homepage | Open to anyone |
For a site that reviews gadgets, Flipkart's listed mobile rate looks better than Amazon's, where popular phones often pay 0% to 1%. For general shopping content, Amazon's catalogue breadth and trusted checkout usually decide it. Many Indian publishers run both and link to whichever store has the better price.
Amazon associates alternatives
EarnKaro is a deal-sharing platform that pays you for purchases made through its links across more than 200 brands, including Flipkart, Myntra, Ajio, Nykaa and MakeMyTrip. Anyone can join for free, and withdrawals start at ₹10. Its homepage does not list Amazon. Cuelinks is an affiliate network for publishers and influencers that says more than 1,000 advertisers use it, with Amazon shown among its brand logos. Both suit people who want many stores under one account, at the cost of an extra middle layer.
Limitations to weigh
- A 24-hour session is short for considered purchases.
- Phones, one of India's biggest online categories, earn 1% at best for most models, and every iPhone pays nothing.
- Rejected IDs cannot be revived, so a slow start can cost you your links.
- Payouts arrive about two months after the sale month.
- API access now depends on recent sales volume.
How to get started
Publish 15 to 20 useful posts first. Then sign up at affiliate-program.amazon.in with the Amazon.in account you shop with, list your websites and apps, and enter your PAN and bank details. Turn on SiteStripe, create a tracking ID per site, and add the required disclosure. Aim for three qualifying sales early rather than late, and recheck the fee schedule before choosing which categories to cover, since Amazon labels its rates by period.

Amazon Associates FAQ
What is the Amazon Associates program?
It is Amazon's official affiliate program. In India it runs from affiliate-program.amazon.in, and you earn an advertising fee when a visitor clicks your special link and makes a qualifying purchase on Amazon.in. No joining fee is listed.
What are Amazon Associates commission rates in India?
Amazon's fee schedule for October to November 2026 lists 8% on beauty, 7.5% on apparel, luggage and watches, 7% on jewellery, shoes and handbags, 4% to 4.72% on home, kitchen, books, baby and sports, and 2.45% to 2.8% on electronics, computers and large appliances. Phones are 1%, with many models at 0% to 2%, and unlisted categories get 5%. Gift cards, flights, Prime, consoles, Kindle eBooks and gold coins earn nothing. Rates change by period, so check the live schedule.
How do I get approved for Amazon Associates?
Apply with a qualifying website or app, then refer three qualifying sales within 180 days of applying. Amazon says it reviews the application within a day or two of the third sale. Having real content, genuine traffic and a visible disclosure before you apply improves your chances.
How do I create affiliate links with SiteStripe?
Sign in to Amazon.in with the account linked to your Associates profile and make sure SiteStripe is turned on. Open any product page and use the toolbar to generate a text link, image link or text-plus-image link. You can change the tracking ID for each link.
Is Amazon Associates legit and does it pay?
Yes, it is run by Amazon itself under a published Operating Agreement. Payment is made roughly 60 days after the end of each month once your balance reaches at least ₹1,000 for NEFT. Tax is deducted at source under the Income Tax Act.
Amazon Associates vs Flipkart Affiliate: which is better?
It depends on your niche. Flipkart's affiliate homepage lists up to 5% on mobiles, while Amazon pays 1% on phones and 0% on many popular models, but Amazon covers a wider catalogue and pays more on beauty and fashion. Flipkart's homepage currently shows only a login form, so confirm signups are open before choosing it.
How does Amazon Associates pay in India?
The India agreement names NEFT bank transfer, with a minimum balance of ₹1,000 before payout. Payments are made about 60 days after the end of each calendar month. TDS is withheld, and the rate varies if you have not provided a PAN.
What are the best Amazon Associates alternatives?
In India, EarnKaro covers more than 200 brands including Flipkart, Myntra and Ajio, with withdrawals from ₹10. Cuelinks is a publisher network that says it works with more than 1,000 advertisers. Flipkart's own affiliate program is another option if registrations are open.
How do I fix an Amazon Associates account closed after 180 days?
If you did not refer enough qualifying sales within 180 days, the application can be withdrawn. Amazon says it cannot reinstate a rejected account or Associates ID. The fix is to build your site and traffic, then reapply and replace old links with the new ID.
Who can join Amazon Associates?
Amazon says bloggers, publishers and content creators with a qualifying website or mobile app can apply. Creators with an established social media following are pointed to the Amazon Influencer Program. Every application is reviewed before approval.
